Classic album!.......2007-05-21
Get Steamed!.......2004-05-13
In some sort of arrangement that only the 70's could produce, Scott stuck around long enough to co-write all 10 songs on the album. The new story that I submit is that Scott missed out on singing some great tunes. It was his loss because he wasn't needed anyway. Four unknown singers add the required blue-eyed-soul readings of this collection of great tunes. Sitting somewhere between the Grassroots, Grand Funk (!), and the Left Banke (all good!), Steam certainly performed well under the pressure.
One thing they tried was creating a theme album based on the "Na Na, Hey Hey" refrain. This sounds silly on paper but three songs -- including the hit that leads off the set -- utilize the refrain to great effect. A casual listener may think there is simple duplication scattered throughout the album but it appears to be part of a greater attempt to tie the diverse songs together. "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" is bubblegum but "I've Gotta Make You Love Me" is reminiscent of The Parliament's "Testify" and "I've Cried A Million Tears" is an affectionate ode to The Temptations. "Love & Affection" would have made a great single as well. The song structures in all the songs are fairly complex for pop but well worth the effort I suggest you put into it. This is a pop collection that demands deeper scrutiny.
Now the pressure is on for me to decide if Steam is bubblegum or not. "Na, Na, Hey, Hey, Kiss Him Goodbye" is classic gum simply because so many people have said it is. Steam is a blue-eyed-soul review that traveled the same road as Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, Amazing Rhythm Aces, and so many others. And although Steam ended up having the most well-known and used song of all these like-minded groups, they were forced off the road before they had a chance to gather up more Steam. Maybe it was unfair to label them bubblegum. In hindsight it certainly seems that way.
This is where I come in and profess a sense of loss that Steam ran out of itself after one great album. Of course, I'm the guy who likes the "real" Ohio Express, so why listen to me? If you love great 70s pop, you'll work up a bit of this group and hit the Amazon.com site and buy this great CD. Otherwise, hit the showers.
(The extras on the CD nearly complete the Steam catalog. Only "What I'm Saying Is True" the b-side to "I'm The One Who Loves You" is missing.)

Gentle on the psyche.......2007-05-17
Even though my tastes tend towards more dramatic performances (works by The Assad Brothers or Yang Xue Fei), I've really enjoyed this collection. It would make a good gift item both for the serious guitarist (Muraji's technique and interpretations are impeccable) or the casual listener. Your mother would love to get this CD, especially if she's a guitarist. Show her you love her and give her a copy.

Album Description
In the summer of 1999, the Zamir Chorale of Boston celebrated its thirtieth anniversary as well as the centenary of the Zamir movement with a concert tour of Eastern Europe. Performances were given in synagogues and churches, concert halls and museums, restaurants and courtyards, cemeteries and concentration camps. In Warsaw, Lodz, Auschwitz, Krakow, Prague, Terezin and Vienna we gave honor to the dead and hope to the living. Our live concert recording, The Songs Live On, is a witness to the excitement and spiritual intensity of our odyssey. Zamir is very proud to present this unique recording comprising selections from our recent European tour. Recorded during live performances in Lodz, Vienna, Prage, Krakow, and Terezin, these songs celebrate the return of Zamir to the land of its birth. Ranging from liturgical settings to popular songs, spanning four centuries, and representing composers from seven countries, our tour repertoire demonstrated the breadth and quality of Jewish music for Jewish and non-Jewish audiences alike. The Songs Live On captures the energy of these live performances and the enthusiasm of both Zamir and our audiences. If you couldn't join us in Europe, this is your chance to share in the music.

Let's Celebrate Ravi!.......2007-06-14
Disc 4: OK. First off, I've read some reviews here, claiming that this disc often sounds "dated and contrived". Well, I'm here to tell you that its neither. This disc is a favorite of mine, and unless you fall into the catagory of "Hindustani Purist", or easly see things as dated or the like, there is no reason not to open your mind to this disc. For starters, Friar Park is an absolutley GORGEOUS track recorded at George Harrison's mansion; behold how autoharp, sitar, and marimba mix, soncially. Then I suggest a huge favorite of mine, the funky West East Meat (what a title!) In it Ravi, and a few other Indian musicians basically jam with jazz bassist and the result is fun, and oftne weird (lookout for Ravi's utterances of random fraises in Bengali.) Fire Night is brilliant piece sure to win over jazz lovers, and Dispute and Violence, another hug favorite, starts off with unaccompanied vocals but quickly evolves into catch piece with with a brilliant hook. Tracks like Tana Mana are relaxing, in an almost hypnotic way, while the vocal offering, I am Missing You, sung in English by Ravi's sister-in-law, Lakshmi, is gorgeous in different sort of way than the other tracks: lyrically it emulates emotion and innocence and, despite arguable over-prodcution, still comes across as something fresh and different. In short, the open-minded will appreciate it most.Other material on this disc, such as the vocal offerings many of which have beautiful lyrical interpretations, will grow on you. 5/5 for disc 4, easily.
Finally, the sound qaulity is very good (except for a track or two where Gramaphone Company of India, Ltd, seems to have preserved material poorly), the mixes, and instruments crystal clear (you can really hear those tablas), and there is a booklet sewn into the package, so you won't be loosing it easily. The booklet offers a biography of Ravi, photos, and info on all the tracks, including Ravi's own notes, from which I draw much of the information for this review, and more. Also, lookout for George Harrison's brief introduction, which I quoted during this review. Overall, a wonderful music, wonderful sound, wonderful booklet= wonderful package. 5/5- A+. Let's celebrate Ravi!
Good Overview Ravi Shankar's Career.......2001-08-10
I find parts of the East-West and Vocal and Experimentation disc to be dated and contrived ,not too interesting after a few listenings and as a result I rarely play these discs.
Listening to this set will enhance your appreciation for Indian classical music and for Pandit Ravi Shankar.
The accompanying booklet is quite nice , although I would suggest R. Shankars book Raga-Mala. I also think that the current remastered Angel CD 's are a good value. For those looking for good overview of Hindustani music check out the Raga Guide: Survey 74 Hindustani Ragas .
captivating.......1999-08-05
Also recommended (for sitar players too): PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.
good mix of stuff, but NOT AT ALL for Hindustani purists.......1999-05-28
This record shows that Ravi Shankar is a genius!.......1999-02-25
