Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

This is a much better acoustic orchestra interpretation than the one on the first Ayu-mi-x. The music has more depth and variety of feel; it reflects evident effort. The pieces range from single instruments (guitar or piano) to full orchestral arrangements. Having real human beings play the music provides an extra level of humanity and resonance. Perhaps that is what really connects this disc with the listner. The elegance of the arrangements complement her vocals to very good effect. Those of you who have listened to the original album "LOVEppears" and/or Ayu-mi-x II version US & EU, version JPN, will realize how much difference is made by the music. The tone and mood of each song take on a new facade. The underlying emotional quality is showcased and expressed to a degree not achieved on the other versions. Even though her vocals are thin, Hamasaki Ayumi clearly sings with passion and understanding. The artist pens her own words, and it is obvious that her life experiences contribute to the power and sophistication of her lyrics. Exuberance, strength, penetrant observance, determination, bittersweet reflection...the range she is capable of explains her widespread appeal. Anyone with a passion for music ought to appreciate the works of Hamasaki Ayumi. This is definitely quality.

Often compared to Elvis Costello, with whom he shares certain smoky vocal intonations, John Wesley Harding is working along the lines of another of his heroes, Bruce Springsteen. This collection, which puts one in mind of Springsteen's forays into acoustic music, features traditional folk songs recorded by the obscure but respected folksinger Nic Jones. (Jones withdrew from public performing following a 1982 car accident.) With little more than acoustic guitars and occasional accordion, Harding lights into ageless tales of unrequited love in which women are maidens and men are sailors forever lost at sea. Recorded over three days in a Seattle studio, Trad Arr Jones is a deceptively simple, powerfully immediate collection that casts its creator firmly in the troubadour tradition. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Punk sings Childe ballads, seaman songs, and other folk.......2006-03-23

Instant goose bumps. Think Elvis Costello or a young Graham Parker singing Childe ballads, seaman songs, English plainsong, and folk rounds with spare accompaniment (variously guitar, mandolin, accordion). Think punks singing their tattoos away at the end of a night of beery-good fellowship. Think Manchester street toughs finding grace and a way home to a world before machines, struggling wity heightened human feelings of yearning, frailty, heartbreak, and about death. Think a regular guy finding English folk in his blood, but no standard folk way to let it out.

Tracks 12-15 use a full electric band and are characteristic of his other work. But they work well here too. [73:18]

1 out of 5 stars This CD is better in its case than in the player.......2003-05-02

A total waste of possible talent, this CD is just awful on so many levels. Wes is off-key in many of the songs, and his voice is unconvincing and irregular. In theory this album is a good idea, but the execution is so painful. I've really tried to get into this CD, but in the end, I taped it to the ceiling in my office, so nobody has to listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2000-03-18

I have been a fan of Wes for years, but this album exceeded my expectations. These songs are incredible, giving credit to Nic Jones, and the interpretations are wonderful as well. Now I want to go get more of the original work of Nic Jones, if it weren't out of print.

Buy this album - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2000-01-16

I first heard Litle Musgrave on KPFT, Houston Community Radio, on the way to work. So different, a wonderful story line, perfectly executed. I immediately ordered two copies of the CD, one for myself, one for my son-in-law as a Christmas present. The entire repertoire on this album is to the same high standard as Little Musgrave. This has been a wonderful introduction to the Nic Jones style and I shall be delving further into this type of music. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars A must for fans of Wes and/or trad. English folk music.......2000-01-09

This is an excellent collection of tunes. The arrangements are sparse(usually just guitar and vocal) but quite beautiful. The respect and love that Wes has for these songs and the underappreciated Nic Jones really comes through in the music.

4 out of 5 stars Great Single From "Figure 8".......2000-11-21

This single came out a month or two before Elliot's latest album, "Figure 8". it was put out pretty low-key, but it's contents should are worth the listen. Track 1 is "Happiness" which is an amazing jump from most of his previous soft work, with some truly incredible and introspective lyrics. though the opening lines of the song seem to focus on other characters that Elliot is commenting on, the final lines of the song are repeated from a 1st person perspective of "All I used to be, will pass away and then you'll see, that all I want now is happiness for you and me". quite the emotional gesture. The second track on here is the gem "Son of Sam", but what the single does not point out is that this is the acoustic version of the song, not found on the full album. This is the track that really makes the single worth owning. Elliot even encorporates a harmonica solo into the folky story. this single is definately worth the few bucks it costs!

3 out of 5 stars Good but not as good........2000-04-14

Let me just say at the outset that I love Elliott Smith and I would whole heartedly recomend any project he undertook. Check out the upcoming Figure 8 by the way. However this single seems a bit weaker than his other/older stuff. I and other fans can only hope that this is not a sign of things to come now that Elliott is with dreamworks. The single seems a bit too far on the pop side of things for me, although the more I listen to it and especially Son of Sam I have really learned to appreciate the vibe found therein. Enjoy but you might wanna get some other stuff by Elliott first.

    5 out of 5 stars a preview of a fantastic album.......2000-03-14

I've been lucky enough to get a copy of a copy of the new Elliott Smith album, "Figure 8"(I know someone who knows someone who has a connection). Believe me when I say it's going to be known as one of the great pop records of the past several years. The production is lush, like "XO", but the songs sound much better suited to the production this time around -- and they're better, too.Only "Waltz #1", "Baby Britain," "Oh Well Okay" and "Bottle Up and Explode" compare to the new stuff. "Happiness" and "Son of Sam" are just two of the many standout tracks on the album. "Happiness" has a great melody, a nice, reverb drenched vocal, and a kind of "Hey Jude"-like fadeout that is nicely, abruptly cut off, leaving just Elliott, his guitar, and a drum. I've heard and enjoyed the acoustic version of "Son of Sam," but it has nothing on the full band version of the album, which is the first track and is absolutely stunning. Elliott fans, you can blanch at this prospect, but "Son of Sam" is an air guitar type of rock and roll song, and in the best way possible. Get the single, get your Elliott fix, and prepare for the late April release of the incredible "Figure 8."

3 out of 5 stars Good introduction to "Figure 8".......2000-03-01

I very much enjoyed this newly released single, and due to it have high hopes for the upcoming "Figure 8." The production on "Happiness" is much like that of "XO" which at first disappointed me. However I find this to be a far better production job than that of "XO". The ending of the song makes up for everything, where the full band is playing, and as if someone slapped the record to a full stop, all the keyboards, electric guitar, and backing vocals come to a stop, leaving nothing but the bass, light drums, and Elliott Smith singing and strumming. An excellent ending to this song. The second track, "Son of Sam" gives hints of Smith's earlier recordings with the two guitars and harmonica. Excellent track, and worth the price on this single, because it will likely be a full band version on "Figure 8".
