5 out of 5 stars Another Best of Mehdi .......2007-07-06

"Every album should be called Best of Mehdi," another reviewer once said.
Amen. It's everything everyone says it is. And it was absolutely worth the wait.
Yes, good cover choice; love the white horse.

Where's our DVD, Concertmaster?

5 out of 5 stars Delightful, Relaxing, Wonderful !.......2007-06-29

I also purchased this CD based on the reviews and I'm truly glad that I did. This is Mehdi at his best. I've only listened to it a a few times since I received it, but I know I'll be playing it often. It's especially nice in the car, because it brings the surrounding natural scenery to life. Recommended !

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but not the best I've ever heard........2007-06-29

I bought this based on other review I read on Amazon cold-turkey. It's nice, but not up to the calibur of other albums I have in the same genra.

I wouldn't not recommend it, but I wouldn' rave over it either.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Nirvana - Where sound quality, artistry and composition come together........2007-06-25

Power up the stereo. Turn the lights down low. Don the headphones and energize the CD player. Relax. It's time to enter a world of virtuoso musicianship, of soundscapes that take you to another world. Close your eyes and listen. You're no longer alone but surrounded by beauty and floating into Paradise. You move seamlessly between this world and the next, the music weaving a tapestry that transcends the distance and the times.

Mehdi's Instrumental Paradise is a special recording in that it captures the soul and essence of one of the great musical visionaries in our time.

Mehdi has been playing the piano since he could reach the keys and has composed music for many feature films prior to embarking on his Instrumental musical journey in the mid-90's. Mehdi's music (a mixture of Middle Eastern, Celtic, Greek, Southern European and Spanish or at times Moorish set to neo classical and more modern influences) defies the current practice of cataloging each artist into a standard category. Above all else, this is music for the adventurer in each of us.

Mehdi is the feature artist showcasing his wide-ranging Piano and mesmerizing original compositions. But this is by no means a one-person show. Flutist Dan Jenks, Violinist Tony Ragetti, Percussionist Yoshi Masayuki,Cellist Jesse Von Unwerth,Persian Oudist John Bilezikjian,Guitarist Michael Barbieri,Sitarist Daniel J Gupta are just a few of the virtuoso musicians on this master piece.
They add their tremendous musical talents to a recording that truly is more than the sum of its individual parts. Each of these musicians are talented masters in their own right and have recorded with Mehdi as well as other respected and diverse musicians ranging from Loreena Mckinnett to Yanni.

The sound quality of this recording is beyond reproach. The dynamics and spatial imaging of the recording deserve special mention. This truly is a recording without fault: Over 59 minutes of timeless excellence in sound.

Mehdi's spirituality seems to be as little understood as his music. He is a musical and spiritual adventurer. Each recording contains compositions that deal with a wide range of influences ranging from Christianity to Mysticism to Islam and other faiths. One should be careful in not labeling his beliefs as well as his music. Just listen, learn and enjoy.

If you enjoy artists such as Secret Garden, Loreena Mckinnett,Enya, David Lanz, Phil Coulter, Yanni, classical, Celtic and other world music, or if you are intrigued by a musical adventure, Mehdi's extraordinary Instrumentals should be on your short list of future musical purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous sound !.......2007-06-25

A DJ here in Austin insists on calling Mehdi, "The Jewel of public television." While many of his fans are probably jealous that there's actually a station here that gives him airtime (KGSR, 107.1 -- a near identical twin of KBCO Boulder, 97.3), I've patiently combed public TV listings for months, and never seen his name once. Woe is me!

Ever since some cognoscenti used a snippet of his "Wedding Song" as background on an episode of "Northern Exposure," I've been hooked on Mehdi's compelling blend of inspiring melodies and middle eastern rhythms. The California Native and his bandmates are wizards with their instruments. Volume 8 Instrumental Paradise is a must for any fan of Mehdi's music; and I can think of no better way for someone unfamiliar with his sound to become acquainted.

For listeners with a sincere interest in the broad variety of music loosely aligned under the New Age banner, Pure Moods II will strike your ears as something less than a high-concept showcase for the genre and more as a mulligan stew of easy-listening favorites. This is not necessarily a bad thing; yet a recording marketed to the general public as a comprehensive, current, state-of-the-art overview of atmospheric music shouldn't include such ill-fitting oddities as George Benson's "Breezin'," a lite-funk relic from 1976, or "Emily" from jazz saxophonist Dave Koz. Happily, the 77-minute, 16-track sampler offers far more items of interest than irritation. It reaches back to 1983 to remind us of an ahead-of-its-time display of Celtic mysticism from Clannad ("Theme from Harry's Game"), and it both opens and closes with superb selections from one of the genre's most admired artists, Loreena McKennitt--very appropriate since, one could argue, discussions on the future of New Age should both begin and end with McKennitt's name. Despite its few warts, Pure Moods II is a good listen overall. --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars No where near as good as the first.......2007-06-14

I loved the first CD, so got the 2nd one. Quite dissapointed. I thought a handful of the songs on 2 were good, such as Firefly, but overall it just seems like they threw together a bunch of songs to sell a copy of a popular CD.

4 out of 5 stars Another Editorial Review.......2006-11-06

"Pure Moods was such an unexpected success that it launched a number of spinoffs and, eventually (and perhaps somewhat inevitably), Pure Moods II. Although it isn't quite as consistent as its predecessor -- George Benson's 'Breezin`' feels out of place among among these atmospheric cuts, but not nearly as much as Massive Attack's menacing 'Teardrop' -- but fans of the first will still find it to quite enjoyable, especially since it features Vangelis' 'Chariots of Fire,' Loreena McKennitt's 'Mummer's Dance' and Dream Academy's 'Life in a Northern Town,' three major oversights from the first Pure Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"

5 out of 5 stars Stunning and extraordinary compilation, a must have!.......2006-09-11

What a marvelous collection of mesmerizing music this is. I have been listening to this album all week, as I can't get it out of my head. Pure Moods are one my favorite collections as they bring awareness of similar music that goes together so well. The beauty of this album is the mix of music that evokes a certain mood, while not sounding all too similar.

Starting off with Loreena McKennitt's "The Mummers Dance" a hypnotic song from the first note that sounds like time travel from ancient Byzantium to the mystic Celtic seas followed by Montezuma, one of my favorite Cusco pieces. Cusco is a duet of two German keyboard players Michael Holm and Kristian Schultze who make their enigmatic music sound very original and South American. The music is not traditional; it's a mix of outer space, new age and pan flutes. Very interesting and incredibly likable.

"Nightingale" by Yanni is just incredible, every time I have it on I almost forget I am listening to music, I simply feel it and I am always amazed at how gorgeous it sounds and whenever I hear this song it feel like the first time I am hearing it as it stuns me.

Another favorite of mine, Adiemus makes an appearance, the interesting figment is that
the language is made up by Karl Jenkins, the sounds are not meant to distract the listener from the music. It is a mix of classical and world music with great freedom of movement and is the kind of music they use in breathtaking movie soundtracks.

Delerium's "Euphoria" almost sounds like a Madonna song, is lovely and spirited with a breath of enigma. There is also "The Weather Storm" by Craig Armstrong, another strong musical piece that does sound like an actual storm of music.

"Teardrop" by Massive Attack sounds like song everything knows they heard somewhere but they don't know what it is. My favorite part is the base beat, it sounds like the human heart.

The rest of the performers from Lovely and church like Clannad which make me feel like I am in an ancient monastery listening to the monks, to "Chariots of Fire" a classic from Vangelis to wonderful and earthy "Breezing" that sounds like the first day of spring to Enigma, to me the empress of New Age. This collection is stellar and each song is a 5 star to me.

This cd makes me happy; it's relaxing, lovely, and addictive and provides great inspiration when I need it to concentrate while I work on my art. Each song has been carefully hand picked to hit the listener with a magnitude of emotion and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who needs to sit back and be transported. The songs feel like caresses of ancient wind on the face and make me feel like I have been meditating for hours. Pure Moods is an excellent cd to pick up by someone who needs an introduction to new Age and relaxing music. So far this has been my favorite disc, but they are all lovely.

- Kasia S.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2006-09-06

If you are looking for meditation or tranquility from daily stress I recommend not only this CD, but the entire collection. I have all the Pure Moods collection and keep buying more New Age music. I feel I've invested my money in good music. I listen to pretty much anything from soft music, Rock, Salsa, Calypso to Dance-Techno music, but when I don't feel like listening to loud music, I listen to these CD collection, specially on a Sunday to reconnect with relaxation to start another heavy woking week. Also, if you like gospel, I'm sure you'll love these even though is not quite gospel music. You just reconnect yourself spiritually in this material world.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-05-31

I bought this based on the cover, I was at a flea market and loved the purple and intersting artwork. Now I have lost the cover but know where the cd is at all times, only 4 songs are songs I could live without (11-14) the rest are wonderful, amazing and truly a joy to listen to. I will be checking out the samples of the other pure moods, to see which one I will make my own, next. A great way to relax after a stress filled day, or start the day listening on the drive to work.

5 out of 5 stars Every Mehdi is the Best of Mehdi.......2007-07-06

Honestly, there is not a song on all eight Mehdi CD's that I'm not totally in love with.

If you are new to Mehdi, get this whole set if possible. If you don't, you are likely just prolonging the inevitable. I read another reviewer say that when I purchased my first Mehdi CD, but I didn't believe it. The day I received that first Mehdi CD, I quickly ordered the other seven CDs from SMI, and I waited very impatiently for them to arrive.

I'm certainly no expert, but to me, Mehdi compares only with Mozart: it's impossible to find a single composition that is not a perfect classic. And it only seems to get better with time.

5 out of 5 stars Nice instrumental music.......2007-01-09

I do not have what to say here - try to listen samples and feel the perfection.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest instrumental works. Period !.......2006-04-22

Mehdi has managed to achieve through these CD's what no one else has in contemporary instrumental music. He has come up with brilliant melodies. These wonderful, sweet, melodious and tuneful tracks are all his originals. I don't think anyone in instrumental music today can hold a candle to Mehdi's music. It is simply unbelievably that good.

I came across Mehdi 7 years back on our local FM station when they were playing his magical track, "Eastern Sunset." I hadn't even heard of Mehdi then. None of his albums were available in my city. Then, about a month back I heard another song on The Weather Channel and decided to look for Mehdi on the Amazon site. Much to my delight, I found him there. I instantly ordered this Gift Set without even thinking twice. I got my CDs in a few days time and, boy, is it worth every red cent of it. All the tracks are so very tuneful instead of boring, slow and out-of-rhythm mumbo jumbo you get to hear by other new age musicians. Even the so-called "legendary" new age artists are not in Mehdi's league when it comes to musical talent. All the tracks take you to another world where you are lost in the deep soulful melodies.

I have had the CDs now for over 5 weeks and I have been listening to them for about 8 hours a day. I personally believe that good music is about good melodies mainly and a good tune is the hardest thing to find in contemporary music. All the great, household names of today are basically noise. Even the giants of instrumental music pounding away their dull tones and tunes like Yanni, Kenny G or Robert Miles are flat and bland compared to Mehdi. I usually listen to music only from the sixties or seventies and only romantic music for that, although I am 29 years of age and 50+ as you might imagine. I consider it the real music. Mehdi is the only exception from contemporary music I like. In fact, I love his music. I strongly recommend this particular set of albums to all music fans. I think if Mehdi can get himself on a major network TV channel and into the top 40s, he would become the new instrumental giant of today. He has tremendous natural talent. It is not just the Piano-playing skills but the uncanny and rare talent to come up with out-of-this-world compositions. Don't miss out on the musical genius of today, buy this set without hesitation and you'll see how wonderful great music can make you feel !

    5 out of 5 stars A Total Mental "Vacation".......2006-04-19

I stumbled into the name of Mehdi from another artist review and decided, based on the reviews here, to purchase the gift set. The price per CD is good, I had a gift certificate to spend, so .. why not?? I am amazed at what I got for the money. The music is full of variety but is overall quiet and a very nice mind vacation if you need to get away for awhile. I have not been using my MP3 player much until I got this gift set and now I have loaded it up to the max and it goes everywhere in my purse so that I can listen when I get stuck waiting at Dr offices, etc. What a wonderful gift to myself!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mehdi - Beautiful, amazing music.......2005-10-18

The best way that I found to describe this music is this way: Of all the music that I own the music that is must played on my iPod, my home music system, and in my car is MEHDI. This music is truly a gift to your ears and to your mind.

My music tastes runs the gamut; from the Rolling Stones to Delerium, from Depeche Mode to the Chemical Brothers... yet I find Mehdi to fit most of the moods I find myself in these days. This music just makes me feel better, period.

I don't know much about Mehdi, whether this is a band, a DJ, etc, and until this week I only had a single CD, Vol 7. After searching locally everywhere for more Mehdi I came back to Amazon and purchased this 7-vol collection. It's the best $95 I've spent in years. In fact, I decided to get an iPod Shuffle just for this collection, so I can carry it with me everywhere.

If you've never heard of Mehdi and came here by clicking links for "similar" music, from say, Delerium, then I would describe Mehdi as "Delerium without the mania" (and I truly love Delerium). Whereas it is hard, but possible, to find a Delerium track you might not love, it is impossible to find a Mehdi track you don't love.

If you have the slightest interest in this kind of music, you cannot go wrong with this gift set. If you can't lay out $95 right now, then start with ANY Medhi CD, just start listening, it will change your life for the better. It's the best cure for stress that I know of. Mehdi is sublime...

Kevin Burke's debut recording, Sweeney's Dream, was originally released in 1973 and marked him at the dawn of his career as a traditional musician of rare ability. He took many of the tunes here from the repertoire of the great County Sligo fiddlers Michael Coleman and James Morrison, whose recordings in the early part of the 20th century had a profound influence on the technique of Irish fiddling. Burke's playing on the unaccompanied tunes such as "Murphy's Hornpipe" and "The Strayaway Child" shows that at the tender age of 23 he had complete command of the traditional styles. But selections such as the medley of reels "George White's Favorite/The Happy Days of Youth/Coleman's Cross," which include such non-Irish instruments as 5-string banjo and 12-string guitar, hint at the more modern tendencies that would come to fruition with the Bothy Band, as well as his own bands Patrick Street and Open House. Sweeney's Dream may have been Kevin Burke's first recording, but his fiddling was at such a high level you would think he had been making records for years. --Michael Simmons

    Album Description

Hailed as "virtuosic and powerful" by the New York Times, Kevin Burke is a master of the highly ornamented Sligo style of Irish fiddling. Born in London, England, his strong family ties to County Sligo on Ireland's west coast immersed him in one of the Celtic world's most revered musical legacies. Performing with such seminal groups as the Bothy Band, Open House, and Patrick Street and with artists such as Arlo Guthrie, Kate Bush, and Ry Cooder further honed his superb musicianship. Recorded in 1972, this album captures young Kevin Burke's stunning artistry during his earliest years in the United States. Instrumentation ranges from solo fiddle to group pieces that include guitar, mandolin, banjo, autoharp, and bodhrán. 46 minutes, 17 tracks, 28-page booklet with extensive notes. Reissue of Folkways 8876.

5 out of 5 stars One fiddler alone keeping a pub spellbound in the old style!.......2003-04-05

Failte! (Greetings) Kevin Burke is one of the few fiddlers I can think of that could walk into any pub in Ireland, get out his fiddle and start playing through any of the hundreds of memorized traditional Irish tunes and keep his audience quiet and spellbound for extended periods of time absolutely alone. Kevin calls this "naked fiddle" with no other instruments involved to cover up what they call in the old country a "fiddler's fart." This is a follow up album to "If the Cap Fits," which is no longer available new. This is traditional Irish Music played the traditional way for fun and relaxation. Recorded in the early 1970's, this recalls a time before big budget albums and concerts. This was before competitions. In fact, if you had put a bunch of fiddlers together in the same pub, they wouldn't compete against each other. They would drink Guinness and jam until the "wee hours" of the morning together. This wasn't a primary "who the alpha male or female fiddler" thing. It was an enjoy the music and companionship thing. If you are building a Celtic Music Collection, this old style of playing needs to be represented. This album with "The Traditional Music of Ireland" by James Kelley, Paddy O'Brien and Daithi Sproule (which is still available but hard to access on Amazon.com) are excellent examples of this era of pub music. You can find Kevin's current music with the band Patrick Street either on album of frequent U.S. performances. Ceol de Erin Go Bragh! (Music of Ireland forever!)

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, spare, fiery.......2001-12-13

Burke sounds wonderful here, and every note he plays can be heard, as this recording was done without a backing band. Celtic music fans will enjoy this album, and fiddle people will treasure it.

Daniel is my favorite recording artist, and I would not be without this Classic Double set of two of his hit albums. For more on Daniel check out my reviews on his "Greatest Hits" and "Daniel O'Donnell Show" CD's.

In 1990 Daniel came to America to record "THE LAST WALTZ" in Nashville. This is a collection of beautiful songs with Daniel's melodic voice and impeccable timing doing every one justice. My favorites, though I truly enjoy every number on both disks, are HERE I AM IN LOVE AGAIN, A FOOL SUCH AS I, and MEMORY NUMBER ONE. The backup musicians are country at their best also.

"FOLLOW YOUR DREAM" was recorded in 1992 and contains an Irish favorite, GALWAY BAY, along with his hit single, I JUST WANT TO DANCE WITH YOU. I also especially enjoy NOT UNTIL THE NEXT TIME and BACK IN MY BABY'S ARMS AGAIN. The backup musicians also add their toe tapping talents to this album.

His exceptional rendition of HOW GREAT THOU ART is a fitting finale to this easy listening album. I am just so overjoyed that his earlier recordings have been made available for his new fans in America and elsewhere. These Classic Doubles Albums are an exceptional value. In my estimation his earlier recordings are just as good and equally as enjoyable as his more current releases.

    5 out of 5 stars A delicately imaginative journey.......2002-11-29

Touching on the Celtic, the Renaissance and the Baroque, these six women interweave them into sumptuous improvisations. Ensemble Galilei consists of Liz Knowles on fiddle, Deborah Nuse on bagpipes and fiddle, Sarah Weiner on oboe, recorders and whistle, Sue Richards on harp, Carolyn Ann Surrick on gamba, and Jan Hagiwara on percussion. Their sound ranges from musing to celebratory and airy to earthy, but is characterized always by the easy elegance of musicians who have mastered their instruments. The musicians have this to say about themselves: "We are committed to making music fiercely. We find music that speaks deeply to us, and we honor the traditions and dialects of each musical language... We find the place where our personal history intersects the melody, bass, harmony or chords. Revealed in these musical conversations are the essential parts of our own humanity." This recording showcases feminine creativity in all its rousing and subtle beauty! Ensemble Galilei has two other recordings that I know of so far: "Come, Gentle Night: Music of Shakespeare's World" on the TELARC label, and "The Mystic and the Muse: Celebrating 600 Years of Women in Music" from Dorian.

5 out of 5 stars From The Isles To The Courts.......2001-05-08

    \

It's very exciting to follow a group of musicians on their journey together, especially when that journey is made with heart, with fire, and with honor to tradition. Original tunes make easy friends with the traditional on this must-have CD. Love the Scollay's medley, for example, with The Dance Goes On as the last tune. It all works really well! The high quality of the sound itself, the strength of the original compositions, the sparkling arrangements and attention paid to choice of material all make this in my opinion the best EG so far. As a whole, it's great, but there are individual jewels here-- the mysterious Anna's Garden, the tender Cantigas, Liz Knowle's masterful delivery on anything, for example. Sue Richard's Aisling is just the best Sue Richards composition I've gotten to know yet. This piece provides a sumptuous musical (and magical) adventure, full of ideas to play with. Her work gives an added dimension to the collection. If you don't think Ensemble Galilei's work is groundbreaking, ask for this CD in your favorite music department, and watch the guy run around trying to figure out how it's categorized for display! It's really fun. "Ensemble Galilei...That's baroque, right? No! Should be under Celtic...no... uh, folk? Classical? Ensembles? Well, international? Okay, here it is, 'New!' Try it out, it's on the wall." No wonder he has trouble finding it. Their work is unique. It wouldn't be the same if this group of women didn't span decades in age, and possess wide differences in musical background. The group lives up to its commitment of "making music fiercely." Get it just for the cover photos! They're gorgeous.

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical Feast.......2001-03-10

The recordings of this talented group of women musicians just keep getting better and better. This CD is a rich blend of original and traditional Celtic material, from across the globe. The CD is like a multi-course banquet, with delicate harp solos by Sue Richards, spicy fiddling from Liz Knowles, savory and haunting Viola De Gamba licks from Carolyn Anderson Surrick. Whether I'm driving, cooking, or filing bills, I play "From the Isles to the Courts" and my work is easier, my journey more worthwhile. I've been a fan of Ensemble Galilei since I first heard them perform a few years ago, but they've outdone themselves this time. "From the Isles to the Courts" is truly a musical feast.

Pop music: what a fickle, bizarre universe. Just think of all the beautiful songs you have loved and forgotten. They lived for a moment in your excited consciousness, and then faded away.

How many bands must come and go before the perfect song is written? Well, we all have a few candidates.

I think Mike Scott captured it in "The Return Of Pan." It is elemental, rambunctious, Druidic, Bacchanalian, headbanging, and just plain cool. How many rock songs compare Greek legend with Christianity? Yeah, go ahead, start counting.

I am reluctant to put on this music. "The Return Of Pan" always gets me amped up and dancing like some stupid hippie. Okay, maybe I am a stupid hippie.

Thank you, Mike, for reminding me of what I knew before.

4 out of 5 stars Another change in direction.......2002-04-26

It is now several years since I first purchased this disk - and with the perspective of histroy it is easier to put into some kind of context.

It was a few years between "Room-to-Roam" and this album and thus when it first appeared it was grabbed at with some delight -Mike Scott had actually put out another album! The first few listens were hugely disappointing - after his definitive "Big Music" and journey into fun "Irish Folk/Pop" this turn in the road was, at first, a disappointment. It was relegated to the unlistened to pile for a few weeks. Then out of curiosity I put it on again one day - suddenly it grabbed me and I really began to like it. Skip track one - and just relax into the rest of it - it is simply fun tuneful pop - don't even bother thinking about it! Who wants to get intellectual about the Waterboys anyhow!

A stand-alone Waterboys' album - but certainly one that should be in the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Back On Track.......2000-11-05

Relocating to New York, Mike Scott left behind his bog standard infatuation with Irish music and returned with this cracker that pushes a barrage of rock guitars and life affirming songs to the fore. Opener, 'The New Life', epitomised his new approach, whilst the wide-eyed rush of 'Glastonbury Song' and the mystical goofiness of 'Spiritual City', hinted at a new found spirituality. There's variety aplenty here, whether it be the country waltz of 'Corn Circles' or the feverish psychedelia of 'The Return of Jimi Hendrix'. Scott's an endearingly eccentric character with a vivid imagination. Keep on dreaming.

1 out of 5 stars Their worst album ever. Listen to sample tracks........2000-10-09

It's human nature to like upbeat reviews-- we're all in the mood to buy, and who wants to read a negative review? Yet, with apologies, I advise everyone to either pass on this CD, or to listen to the sample tracks first.

When I purchased this CD and played it with my housemates, we were shocked at how formulaic and pop-sounding the songs were. This CD was a running joke for about a year... We would listen to the lyrics occasionally just to laugh at how stupid they were.

I truly don't enjoy dissing others' creative works, but BUYER BEWARE. This CD is the pits.

      4 out of 5 stars A Traveler's Dream.......2007-05-20

This is the first CD I have from Maggie Sansone. I saw that she has several out. It is very melodic and rather traditional Celtic music; very enjoyable. I would definately purchase another of her CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, mature and mysterious.......2004-01-02

This recording, subtitled "Celtic Explorations", is a masterpiece of understated intrigue. Ever changing, the moods and styles range from lilting, traditional Celtic and dreamy New Age to shimmering Persian taxims and innovative modern chamber music. Maggie Sansone's original compositions and arrangements are defined by her scintillating playing of the hammered dulcimer and supported by guest instrumentalists who provide gentle, multilayered accompaniments. Featured prominently is Bobby Read, an amazingly versatile musician who seems to play just about every wind, keyboard and percussion instrument under the sun! Also contributing are a host of other artists, many of whom appear as soloists or accompanists on other releases produced by Sansone under the label "Maggie's Music". They are: Al Petteway on guitar; multi-national fiddlers Bonnie Rideout (Scottish), Sara Nisenson (Irish) and Andrea Hoag (Swedish); flutist Aran Olwell; harper David Sheim; Debbie Hunter on viola da gamba; T.J. Johnson on mandolin and cittern; and percussionists Paddy League and Robert Jospe. The dreamy, imaginative wanderings of "A Traveler's Dream" are a treat -- something different and well worth hearing. If you enjoy this sort of music, you may like the innovative Celtic- and Renaissance-inspired work of the "classical" group Ensemble Galilei as well. Try also Maggie Sansone's other solo recordings, and "Celtic Mist: Quiet Moods From Ancient Lands", a sampler album showcasing the gentle elegance of various "Maggie's Music" artists.

5 out of 5 stars It rises from simple folk to highly expressive music..........2001-09-20

The hammered dulcimer is a perfect instrument. It's melodic in a percussive way, perfect for combining with other instruments. With the right musicians, the dulcimer rises from simple folk instrument into a highly expressive, extremely moving one. Maggie Sansone is a worthy musician who has developed a true feel for its capabilities. She wrings every ounce of emotion from it. In her hands, it not only dances, it swings. Her understanding plus her musicianship allows her not just to adapt traditional tunes but also to write pieces suited to it. A Traveler's Dream delves nicely into different cultures while retaining Celtic toots, with Sansone leading the way, assisted by the occasional addition of fiddle, guitar, percussion and more

5 out of 5 stars Mystical Moods of Celtic music and more!.......2000-10-25

Maggie's sixth solo release and it exlores in innovative ways.. music from Ireland, Scoland, Sweden, Cape Breton and the Northumberland region of England. Also are Persian and sufi-influenced compositions by Sansone and sets celebrating the ancient Celtic holiday's of Samhain and Lughnasa. This album is one of the most innovative album featuring hammered dulcimer around with its multi-layer textures and layering of sometimes 3 hammered dulcimer sounds together, plus various tonal qualities are explored with different textures of mallets on the strings and use of other mallet struck instruments and along with complex origianal compositions more like tone poems that takes the listener on a mysterious journey. A visionary meeting of Celtic and world music influences.

4 out of 5 stars A trip, not an adventure.......1999-07-02

Like Maggie Sansone's other recordings, this is tasteful, exquisitely performed, and a pleasure to listen to. The tunes span the Celtic world, and the arrangements enhance the qualities of the acoustic instruments rather than blurring them in an electronic mist. What seems to be missing is guts: the traveler doesn't actually take a journey (and return with blistered feet and a pack full of silk and incense), she just dreams about it! Or, to paraphrase the title of one of her other albums, she dances on the shore rather than diving into the waves. This is possibly my personal taste rather than anything actually "lacking" in the CD. But some tracks (such as the "Dervish" improvisation and the intriguing "Bear Dance") show hints that she's capable of considerably more original and passionate work, and I'd like to hear what would happen if she turned loose the Wild Woman side of her personality!
