In many respects, Lily Pons was the Galli-Curci of her generation: a winning combination of good looks, charm, an appealing and non-confrontational timbre, and easy facility in the stratosphere. Those who learned the "Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor or the "Bell Song" from Lakmé via the original 78s back in the 40s will be bowled over by the vivid detail and lack of background noise in these stunning Sony restorations. First-time listeners will marvel at her effortless passagework and high notes (she often transposed her arias up on records); but may be put off by a slight thinness in the middle register (not evident in her Odeon recordings from the late 20s), sketchy intonation at times, and expedient aspirating in downward scales. Although these selections encompass a gamut of stylistic and emotional contrasts, you'd scarcely know it from the singer's pleasant but characterless interpretations, which tickle the ear without quite racking the brain. --Jed Distler

Highly recommended.......2007-07-09

This could have been recorded yesterday, the sound quality is excellent and without blemish. By far the best recordings of Pons I have, and I would like to have others. She reminds me of Jo, separation of notes, clear, real trills, a range to rival Sumac, flexibility to perfection, and always that today neglected once standard fare of the coloratura, the requisite leap to the top note at the end of an aria. And a pretty sound. I love this album.

Good,Very good,But Not Great.......2006-05-02

Brian McFadden was a key member of the Irish boyband Westlife and in his songs in this,his first album as a solo artist,we catch glimpses of the influence and style of the hugely sucessful group. Brian,as you may recall,actually broke away from the band to spend more time with his wife but within two months of his departure from Westlife, Brian McFadden released his first solo single "Real to Me", one of the few genuinely great songs in this CD.

"Real to Me" is a fantastic single with a melodious music complementing the powerful lyrics. Another track that exhibits the array of talent of this Irishman is "Irish Son"---composed on a patriotic theme that fires up the sense of nationalism, this title-track is a great way to start the CD. "He's No Hero" and " Sorry Love Daddy" invoke a softer kind of music with an air of melancholy about them. Actually I feel that Brian McFadden's voice is suited to such types of songs and not to fast and loud music as in " Lose Lose Situation" and "Pull Myself Away", which in my opinion, sound wan and emotionless. "Demons", "Be True To Your Woman", "Walking Disaster" and " Walking Into Walls" are good songs but somehow fail to capture our heart and eventually passed by leaving an expression of a mere shallow depth of enjoyment. The best song in "Irish Son" in my judgement is "Almost Here", a great duet by two amazing vocalists. Delta Gudrem and Brian McFadden compilment each other exquisitely in this track and as the music moves from a soft to a mid-tempo rhythm and the lyrics become more and more touching, you are invariably led to accept and imbibe the profound emotion and sentimentality of this song.

Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Justin Timberlake all broke away from their respective groups and launched massively successful solo careers. Brian McFadden too has endeavoured to acomplish just that and has produced a mixed bag in his maiden album "Irish Son". But he has got more to do if he wants to be a real heavyweight in the arena of Pop solo artist since as more time elapses, people will tend to associate him less and less with Westlife and then Brian has to create and sustain and individual identity bereft of past glories. Brian McFadden has the talent, the voice and the intensity to establish himself as a great male solo vocalist but for that he would've to pay attentiion to what types of music he creates and the sensibitity of his songs. I feel that his voice doesn't allow him to make all and any kinda of music and the Irishman must stick to this limitation and not try something that goes beyond, not atleast in the next two CDs.

It has been a long time since I have heard a CD of substance. There are so many artists out there today who only sing the praises of using and demeaning woman, and this is not one of them. This is a CD that tells how life really is, and it is down to earth, and just plain good. One of the best cd's I have heard in a long time.

The first CD I have loved in Y ears.......2006-03-03

I was living in the UK when the album was released, a year ago. I Loved the couple of songs I had heard on the radio, and when I moved back to the states, I found myself longing to hear them again. I purchased the CD, and to my surprise, I liked every song on it. I have owned this CD for 7-8 months now, and can honestly say that not a day goes by that I don't listen to it.

I found this CD to be refreshing. It is much better than most of the music released these days, and much better than what is being released in the UK. If you want to hear nothing but remakes the UK is the place to go.

Proves he doesn't need Westlife.......2006-02-08

At first, I'll admit, I was really upset when Brian McFadden decided to leave the band (for more than the reason he had given in the press release). However, I had always anticipated his CD, and when it did come out, I rushed to get it. It was simply amazing.

The straight-forward lyrics and honesty sound so natural when put into those fabulous tunes. He really does have a knack for songwriting, already proven in a few Westlife tracks beforehand.

"Sorry Love Daddy" reduced me to tears when I first heard it without knowing the context. It is plain, honest, filled with guilt for what he had done and leaving his two daughters like he did. "Be True to Your Woman" is an apology in disguise, written to his ex-wife Kerry Kantona. Again, touching, with thoughtful lyrics.

The duet with Delta Goodrem ("Almost Here") is one of the very best duets ever sung in recent music history. It's not fancy, it's not complicated, it's not filled with amazing chords and high notes. It's the opposite: It's simple, sophisticated, and most importantly, so easy to listen to. It's so soothing just to hear their voices. Brian and the producers are extra thoughtful to lower the background music when it's Delta's turn to sing, knowing that her voice is much softer than Brian's. This creates a dramatic contrast between them, suiting how the song develops.

All other songs are very soothing and pleasing, but nothing too special to mention. But I'm sure, if you liked Brian McFadden as a person, as a member of Westlife or his voice, then you won't be disappointed by this.

Just total terrible this CD, disgusted beyond words!.......2005-12-03

I can't get what peeps find so good with this so terrible CD of the Ex Westlifer Brian McFadden. It may appear many lack the musical/emotional sensitivity nowdays, thinking everything is great, how sad. After somebody gave it to me, and one so unbearable listen, I just threw it away, found Brians voice, lyrics, music and all some of the worst heard to date, and to top it off the horrid Duett with Delta Goodrem whom I'm fan of, just total disgusted and saddened me beyond words - This is typical Brian as he did to the poor Atomic Kitten member, not too long ago. All the Rumours regarding Delta & Brian should be treated as empty air, as how insensitive the media is nowdays - No match in Heaven!. And hope that this so totally untalented Ex Westlifer will never put out another Album again, and never sing with the OZ Sweetheart ever again,as she doesnt deserve to be made so dirty by this horrible Brian McFadden with his so dark past, and this so bad CD also shows, noticing his poor songwriting on the sideline just too clearly. A very bad CD of a very bad singer, that should not have been...Very sad!

Cat Stevens fans need this one.......2006-07-17

Because this was Cat Stevens's earliest recordings, his fans need this album to round out the collection. Everyone will recognize early radio hits off the play list. The songs are simple, yet orchestrated. Very 60s baby.

A 'must' for Cat fans.......2006-07-11

I say a 'must' because it was Cat's first album - not easy to find these days -and it is always interesting to compare a performer's earliest work with later hits. It contains a few easily recognisable songs and a lot of others that I personally had not heard before. During the first couple of plays I wasn't too sure, but typical Cat - the more you play it the more it grows on you and I love it! I'm particularly fond of Portobello Road (takes me back to the 60's in West London) and Lady. Matthew and Son and Come on and Dance are the tops.

Varied.......2003-05-08

If you don't have Matthew and Son, I think you daon't have some great songs. Not that the hits are the best. First song Matthew and Son, A very typical sixties pop song with strigns and trumpets. I love my dog is basically him at his acoustic backed up by orchestration. It sounds very sixties and is quite cute. I quite like Here comes my baby, a cheery sought of rock song, with a different arrangement, electric guitar, piano, and sax. It was a big hit on both sides of the atlantic for the Tremoloes. Then is a great soft jazz song in Bring another bottle, baby. It features what sounds like a marimba, a flute and spanish guitar and the orchestration gradually comes into it. It's great! Then there's a cheery little folk song in Portobello road, a rare opportunity to hear him whistle. I've found a love is a typical sixties teen symphony and despite its meaningless words, has a touching melody. I see a road features a piano intro and the banjo, with a bit of orchestration, though it's a skiffle piece. I don't think much of baby get your head screwed on, it's a typical pop song with orchestration, electric and acoustic guitars. Granny is [changing my mind] quite a good song and is probably best described as Jazz. It's typical sixties with loud trumpets,strings and electric guitar. WHen I speak to the flowers is a bitty poppy, and perhaos would have sounded better without the orchestraiton. Then there's some really good songs. The tramp is a sombre folk song which, is 90% just him and his acoustic, and the bass but it contains a short but sweet trumpet solo. Then there's a rocker in Come on and dance, with sax, organ and electric. It's quite pleasant. Then comes Hummingbird, what I think is one of the best songs of his career. It is like some 1800's song with soft orchestration, beautiful guitaring all the way through and a glockenspiel [metallic xylophone]in the chorus. Lady is a big ballad and he sings it well, though it's more like an E.Humperdink song. School is outisn't bad, good melody and I like the trumpet, it sounds like the one in downtown. I have no good words for I'm gonna get me a gun, a frantic tempoed revenge song full of orchestration but unmelodic. AS I said, the hits aren't all that wonderful but Hummingbird, The Tramp, Bring anothe bottle baby, Lady, Portobello road, I see a road and Here comes my baby I think are well worth a listen.

Young Artists Original Work.......1999-07-21

I say this album is good, because it shows originality. It was written by a young Cat Stevens at the time when he was in the begining of his music career. It is different from his other newer albums by still a great album. My favorite track is Here comes my baby. If you are a Cat Stevens fan, buy this album considering the fact that it's different with what you're used to.

Too slow and without rhyme.......2006-04-27

I can't believe that Ronan Keating decided to do this track with Yusuf Islam and in my opinion,it definitely falls short of the Boyzone version. "Father and Son" is a great song and has a much deeper sense of meaning that the daily love songs that we are invariably subjected to hear nowadays. I have admired Boyzone for so wonderfully accomplishing the 1970 Cats Stevens classic and I've forever enjoyed any Ronan Keating track. But this version featuring Yusuf Islam is far from a treasure for me and though this is not a better version,this is one that would make the listener want to get the Boyzone version.

This two-disc set of German Christmas music and poetry is fantastic! It includes a wide variety of styles: spoken poetry, children singing, folk-style instrumentals, church bells chiming, duets, small vocal ensembles and choral pieces. My wife and I felt like we were transported to Germany at Christmas for a concert! We listened to it for the first time on a hot August day, but were so captivated by the Christmas spirit we almost expected to see snow falling outside our windows. Beautiful, simply beautiful!
