Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.
Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

A great mix........2004-10-14
You have to like acoustic guitar but Dominic is a real master of it. I love listening to this album on long plane flights or any time I need to get away from the world and relax.
Pour a glass of wine, have a cup of tea, load this album up on your best speakers or headphones and enjoy the experience.

Homesick.......2004-03-06
I found this CD in chicago, where this brit now lives, and the tunes and themes are such a retrieval cue for sunday afternoons watching these old stiff upper lip black and white movies on tv. Just what I needed, although the addition of 4 weddings is slightly odd. Good quality recordings...:-)

Album Description
Meridiani Planum, Mars - February 14, 2004It's another cool, clear Mars morning, and the NASA Rover Opportunity is waking up to the majestic strains of "Pioneers of Mars". This song is from To Touch the Stars, the first-ever anthology CD of music celebrating space exploration. Capturing the attention of space enthusiasts worldwide, To Touch the Stars has garnered rave reviews from virtually every space-related publication on the planet.
The brainchild of best-selling author Dr. Robert Zubrin (The Case For Mars) and Prometheus Music, the project grew from the winning entries in a space songwriting contest sponsored by Zubrin, then director of the National Space Society. Zubrin repeated the contest when he moved on to presidency of the Mars Society, with Pioneers of Mars taking top honors. The anthem is "a touching piece, wonderfully encapsulating both the rewards and risks inherent in outer space travel," says Science Fiction Weekly.
Legendary Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin has endorsed the CD, quoting lyrics from the song "Fire in the Sky" in a nationally televised NBC interview after the Columbia tragedy. The album's sixteen tracks range from scientific to historic, whimsical to moving. It has found fans amongst schoolteachers and their students, planetarium directors, sci-fi fans, aerospace engineers, NASA leaders, and anyone whose heart yearns to break the surly bonds of gravity.
To Touch the Stars has been featured as part of the official Centennial of Flight celebration, created by Congress to promote awareness of the Wright brothers' achievements and the 100th anniversary of powered flight. It placed in the Top 65 most aired albums on the January 2004 folk charts with airplay in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Yuri's Night parties all over the world - celebrating the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's first spaceflight - have used the CD as part of the evening's audio entertainment.

Songs and Space for Everyone.......2004-01-18
Most of the public still greets the phrase "space activism" as a non sequitur. You might as well say NASA-Industrial-Complex activism or Giant-Faceless-Aerospace-Industry activism. The assertion that there exists a genuinely passionate grassroots constituency for space exploration and development (and not made up of employees of NASA and its contractors) is still considered preposterous by many. The Moon Race proved, did it not, that it takes a gigantic army of government and industry engineers, scientists, technicians and bureaucrats to send a handful of supermen to the Moon via a ridiculously expensive and impractical rocket system? How can any regular Joe or Joan relate to all that?
Who would possibly want to sing about all that?
Well, activists saw long ago that "space is not an agency", that space travel and development don't have to be astronomically expensive, and that someday, in a future already underway, anyone who really wants to go to space WILL get the opportunity to go.
The people who see this most clearly are the artists on this album. They see past the temporary technological obstacles to a marvelously exciting but difficult frontier that will eventually give way to the blossoming of life throughout the solar system.
So what do these artists sing about?
They sing of the glory and sacrifice on the frontier ("Fire in the Sky" and "Legends")
They sing about traveling in space themselves ("I Want to Go To Mars" and "Big Blue Sky")
They sing of the joy and fun of space flight ("Dance on the Ceiling" and "Dog on the Moon")
They sing of looking at space in new ways ("If We Had No Moon" and "Others Standing By").
They sing of the disappointment that we rushed forward and then pulled back ("Queen Isabella, Where Are You" and "Hope Eyrie")
And this diverse array of artists offers songs in many different styles. There's definitely something here for everyone.
Whether you are a space enthusiast or not, you will enjoy this album. Great music that transcends genres comes from artists genuinely inspired by their passion. Take a chance. If you do, you won't regret it. In fact, you might just be inspired to help us get to Mars!
To Touch The Stars.......2004-01-09
The stories that filk songs tell are for the most part stories of hope and adventure and challenge -- stories worth telling -- and this CD tells the best of them.
My New Years resolution is that I should get busy making new friends so's I can give copies of this CD to them.

Album Description
Lawrence Santiago's Axl Rose (Guns `n' Roses) meets Peter Garrett (Midnight Oil) vocals is a match made in heaven for the hard driving rockin' sound of the band he fronts, American Popular. "Sold Out (The American Way") is a knock-yer-socks off kick ass album with no bullshit allowed. Besides, who has the time for that when you can play as good as these guys do? Nothing new going on here, it is just straight ahead hard rock music minus all the extra polish and glitter that often is added to some records to enhance their sound and cover up what a group really sounds like. Their approach is obviously to get in the studio, play their asses off, record the tracks, then let people listen. It works very well for them. The are like the spontaneous combustion that happens inside an engine, the only difference is there is not a muffler to silence the noise nor anything to keep the flames from coming out.Santiago's voice is very flexible for a hard rock singer, he can scream, set a softer pace, or maintain an immense energy level with seemingly no effort. The music must carry him to that lofty level of vocal prowess. The variety of metal played is exciting rock, hard rock, metal, and all of the above come into the equation offering a variety of listener's different decibel levels. For those that like their music hard, fast and loud or a mish mash of all levels of intensity, it is here on this CD. They never loose their hard-core edge and their sound is comparable to what a live in the studio recording would be.
"My Therapy" was my favorite, no surprise there, because I need therapy on a regular basis, musical that is. In truth, all the songs were great! If you need to blow the roof off your house or your noggin, this will do the trick. In a world full of sell outs that give up their beliefs and original sound just to make it in the music biz, American Popular do it their own way, the American independent music way." musicdish.com
