Au Theatre De L'Etoile

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
A live concert from Yves Montand, an enormously popular singer in France from the 1940s until his death. He gave concerts around the world, but was better-known internationally as an actor. Largely because of language barriers, his appeal as a singer was restricted mostly to his own country, but there it was gigantic!

4 out of 5 stars Vive Charles Trenet -- But, a more complete version of this recital is available, and at cheaper cost!.......2007-04-26

This recording of a 1952 recital finds "le fou chantant" in top form. Though it's just the singer with piano, the performances have just as much panache as his studio recordings with full orchestra. His nimble baritone, crystal-clear diction, and engaging patter weave pure magic. I have most everything Trenet recorded (more than 40 CDs' worth) and I would say this is among his best live performances. He delivers both tender ballads and surrealist capers with equal aplomb.

My main purpose in writing this review is to let customers know that there is a fuller, 2-disc version of the very same event. It covers 28 songs, ten more than here; and the recording has been digitally remastered. Furthermore, the cost is even cheaper than this one! It's titled "Récital de l'Etoile Paris 1952" has ASIN B00004UU4E. With none of the numbers omitted, the recital is even more joyously effective. I recommend that you purchase that recording and not this one, though I don't regret terribly having been tricked into buying both!

Trenet is a miracle -- in a career spanning 60 years he produced more than 400 songs exhibiting a happy, endearing blend of the ridiculous and the sublime, the accessible and the sophisticated. He never sang the works of others and never needed to, such was the divine generosity of his talent. (I think he recorded "Miss Otis Regrets" in French with his early partner Johnny Hess, but that was about it for covering other songwriters' material.)

The sound on the 2-disc version is excellent. Neither version has lyrics printed, which is par for the course except for the albums that came out in the 1990s. But his lyrics are readily available on a number of web sites. If you start exploring this marvelous artist's work in earnest, you'll want to purchase the handy little French paperback, Le jardin extraordinaire (ISBN 2253062979), which includes all his songs through 1992. It is available for a mere 5 euros (plus postage) from amazon.fr.
