The Strong As Steel Band is composed of 7th and 8th graders from Mt. Morris School in western New York State. All 7th and 8th graders learn how to play the steel drums and are part of an intergrated arts curriculum program. This program is a student-run corporation that runs the steel band corporation as part of the curriculum. To learn more about this exciting program visit mt-morris.k12.ny.us/jrhigh/steelband.htm. The students are guided by the Jr. High Teaching Team: Sharon Brown, Marty Coates, Tracy Perterson, Kathie Palermo, Brian Lewis, Colleen Dragt and teaching artist, Glenn McClure. Glenn McClure and his McClure Artist Guild provide over 1000 concerts, residencies and professional development workshops each year. The Guilds master artists and their apprentices have been integrating the Arts into a variety of educational settings for over fourteen years. The Guild offers concerts and residencies for both mainstream and special needs students, K-12. The artists' experience in multicultural arts covers a wide range, including Caribbean music and culture, African drumming and American Folk Music. The Guild also offers training opportunities for Artists entering the Teaching Artist Profession. GLENN McCLURE is a composer, performer and Arts Integration Consultant. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the State University of New York and studied composition with Dr. James Willey. His compositions have enjoyed a wide audience in the USA (St. Olaf College, Florida State University, Auburn University, San Diego State University, American Choral Directors Association Conventions in San Antonio, Texas and Orlando, Florida). Some of Americas finest conductors have championed his music including Dr. André Thomas and Dr. Anton Armstrong. Mr. McClures acclaimed Kyrie from St. Francis in the Americas: A Caribbean Mass was featured at Carnegie Hall in New York City by the National Youth Choir. His work has also gained audiences in Mexico, Italy, Poland, Germany, and the Czech Republic. His main compositional interest lies in the mixing of classical music with ethnic music traditions. Mr. , Oregon. Mr. McClure is also a passionate advocate for the integration of the Arts into the education of children. His award-winning work in designing and implementing these programs in both mainstream and special education environments has gained the attention of numerous public and private foundations.
