Amazon.com essential recording

This is a great series of recordings. Leonard Slatkin has generally chosen the right balance of music for the composers used in the series (with terrific cover art from Thomas Hart Benton). This disc is devoted to Copland's film music. The treat here is a version of The Heiress Suite reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Copland's talent for writing for films rested in his ability to identify and maintain themes, at the same time not slacking on the transitional details. This belongs in any Copland collection. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars Aaron Copland: the Norman Rockwell of film scoring.......2004-06-14

When I purchased this collection I was already very familiar with Mr. Copland's more popular fanfaric motifs. I was astounded at how much I enjoyed the wonderful division of both sweeping dramatic themes and friendly, home-grown melodies. His film scores for the 1939 'Of Mice and Men' and the 1940 'Our Town' are a testament to classic films set in simpler times. The 'Red Pony' tracks for which the compilation is named are a magical digression from the listener's pre-conceived notions of Copland western fare. When one expects "Rodeo" (arguably one of Copland's most famous themes) one instead receives a gentler and sometimes powerfully moving score. The crowning jewel of this collection, however; is the beautiful suite from his Academy Award winning score for William Wyler's 1949 film of 'The Heiress.' When listening to this magnificent piece of musical history I am reminded how so many great scores are unavailable to listeners of today, and only through recreation and re-recordings can we re-capture those glimpses of film score artistry. I can only hope that many lost or hard to find works continue to be found or recorded so that film score and music lovers in general can continue to discover and rediscover the joy and beauty of our masters in film composing.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording of definitive American film music.......2004-04-08

In a way, filmgoers have been listening to Copland's film scores nearly every time they go to the cinema, since film composers have been shamelessly ripping off Copland for the last half-century or so. When you listen to the "Our Town" suite, do you get the nagging feeling that you have heard this music somewhere before? No doubt you have, in dozens of derivitave film scores from the 1980's and 1990's, sometimes (shamelessly) right down to the exact chord progressions.

How nice it is then to be able to go back to the source, and have rendered in so superb a fashion as it is by Slatkin & the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. Slatkin, as usual, upholds his reputation as one of the leading interpreters of American music.

This CD contains the premier recording of "The Heiress Suite," which is a delight to listen to, and of course the fairly well-known "Red Pony" music. Is their a more quintessential piece of "Western" music than the "Walk to the Bunkhouse?" How does a jewish boy from Brooklyn nail it on the head so perfectly, anyway?

Other selections include "Music for Movies," a collection of bits & pieces from an assortment of Copland-scored movies that Copland arranged in 1943, and "Music for Radio," an earlier composition that isn't really "movie music," but fits well with the rest of the compositions on this CD.

Instead of wasting your time on movie soundtracks that are nothing more than just derivitave hack jobs, listen to music by a composer who had truly mastered his craft.

5 out of 5 stars Leonard Slatkin conducts Copland.......2000-11-14

This album is worth it just to get the world premiere recording of "The Heiress Suite" reconstructed by Arnold Freed. Also of note are Walk to the Bunkhouse from "The Red Pony" and New England Countryside. Leonard Slatkin conducts these pieces with great emotional feel that states that this is the same America that Copland wanted to us to embrace.

Album Description

Equal parts rock, country, bluegrass, Latin, funk and jam, Steel Train is a band that gives full vent to every musical impulse in their collective souls. With their spectacular full-length album debut on Drive-Thru Records Twilight Tales From The Prairies Of The Sun, the New York City based quintet makes eclecticism respectable again. Released on April 19, 2005, Twilight Tales was produced by Stephen Barncard (Grateful Dead, Crosby, Stills, and Nash) and features guest performances by mandolinist David Grisman (Grateful Dead) and steel pedal pioneer Gene Parsons (Flying Burrito Brothers). The release of Twilight Tales is the anticipated follow-up to 2003's For You My Dear and 1969 EPs. Steel Train's music is marked by exquisite guitar work and sweetly insightful lyrics.

Chris Conlan from (BreakingCustom.com) should be dragged behind a shed and be beaten like a boy for his comments. This moron doesn't the know the first thing about music apparently. I've seen these guys play live twice, and they're live performance is their number one quality. Although the cd is incredible, and so experimentive. Everyone should check Steel Train out, they'll be huge one day.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-06-28

This record is so chill. And if you haven't seen them live, your missing out in life.. their live show is insane. Please check this CD. I dont see how anyone could dislike this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Dead Ringers.......2005-11-17

The last (abbreviated) cd of Steel Train paid homage to specific songs of the Sixties. This new, full-length follow-up pays homage to the musical styles of that very era-encompassing folk, country, rock, funk, Latin, and jam-band-thank-you-ma'am. The first 3 tracks on `Twilight Tales from The Praries of the Sun' had us believing we were about to hear American Beauty 2005, until we were abruptly jarred by the Santanic (note the crucial first `n' in that word) groove of the following cut. The Deadhead complexion of this band appears to have been consciously nurtured by the presence of former Dead associate, Stephen Barncard, who produced this cd, and by guest appearances by famed mandolinist and former musical partner of Jerry Garcia, David Grisman and pedal steel player, Gene Parsons (formerly of The Flying Burrito Brothers, who likely influenced and were influenced by The Dead, as well). The tracks on which those legends perform are easily the strongest on `Twilight Tales', but certainly not the only worthwhile ones. Even without the guest stars, Steel Train are a talented and versatile band. All the members are more than competent on their respective axes, particularly multi-instrumentalist, Jack Antonoff, a gifted and fluid guitarist. Of course, we would be remiss if we failed to credit the myriad contributions of the other members, Matt Goldman (guitar), Scott Irby-Ranniar (vocals, organ), Evan Winkler (bass), and Matthias Gruber (drums). All but the drummer contribute vocally. Steel Train's vocals are always pleasant and, when in harmony, capable of raising their share of goose bumps. The songs on Twilight Tales are, for the most part, thoughtful, heart-on-the-sleeve romantic, passionate and sincere, if occasionally lyrically awkward or wrapped in corn. As writers, especially, they appear to still be developing. Nonetheless, this is an innovative and risk-taking record. By honoring what has come before them, Steel Train have managed to steer their music steadily up the track.

5 out of 5 stars This band is gonna be huge!.......2005-06-22

These boys can play. Absolutely amazing music. I am a person who tends to enjoy music that most people have never heard of, and this album is one of the best. "Better Love", "Road Song", "Dig", and "Wake Your Eyes" are the best on this album. The 1969 EP is really awesome too. Check out www.steeltrainmusic.com for a lot of info and cool merchandise. This band is gonna make music history one day.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST Albums i've heard in a long time.......2005-06-13

I'd just like to say that this album seriously rocks. I really have to disagree with the first reviewer who gave it 1 star and bashed it. It's just too good of a record to pass up this opportunity to praise it. Steel Train is an extremely talented band who have produced a very diverse ensemble of songs on Twilight Tales from the Prairies of the Sun. Listening to them was like breath of fresh air. Each track brings something new to the table without setting the record off track. There is a great deal of originality while at the same time one can hear their influences in their music. They provide the listener with a great deal of diversity which I personally love. There are some great straight up rock songs, a number of nice ballads, some great folky numbers, and few Santana-esq tracks. But the beauty is that this is NOT a copycat album. It is highly influenced by many different bands BUT each song is undoubtedly STEEL TRAIN! They do not fit in with the rest of the other Drive-Thru Record's bands(which is a good thing) Unlike many of the talentless pop-punk/emo bands that make up almost ALL of the record label, Steel Train stands out very much. So if you're looking for a great listen from beginning to end, and a bit of freshness mixed with old-school rock that is undoubtedly diverse from track to track, check out this album.

5 out of 5 stars Digging Deeper?.......2006-06-02

For those who've heard those nice polished Swallow recordings of the Balfas and Austin Pitre this album is a nice switch from the studio to the home & dance hall. Plus we get to hear some very old Cajun folk numbers as well.
I'd like to emphasize that you might be better served listening to those polished recordings before coming to this volume. Find the Balfas "Play Traditional Cajun Music" and Swallow various artist compilation that might feature Austin Pitre's singles, as they are a "easier" introduction to the musicians than these field recordings. For the outsider, anyway...
First up we have seven numbers from Freres' Balfa, Dewey Balfa and his brothers Rodney, Will and Harry, accompanied by Hadley Fontenot, and accordionist. Hadley's brother-in-law was Edius Naquin, by the way, featured elsewhere in this compilation. Anyway, the Balfas give us an early workout of "Danse De Mardi Gras", appearing some 10 years later on their second Swallow LP, versions of "Lacassine Special", "La Valse De Bambocheur" and "Parlez-nous a Boire". The gem of the set, is a totally new cut sung by Rodney Balfa called "Valse de Platains". The group never re-cut it and apparently no one else did, as information is scant. Haunting cut.
Next is two live cuts by Austin Pitre and his band, the Evangeline Playboys. Austin Pitre was a fine musician, a fiddler and accordionist. These recordings crackle with energy, the most unusual thing is how they don't resemble Cajun music much at all. Odd enough, they sound like a pre-cursor to southern rock, the kind of thing that (the non-Cajun) Doug Kershaw was playing with on his "Alive and Pickin'" album in the 70's. Not bad, maybe a bold move for the time, but it sounds very systematic. Pitre is the one who had a hit with "Les Flammes D'Enfer" but here he sounds like its a song he picked up before the gig, didn't learn it, didn't even care about it. He also does a cover of "Valse de Bambocheur" (cleverly misspelled so that the buyer would not think they were buying duplicate tracks I guess), and musically, if it was instrumental, it would blow the doors off. The problem is, and even the most dedicated can't get past it: HIS SINGING. This man's voice could peel three coats of paint off the broadside of a barn. When people insult Cajun vocalists, they usually have Austin Pitre in mind. He was a great musician, that's what he should've remained. Until we get to... the next track! "J'ai Fini Mes Miseres", whose singing is that? Austin Pitre! Turns out, he's actually a capable vocalist. No bad! But why did he push it so much in other settings? This recording, not live as the other two, feature only voice and fiddle, which prepare us for Edius Naquin's part of the program.
Newcomer Kevin Naquin, a popular musician here in Louisiana, is the great-grandson of this man. He's also got Hadley Fontenot as his great-grandfather. Mr. Naquin couldn't speak a lick of English, and his contributions here are PURE CAJUN! This is excellent stuff, and these songs rarely if ever, have appeared anywhere else. Dennis McGee once said that Cajun music came down from folk, and you can certainly hear that influence here. In Mr. Naquin's vocal and fiddle performances, so much imagery is conveyed. Obviously, he spent time hanging around some real old timers as a young man (he was born in 1900 I believe), some old enough to have known songs about Napoleon! Short, but sweet recordings, a spirited conversation between the man and his visitors, and it's over all too soon. Mr. Naquin appears to never have recorded before or after. Sad news.
Great stuff here, if you are interested in Cajun field recordings, don't miss. Go look for Volume 2 also!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Cajun Tunes Here........2005-01-16

Overall, this CD is great. The Balfa Brothers are in fine form and Austin Pitre's sides were cut live at a dance. My favorites, however, are the Edius Nacquin tunes at the end of the CD. He sings some old traditional songs that go way back. "La Ville de Monteau" is one that even mentions Napoleon Bonaparte, so you know how old it has to be. This one is highly recommended for those who want to get a little more in-depth into the roots of today's modern Louisiana dancehall/festival sound.

What a misleading disk. It is not "super hits", but 2-5 minute sections of of these works. Do NOT buy this disk if you love the pieces that are on it. It will only make you wonder "where'd the rest of the cut go?" MAYBE there are 25 minutes of music total on this whole disk, chopped up into soundbytes. Copeland is rolling over in his grave.

5 out of 5 stars THE recording of The Lincoln Portrait........2000-09-18

There is something special about this recording of the Lincoln Portrait. The special ingredient is Henry Fonda's baritone Nebraska accent that sends chills down my spine when I hear his narration, even to this day.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Performances........2005-04-02

The Capricorn Concerto, composed in 1944, has not been frequently recorded which is a shame as it is one of Samuel Barber's most engaging works. The concerto was inspired by Bach's Second Brandenburg as it has the same solo instruments: trumpet, oboe and flute, but the composition owes a larger debt to Igor Stravinsky. The name of the concerto derives from the house on Croton Lake at Mount Kisco, New York that the composer shared with Gian Carlo Menotti. The concerto reflects the idyllic atmosphere of life at Capricorn. The concerto is laid out like a Baroque concerto-grosso beginning with a vigorous allegro followed by a quiet and reflective allegretto. The final movement with its trumpet fanfare is especially memorable and concludes the concerto triumphantly. The performance recorded here is marvelously played and nicely recorded.

The First Essay, composed in 1938, also receives a nice performance, the brooding music at the start being particularly well played. The orchestra perfectly builds the tension of the music to the powerful climax that brings us back to the opening music. The Essay is followed by Aaron Copland's Saga of the Prairies, composed in 1937, which was originally titled Music for Radio since it was composed for the CBS Symphony Orchestra. The work marked a change in Copland's style toward a more simplified method of writing music and is in the same spirit as Billy the Kid and Appalachian Spring.

The main work on this disc in the Sixth Symphony (Gettysburg) by Roy Harris (1943-44). This symphony is cast in four movements with program titles describing the music. Awakening (based on the opening lines of the Gettysburg Address) seems a visual representation of America, in general, and the battlefield prior to the battle that is to take place. It is a luminous and beautiful movement that slowly builds and takes shape weaving short melodies together. Conflict is a depiction of the three-day battle in July, 1863. The music progresses from a feeling of doom as the battle is about to begin to the fury of the battle itself. The music is some of the most dissonant that Harris wrote. The third movement, titled Dedication, describes the dedication of the battlefield, played by strings and woodwinds. The music has an elegiac feel, reflective and not somber. The final movement bears the title: Affirmation. This music is a triple fugue and begins with the same atmosphere of the prior movement, quickly building in tempo and volume as the music becomes more optimistic; a picture of the enduring human spirit.

This is a well played and recorded CD that belongs in the collection of anyone interested in American music, a definite must for those interested in Roy Harris.

4 out of 5 stars Only available recording of Harris Sym. No. 6.......2000-07-31

This disc is a collection of recordings that were originally on the Varese Sarabande label back in 1980's. The performances by the Pacific Symphony Orchestra are great. If you haven't heard this orchestra before, this is a great place to start. This is the best recording of Barber's First Essay, and I have several recordings of that piece. This is the only recording of the Harris Symphony No. 6 and, though the sound is not quite as good here as it was on the old Varese Sarabande disc, this is still a mandatory disc for Harris fans and for anybody interested in this composer.

            Album Description

Paul Bellows stitches literate lyrics into the ass of infectively melodic pants to provide ample cushioning for his bookish pop.

Paul Bellows is a songwriter from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Paul writes literate, melodic pop music and performs solo and with his band, the Dead Canadas. Paul began his musical career in Yamaha organ lessons in the back room of a department store. Moving through piano, trumpet, trombone and harmonica over the years, he quickly lost all interest in the early instruments when he stole his first guitar. After a short time in juvenile detention facilities, Paul rejoined society and began writing gospel hits. His short incarnation as a gospel songwriter was followed by a long stint as a retail manager and student of the Liberal Arts. Emerging from the land of denim and Foucault, he purchased a big fat acoustic guitar and immediately began to produce brilliant folk-pop hits. This string of smart, catchy acoustic numbers was captured on his first album, "Juliet Pauses", which received critical acclaim and led to several years of touring and performing at festivals
