The REAL GodFather of Soul.......2007-01-10
This CD captures the essence of who Sam Cooke was and the intensity of his love for music. Had Sam Cooke not died young, he would have been the GodFather of Soul. Like many before him, he started with Gospel music and went on to mainstream on his own. My favorite Sam Cooke song is "LITTLE RED ROOSTER!"
I highly recommend this CD as well as looking into the man who was Sam Cooke.
Most Requested Songs by Sam Cooke.......2006-11-03
I loved all of the songs on this CD. Every song is worth hearing again and again.
Smooth Satin Soul.......2005-09-19
Sam Cooke was one of the greatest. If you ever had any doubt, purchase this album and you will be convinced. I have been listening to it daily for years
SOUL.......2001-09-27
is the first word that comes to mind upon hearing this set.Sam Cooke lays it on&never let's up.as a Composer,Vocalist He was something else. One of a Kind&this set Highlights His Genius which is a timeless set.
The best available Sam Cooke compilation.......2001-03-19
Now that The Man and His Music has gone out of print, this is, to the best of my knowledge, the ONLY compilation that has Chain Gang, Wonderful World, Cupid and Another Saturday Night, which are in my opinion the four best songs of the masterful Sam Cooke, one of the great musical talents of the sixties who combined r and b, soul, gospel and rock into a unique style all his own. For some reason most Cooke compilations exclude one or more of these great great tunes, and in fact I don't think Another Saturday Night is available anywhere else. Excellent sound too.

5 stars.......2007-02-25
I cant believe I found this cd, its awesome.
It has all the best 5* songs and it brings back the great dance beat.
They have a likeness to The Jacksons and DeBarge and yet still they hold their own.
All the songs a great and they still sound great today.
100% Satisfied.......2006-08-11
This album is great, Five Star is a group I grew up listening to in the 80's a must have. It came in my post right on time when I need some musical upliftment. Good packaging, great music what more can I ask for. Thank you, I recommend this seller and product to all the old school 80's fanatics like me. Cheers.
5 Star..........2005-10-28
I recently bought "5 Star - the greatest hits" just to "catch up" with the group. "Let me be the one" is definitely the best song on the collection! I must rate the rest of the material as "Okay." Three stars...I'm going to give this collection another listen...if their material grows on me...maybe I'll raise my rating (and change my review!)
A real greatest hits album.......2004-11-03
Five star is a familygroup from England. Two brothers and three sisters who became popstars and had some great successes in the eighties, especially in England. All these songs were hits in England and a lot of them also in the Netherlands, where I come from; they were quite popular. Hits like All fall down, Let me be the one, Find the time, Rain or shine and The slightest touch are catchy tunes, which were played a lot in the clubs in '85/ '86 and '87. Five star still makes records (Eclipse 2001) and the family lives in the States since 1990. I am a fan since day one and will always stay a fan. Especially the leadsinger Denise has a superb voice. This album represents the best of their work, but do not forget to check their latest album, which is still of the same high quality.

Pretty nice collaboration........2007-07-05
This is one of the funkiest bands of all time in my opinion. I really do love the SOS Band. They made some very nice tunes back in the day, especially when they hooked up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. That's the best thing they could've ever did. Songs like "Do you still care, Weekend Girl and Just be good to me" still stands out to me to this day. Those are timeless classics and i still jam them ocassionally. I wish the record labels would go on and release all of this group's individual albums on cd. I would still like to have the title cd "Just the way you like it". I just recently got a hold of their cd title "On the Rise". It cost me a nice penny, but it was worth it.
The Best of the S.O.S. Band..........2007-05-06
Although this collection is NOT as varied as their "Greatest Hits" CD, this CD does boast the full-length versions of the following:
1. take your time (do it right) 7:39
2. Just be good to me 9:03
3. Weekend girl 5:39
I paid $14/US for the disc. Great songs! Great value, as I paid $14/US for a new disc. Five stars!!
SOS Band is one of the greatest R &B groups of the 80's.......2003-11-15
Every time I hear this album or any other SOS album it blows my mind all over again! The first song I ever heard of theirs was "Tell me if you still care" and I was hooked. I can't believe that more of their albums have not been re-released on CD. I mean can we talk about jams like, "Sands of Time", "No Lies", "Weekend Girl", "Just Be Good To Me", the list can go on and on. I grew up around the corner from Flyte Tyme Studios and was lucky enough to get Sands of Time on CD, don't pass this up!
The CD is Available!!.......2002-12-29
Just a note to all those out there looking for this on CD. I live in Texas and have owned this CD for the past few years!!! Attempt to special order this from a local record store. The S.O.S. Band is the greatest!
The Best of the S.O.S Band.......2002-10-15
This is an excellent album. From what I can see, this is only offered in the cassette form. This is a travisty! This needs to be offered on CD.
Please consider this request. I would like to purchase this as soon as it's made available.

Customer Reviews:
Some of the best Motown ever...........2007-07-12
Bobby Taylor (and The Vancouvers) performed some of the best music to ever come out of Motown, yet they are widely unknown. I highly recommend this CD set to all who like the Motown sound and groups such as The Temptations. Taylor and crew come across as perhaps a tad less professional and less polished than some other Motown groups, yet their loose sound is what makes their music so special. For example, their take on The Tempts' "It's Growing" is, in my opinion, far superior to the original. Taylor's version has a nice garage-type sound that just flows. Wonderful. The song "Fading Away" is also a splendid of example of a Motown classic that was never discovered. This set is 46 songs worth of excellence and entertainment.
The best out of all of the Motown Anthologies and Collections out of Great Britain.
Was very please.......2007-03-13
Got this for a gift, and they just love it...Very Best Condition..
Memories.......2006-11-19
They say, "good things come to those who wait" (especially if you are looking hard while you are waiting!). At first all I knew about Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers was from my three 45's, a AND b-sides. That was enough for the group to make my BOLO (be on the look out), and Most Wanted list. But I was never able to get the album or cd. Over time with the help of the internet, I became more and more informed and fan-cinated with the group. Thanks to Universal Music Operations, the first 12 songs on CD1 mirror the groups one and only Motown album. Be advised, the Amazon listing is not in order. Next we get all of the songs from Bobby's -Taylor Made Soul- Album. Hey, who was doing the backup singing on all of those songs? CD2 consists mostly of a lot of good unreleased covers by Bobby Taylor. I would have been thrilled with just the 24 selections from disc 1, so all the rest is just icing on the cake. One of my favorites is Malinda, and not just because the fingerprints of that poetic genius, Smokey Robinson, are all over the lyrics.
Now a rant: Do the people running the remnants and affiliates of Motown know anything about marketing? Clearly, Motown at its peak was overloaded with more talent than they knew what to do with. They keep repackaging the big 10 groups literally a thousand times over while dozens of other talented groups and hundreds of great songs have virtually disappeared from public consciousness. (I am not ignoring the recent efforts of the Universal Music companies). So here is a free recommendation from someone who has done his own market research with the target market. Do a series of cd's with a name like "The Lost Hits of Motown". At 20 hits a cd, you could easily fill 3 cd's with memorable top 20 songs by Shorty Long, Kim Weston, Blinky, Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, The Contours, The Elgins, et al. Then there are all of the acts that, if you are not over 50 or 60 you would never realize that they once worked for Motown, like The Isley Brothers, Barbara McNair, Billy Eckstine, Meatloaf, The Spinners, not to mention that old hippy dude from That 70's Show. I think that by reintroducing some of the BEST forgotten songs of these forgotten Motown groups to people under 50, they could awaken a whole new set of buyers who would be interested in other songs by these acts. And of course people over 50 would surely snap up the cd's for themselves and for gifts.
If we depended on U.S. power callers.............2006-05-06
to get the music (especially the rarer) onto cd and access availible worldwide, we'd be "hung out to dry"! The examples of such add up like years. This stupendous release exemplifies such in crystal clear clarity. He's a story, about 10 years ago, while speaking with a high level reissue exec responsible for a number of the Motown label reissues, that made it to store shelves over the years, I asked him if the label would be reissuing onto cd Bobby Taylor's (of Bobby Taylor And The Vancouvers fame) ultra rare and expensive, one an only solo album "Taylor Made Soul", released in 1970, after he abrubtly left the group seeking solo fame, only one year after the group finally had reached a point of an album release after signing with Motown, from their far West roots? My album, which was hard enough to procure, wasn't in unplayed condition when I obtained it, so a digitally remastered cd reissue, based on the obscurity of the album, since the label had never pushed it upon release, would be great! The album cover shows him styling glasses similar to the type David Ruffin fronted at the time. David's first solo album effort after his departure from the Tempations, 1969's "My Whole World Ended", had done well enough and perhaps it was believed by the then Motown power callers that Bobby might have similar success with his solo effort? Over the years, the cd reissue of Bobby Taylor's album did not forthcome. I previously wrote a review on the out of print, sought after reissue cd of the 1969 album Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers "Does Your Mama Know About Me", which has commanded supply demand numbers for quite some time. The exec, who had an office in NYC and in the warehouse where the original Motown tapes were and are currently being stored, and to your surprise, in New Jersey (shipped to NJ from California after the label was sold the 2nd time)! He told me the company had already reissued the album on cd in 1994, "yeah, we reissued the Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers album on cd in '94". I said to him "no, I'm talking about Bobby Taylor's solo Motown album". He said, "Bobby Taylor had a solo album on Motown"? He didn't even know that Motown had released a solo lp by Bobby Taylor. Now, the English and Japanese, they know about his album and 45s, and have em'! For Motown music collectors, this cd is a "Bomb"! And once again it took the foreigners to get it to market! Bobby Taylor's solo recordings have never, prior to now, been released in a set on cd. England's Motown/Spectrum label, which reissues cds of some of the less famous Motown artists, and rarer songs on the known artists, receives the highest praises in putting this together. They went into the Motown tapes and dug out Bobby Taylor's work. What a job has been done here! The double cd contains what was the out of print Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers album, his ultra rare "Taylor Made Soul" album, and the tracks from he with the group and his solo tracks, all that did not make the two albums! WOW!!!!! From that standpoint how can we do any better? His solo uptempo 45 "Oh, I've Been Blessed" commands very strong numbers on England's Northern Soul scene, and is one of my favorites on his lp. When it comes to rarer soul, the English and Japanese are amazing! U.S. power callers have had their chance for years, didn't happen. The English knew, and got it done! 5 Stars. There are titles here that weren't released by Motown on album or 45, who needs to discuss them? Motown collectors specifically, old school music collectors in general, do I need to say... It's Buy Time?

Valerie Simpson Collection.......2007-01-23
I have been searching for a collection of songs by this artist for some time and I was so excited when I saw this CD available for purchase. This is my favorite and I make all of my friends and family listen to it. I have all of Valerie Simpson's albums but after so many years the sound quality is so poor. Now, the original songs on CD! I am so happy because there is no other musician that can compare to Valerie. Nick is a special talent as well.
SHE CAN THROW IT DOWN!.......2005-01-26
Better than Alicia Keys (take note please) this is one heck of a record. I really liked the Diana Ross song, "Now That There's You." "Sinner Man" and "I Just Wanna Be There" are very good. The best one of them all, "Back to Nowhere" is a rather mind blowing song. A&S did one incredible job on this album. I would highly suggest checking this record out. It has two albums combined to make one CD, "Exposed" and "Valerie Simpson." This record has a very natural feel to it and none of that horrible electronic keyboard stuff that would dominate a later Ashford and Simpson album called, "Love or Physical." With "Exposed" being the best, this CD is really good and I simply enjoy it. I don't understand by Motown didn't get behind the "Exposed" record. That album should have done much better on the charts. It is really a shame that good music is never rewarded with better promotion.
One of the Most Underrated Musical greats.......2004-12-26
you name it&Valerie Simpson has done it. as One half of the Great writing Duo of Asford&Simpson Valerie Simpson has helped Create some of the Most Timeless Classic Material.as a vocalist though uncredited she did a Great job filling in for Tammi Terrell on duets with Marvin Gaye.Valerie has also done strong stuff on session work&also duet form.this Collection captures her Solo work which still sounds good."Sinner man" is the Cut.a Artist that hasn't gotten Her full due.
Back In Print!!!.......2004-11-28
This CD contains all songs from Valerie Simpson's 2 LP's released in the early 70's. If you are looking for "The Best of Valerie Simpson," which is out of print, buy this. It has all the same songs, plus 4 more. My favorite is still "Sinner Man," which has the best gospel music I ever heard. An interview with Valerie is printed in the liner notes of the CD.

Amazon.com essential recording
Balancing raw power with shades of vulnerability, Gaye rose to the top of Motown's roster without the benefit of a supporting vocal group. Whether singing love songs or social commentary, Gaye's voice displays an earnestness and sincerity that are a soul singer's most potent weapons. Among these 47 hits are his memorable duets with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, and Tammi Terrell along with Motown staples such as "Can I Get a Witness," "How Sweet It Is," "Ain't That Peculiar," and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." This 2 CD set also covers socially conscious 1970s originals such as "What's Going On," "Mercy, Mercy Me," and "Inner City Blues." Only his last hit, "Sexual Healing," is left out. --Marc Greilsamer

best of marvin gaye.......2006-03-20
i had the original motown cd...the one i ordered from
amazon was a HORRIBLE sound quality. the outside of the cd
said it was done in 'germany'...the sound was hollow and
scratchy. i returned it with a minimal amt of trouble.
An impeccable collection of classic Marvin.......2005-12-13
I am not used to writing reviews but I had to for this item. This is the most comprehensive collecion of classics from Marvin Gaye, especially the second disc. He has had such an influence from Soul and R&B to Hip-Hop and continues to be a legendary force in music. If you are seriously considering purchasing a Marvin Gaye album, please go with this one. It will give you a balanced and enjoyable experience with the beauty of his music and will leave you wondering why you hadn't done it sooner. I was 18 when I "borrowed" this album from my mother and don't think she will love it as much as I have consistantly loved it for the past 5 years.
Amazon has double listed the 2nd disc.......2005-04-04
The track listing for the second disc has been repeated. There are only twenty (20) songs on the second CD, not forty (40).
BTW, great album. This is the best 'best of' collection/ compilation/ anthology of Marvin Gaye's work, outside of the box set.
Superb anthology .......2004-11-28
Marvin Gaye was a great singer who lived from 1939-1984. He had a tremendous vocal ability that allowed him to sing sweet soul music, politically-aware commentaries, hard funk, disco-ish stuff and eco-friendly classics all with equal conviction. As a boy in 1985 I remember TWO tribute songs to him that charted in the US Top 10 - a measure of the esteem in which he and his music was held. As one of the original Motown artists, he helped to define the golden era of mid-60's pop music, and trumped even this with his great album What's Going On in 1971.
This superb anthology from the Motown vaults is packed with great songs, and I have been a big fan of this record since discovering it in 2001. I cannot recommend this more highly to those Amazon shoppers who may yet be unaware of this great vocalist.
By the way, these Motown Anthology 2CD sets are not to be missed. Try out The Supremes and The Temptations also in this series.
5 stars!!
The Diary of a Motown and Soul Music Legend.......2004-05-18
Now I know that some of you are disappointed that Marv's last hit (at least on the pop charts), "Sexual Healing", is not in this fabulous collection of classic hits but let's face it, it chronicles his time as a MOTOWN artist. So of course they weren't going to include an out-of-label hit even if the hit was viable to that star's career. Same thing they did with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson's anthologies.
Anyway, this 2-CD (or 2-tape) collection of 67 songs, 40-some known hit singles and some album cuts, b-sides and rarities is the PERFECT album for a true artist like Marvin Gaye was. Many cats can only wish that they can have the hit catalogue that this brotha from the Chocolate City had! I mean, he was not only just a popular singer who recorded some of the 20th century's greatest songs and albums known to mankind, but he was also a great writer, producer, arranger, mixer, musician and instrumentalist not to mention he already had a career as a lead singer of two R&B groups in the late-'50s before signing with Motown in 1961 to be a jazz singer (his original intention of rebelling against what people were telling him how he should be).
And then you can't forget his LEGENDARY and AMAZING duets with classic R&B female legends like Mary Wells (the first female superstar of Motown), Kimberly Weston, the wonderful and memorable Tammi Terrell and last but not least the Motown Queen, Diana Ross. So not only has his career spread four decades but in the middle of it, he was able to be in a couple of groups, be a legendary duet partner and he even played in a couple of movies or three.
But anyway back to the anthology set of Marvin! The man's hit career spreads into three or four or even five different periods at a time:
Suave Gentleman (1962-67)
Soul Loverman (1967-70)
Patriotic Ghetto Warrior (1971-1972)
Romantic and Erotic Ladies' Man (1973-1977)
Confessional Ghetto Preacher (1978-1981)
The first CD (full of 20 solo hits and 7 wonderful duets) may be the most interesting of the anthology set. It shows Marvin at first reaching his inner Sam Cooke in the early portion of his career going from "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" to "Baby Don't U Do It" and then finding his own voice slowly from "How Sweet It Is" and then finally finding his vocal POWER in songs like "You" (check out the HIGH note near the middle of the song!) and "Grapevine". And then there's the memorable duets with Tammi Terrell that are the essence of true soul. Marvin & Tammi should both be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame just for the five songs listed on the album.
But then again, the second CD of the anthology set can be the most complex! I mean, this is when Marvin Gaye took FULL ARTISTIC CONTROL and gave us the legendary albums WHAT'S GOING ON, TROUBLE MAN, LET'S GET IT ON, MARVIN GAYE LIVE, I WANT YOU, HERE, MY DEAR, and IN OUR LIFETIME (which was Marvin's first entry into the '80s). You would fall in love with the different production of "What's Going On", without so much of the people talking and just the music, it also shows more of Marvin's vocal backings in its beautiful pitch. "God Is Love", even with its short time, is classic MOTOWN with a gospel-soul feel to it. You had a feeling R. Kelly was listening closely to this album while making Step In The Name of Love. "Sad Tomorrows" with its different feel of a bluesy and classical feel and with that soul is different from the album version (Flying High) from What's Going On and it's also breathtaking that you have to play it over and over. "The World Is Rated X" and "You're The Man" is the brotha's finest work as a political preacher as he sung about the social ills of the world and the political administration. And of course songs from the wonderful "Let's Get It On" album is produced brilliantly here. "Just to Keep U Satisfied" is classic doo-wop!
Then you get into the live recording of "Distant Lover" even while edited (for album purposes) and well it's still a masterpiece. "I Want You" and "After the Dance" are classics and of course "Got to Give It Up" is a blue-light in the basement party anthem that is still hot even after all these years. Finally Marvin's later work with "Here, My Dear" and "In Our Lifetime" are produced and helps brings a climatic ending to the entire 2-CD set.
From "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962 where he was in love with a girl but somehow stubborn to his or his woman's feelings to when he was looking for love in 1981's funky "Heavy Love Affair", it's particularly the Diary of Marvin Gaye. Nobody in soul music was like this cat and there will be nobody like him again no matter what you say! Marvin Gaye is forever the Original King of R&B! (TAKE THAT, WHITNEY, HA-HA!)

The Ike & Tina Era.......2006-06-27
This is some great music from a golden era. Funky and Nice!
Horribly dated.......2005-06-24
I like Ike and Tina. Well, I never met them, but I like their music. Great, tough, melodic soul and R&B.
I don't like Phil Spector, though. Never met him either, but just look at his hair...that's an evil man's hair. No, seriously. The Ike Turner-produced tracks here are pretty decent, although not among his best, but the Spector-stuff has been completely and utterly spoiled by overwhelming string arrangements, blaring horns, and the slickest production ever. Absolutely awful, the antithesis of grit (and soul for that matter).
Wall of sound indeed. Smack!
Phil Spector Brings The Best Out Of Ike and Tina.......2002-07-12
I'll be honest. The only reason I like this album is because of Phil Spector's contributions. I happen to think that Tina Turner is somewhat overrated, and I'll also point out that, "River Deep," is the only appearance she makes in my most impressive music collection. This album is Phil Spector's moment of glory. The Wall Of Sound he creates on here sounds as if it's about to explode through the headphones. He went for it all on this one, and although it was a bomb in the US commercially, it stands as one of the most successful pieces of pop art to come out of the 60s (and that's sayin' a lot).
Some unique tracks... not all Spector........2001-12-18
Other reviews will tell you how excellent this album is. I just want everyone to realise that the tracks were produced by Ike Turner, EXCEPT 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10 (produced by Phil Spector). 'Hold On Baby' is a good bit of Turner-Spector frenzy, and has only ever been issued on this album.
Ike & Tina and Spector stereo classic.......2001-11-20
This album is one of the most influential albums of all time and is a highlight of Phil Spector's career. A few of these songs: I Idolize You, A Fool In Love and It's Gonna Work Out Fine were hits when they were signed to the Sue label and the original versions are on the "Proud Mary: The Best of Ike & Tina Turner" compilation on EMI which is THE essential compilation of their hits spanning their entire career but with nothing from this album although that compilation does have an inferior remake of the title song from this album. The title track of course is the most essential track of the album but the rest of the album is as well produced as this album. I actually have another CD pressing of this album that features this album in stereo plus "Sonny Charles & The Checkmates, Ltd.'s "Love Is All We Have To Give" on CD in stereo, featuring "Black Pearl" as a Spanish import The Sonny Charles album is not available on CD otherwise. As mentioned in another review, all songs from this album that are on the Back To Mono boxed set are in mono, the stereo versions are great while I'll add that another mono copy of the title song is on Tina's "Simply The Best" compilation from 1989 on Capitol with her 1980's comeback hits.

Thirty or so of Stevie Wonder's biggest hits--many of them enduring classics--make up this double disc. That's the good news. The bad news is that they're sequenced here about as well (or maybe not) as your CD player's "random" function might do it. Leading off with "Part-Time Lover"--a major chart record, no doubt, but hardly the rouser you'd expect for an opener--is puzzling enough. It's when the programming starts veering from highlights of his self-produced period ("Sir Duke") to Motown assembly-line pieces ("My Cherie Amour") that the head-scratching really begins. And don't try to count the great moments that are missing. This will do in a pinch, but if you own no Stevie, be advised that better overviews of Wonder's career (the finest by far being the four-CD box At the Close of a Century) are available. --Rickey Wright

Musical genius.......2007-05-26
I often wonder what it must be like to be a musical genius, and whenever I listen to Stevie Wonder I find the answer. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a singer (despite being tone deaf), so I appreciate anyone that has true musical ability. Not only does Stevie have a great voice, he can play practically every instrument invented. One of the words that comes to mind when listening to him is "awesome". That's all you can really say about him. His music is timeless. From "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" to "Do I Do" and "That Girl" (my favorites) he just shines and shines. This is real music by a real artist. No matter how many times I listen to this CD, I'll never tire of it. Excellent.
Stevie wonder.......2007-02-24
This was a gift to my daughter. She loved it
Wonderful, Just Wonderful.......2007-02-03
I was a baby and a little girl when most of these songs were released but I grew up with admiration and respect for his music. Throug out my life there was always a popular Stevie song out but I never paid much attention. Listening to this collection brought back so many wonderful times and allowed me to realize the exact kind of genius Mr. Wonder is.
I blast these cds at work everyday. I'm really not supposed to and I try to keep the level at an enjoyable tone but it's pretty hard, plus there's been quite a few people that stop by and tell me to turn it up. His songs are feel good all the way through.
There are better compilations, but this one is a good start!.......2006-10-26
Stevie Wonder... A WONDERFUL musician and singer! If you're planning to have all your SW LPs and singles collection on CD, start with this album. The magic of Stevie Wonder's music is forever!
Greatest Hits is the Greatest Ever !!!.......2006-03-29
These songs are timeless. They take you back to that place in time when things were REALLY hap'ning. I can't stop listening to it. All my friends wanted to know how I could find so many of Stevie's songs that were THAT good all in one collection.
