Points off for poor mastering, packaging.......2003-02-28
Many reviewers of other Clancy Bros. albums have complained about shoddy repackagings and haphazard presentation and noted that it's about time Sony/Columbia put some effort into compiling a complete set of Clancy Bros. recordings in proper sound quality. I heartily second this motion. ...

WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18
A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.
A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.
Rebellion and transcendence.......2002-04-20
My one regret is that this album lacks a traditional version of Wearin' O The Green (the Wolfe Tones covered it on Profile). Like so many classic Irish rebel songs, Rising Of The Moon was written about the 1798 United Irishmen uprising, and is the same air as WOTG, but lyrically it lacks some of The Green's power. WOTG was about the banning of the shamrock and St. Patrick's Day by the English, and when they sang "They're hanging men and women there, for the wearin' o' the green" they weren't kidding.
This beautifully remastered CD contains a very informative booklet, which gives something of the history of each song, and which singer is featured, as well as details about each of the boys, including Pat's former IRA connections. Street cred, or what?
There are so many standout songs here, including Tipperary Far Away (sometimes known as Sean Tracy) and The Wind That Shakes The Barley, which features the golden voice of Tommy Makem. While Tommy's version is quite simply the best rendition ever by a male, the greatest version by a female remains Lisa Gerrard's version on Toward The Within by Dead Can Dance (available through Amazon).
Truly a wonderful album, full of love, passion and ancient wisdom.

Wherever green is worn..........2002-06-01
For me, the standout songs are Wearing Of The Green (sadly few Irish artists have recorded this utter classic), Boys Of County Cork (the boys who beat the Black and Tans), Home Fires, The Pursuit Of Farmer Michael Hayes and A Nation Once Again. All of these song versions are every bit as good as anything you have ever heard by any Irish artist.
Home Fires is particularly strong, being a strident version, driven by some of the most emotive and attacking pipes playing I have heard in years. The version of A Nation Once Again is very sensitive and beautiful, and captures elements of the song that have been lost in cruder versions by other artists.
If this album contained The Wind That Shakes The Barley, I would rate it as one of the best albums of all time. Having said that, the greatest version of that song is still the version by Dead Can Dance (featuring Lisa Gerrard), from their album Toward The Within. To be sure.
If you are looking for a powerful and varied collection of Irish Rebel music, this album plus The Clancy Bothers And Tommy Makem's Rising Of The Moon and the Wolfe Tones' Rifles Of The IRA (all available through Amazon) will definitely hit the spot.
As I said, ridiculous value.
good eclectic collection of standard Irish rebellion music.......1999-06-25
I'd love to know for sure who the artists really are - I know some of the voices, and they don't seem to match the 'aliases' on the packaging

English Lute Songs
Manufacturer: Hyperion ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B00003ZAC9 Release Date: 2000-01-11 |
Amazon.com
This disc of 30 English lute songs and solos by 10 composers features divine singing from countertenor Robin Blaze and exquisite lute playing from Elizabeth Kenny. The music covers the first century and a half of modern English history--from the artistic flowering, which followed political emancipation from Rome, to the Restoration of the monarchy after which the lute became obsolete (until its revival by bearded Romantics in the 20th century). Some of the tracks are a little labored. The opener, Robert Johnson's "Full Fathom Five" from Shakespeare's "The Tempest," almost grinds to a halt. "Where the Bee Sucks" from the same source is similarly leaden, and Purcell's lute solo on "Lilliburlero" expects no one to dance. On the other hand, the duo's measured approach perfectly suits Dowland's "Time Stands Still," and the same composer's most beautiful song, "In Darkness Let Me Dwell," features the singer's most expressive singing. Blaze's haunting tone is deathly cool. Besides those mentioned, the disc includes songs by Campion, Lawes, Danyel, Reggio, Banister, and Blow. Blaze lights up on Matthew Locke's air, "The Delights of the Bottle," which is the most eccentric track on the album. Of the six tracks by Henry Purcell, "'Tis Nature's Voice" is the most grippingly performed. Blaze moans so vividly that one almost does not know where to look. --Rick JonesCustomer Reviews:
The Delights of the Countertenor.......2006-07-12

Mismatching............2000-09-07
Blaze and Kenny are try to make expression of feelings more plentiful and vivid recitation of poet. But they fail in this point. Relationship between vocal and performer because combination of poet and music are required vocal's expression and impromptu and momentary variation of rhythm and tempo.
This performance don't have any technical problem externally. But, Blase and Kenny are making excessive expression of feeling and performers are going with rhythm and tempo but not following their expression of feeling.
But several solo lute performances are very well i think. For example, Henry Purcell's "Sefauchi's Farewell" is played by lute. This is usually performed by harpsicord, but in this album, they are making good performance with lute.
I would like to recommend Deller. Have you ever heard Dowland's "Happy" in "flow my tears" and Purcell's "touch" in "strike the viol"? He was excellent of many counterteners.
