Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."

Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley

When I purchased Mario's DVD I had never heard of him. I was actually browsing Josh Groban items when I noticed the [...] suggested items below and had a look.
What a find. Mario Frangoulis is an outstanding performer with an incredible voice. The quality of his concert is excellent with a full orchestra and top notch audio quality. I have watched this performance 7 times and can't wait to see it again.

I had borrowed this CD from a co-worker a couple of years ago and was so thrilled to find it available here. Mario is wonderful and so easy to listen to. If you like Josh Groban, Russell Watson, Andrea Boccelli than you'll love Mario Frangoulis.

Boda de Sangre (Blood Wedding) This passionate song was inspired by the great Spanish poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca's play "Blood Wedding". The play "Blood Wedding" was written in 1938, and depicts the hidden passion and intensity of forbidden love that is embedded within the play's story line.

A La Naturaleza (To Nature) Spawned by the influence of love, this beautiful song depicts nature and its inconsistencies. The changes in meter reflect fluid, cyclical changes of nature, and human life's integral part in its totality. "A La Naturaleza" reflects the artist's own attempts to find harmony with nature.

Tempestad (The Storm) Influences from Cuba offer inspiration for this dark tune. This sensual piece makes love to the ear as it ingrains itself deep in the soul with the strumming of fingers on the guitar and rhythmic strokes of the dark bass.

Con la Lengua en la Mano (With Language in his Hand) This song is an emblem of mestizaje, a convoluted and diluted mixture of rhythms and sound tracing its roots from India, Spain and Cuba.

Monsoon Nostalgia hits and the artist probes in the confines of his mind. There lie days of old where the natural occurrences during June and July plague the sky of Tucson, Arizona. Imagine the introduction of winds followed by a vibrant red sky where swarms of gray clouds follow and threaten to swallow one. The voice within the song "Monsoon" adds peace of mind to pacify human fears amongst the existence of this unknown entity we call nature.

Para la Gente de Chiapas (For the People of Chiapas) January 1, 1994 - Hundreds of years of political repression are the catalyst for a political uprising by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) . The EZLN surprised the government of Mexico by taking over San Cristobal de las Casas, the capital of Chiapas, as well as other neighboring towns in a stand against the persisting violation of human rights and to bring forth the recognition of the social and economic injustices that have for centuries plagued the indigenous people of Mexico. The uprising was also in protest of the NAFTA trade agreement, which took effect on the first of that year, and used to send a clear message to the Mexican government - "Basta" (enough). The struggle within the state of Chiapas was the inspiration for "Para la Gente de Chiapas". This beautiful song is the product of consciousness and written with hope for the people of Chiapas.

Moon Song Influenced by Brazilian rhythm and melody this song provides moonlight in the form of melody that dominates the piece. At times the moonlight shines fully, while at others we feel it in spurts. Its inconstant, cyclical changes mesmerize yet provide us with lucid serenity all at once.

Earth "Earth" creates a visual picture of nature. The opening phrase of the piece serves as a reference point which is constantly reintroduced like the cycles that exist on earth. Tension is created by dissonant chords being syncopated over pedal tones creating a disturbed landscape but the tension is released by a harmonious melody that provides continuity to the form and gives a hopeful outlook of the earth in which we live.

I just got the CD and I listened to it 3 times alreay. I really like the Latin/Spanish influence combined with an excellent classical mix and Jazz feel. I can't wait for the next CD. To bad "AJ Blacklist" doesn't understand.

Sandoval has definitely shown his ability with the Art of Composition and Ethnomusicology. I've also seen this AJ Blackman (aka Aaron Gonzales)this wanna-be musician is not only uneducated but couldn't find a coherent bassline with two hands and a flashlight! Your music shines Ray...

Ray's original music avoids the cliches of, "world music", challenges but always entertains the listener. Whoever said this was bubble gum music had bubble gum between their ears. Jazz and classical combine in this album to provide treatment of themes which are interesting and enlightening.

While listening to this CD you'll enter into a world of sensual rhythms with an international flare. It is masterfully played, composed and arranged. The music depicts visual images of nature's every changing personality. I can't get enough. I love all of the titles and want to hear more.

Nothing like Bubble Gum..........1999-10-11

Mr. Blackman was close but no cigar. This album was more like chewing tobacco which gave me the erge to spew it out. I give Mr. Sandavol an A for effort but a D in originalty. This music is played nightly at the local cantina in my native town in Brazil by twelve year old boys.
