This album is wonderful. The blending of classical baroque pieces with original Christmas carols is a wonderful idea. My favorite is track number 3, "White Christmas." Take a listen!

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

An underappreciated American classic!.......1999-12-19

Opera lovers in St Louis know the work of William Mayer. His beautifully wrought opera, "A Death in the Family" (based on the posthumous novel of James Agee), was premiered by Opera Theare of St Louis. This production also marked the debut of Dawn Upshaw. Unfortunately, no major recording company has made a complete recording of this beautiful opera. This disc from Albany Records, sporting perhaps the ugliest cover in the history of recordings, offers two hauntingly beautiful arias from the opera, plus several other vocal and orchestral pieces conducted by Gerard Schwarz. This disc is a wonderful introduction to a true American original.

The voices of holiday beauty.......2001-10-20

The Dale Warland Singers are the perfect vehicle for Stephan Paulus' compositions and arrangements. The music in this album delivers beautiful renditions of the holiday favorites such as "Angels we Have Heard on High" and the "First Nowell." The songs that really stand out are the tuneful Paulus compositions and arrangements: Hallelu, A Saviour from on High (my favorite), and Snow has fallen; Christ was Born. The Choir sounds like one big heavenly voice in all the songs. The Harp accompaniments add another voice that gives this album its trademark. The harmonies are exquisite as well.
