About the Artist
Musicality is the central passion of the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble and it is this passion which they have pursued over many years in performing their klezmer repertoire and developing their own style. Many Jewish American klezmer groups have subordinated musical innovation to ethnic nostalgia but this ensemble is different. For that reason they can claim to be "traditional" on one hand (reflecting pre-immigration east European Jewish musical style) and "avant garde" on the other.

Product Description
The Chicago Klezmer Ensemble began forming in 1983 and gave its first performance under that name in 1984. In 1987, the Chicago Klezmer Ensemble made its first recordings. The band had five members then, but the most effective pieces were recorded by smaller units: two trios and a duet. Those pieces are included in this CD.

At the beginning of 1989 the band solidified into a core group of four musicians, all of whom are still in the band today. In August 1989 this quartet recorded the nine pieces which complete this CD. Includes a 12 paged booklet with text in English, French and German.
