This is a must-buy! If you've ever had a chance to see Gary Jules at the Hotel Cafe in LA, you know how incredible this guy is. 'St. Christopher's Lullaby' is an essential anthem for anyone in love. 'Ghosts' will leave you positively shaken!

Relaxed and flowing.......2003-04-01

Gary Jules puts together a tremendous CD that combines his instrumental knowledge with his voice. The result is a flowing, relaxed sound that puts you at ease. If you've listened to "Mad World" from the Donnie Darko soundtrack you know what an amazing talent this man is. Do yourself a favor and pick this CD up.

Powerful folk rock and stunning vocals.......2002-11-16

Gary Jules is one of LA's best local artists, and one of my favorite artists of all time. He manages to say a lot with very little, and I've not heard him sing a single song that I haven't liked. This is a great debut, with a good variety of sounds; some of my absolute favorite tunes on this album are "Owen Down", "Push", and "Heroes and Heroin". I also very strongly recommend Gary's most recent album, "Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets", which includes the tune most folks are probably familiar with, the cover of "Mad World" from Donnie Darko. ...

think mellow del amitri... purely musical and lyrical...the perfect romantic date as long as your idea of (or being) the the perfect date is showing up with flowers in one hand and a bottle of wild turkey in the other, barefoot...something interesting and contagiously listenable about this album. you must have it.

A Good Album, but DON'T BOTHER!!.......2003-09-24

Debut is a great album, and the extra tracks are nice, but buying them on singles can be cheaper if you check for good prices.

WELL WORTH THE IMPORT PRICE.......2001-10-05

First of all, the Japanese import is listed as having one bonus track --- but, there are actually TWO! The last two songs, "Atlantic" and "Play Dead" are the bonus material. I know that the track "Play Dead" was also released as an import single; however, I don't think there ever was an official release for "Atlantic" (I could be wrong), so it might be worth the price just for that bonus track alone. If you don't already have DEBUT and you're a Bjork fan, you should definitely pick this version up. Even diehard fans who already own the domestic version of DEBUT (like myself) might want to invest in this beautiful piece of Bjork history.

This album is quirky and upbeat for bjork. Though her musical compositions have grown with the years, we should not forget about this 1st album. I purchased it recently because I lost it, thus proving its necessity within my cd collection!

Björk's First Album in English.......2007-07-13

Björk is from Iceland, and before this album she made songs in her own language. Now, this "Debut" is sung in English. Her first big hit "Human Behaviour" is an excellent song, and defintely the best song in this album. It tells how strange is man's behaviour and logic. "Crying" is a good song too - quite an aggressive for Björk. "Venus as a Boy" is also quite a strange song - but Björk is not as usual as others - she walks her own way. "There's More to Life Than This" is not a good song - it is too odd. "Like Someone in Love" is a peaceful love song. "Big Time Sensuality" is one of her biggest hits - a good electro pop song. "One Day", "Aeroplane", and "Come to Me" are all basic Björk - quite OK songs. "Violently Happy" is one of my favourite Björk songs - it was quite a big hit. "The Anchor Song" is also very strange song. "Play Dead" is awesome - a good closing for this album, one of her strongest songs.

Great artists who were exploding in the early 90's (a friggin' awesome time period) whose names start with the letter B. Beck. Beastie Boys. The Breeders. Butthole Surfers. And Bjork.
Spritely Icelandic beautifully honest human and REAL. Not weighted down with all the disgusting societal horse hockey that is becoming more and more prevelent in the U.S. as of late. Bjork is Britney Spears' antithesis.

Jetto Blaster.......2006-12-19

UNIQUE,INNOVATIVE, ONE OF A KIND.

I am amazed to see such interest in Bjork and so many positive reviews. I really like much of the stuff she does. But, she is so unique and different, I would have expect her to put off more people and for some to actually hate her.

Although called Debut, this is actually her third solo album, but her first solo CD to get worldwide distribution. She had an album out when she was 11 years old and a dance album three years earlier, but those did not get much attention outside of Iceland.

This was released in 1993, after the breakup of the Sugar Cubes. It is 48 minutes long and the sound quality is good.

On this CD, she still sounds much like she did with the Sugar Cubes, but has evolved the sound more into the dance/electronica music of the time. She still has an avant garde sound, but it is a little more accessible to those who were hitting the dance clubs at the time.

She is still working on her English, giving her vocals a that eerie feel to them. At one point she sings "jetto blaster" for ghetto blaster.

The thing about Bjork is that a little can go a long way. At 48 minutes, this CD is too long. Much of it begins to sound the same and it becomes tedious. Some of the songs sound like minor variations on earlier songs. And like the Sugar Cubes, the music and vocals can be a little harsh. That along with the challenge of her voice, this all can make it difficult to listen to the whole CD in one shot.

Very Impressive Debut!.......2006-11-17

1. Human Behaviour - Björk's first solo hit in America, has a funky sound that Björk could only explain.

2. Crying - Very fun to dance too, because it has a pretty fast sound to it.

3. Venus As A Boy - Another hit song that I can't really explain, however I will say it's very addicting.

4. There's More To Life Than This - It's suppose to be live, but I think it's not, even though you here people talking & laughing. I really don't like this one like the first four songs. It has a dance sound to it, but it just can't be saved.

5. Like Someone In Love - It's boring with just a harp, so I skip this one, but you might think different.

6. Big Time Senusality - After two o.k. songs, the album gets back with a great dance song that will have you out of breathe and it was a hit!.

7. One Day - this song remains me of that song "Bedtime Stories" which Björk did for Madonna, P.S. this song is way better then "Bedtime Stories". I love the beat to this, also I love the opening with the baby giggling.

8. Aeroplane - I have mixed emotions for "Aeroplane". The song has a jungle sound with some jazz parts in it.

9. Come To Me - Great song, very unique. It's kind of slow, but still very danceable and catchy too.

10. Violently Happy - Another Björk hit that is very good, a little fast and fun to dance to.

11. Anchor Song - The worst on this album, right after "Someone Like You", skip it.

12. Play Dead - I have the bonus track version with this song on it, it's really good but alittle of a misfit on this album. Originally I read that it was on a soundtrack, maybe that's why it doesn't really go great with the other songs on here.

Well that's my review for Björk's first solo English album. I put my opinions with the type of music it is behind the song titles. Hope that this review was helpful to anyone just getting into Björk.
