Fans of legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea and bebop/bluegrass banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck are well aware of the pair's previous collaborations (Corea guests on two Flecktones albums, and Fleck appears on Corea's Rendezvous in New York DVD), but their first full-length release should surprise even their most jaded followers. The two went into the project with intense seriousness of purpose, Corea writing four pieces and Fleck six. (The standard "Brazil" is their only cover.) They push each other hard in adapting their instruments to genres (bluegrass, country, Latin, ragtime, classical, blues, and world) normally outside their idioms, Corea playing 'grassy banjo patterns on the piano on Fleck's mournful "Mountain" and Fleck stretching on Corea's suite-like "Joban Dna Nopia." With few exceptions, the compositions are only frameworks for vast improvisation, which might be expected. But instead of setting each other up for extended solos, Corea and Fleck join together with breathtaking precision and verve, weaving and intertwining through remarkable contrapuntal excursions, only to break and meet up again in perfect sync. Despite the thrill of Fleck's chromatic chases and classical flirtations and Corea's mastery of difficult lines on Fleck's rippling "Spectacle," one can't help but think they would have benefited from a tad more instrumentation--especially bass and percussion. Perhaps that's the next step this wickedly inventive duo wll take in their ongoing odyssey of genius. --Alanna Nash

I'm waiting for Bela Fleck to put out a CD with a Kazoo master. He is such a fun and inventive artist. Chick Corea, as always, rocks.

I love Chick Corea. I love Bela Fleck. This album breaks new ground. Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Two Giants Become One.......2007-06-22

I was fortunate to watch these 2 virtuosos perform live at the Keswick Theatre in suburban Philadelphia to a sold-out crowd. To invite the audience into their performance, they kept the house lights on, and performed in their newly established duo, sharing with the audience their immediate rapport via emailing tunes to one another.

A preeminent pianist who appeared with Miles Davis, Anthony Armando "Chick" Corea was born in Massachusetts in 1941 while Bela Fleck, named after Bartok, was born in 1958 in New York City. The haunting banjo strumming and fingerpicking enriched Chick's phenomenal acoustic keyboard virtuoso, which are revealed on the CD.

It's always good to see musicians who continue to evolve through the universal language of music.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting and...enchanting........2007-06-05

"The Enchantment" is the first-ever studio collaboration between jazz pianist Chick Corea and banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, capturing the astonishing interplay between these two master musicians.
Immensely popular in their own musical spheres - combined, they have won an astounding 20 Grammy awards - they have forged a true collaboration with the release of this album.
I would not have guessed that a collection of songs this enjoyable could have been created with only piano and banjo, but these guys are so talented and innovative that it works.
A key aspect might be that ten of the eleven cuts were written by one or the other of the stars, and it's obvious that they know their own strengths -- and each other's.
Bela has been innovating almost as long as he's been playing the banjo. He's delved into the jazz world before, hiring jazz musicians to be in his band, and recording with jazz players at times. He's even recorded with Chick Corea before when Corea made guest appearances on two Flecktone recordings in the 1990's. But this new record is the first time the two players and composers have worked together to record a duet album.
As a duo, Fleck and Corea combine a variety of musical styles and flavors -- from blues to bluegrass, from classical to country.
The 11-track album released on Concord Records, features four compositions by Corea, including the title track, and six by Fleck. Also included is an unlikely and uniquely witty cover of the standard "Brazil".
The opener, Corea's "Seniorita" is a Latin-based tune, as are many of Corea's best-known compositions, but Fleck makes himself right at home, coaxing a classical sound from his banjo that is truly amazing. On "Mountain," which hews closer to the banjo's bluegrass roots, Corea has no problem finding his space and interjecting his own voice into the proceedings. Fleck's "A Strange Romance" bristles with gypsy influence, and again, Corea is right at home.
Though each performer is an amazing soloist and there are plenty of great solos here, it is often just as impressive to simply hear the way that these masterful musicians combine and interweave their instrumental voices to create something new.
An example of this is found on ballads like Fleck's sofly elegant "Folksy Waltse for Abby", Corea's "Children's Song #6" and "A Strange Romance", where regardless of which voice has the lead, the other twines its way in and around the lead voice.
And the title tune of the album, "The Enchantment", gives the listener a new listening experience, while at the same time retaining a comfort level not present in some examples of cutting-edge music.
I love it from start to finish.
Their version of "Brazil" keeps playing in my brain...and heart.
You will love it!

The soul of fusion lies not in the barrage of note clusters played through overdriven amplifiers but in the arresting beauty of Return to Forever's lucid vision of music without boundaries. The stunningly virtuosic pianist Chick Corea had already gone through an exploration of free jazz with Circle, tutelage in the Miles Davis Academy of New Electric Music and the soul-searching of "Piano Improvisations" when he arrived at his most brilliant conception. Corea and bassist Stanley Clarke fly through the proceedings, supporting Joe Farrell's flute and soprano sax playing in what may have been the performance of his life. Flora Purim's vocals and Airto Moreira's drums and percussion work discretely in service of the music's serenity. --John Swenson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Before Chick Ruined Fusion.......2007-06-06

Yo, Chick! Yanni called - he said thanks for the how-to manual. Like how to make overwrought bombast. Check out any "Elektric Band" offering and hear for yourselves.

However, RTF is almost beautiful: graceful, passionate yet trippy. Thank goodness for Stanley Clarke, Joe Farrell & Airto. Their masterful restraint, their willingness to let the music breathe, saves the album. Seriously, was Chick having an affair with Flora Purim, or did he lose a bet? Having her "sing" on this smells of blackmail material.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-05-21

A beautifully crafted album, one of the greatest works I'Ve ever heard from a truly jazz legend like Chick Corea.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Electric Piano Sound(ah where has it gone?).......2006-05-23

Released prior to his more familiar synth-laden jazz fusion offerings, this vibrant recording features Corea exclusively utilizing the electric piano to produce a quietly joyful sound. The title track starts quietly with soft e. piano cadences, joined by Airto Moreira's innovative percussion. Flora Purim, at the peak of her vocal abilities, insinuates herself into the mix, using her elegant voice as an instrument, segueing into a Joe Farrell flute solo. The song diminishes and slows back to a Corea solo, then speeds into an effective blend of keyboard chords and Stanley Clarke's melodic driving bass.
"Crystal Silence" features Farrell's delicate soprano sax. "What Game Shall We Play" features words by Corea's longtime lyricist Neville Potter, which are brightly sung by Purim with a decidedly upbeat Latin edge. "Sometime Ago-LaFiesta" spotlights each member of this extremely gifted band as they start out in a wistful ballad moving into a musical rendering of a Spanish Festival. Recorded in February, 1972 for ECM records, "Return to Forever" was produced by Manfred Eicher

5 out of 5 stars Give It Up For The Fender Rhodes.......2006-05-20

The praise other reviewers have given this recording speak for me, but I must add that no one understands how to get the most out of the Fender Rhodes piano than Chick Corea. Hancock and Zawinul came close, but only Chick can coax this much beauty from this great musical instrument.

4 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-03-08

This album may not be for everyone, but it is a great album. The best song on it is "La Fiesta." The synthesized sounds may take a little getting used to, but the music is genuine and creative. Corea blurs the line between improviser and composer. The side men/women really compliment Corea's ideas in a very coherent way. Joe Farrell is a joy to listen to on sax and flute. If you like this album, you may also like RTF's "light as a feather," as well as "the leprechan," "my spanish heart," and "the mad hatter," by Corea.

Album Description

This adventurous yet lyrical trio LP was Chick Corea's career breakthrough album, establishing him as a significant pianist and composer. Over three days in March 1968, Corea recorded with Miroslav Vitous and Haynes (they have since reunited many times over past 34 years) and produced a total of 13 great performances only five of which were used on the original albums. The material ranged from soon-to-be Corea classics like "Matrix" and "Windows" to extended improvised pieces like the title tune to creative interpretations of Monk's "Pannonica" and "My One And Only Love".

Newly remixed and remastered in 24-bit, this milestone session is complete on this CD and sounds better than ever.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-01-15

Ron McMaster did a wonderful remaster job on this 1968 album for Blue Note Records, treating it to a 24-bit resolution transfer and providing a sound quality that is unrivaled by previous releases. If you enjoy great improvised jazz piano in a trio format, you'll be sure to welcome this one as a new addition to your jazz library. With Corea on this occasion are two excellent lifelong sidemen of his, Miroslav Vitous on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.

While Corea was not unknown to the world of jazz in 1968, this album did bring him more notoriety and showcased him as a somewhat radical pianist. This album likely played no small role in Miles Davis having brought Corea onboard later that same year to join his quintet. Many of the pieces on this album may seem too abstract for some, perhaps appearing too loose or unstructured. If you do come to such a conclusion, you will at least come to appreciate "Matrix" (now a standard) for its cohesiveness.

Personally, I enjoy immensely the free interaction between each artist on this album. The original release of "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" had five tracks, but this wonderful reissue has 8 bonus tracks making this purchase an obvious win. Outstanding piano improvisation from one of the genre's finest pianists, this album is a must own as much for it's beauty as for its radicalism.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Corea Album.......2007-01-14

I bought this album after listening to an interview with Chick Corea on NPR over the summer last year. In the interview he was asked the quintessential question: "What is your favorite album that you've put out over the years?". His answer was this album.

The album stands up to that testament. The emotion, energy, and talent of Chick and his band is incredible. Every time I listen to this album I hear something new. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars I'm convinced that Lenny Bernstein engaged in chickification.......2005-09-10

From ALEC WILDER: THE COMPLEAT COMPOSER by Marian McPartland: "Interestingly, one of the OCTETS (which were written almost 40 years ago) is called MAMA NEVER DUG THAT SCENE, and in its opening line is very like a piece by Chick Corea--MATRIX. Alec didn't believe me until I played MATRIX for him. Then he was amazed and I think secretly delighted that he had the idea first. Anybody who thinks his music is old-fashioned should compare these 2 pieces."

Here's another thing you should compare: MATRIX and Lenny Bernstein's DU-BING DU-BANG DU-BONG tune from Lenny's MASS. Lenny's DU-BING is an obvious take-off of Mahler's BIMM-BAMM tune. Stylistically, Lenny was imitating The Swingle Sisters. But content-wise, Lenny was imitating MATRIX's head. There's that same ascension followed by a descension. Chick's MATRIX came out in 1968 and Lenny's MASS came out in 1970.

5 out of 5 stars a jazz milestone.......2004-09-26

Roy Haynes, Miroslav Vitous, Chick Corea team here on this amazing cd. One of the best piano trio albums of all times. It is from 68, but it sounds much fresher than this. I guess because most of the tunes are Corea originals, and that the band has a distinctive sound. Corea is inspired and tirelessly inventive. Roy Haynes drives the beat, echoing the piano's rythmic inventions, as if he was an extension of Corea. Well, I cannot single out Roy, as it is the whole band that is symbiotic. This is a classic.

5 out of 5 stars amazing, a must-have for jazz piano students.......2002-07-31

This album was first recommended to me in 1982 by Dan Hearle, perhaps the best jazz piano teacher of all time and author of many books on improvisation and chord voicings and other aspects of jazz piano and jazz playing. I was taking Dan's jazz piano master class at North Texas State University (now called University of North Texas), and he played it for us and urged us to grab up any copies of this important, then out-of-print album that we could find.

Thankfully, the album came out on cd, and now has been freshly remastered. I have the original cd, so I can't comment on the sound quality of the remaster. The sound quality of the original is very good, though.

More importantly, the playing is amazing. At that young age, Chick was already a mature and important player and composer. Most of the tracks on "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" are accessible and enjoyable to any jazz fan, not just students of jazz piano. (In contrast, another Corea jazz trio album from the same era "The Song of Singing" contains more free jazz and is less accessible.)

"Now He Sings" features great playing by Roy Haynes and Miroslav Vitous. This excellent trio had a reunion in the 1980s, to record (at least) two more albums: "Trio Music" and "Trio Music: Live in Europe". Their 1980s sound is more mature, their individual styles are more fully realized, but the 1960s recording "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs" is still a gem that belongs in the collection of jazz pianists and jazz fans alike.

Highly recommended.

Bobby McFerrin's signature falsetto envelops a poignant, wordless melody, embellished by piano flourishes that uncomfortably tow the line between classical decorum and Chick Corea's airy, modal jazz style. Suddenly the music segues into the opening of Mozart's D Minor Concerto. The A Major Concerto (K. 488) is similarly introduced. While the smooth, thick orchestral fabric suggests forces larger than a chamber aggregation, McFerrin clarifies important woodwind details (the elusive bassoon, for instance, in K. 488's slow movement) and infuses the outer movements with controlled brio. By contrast, Corea's Latin-tinged, improvised cadenzas (and overeager embellishments during solos and tuttis) lose their novelty over repeated hearings. Elsewhere, Corea's literal, dutiful phrasing smacks more of a talented student than a daring and vibrant pianist whose impact on jazz is unassailable. --Jed Distler

5 out of 5 stars not just a jazzy version of Mozart.......2006-04-14

While I have been a dedicated listener of jazz for over thirty years, my classical ear is still taking shape. I do not always know all of the composers but I do know what sounds fresh and evocative. That Bobby McFerrin sings little and is instead the musical director of these Mozart interpretations only adds to the respect I have for his professional accomplishments. That Chick Corea deftly plays these sonatas with an obvious jazz influence does not betray some of the finest music ever written. Sample this music first. If you choose to buy it, I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have, even after my one hundredth listening.

5 out of 5 stars What an awesome CD!.......2005-11-10

Mozart with a jazz twist - here and there. Chick does a beautiful job playing Mozart. He definitely makes the music his own, and his jazzy cadenzas are remarkable! Add the McFerrin preludes and you have something quite unique, a beautiful blend of jazz and classical music. Very enjoyable.

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't be more disapointing...........2005-08-21

I wanted McFerrin singing Mozart but I got almost pure Mozart instead. Bobby had to be the main dish not a tiny apetizer. It is classical music CD with negligible traces of Corea's and McFerrin's jazz. Very weird!

5 out of 5 stars The state of art!.......2005-05-03

Corea in formal tuxedo revealed once more his huge talent in both performings, specially in the 23 th Concert.

3 out of 5 stars Good music but..........2006-06-15

This is basically a straight-ahead jazz album, which is a bit of a letdown for a fusion fan - after everything that Chick Corea has done in the past with Return To Forever, one has certain expectations... But I guess Chick needed a break from fusion at that time. This a good album nonetheless, very playful and quirky, which is typical of Chick Corea. Most tracks are rather unremarkable though, and that's why I am giving it only three stars - with the exception of the smoking "Sicily" and the steaming "Samba Song". If you can stomach Eddie Gomez' interminable and annoying bass soloing (bass is NOT intended to be a solo instrument) you will like this album much more than I did.

5 out of 5 stars amazing jazz fusion classical achievement.......2005-12-26

This music has haunted me in a delightfully pleasant way for the last 15 years. This album is one of Chick Corea's greatest achievements - its an electric album that has all the greatest qualities of acoustic music - its a fusion album that has all the greatness of classical jazz - its a jazz album that sounds like world music - its great music that sounds so personal! Corea's collaborators are at their best - I've never quite heard bass solo's like Eddie Gomez; neither the flute improvisations of Farell. Steve Gadd is at his best in this free flowing setting. There is something about the leadership qualities of Corea that makes people play like this. The interplay with the band is equal and magical with Chick being the lead genius among the geniuses. The amazing unexpected bonus are the children's songs. An album you must have.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Never Gets Old.......2003-12-09

This CD is by far my favorite Chick Corea recording. When I first heard this in 1978 I immediatly fell in love with it. I have worn out several albums over the last 20+ years and couldn't wait until it was available on CD. The interplay between Chick and this band is flawless. They mix very well together and it's a shame they didn't do a follow up recording together. My favorites are The One Step and Friends. If you buy only 1 Chick Corea in your life this one should be it.

I agree with (...) above on most things. What I disagree with, is that I thought the smurfs were cute and innovative. Track one (The one step) is supposed to be a mellow low energy song, but Chick picks up the tempo in the middle and then brings it back down. The "Samba Song" has very excelllent solos by Corea and Joe Farrel (deceased). I have been waitng for this album to arrive on CD since it came out. Another great CD from the same period is the Griffith Park Collections, featuring Chick with Freddie Hubbard and other greats.

Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton have a way of bringing out the best in one another. Native Sense, released in 1997, is in many ways the true sequel to their groundbreaking 1972 collaboration, Crystal Silence. Corea wrote several originals for the album, most of which share a Latin flavor. There are also a pair of improvisations on Bela Bartok's "Bagatelle" series and a version of Monk's "Four in One." The sound of the acoustic piano blends with the vibraphone and marimba to create a shimmeringly beautiful effect from which the music pours forth with unforced virtuosity. --Rick Mitchell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nothing short of great!.......2000-08-12

It's about time someone brought out the final star for this excellent album by the duet veterans.

This is an example of a duet where the two parts have developed into a higher unity. The sensitivity and interplay of Corea and Burton as a team, the incredible time, the great compositions and arrangements, the highest high level of their musical craft, everything amazes this listener.

The music draws on a wide musical heritage without ever falling into one style. Most prominent are the influences of European art music and, of course, jazz. There is also plenty of latin flavor in this recording, plenty of rhythm. Corea and Burton are such masters of polyrhythmic playing, cruising in and out of subdivisions, making the music flow in the manner of a wave, constantly moving, but ever organically.

It is an album deserving serious listening, but it's also perfect for those late Sunday mornings. It's great as a real time out; listening the album through leaves you with energy and positivity - it's guaranteed to evoke smiles.

The production and sound quality is also exceptional, making this an album truly worthy its five stars.

4 out of 5 stars A good sense of each other.......2000-02-25

Chick Corea and vibrist Gary Burton's musical relationship spans three decades, and the fruits of that relationship manifests itself every so often in the form of a duet album and other collaborations. Incidentally, the two just won a Grammy last night (as of this writing) for the record they did with Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes and Dave Holland.

"Native Sense", recorded and released just a couple of years earlier, is another welcome treat for fans of both musicians. It's not so much how they play as individuals here, but how well they play as one. The combined, sweet sound Corea and Burton concoct is greater than the two parts. A nice mixture of Corea originals, little Bartok Bagatelles and even a little Monk thrown in, the dynamic duo explore, converse, and undertake challanges in a variety of settings. "No Mystery" and "Armando's Rhumba" are fine examples of what a couple of master musicians can do when both grace and fire are called for.

Can you find better efforts by either men? Of course. But a reunion of sorts between two old masters just playing together for the pure enjoyment of playing together still makes for a fine recording.

Having the fortune of seeing them perform live a year ago, I can attest that these gentleman still have a lot of chemistry between them. To witness a piano/vibraphone duet of this nature is to know how difficult it must be to pull off. This record (and the Origin CD's that closely followed) provides evidence that Chick is still near the top of his game.

3 out of 5 stars What too much work can do to a man...!.......2000-02-13

"If you cannot say something good about a thing, don't say anything"... but, I can't resist to make some criticism on this Corea's album. What made Chick Corea so popular, (As other great musicians was a good sense of melody, passion, and a magic touch at the instrument. Neither one of these has a big part on this CD. Corea is becoming too much technical, and less musical, this syndrome began some years ago. Even on "Expressions" has too much of Bartok, and less of the man who did "Mad Hatter", or "Three Quartets". It's the less inspired album from Chick. If you compare it with "Crystal Silence", or "Duet" , or "In Zurich, 1979", which have the same formation, you have the impression that Chick was not on an ispired day when he recorded this album. Perhaps he was sick!, perhaps he hadn't slept for a week or so...If we hear the above mentioned good albuns we not only see that after all these years without playing together, the two guys not only didn't learned something NEW, as they're worst than ever. When I hear it, I have the impression that Corea was hired from the airport directly to the studio, where he met Gary Burton, coming from a tired tournee, and on a few minutes they recorded it. The best pieces are on the final, it seems that when things began to improve the CD was over... The sound of the Yamaha piano is very bad, as most Corea's albuns recorded on Yamaha pianos. Chick Corea definetelly was made to play a good, brilliant SteinWay piano, like we hear on "IN ZURICH, 1979", this Yamaha has an strange timbre, but there's some "better than nothing" tunes on this CD. Corea's Chords and ideas are vicious, it seems that he tried a lot to do something new, but he didn't accomplished on this album. If you want to hear a Corea's inspired album, listen to "PLAY" with Bobby Mcferrin.

Just as some books need to be edited for length, so do some albums inspired by works of literature. At least that's the case with The Ultimate Adventure, Chick Corea's second straight album project derived from a novel by his late Scientology mentor L. Ron Hubbard. Dubbed a tone poem by Corea, the nearly 75-minute work has some of his airiest, most cooly fluent music in some time. With its distinctive electric piano punctuation and contributions by flutist Hubert Laws and RTF percussionist Airto Moreira, the lyrical passages have echoes of his much-loved band of the seventies, Return to Forever. And the Spanish tinge for which he is known gravitates winningly south to Arabic North Africa. Ultimately, though, not all of the album's chapters are equally lively: the "Adventure" goes on a bit much for those who aren't using it as a soundtrack to the plot about a boy on a self-actualization quest, and even for some who are. But Corea has never negotiated the acoustic-electric (or, in his parlance, akoustic/elektric) divide as well as he does here and his ability to command a large cast including saxophonist Tim Garland and guitarist Frank Gambale is impressive. --Lloyd Sachs

From the Artist

Inspiration
After the fulfilling experience of writing and recording my last CD, To the Stars, inspired by a classic science fiction novel from my favorite author, L. Ron Hubbard, I began looking for another one of his stories--one that I could portray using my love for Spanish and African music and the talents of the musicians in my new band, Touchstone. Browsing through my collection, I was drawn to the title The Ultimate Adventure. Remembering that this unique fantasy story had a backdrop of scenes and characters from the ancient tales, The Arabian Nights, it immediately had me conjuring emotions, sounds, rhythms and music. Technically, I decided that my palette would be lots of rhythm, flute and, of course, keyboards. I also took this project as an opportunity to make music with some of my old friends who were so important to my music-making in the '60s and '70s--namely, Steve Gadd, Airto Moreira and Hubert Laws. And together with my more recent musical partnerships with Vinnie Colaiuta, Hossam Ramzy, Frank Gambale and Tim Garland, and finally the members of my current band, Tom Brechtlein, Jorge Pardo, Rubem Dantas and Carles Benavent--I was definitely inspired by these great artists in the creation of this music.

Tone Poem
As defined in my computer's dictionary: a "tone poem" is "an extended piece of music that is based on a literary, artistic, or ideological theme, for example, a folk tale or landscape." This has become my favorite form of musical expression.

As were The Leprechaun, The Mad Hatter, My Spanish Heart, Musicmagic, Secret Agent, The Romantic Warrior, Time Warp, To the Stars, and many other albums I've made, The Ultimate Adventure is a tone poem based on the characters, places and events in the story.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Adventure.......2007-03-14

I guess you either love or hate this recording. I've been listening to lot's of "fusion" since I was about 20. My entry into this marvelous world was through RTF's "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy". A kid from West Virginia suddenly realized the world was a lot more interesting than he had believed. I left good ole' WV a few years later and one of the reasons was Jazz. Just one, but an important one. Without boring anyone let me just say it helped reaffirm my courage. Now as far as the "Ultimate Adventure" is concerned. It's a frikin' awesome recording! It is the first Chick Corea music that I have really, really liked in about 20 years. This one is absolutely worth buying. Those that say they liked other Corea stuff but not this CD are either not real fans or haven't listened. If you like Chick buy this CD. Someone from WV who openly admits liking Jazz would not lie.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2007-02-04

This is the Chick Corea we long-time fans know and love. But this time it's more about his brilliant compositions and expert performance with a great group than the freewheeling improv we have heard at times. It is richly textured jazz with liberal sprinklings of world music and some classical influences. I'm not familiar with the story this music is based on, but listening to it is an adventure I'm happy to experience in my own imagination.

2 out of 5 stars Lame . . . what you wouldn't expect from Mr. Corea.......2006-12-17

My sympathies to Chick and his family. Evidently Chick was involved in some sort of accident that left him musically incapacitated. As the owner of at least 13 Chick Corea CDs, this one is at the bottom of the list (actually, on the trade off list). Boring & musically uneventful. After reading the reviews I thought "I must get this CD ("Inside Out" was the last one I bought). I was hesitant and I should've gone with my instincts (it stinks). Forget that the music is uninspiring and the melodies forgetful, there's not even enough technical acrobatics to amaze if even for a moment. I suggest giving this one a miss until Chick recovers.

2 out of 5 stars Like a beautiful cake that has no flavor---one taste is enough.......2006-12-07

I like my music with more substance than detail. On "The Ultimate Adventure," Mr. Corea lavishes the music with layers of detail delivered by a galaxy of talented musicians. The songs are glittering, polished, fluid, and slick.

But despite the glitzy trappings, the final product lacks substance and is neither engaging nor inspiring. (Haven't we all heard this conflation before and put to better use than spinning aural yarns tied to a pseudo-fantasy novel?) Put another way, this recording is like a beautiful cake that has no flavor---one taste is enough.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent . . . what you expect from Mr. Corea.......2006-09-01

If your reading this it's a must buy.... only interested in fusion avant jazz (hardly any radio play . . lol . . ) type of improvisational (but perfectly executed) musician-ship.
This one is not a miss ! Get it!

Vibist Gary Burton has been collaborating with pianist Chick Corea and guitarist Pat Metheny since the mid-'70s, and it shows. The three have a strong intuitive sense of each other's lines and sound and can enhance the music in myriad, subtle ways. Having a great rhythm section doesn't hurt either, and bassist Dave Holland and drummer Roy Haynes are two of the very best. On Like Minds they have created an excellent CD: a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination. With the exception of the George Gershwin piece, "Soon," the disc features all original compositions, with considerable thought given to distinguishing each soloist despite the surface similarity of their nimble, bouncy styles. Like minds, perhaps, but each possesses a singular voice and the ability to merge it creatively with others. --Wally Shoup

This is a great collection of really excellent Jazz. Gary Burton is on his game.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collaboration.......2006-10-30

What a lineup of musicians. This album grabs you solo after solo and doesn't let up till the end. Reccomended to fans of fun, improv-friendly jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Beauty.......2006-06-10

This is definitely a worthy CD to purchase. Granted, this is not really a 'working' band, but rather 5 of the greatest living players on their respective instruments coming together to play. Therefore, I can understand some of the reviewers saying this is a jam session. It is. But Holy Cow can these guys play! Unlike most all-star line-ups that happen in the jazz industry, where the listener can tell that there is no rapport, this session sounds so fresh to my ears, and the general vibe is that all of the players are having FUN and really enjoying each other. It's like every player is having a field day with each solo, and everyone is totally grooving on each other.

I can't think of too many other recent CD's that have given me that feeling.

This one is really special.

4 out of 5 stars Like Minds, Great Talent !!!!.......2006-03-22

There is a lot of talent on this CD and while it's not cutting edge, it is very enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Classic of the Titans.......2006-01-27

Wow! What superlatives can you muster to adequately describe a collaboration of these five jazz giants? I'll spare you the hyperbole and just say that this is a mandatory acquisition for any semi-serious modern jazz fan. No if's, and's or but's. Burton, Metheny, and Corea all contribute new compositions as well as some of their own standards. The inclusion of Metheny's Question and Answer is reason enough buy this CD on the spot.

Although my rating says 5 stars, it is actually 4 3/4 stars because of a couple niggles I do feel like mentioning. Over the years I have not developed as much of an affinity for Corea's music as I have Burton's or Metheny's because he seems to treat the piano as a percussive instrument as much as he does a tonal instrument - which is not necessarily a good thing as far as my listening pleasure is concerned. His style is fraught with rapid fire, staccato arpeggiation and chromatic phrasing that often requires more effort to assimilate than I'd like to exert. And this album is no exception.

This issue is then exacerbated by the fact that the guy who was responsible for the mixing, James Farber, managed to produce the worst piano sound I have ever heard on a recording. Chick's sound is so compressed, flat, and lifeless here that it seems like Farber was intentionally trying to fabricate what a piano would sound like under water. It's mind boggling. Again, maybe this was intentional for some artistic reason that is way over my head but it is totally lost on my meager musical sensibilities.

Even with this notable flaw, though, the rest of the body of work here is so overwhelming that it gets swept away into the greatness of what is sure to become a modern day classic by these five jazz "titans". For those reviewers who don't care for the "jam session format" on display here, welcome to jazz. Buy it right now.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorite jazz albums.......2007-02-22

Other reviewers have put it better than I could. This is a very unique album, with stunning compositions. I am a drummer and a big fan of Steve Gadd, and I have to say his solo on this album, and his intro to one of the quartets are my all-time favorite Gadd performances, both sensitive and technically daunting. The compositions by Chick Corea are very inspired, each of them lingers in your ear long after you've stopped listening.
It is a truly inspiring album.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless!.......2007-01-05

Good albums come and go, but Chick Corea's Three Quartets is timeless! Compositions with immense depth and soul! From Chick's opening riff of the first track to the last seconds of the last song, three quartets takes you on an amazing journey. First of all, the line-up: Chick Corea, Eddie Gomez, Steve Gadd, Michael Brecker; can it get any bigger? Each of these jazz giants get there space to explode.
A must for jazz fans of all eras. Chick, your the man dude!

5 out of 5 stars rare musical treasure.......2005-09-30

I cannot really express in words what this music means to me. This album is a very rare musical treasure, and has been like the voice of god for me 23 years or so, since I first purchased it on vinyl. There is no one in my personal life with whom I can share my love for this music; so I was happy recently seeing some well-written reviews from members of "my family" that I have never met. I always knew there were others out there who knew about the brilliance of "Three Quartets".

I agree with others (including Chick - see his note in booklet) that the extras don't really belong on this album. The majesty, pathos, bliss, and orgasmic shakti of the three main pieces put them in a class by themselves. They are serious and sacred compositions, and these recordings represent a historical convergence of talent and inspiration.

As a college student in the early 80's, I was so rocked by this comet that blew through my solar system, that I wrote Chick a letter of heartfelt thanks -- and HE WROTE ME BACK. I attached that letter to the cover my Three Quartets LP, and there it remains today. The man has great heart, and his musical imagination calls to us from a most remarkable realm. Some of us recognize the same in ourselves, and journey a short while with him.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating .......2005-09-25

Buy this cd, if not for the songs, for his compositions because they are fascinating and wild. Who ever would of thought of these chords and melodies? Songs are abstract, yet somehow they are melodically synchronized and flow with the complex rhythms. I dont think anyone in a million years could think up of the stuff that chick corea comes up with. Very nice acoustic feel as well. i love acoustic bands because it is very natural, no digitalized things.

5 out of 5 stars it's just doesn't get any better... .......2005-09-06

There just aren't enough stars for this one!

This was one of the first jazz albums I ever got, and very few have ever matched this one for intensity, interplay, empathy and overall collaborative effort. The acoustic music Corea and company make here is nothing short of breathtaking.

Corea composed the music specifcally for these musicians, and it suits them perfectly. At the time, Brecker was playing with Gadd and Gomez in Steps. I'm sure that Brecker was tight musically with Gomez and Gadd, and then Corea puts it all together.

Corea is an such a gifted musician to begin with. Here he assembles a group here which consists of players who were at the top of their game. While these types of projects often result in loose blowing sessions, here the emphasis is on collaboration. Corea's compositions are terrific, and extremely well played.

I remember being dissapointed a while back, when Three Quartets was out of print on LP, and not released on CD yet. Our patience was rewarded when the CD was finally released with bonus tracks added. While the tracks aren't as cosmic as the performances from the original lp, they are a lot of fun.

Fans of Brecker probably have this one already. His playing is so sensative at times, and when it's time to burn his playing is incindiary. Gomez is terrific (understatement!) as always, and Gadd plays his heart out. Corea created a masterpiece with Three Quartets. Every facet of the production is carried out with tender loving care. The sound of this one is terrific, as is the overall album conception.

5 out of 5 stars a colllection of immensely creative piano works.......2003-06-07

Funny how this recording grows on you over time. I have heard this often over the years and now for the last month have been listening to it almost daily. I feel (as another reviewer did) that in a hundred years, this may turn out to be one of the the best classical works of the late 20th century, even if it appears to be jazz-threaded. Its as good an 'existential' expression of the times as were the Chopin nocturnes, or the piano version of the Ravel Mother Goose Suite, or the Eric Satie solo piano classics. If you are moved by those pieces, you will indeed like these. These works by Chick are pensive, profound, lyrical. And after 19 piano solos comes the Addendum for Violin, Cello and Piano which is a terrific classically modelled trio.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2000-08-27

Everytime I hear this disc I am reminded how amazing the human species is. Just when it seems we have defeated the mountain someone goes higher. Chick is one of the finest composers of our time ! I believe in say, One hundred years they will look back on the music from our era and Chick Corea will be held as one of the greats. From his awe inspiring "Return to Forever" project to "Concerto" Chick has hit all of the intellectual high ground while all the time maintaining plenty of emotion and feeling, Not to mention Technique! CHILDRENS SONGS is a beautiful collection of short musical stories...the title would imply a simple structure but nothing could be farther from the truth. These compositions bristle with fresh and almost child like energy and emotion (hence the title I would imagine)and as always leave the listner touched and wanting more...BUY IT !

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted songs and piano voicings.......1999-09-20

Give it all the stars !! Like Gershwin preludes or Chopin nocturnes, Corea's songs are deceptive in their simplicity. I hear something new in each hearing. Having listened to some of these songs first with Corea's duets with vibes player Gary Burton (dense in texture but equally wonderful), I think that the solo piano versions bare the "bones" of these lovely compostions. Certainly will find a place in Jazz/20th Century classical repertoire. I wonder how lovely these songs would sound if arranged for two classical guitars. (has it been done?)

4 out of 5 stars haunting, dramatic, great solo piano works.......1999-06-22

Amazing how much 1 piano can fill a space. 20 tracks and all but one feature one of the best jazz pianists of the late 20th century; sweet, innocent yet with a subtle melencholy. Frantic, frenetic but with a weariness that keeps it all in a mildly minor key.
