Customer Reviews:
Fun music, skilled musicians.......2004-05-19
As another reviewer said, this probably is "tourist music," but it's very fun & seems to be mostly authentic Greek folk music, on appropriate instruments. (Except for the last track, where they suddenly bring in a disco beat -- hello??) I only wish these guys wouldn't try to sing -- none of them really has a good voice, though they can carry a tune just fine. To me, it sounds as if the bazouki players are doing double-duty, but I think they should have hired some real singers! Anyhow, all that said, this is a real toe-tapping, fun album & the instrumental playing is great. Several of the tracks are live, and it's overall very worth the money.
Good Vocals & Bouzouki Music.......2002-04-11
This CD is definitely good quality Greek music played at restaurants and cafes, what is termed urban popular Greek music, i.e., "just what the tourist asked for". It is not as fiery and passionate as I prefer but excellent singing and playing: yes. If you want to dance a kalamatianos, tsamikos, or zeibekiko: no, can't be done. If you want traditional music with village instruments: look elsewhere, in addition to the bouzouki there are steel guitars, occasional drums and keyboards. No "island music" here. However, many songs are original, written and composed by one of the Athenians who prove to be a very talented group, indeed. I found "M'ena tsigaro" and "The Best of Tsitsanis" very engaging, the first is an original, written by one of the vocalists, the other is the only "rembetika" that I recognize on the CD. Overall, good music for the price. If you're looking for the raw, earthy sound of true "rembetika" --- try the Rounder CD like "Rembetica: Greek Urban Music" or the Markos Vamvakaris from 1930s -1940s, both remakes of original 78 records by the artists themselves. Even 1 star is too good for this disc.......2006-02-19
I bought this CD hoping for something that came a little closer to Greek music than this garbage. Since when did rural Greek musicians trade their Bazoukis, violins, and other 'real' instruments for a synthesizer? DO NOT BUY THIS CD IF YOU LIKE MUSIC. IF YOU HATE MUSIC AND LIKE HEADACHES THEN THIS IS THE ALBUM FOR YOU!
Authentic.......2005-03-14
The music on this album sounds really authentic. It has an excellent Greek feel to it that doesn't sound overly produced or influenced in a "pop"-ish way. Recommended.
Authentic "pikilia".......2000-07-30
This CD is a great sampling of authentic greek folk songs from all regions of greece: mountain to island!

Customer Reviews:
an outstanding introduction to rebetika artists.......2003-06-01
This is an excellent compilation of famous older artists of rembetica. The info pamphlet with the cd is the best I've ever seen. It makes a wonderful introduction to this music style. This recording has led me to get some albums of some of these artists: Dalgas and Papagika in particular.
Music of my heritage........2000-03-16
Do your roots reach back to Asia Minor? Did you hear the stories from your grandparents about their flight from the old country? Yes? Then you're primed for this outstanding CD! The loving passion of these artists will allow you to experience the emotions your grandparents felt when they listened, and sang, to these folk classics. And I mean passion!
A fantastic recording of Greek Music of Asia Minor.......1998-09-09
Put simply, this is a fantastic recording. It is a fine recording of urban music of the Greek communities of Anatolia (present day Turkey) which were wiped out earlier in this century. It spans the years 1927-1932 and features the pre-eminent instrumentalists and vocalists of the era. It features artists whose music continues to influence Greek and Turkish music to this day. Not surprisingly, many of the numbers are laments for a lost love, a lost way of life or a lost homeland; however, many of the numbers are upbeat and relect the vibrancy of this lost community. A few of the songs feature Antonios Diamandithes, nicknamed "Dalgas" (Turkish, for wave) for the extraordinary ululations of his voice. He has rightly been called one of the greatest vocalists of the 20th century, and the proof is on this record. His "Ponos Tis Xenitia" is a song of the searing pain of exile. It is among the most moving, evocative songs ever recorded. I grew up listening to this type of music and this record is like a gift from heaven. Contrary to another review listed here which states that the instruments are all "Turkish" and that the music loses all it's Greek elements, nothing could be farther from the truth. These instruments can more accurately be called Anatolian or even Middle Eastern, no country or people can claim their origins, moreover, most of the virtuosoes of these instruments were Christian Greeks or Armenians. Also this "Smyrnaic" music (from the Greek city Smyrna on the coast of present day Turkey) forms the foundation of much of modern Greek music. The analogy has frequently been made that this music is to Greek and Turkish contemporary music what the blues is to American music. The allusion is very accurate in more ways than one. I would highly recommend this recording to anyone who has an interest in Greek, Turkish, Middle Eastern, Klezmer or world music in general. It is a paradigm of the genre, and no aficiando's library is complete without it.

Komitas, The Great Armenian Composer (1869 - 1935).......2003-09-03
Tucked in a collection of music by European composers finally a major classical record label CHANDOS releases music by Komitas and in what fashion! You can argue how accurately the title of the album "Dances from the Heart of Europe" applies to this music nevertheless Komitas's Armenian folk dances/songs arranged for chamber orchestra and recorded here will be a delight to the listeners familiar to the music and will become an instant love affair to those not so familiar with them. You will cherish this one-of-a- kind album for years to come.

Songs of tough men and wily women living outside of the law: dope smoking, gambling, bragging and boasting, and making it through jail time are the subjects of lyrics put to music on this CD. No, it's not gangster rap, it's not even The Threepenny Opera, this is mourmourika music, the dark underbelly of the Greek rembetica form. These rare recordings from the '30s through the '50s feature passionate vocals over a variety of string backing--bouzouki, guitar, baglama, kanoun, and the occasional violin. The surface hiss of some of these 78 rpm originals does not dim the vitality of the singers and players, and most of the tunes here are marvelously restored. The profusely annotated booklet gives insights into the social context of this music, while song translations point out timeless human themes of sorrow and survival, desperation, and celebration. --Jeff Grubb
Customer Reviews:
wonderful.......2007-07-16
This is an extremely unique complilation of soem VERY rare pieces in incredibly clean condition. For a beginner, this may seem daunting but some of these cuts will never be reissued again. For the advanced student, this is an opportunity to hear pieces you have only dreamed about. To the expert, congratulations once again are due to Rounder records for some incredibly rare pieces and very interesting liner notes.
BAD RECORD.......2002-09-10
It's the first time I gonad write something like this... It's to bad to be true...
The real rembetica!.......2001-10-14
When one travels in Greece it is very hard to find true Rembetica music. When asked where this style of music is to be found, most Greeks will send you to the nearest taverna to hear the loud, raucous, popular music that is now called rembetica by so many. For the afficianado who wishes to hear the real thing, this CD is the perfect fix. It is the best of the real rembetica singers of the 1930s to 1950 and will give the listener a true felling for the music of those times in the Greek tavernas. Acoustic, simple, clear, and totally authentic - pure Greek gold!
N. Pourpourakis.......2000-12-17
I met Nick Pourpourakis, the composer of the last song on this CD, "The Sultan", 15 years ago. In his heyday he was one of the most talented and most popular of Greek Musicians here in the United States. His speciality is "Rembetiko" style music which is the theme of this CD. He is still active and performs in a local restaurant in Sherman Oaks, California and was recently on television. He composed "The Sultan" in New York in the 50's in his late teens and he has actually worked with some of the musicians who are featured on the album (who of course were quite a bit older). "The Sultan" was also chosen as background music for an episode of a very popular Soap Opera in Greece "Lampsi." This CD "MOURMOURIKA" is an excellent collection of a style of music that was in a world of its own, back in the 1900's to about the late 1950's. I recommend it highly, especially to music historians. Here's to you Nick.
Well chosen collection of rare tracks.......1999-03-23
This CD contains a good selection of rare tracks by well known and rather more obscure singers of the rebetiko idiom. The sound quality is very good considering the age of some of the recordings. If you know rebetika already, this CD will increase your knowledge, if you are new to the music, it provides a good introduction. All in all a must have.

Greece my love!.......2007-01-14
What can I say? All these are or have been famous in Greece at one time or another. They are all inspired by that old musical art of Rembetico, the Greek blues.
I have been to Greece so many times, never as a tourist, and the Greek heart speaks to mine... There is a yearning in the bousoukia that grabs you by the plexus solaris! I want to get up, raise my hands, shout "opa" and dance like Zorbas, or even more so - pack my bag and fly there!

Lacking Lyrics.......2006-07-16
So many people have brought up the mary jane in one of the songs, that I just thought I'd mention -- not all of the songs on this CD even HAVE lyrics. The first two, for example, are instrumentals.
Oh my! Dirty song! Dirty song!.......2004-10-16
They say "marijuana" on here! That's all you need to know! These people are obviously terrorists! They're murderous drug fiends! They want to destroy America! Run! Hide!
Hey but at least the cockroach isn't shaking her fake boobies and thrusting her pierced belly button in your face, eh?
But anyhow, never ever share your marijuana with a baby. They are total bogarts.
Drug name is being mentioned in one of the lyrics.......2004-08-06
The quality of the music is good. However, there are several mistakes in the origin of some songs. For instance, Guantanamera is from Cuba, not from Spain. The Brazilian song (Es Para Ti) is not from Brazil. But the worst thing is the version of that popular Mexican song, 'La Cucaracha'.
The lyrics are saying the following:
La cucaracha, la cucaracha,
ya no puede caminar,
porque le falta, porque no tiene
marihuana pa' fumar.
The English translation for that would be:
The cockroach, the cockroach
can no longer walk
because she doesn't have
marijuana to smoke.
Do you mothers honestly think that this is the kind of vocabulary we'd like our kids to learn, and dance to?
I don't think that's precisely the vocabulary that we'd like young kids and babies to learn. And it's sad that companies are selling products that are not being reviewed before sending them to the market. People that doesn't have the ability of understanding foreign languages cannot understand what's being said in the song. I bought the CD for a friend's of mine's little boy. My friend doesn't speak Spanish, but she was still able to understand that marijuana was being mentioned. As I do speak Spanish as first language, she asked me to confirm her what she thought she understood. I felt very embarrased when I found out that she was right.
It's a shame. I'd not recommend anyone to buy these CD, at least not for kids.
leave la cucaracha out.......2004-06-22
I am a mother of two and an early childhood educator so I listen to a lot of children's music. I gave this CD a rating of four stars because though it has wonderful beats on it and seems to be diverse i feel the company should have left "la Cucaracha" from MEXICO out of this cd or changed the words to be more child appropriate. There is a verse in this song that repeats various times that references smoking marijuana. My children are both bilingual in english/spanish and think "the wiggles" version of this song is funny. I feel as if the song promotes drug use and is not a positive value that i would like to instill in my child or others.
A wonderful CD for your nursery!.......2002-05-06
As a first time parent I want to give my child every advantage I can. Studies have shown that playing music to your child helps to enhance their learning ability.
I saw "Baby's First" cd series and as they were so affordable I decided to go ahead and buy them without hearing them first.
My decision has been rewarded! The cd's are very good, and provide hours of music to stimulate my babies mind.
Buy this CD today, you won't be disappointed, and neither will your youngsters! :)

so good it hurts.......2003-06-19
I agree with erikab93, if you had to choose one, this would be it. Dalgas's Sousta politiki is a favorite. Katsaros's track #15 is another. But my favorite is Amanes Hiotikos by Yangos Psamatianos. That song has the perfect feel of this kind of music. He sings so good it hurts... but it hurts good!
beautiful Greek songs.......2003-06-16
Of all my recent Greek purchases, this is one of the most beautiful. The instrumental elements are especially pleasant. There's a variety of wonderful artists. One of the most interesting is Yanni or Jangos Psamatianos.
listening through a window back in time.......2002-07-24
this fabulous CD is a marvel of the human spirit caught in time and place .A world we can never go to , but we can visit through this window. There is a eerie nostalgic quality to the music which is palpable and strange given that in their time and place these recordings were contemporary .
Stellar Rembitica Artists All on One CD.......2002-04-07
If I had to own one and only one CD of Rembetica music: this one is it!!! Usually there is only one or two instruments accompanying a song/instrumental: either bouzouki alone or with either a kanun, cimbalom, violin, or clarinet, or lyra alone ... then the voice of a famed Rembetica singer starts to sing: to the beat of a "Cafe Aman" melody. The stark contrast of voice and basic instruments creates a very earthy and natural sound.
The liner notes are helpful in listing origin of the song or instrumental, a little history of where it was first played or recorded and something about the life of the artist. Overall, this is the *best* combination of Rembetica music I have yet heard! Erika Borsos (erikab93)
the best compilation.......2000-09-14
this is by far the best compilation I've heard of old rembetika. All the recordings are original, and they represent the whole variety of rembetika written in the 20's and 30's, from amanedes, to hashish songs, to songs about xenitia and suffering. The song Opios Orphanepse micros is my favorite rebetiko.
