Who knew that the solid, staid old Berlin Philharmonic had such a groovy group of swingers in its cello section? One of them plays the maracas during the rests in his part, others slap their instruments with abandon, and some of them even shout at appropriate moments: if this makes them sound like trainspotters letting their hair down, it's not meant to. This recording of South American and South American-inspired music is full of joy from beginning to end, and played with the kind of accuracy other ensembles only dream of. The mood ranges from sultry and sweaty (Kaiser-Lindemann's Brazilian Variations) through coolly intellectual (the Fugue from Bachianas Brasileiras No. 1) to pure sunshine (Burt Bacharach's "South American Getaway"). The arrangements are models of their kind, and the cellists respond to their challenges with bravura and passion--at times creating sounds remarkably like a bandonéon, at others producing perfect harmonics in octaves or just singing out with pure joy. Wow - It's the cello-section of the Berlin Philharmonic, ok, so I expected a lot, but still this CD blew my ears off. What a performance! What a rare symbiosis of refined music making and unhalted moods and passion. Often, with lesser ensembles, passion is misunderstood as edgyness, even loudness... Not with these guys, and still, you hear every bit of emotion your supposed to hear. All pieces all my favorites, ALL of them, no exception. Juliane Banse is captivating, and together this gang of music makers is unstoppable. Legend has it that even the old von Karajan approved their performances (the Maestro in the Salzburg audience!). I am sure that these days also Sir Simon will concur...

I am in Caracas with the MD of this disc. I have been a fun of this team, and at this time, this disc gives me a right guidance to South America. The style of the play fits quite well for the Latin music. One remark is that if you buy this CD in Japan, you can hear another marvellous Soplano.

Some music, as Bacon wrote about books, is to be merely tasted and others digested. Many people ask me for music that can be played at parties (loud ones or sedate, indoors or out?), but seldom for music that stimulates the little gray cells. A recent EMI release falls sort of between the two poles. 7243 5 5656981 2) features the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic and soprano Juliane Banse performing some unfamiliar (to most of us) works by Villa-Lobos, Kaiser-Lindemann, Piazolla, Granda, Ben, Salgan, and Bacharach (!).

For me, the highlight is the beautifully sung Aria and Danca from the "Bachianas Brasleiras No. 5." Ms. Bancer's other vocal contribution is "The Kid in Blue Jeans" which is very reminiscent of the "girl on the curb" songs with which Piaf used to break your heart.

All in all, this is a lovely offering and the texts of the songs are included in the usual several languages.

    This is indeed an excellent CD. This recording came to me by sheer chance. I had never heard about Oscar Alemán before. Upon listenig to it, I thought to myself that Mr. Alemán must have been Mr. Reinhardt's most rabid fan, admirer and follower. One can hear the same intense expression, the virtuosity, the overstated vibrato, the rubato, almost careless but very tasteful. They have so many things in common.
    Then, I leanred that this was not merely a matter of hero and admirer, but rather, that they were contemporaries, almost the same age (Alemán was about a year older), and good friends that, although they never recorded together, they did jam with one another quite a bit. One is left to think whether Alemán was as influential to Reinhardt as Reinhardt was to Alemán.
    This particular CD shows how versatile Alemán was, doubtless much more than Reinhardt. Here he plays many rhythms and styles, from swing, to samba, to cumbia, to charanga, even to early rock & roll, all of it very tastefully.
    In terms virtuosity, as compared to Reinhardt, well, one must take into account the fact that Alemán did not have his left hand bured to a crisp! This is an excellent CD. I recommend it.

        This cd WORKS. I played this at a party, it made the sun burst thru the windows. Let me tell you this is a great party hit . It gives new life to the old Latino Classics. When you put the cd on your hole body start moving, possest by samba rythms. Nothing gonna stop you, or your friends. Great cd, great value, great samba.

        Album Description

        Mariachi moxie! Diana's spunky songs are a counterpart to traditional mariachi lyrics which point the finger at women as the culprits of men's woes. Most of the tunes are bright and humorous such as "El son del antojo" (a singer flirts behind her boyfriend's back) and "Mi novio Jose" (the singer invents a boyfriend to dodge a would-be partner). Diana ("La Platanita" ) dips into a serious note with the title track, a huapango about a painful break-up. Lyrics are included in a booklet. The instrumentation is traditional: voices, trumpets, violins, guitar, vihuela, and guitarron.

        This CD is nice for woman and make you laugh because is very logical about men. What I mean is when we want to go to dance, they say they are tired and want to sleep. Sometimes I get mad the same as the singer! So for pretty music and also good joking for the men, listen to this CD.

        Those of us who love music from down under--our USBorder that is--often appreciate Mariachi. The special quality of Diana's work lies in the fact that it gleefully presents a woman's point of view in a genre that usually portrays women as the source of men's unhappiness and reason for severe alcohol consumption. This woman's point of view makes us sing along, dance, and feel happy without beating down on men. This indeed is quite a feat. We should pay attention to Ransdell and Mariachi America. The music is wonderful, the sentiment and the words clear.

        Diana's music lightens the heart and tickles my feet so as to move me around my home with joyous cheer. Anything that moves me around is quite worthy of applause, indeed.

        ...In a continual ongoing effort to educate myself to the various diverse world music styles and genres, I have long sought for a Mariachi CD which was both AUTHENTIC and most of all INSPIRING - something which I could dance to, sing along with, and be motivated by.

        After listening to the first track of Diane Ransdell's CD I was AWESTRUCK. Further, I (a midwestern gringo) am living proof that you don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy what is truly great music. It goes to prove that great music is universal and can transcend cultural and historical boundaries and speak to the universal human spirit. As a professional orchestral musician, I was most impressed by the trumpet playing in this CD being equal to and arguably surpassing the finest trumpeters in the worlds greatest symphonies. AMAZING MUSICIANS - GREAT MUSIC - SPIRIT AND FUN -- If you are looking for great Mariachi or simply looking for music to inspire you, I highly recommend this CD.

        As an orchestra conductor and professional violinist, I listen to music many hours a day. In a continual attempt to educate myself to various diverse world musical styles, for years I have sought out a Mariachi CD which was authentic and most of all had music which could INSPIRE me (a Midwestern gringo) and also make me want to learn how to play along and dance and sing -- well,I WAS AWESTRUCK BY THIS CD!!! And further I am living proof that you don't have to understand Spanish to enjoy what is truly great music -- contagiously compelling -- full of spirit and AWESOME MUSICIANSHIP -- the technique of the trumpeters arguably surpasses the techniques of the finist trumpeters who play professionally in the worlds best orchestras -- just another example of how truly great music transcends cultural boundaries and IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR GREAT MARIACHI OR JUST WANT TO BE INSPIRED TRY THIS CD!!

        These are wonderful, happy songs! The music is bouncy-it makes you want to dance around the room. I especially get a kick out of the subject matter, however, because so many of songs talk about men. (And the verdict is not all positive.) The funniest song is "No te soporto mas," which means "I can't stand you anymore." The woman singer complains that the guy snores like a bear, and he's a lousy kisser! Another song complains about a singer who thinks he's hot stuff, but he leaves a lot to be desired. This CD is light-hearted, though. I never get the feeling that Diana is really against men, only that she likes to joke about them. (Incidentally, "Diana" has also written a novel; what a coincidence that it's about a mariachi player!)
