About the Artist
COMPOSING MUSIC

The composition process, the art of the modern composer, remains virtually unchanged from that of his 17th century counterpart; but the tools of the composer have changed dramatically. From pen-and-ink on parchment, the composer's notation tools have evolved into computers. From an orchestra of live musicians, the performance medium has grown to include powerful and sophisticated electronic synthesizers. But the art itself is unaltered, independent of any particular musical style or tool. From the initial conception of a melodic phrase, motif, or theme, the composer weaves threads of sound into an overall tapestry of form and structure, develops musical themes, harmony, and rhythm, uses various sounds to create musical colors and moods, uses counterpoint techniques to blend several different melodies together at once, uses various elements of musical variation to add interest, and uses a wealth of different mechanisms to create feelings of tension, rest, excitement or relaxation in the music. It is a skill that takes a lifetime to master.

About the music

Generally the music is polyphonic and contrapuntal in nature, with well-developed melodic lines, often in ternary form with thematic development - not simple iterations - and syncopated jazz rhythms. Texturally the material focuses around acoustic strings - harp, piano, guitar, viola - as highlight instruments. Some songs are relaxing, others are exciting. The entire CD was created in the digital realm: from composition and arrangement to performance, recording, and digital mastering. All elements of the process were completed by the artist. This album has been mastered in such a way that the listener hears the musicians from the perspective of a performer, within the ensemble - not merely as one might hear it from the audiance. You will surely be pleased with the results.

Not as good as his old stuff.......2007-03-28

Larnelle remains one of my favorite Gospel singers of all times. His talent and vocal range are evident in these songs, however the songs just aren't that great. His earlier stuff had such great build up as it worked it's way to a grand and climactic ending. Not unenjoyable at all if you are a Larnelle fan, but not likely to spawn any new fans.

A Jazzy Discovery.......2005-10-09

This album is a ten song compilation or sampler from five jazz artists with two songs each. Marion Meadows starts this album off with "Marion's Theme" a contemporary instrumental with a raving horn section. "Kool" is another one by Marion that's more lain back instrumental as the title states. Roy Ayers hit big in the jazzy, R&B track "Baby Set Me Free" with seductive vocals that blends well with the track. Cleo Laine takes it back to a Cotton Club Uptown feel jazz with "Don't Get around Much Anymore". Her "Solitude" is a lot more quiet and setting an atmosphere of a good evening. Ray Obiedo has a more exotic, island groove more than a jazzy feel with "Santa Lucia" and "Flamingo". Last but not least, Joe Taylor drops a more elevator, lobby type feel with a slight twist of emotions found on "Queen Of Pain". This is a good compilation comprised with 48 minutes of different styles of jazz to fit anyone's taste buds.
