From Amazon.co.uk

Listening to Colour the Small One seems almost rude, as though you've just crept into someone's bedroom unannounced and read their diary, or even eavesdropped into a private conversation. A lot of this is down to Sia's voice; a soft, intimate, languorous affair that has the unsettling effect of being simultaneously sad and seductive. A couple of years on from her R&B-tinged debut and those classic pairings with Zero 7, the Australian vocalist has come a long way. The music here consists of basic frameworks of rhythm, enhanced by subtle percussion, folky harmonica and nothing more obtrusive than that secretive, melancholic voice. There's certainly room to breathe and Sia unfolds at her own leisurely pace. Opener "Rewrite" works the sad verse/sunny chorus formula to perfection, while "Sunday" turns "Strawberry Fields" harmonium into big orchestral trip-hop. "Sweet Potato" sours the flow, sounding contrived and too like Nelly Furtado for its own good, but "Bully", a collaboration with Beck Hansen, has a sweet melody that belies its subject matter. As cries for help go, this is up there with the best. --Paul Tierney

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing vocals over dreamy backdrops. A must for trip-hop/down tempo fans........2007-02-23

First, I just have to give SIA credit for being so unique. In a genre where vocals are wispy and drawn out and dramatic, she manages all these feats while still doing it her way. At times soulfoul and at times etheral, you definitely wont feel like you're listening to a female vocalist you've heard before. I hate to say it, but I enjoy SIA's solo album more than her work with ZERO 7. Its a great album to listen to while driving, studying, cooking, for a get-together, or just to "chill" out. But not as ambient as the others in her genre, so it wont put you to sleep. I dont skip though any of the songs which is always, to me, the sign of a well produced album. We all know and love the song "breathe me". Moving, powerful lyrics. Featured on "six feet under" and as the preview song for "freedom writers". But the best song on the album, hands down, is MOON. I love love love this song. I feel like I'm floating when I listen and it literally transcends. The only pity is that I didn't find out about this album sooner. Get it. Truely worth the two lattes, half tank of gas, or 3 packs of American Spirits. Either way you analyze the cost its so WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny!.......2007-01-11

I highly recommend this CD. All the songs are very good and she has an amazing voice.

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2006-05-26

I must have heard this album in that very book store where the other reviewer (the one who hated the album) works. :-) I was not really there to listen to music, but in half an hour that I was there, I caught myself liking what I was hearing at least 2 or 3 times. This doesn't happen very often, so I asked what the album was and listened to it on Napster when I got home. I must admit I didn't purchase the whole album. In fact, the only tracks I did end up purchasing are the ones that noone seems to mention - Don't bring me down, The Church of What's happening now, Natale's song, Where I belong.
I must agree that she doesn't articulate at all and lyrics ARE very hard to understand most of the time. But hey - how can you get annoyed by lyrics if you can't understand them, right? :-) I'm still planning on listening to the songs while looking at lyrics in the nearest future, in the meantime, I can't really criticize or embrace them. However, I find her melodies to be absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing, the best I've heard in a long while, and to me that often matters more than highly philosophical lyrics (and how often do we see those, anyway - from what I can understand of her lyrics, they aren't any less or more pretentious than 90% of what we hear on the radio these days?).
I also don't find anything annoying about her voice (her lack of articulation aside - but that seems to be the trend for a long of singers these days). I think it works very well to create a mood.
Wouldn't buy the album for $20 or so at the store simply because I don't find all tracks equally appealing (thus, the 4 stars), but those that I like, I definitely like a lot and enjoy listening to often.

4 out of 5 stars much more than "Breathe Me".......2006-05-07

I've been listening to this album since its initial UK release, and it has yet to wear out on me. Sia's music is not for everyone; you must listen to the songs carefully to appreciate the melodies. But once grasped, these melodies are so exquisite and subtly layered that it is difficult to tire of them. The songs are understated, the vocals vulnerable with emotion, and compositions, sumptuous. What baffles me is all the attention being given to "Breathe Me", as if the rest of the album is secondary. I do not believe this to be the case at all. While "Breathe Me" is a good song, there are many others on the album that surpass it, such as "Sweet Potatoe", "Sunday", "Moon", and "Numb". This is a beautiful collection of original songs worthy of attention.

5 out of 5 stars Great Albulm.......2006-04-19

So my friend calls me up and asks me if I want to see Sia in concert. I had never heard of her before, but why not? The concert was great, and afterward i went out and bought the albulm. Some people complain about Sia's voice...but honestly what makes her voice so good is that its different from every other person out there. Very soft, melodic, and light. The entire albulm is very, chill and great to listen to anytime. Get this albulm, you won't be dissapointed.

      5 out of 5 stars What a surprise!.......2006-03-20

This album was a massive success in Italy in 2005 (5 straight weeks at #1 during Christams time). The explaination is simple: most of the songs are this kind of catchy romantic style that you can't get enough!
First track, "Mentre aspetto che ritorni" (Waiting for your return) is a classy Renato Zero's song: beautiful lyrics, huge voice, arranged with plenty of violins and strings.
"Immi Ruah" is an anthem for peace of religions. "Mi chiamo aria" (My name is air) is a great bossa nova track, while "Radio or not-radio" is a powerful rock ballad aimed to ridiculize the airplaying of mainstream radio networks.
"Una vita fa" (A life ago) is a stunning sad song very similar to the music of most of Fellini's movies. Also "Fai da te" (Do it by yourself, a funny song about virility problems) and "D'aria e di musica" (By air and by music) are great. Really, i dig this cd very much!

          4 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!!.......2000-08-04

This summer I discovered this fantastic singer/song writter through my boss who had received this double CD as a gift from siblings in Italy... This is our non-stop music in the office... Even though I don't understand italian (planning on learning this fall) it is an enjoyable CD, my first one of Renato Zero, but surely not the last! Enjoy the moment!

          5 out of 5 stars Bravissimo!.......2000-06-05

This is the kind of performance that confirms the great ability of Renato Zero as a singer. This performance was recorded live near Milan, Italy and gives "on stage" a global view of what this singer made throughout the years. Clearly, if you understand Italian it conveys a high degree of emotionality, which is one of the reasons why in Italy people love him. Part of the revenue that Renato Zero will receive from this sale will be endorsed to "Fonopoli" a musical village for people with musical talent, which has been created in the outskirts of Rome. Again, bravissimo Renato!

          5 out of 5 stars BRAVISSIMO.......2000-05-03

I bought the double CD beforeI left Rome and I just loveit! I play it in my car andmy friends and family justcan't help but admire thesinger. You don't have toknow the language to like the songs in the album, youjust have to go with the flowof the sound and the voice of the artist. I bet you AndreaBoccelli is a fan of thissinger too.

          5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2000-03-01

This CD is Wonderful! I heard his music the whole summer that I was in Italy and absolutely love all of it. Even though I do nto understand the words, it is still beautiful and always brings a smile to my face. A MUST BUY!

          5 out of 5 stars Powerful Pop-Rock.......2003-01-27

Since the 1970's the Italian musician Renato Zero has been making highly original pop and rock music with meaningful and intelligent lyrics. Zerolandia (1978) is one of his most satisfying albums. The melodic, hook-laden "La favola mia" (My Story) open the album on a high note, being one of those poprock powerballads that becomes addictive after the second listen. "Io uguale io" (I equals I) is equally catchy, while "Triangolo" is a fast number with lovely strings and soaring vocals. "Sesso o esse" impresses with its unusual synth effects, while "Fermati" is a gentle ballad. "Amaro Madely" starts like a radio playing an old song from the 1930's before developing into a dramatic ballad. "Una guerra senza eroi" (War without heroes) with its marching beat is another catchy song, and the sax-heavy "Uomo, no" concludes his varied and enjoyable album. Zero's great talent lies in his integration of the tension and urgency of rock with the melodicism of the Italian popular song.

            Album Description

From the Artist This record began as an experiment with noise on a laptop in a bus on tour somewhere. That sound led to a daydream about the end of the world. That daydream stuck with me and over time revealed itself to be much more. I believe sometimes you have a choice in what inspiration you choose to follow and other times you really don't. This record is the latter. Once I tuned into it, everything fell into place... as if it were meant to be. With a framework established, the songs were very easy to write. Things started happening in my "real" life that blurred the lines of what was fiction and what wasn't. The record turned out to be more than a just a record in scale, as you will see over time. Part one is year zero. Concept record. Sixteen tracks. All written and performed by me, produced / programmed by me and Atticus Ross, mixed by Alan Moulder, mastered by Brian "Big Bass" Gardner. Release date: April 17, 2007. What's it about? Well, it takes place about fifteen years in the future. Things are not good. If you imagine a world where greed and power continue to run their likely course, you'll have an idea of the backdrop. The world has reached the breaking point - politically, spiritually and ecologically. Written from various perspectives of people in this world, "year zero" examines various viewpoints set against an impending moment of truth. How does it sound? You will hear for yourself soon enough, but given the point of this document is to provide information... This record is much more of a "sound collage" than recent efforts from me. A lot of it was improvised. It is very tedious describing your own music. It's not just music. It's probably too long, but it felt like the right thing to do to paint the complete picture. It will sound different after a few listens. You can think about it and it will reveal more than you were expecting. You can dance to a lot of it. You can f*** to a lot of it (maybe all of it depending on what you're into).
