It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants became a star big enough to pull off a concept album. Where so many other megawatt celebrities, be they living and land-based or fictional and sea-dwelling, can get all high-minded and grand when cobbling together a theme for their music, though, our man Sponge proves he's as humble and porous as ever on The Best Day Ever, a 26-track bonanza that delivers us into WH2O studios for a "live broadcast" from Bikini Bottom. Under the phony programmatic direction of snazzy DJ Al Bacore (get it?), SpongeBob & the Hi-Seas--a motley assemblage of characters including Plankton, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Sandy--trot out 13 songs between often gut-busting station-based interstitials (in one, hapless caller Patrick can't figure out he's supposed to turn down his radio to hear). The music and lyrics, if not the intentionally doofusy vocals, are inspired: Brian Wilson (how did they get him to agree to this?) sings backup on "Doin' the Krabby Patty," Flaco Jimenez lends Latin flair squeezebox-style on "Barnacles!," and Tommy Ramone of the Ramones hammers out a punkish percussive number on "Ridin' the Hook." Through it all, even when he's baring his soul in a heartwarming serenade to his tighty whiteys, SpongeBob's nice-guy persona sets a friendly, happy tone: the mood, loud and clear as a seal's bark, is pure best-day-ever celebration; the master of ceremonies works his yellowness, squareness and general dim-wittedness to masterful effect. --Tammy La Gorce

I dont have enough time to write something about each of these songs, but this cd is great!!! My favorite songs are: The Best Day Ever, Employee of the Month, Barnacles, Doing the Krabby Patty and Bikini Bottom/Rock Bottom. I reccomend this cd to Spongebob lovers.SpongeBob SquarePants - Season 4, Vol. 1SpongeBob SquarePants - Season 4, Vol. 2
The Best Album Ever!.......2007-05-27
Get ready for an amazing experience that will change your listening habits....then put on this album. The first song is a mind-blower! "The Best Day Ever" seems like a cute little summer fun song but after you get into it you realize that musically it's really heavy! This is like a Beach Boys song that sucks you in with it's cute little beat and lyric and then knocks you out with it's musical sophistication.
The next song is "Employee Of The Month". This is pure power-pop. The Who circa 1966 meets The Turtles.WOW!!!
"Under My Rock" is sung by Patrick. This is classic garage-rock. Rave-up at the end reminds me of The Count Five.
"My Tighty Whiteys" is simply the best song and best production that has been released since the hey day of the Brill Building. Again...this seems simple but it's super sophisticated! My vote for best bridge since "Wouldn't It Be Nice?". Andy Paley and Tom Kenny are a great writing team! This is what's missing from pop music!
There is something for every pop music fan on this album. Guest stars include...Brian Wilson , Mandy Barnett, Nino Tempo , Tommy Ramone, Flaco Jimenez, James Burton , N.R.B.Q., Tommy Morgan , Jerry "The Geator" Blavett
etc..
I never get tired of this record. It's on in my car all the time. I've given it to all my hip friends and they all love it , as do their young kids and their stoner , college-age kids!
It's a HIT!!!!

my granddaughter truly enjoyed this we often listen to it while doing chores and sing along
The Best Album Ever!!!.......2007-04-03
We went to a live performance by Tom Kenny, Mr. Lawrence and the guys who made this record down at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. It was fabulous!! The songs are WONDERFUL!!! If you want to get into a good mood, buy this album! The songs are like 60's beach music, which is a perfect fit for Spongebob. My favorite song is Employee of the month, but I also love Plankton's "You Will Obey!!" with it's explosion at the end. The whole album is done like a radio show. My daughter loves to say AAAAL Bacore!!! Who is the Tuneful Tuna, a dj. This CD is great for the entire family and I give it my highest recommendation.
Better than the Beatles White album........2007-03-31
One of the best CD's we ever listened to. Sponge Bob and Crew are at thier best. Pleasant harmonies and nice structure of music. Very pleasing arrangements.

Flaco Jimenez - Partners.......2005-09-11
5 Stars for Flaco and friends. This is the 3rd time I have purchased 'Partners' as I have enjoyed sharing it with friends. Emmylou is especially great on 'West Texas Waltz'.
Here's the skinny on Flaco.......2001-12-03
The concept of pairing talented sidemen with more reknowned guest musicians is not a new one, and more often than not the results are strangely flat. That is not the case here however. Flaco Jimenez along with his brother and father are famous bandleaders themselves in the world of conjunto and norteno border music. It was this notoriety that led to Flaco playing accordian on recordings from artists as diverse as Peter Rowan , The Texas Tornadoes and the Stones. On this wonderful CD, some of Flaco's biggest admirers repay the favor by appearing on his recording. Everything works here believe it or not. I always have some concern with Linda Ronstadt's interpretations of songs, but she's quite stunning on "Puente Roto". Steven Stills probably could have chosen something a little less dated to sing than "Change Partners",but hey, maybe it was Flaco's request and it'a a good 'un too. Everybody from Emmylou to Ry Cooder sounds like they're having a ball with there old friend Flaco.John Hiatt darn near steals the show with a lovely reading of his song "The Border". Los Lobos' David Hildago must be in heaven playing accordion with his hero on "Don't Worry Baby". And then there's Dwight Yoakum's cover of Warren Zevon's "Carmelita", a reading so poignant and heartfelt that it made me forget Zevon's pretty terrific version for a while. Country radio would never dare play "Carmelita" so you Yoakum fans will want to hear this. You'll be treating yourself to some splendid listening in the bargain.Nice job Flaco.
The one and only Flaco !!.......2001-10-10
I bought this cd years ago after I got into the Texas Tornados first release. I loved this cd! It moves and grooves.
He recruited 'partners' Stephan Stills ("Change Partners") Dwight Yoakum (on "Carmelita") and the always fabulous
Linda Ronstadt(on "Puente Roto").
I loved all the songs and was pleasently surprised at how versatile he is, and how he blends in so smoothly on all the tracks. It seems an effortless project...
Definitely one for the collection!
The King of Conjunto, With A Little Help From His Friends.......2000-08-17
Flaco is a national treasure, who makes records that are far better known by Mexicans & Mexican Americans than by your average American white guy (like myself).
So, this record might seem as a bit of a dicey proposition: Hook Flaco up with a bunch of people on the Warner roster and see what happens.
The results are almost perfect.
The high point is Dwight Yoakam guesting on what is the definitive read of Warren Zevon's "Carmelita." The effect is the same as Hendrix covering "All Along The Watch Tower": Dylan wrote and performed it, but Hendrix OWNS it. This is the case with "Carmelita," and reason enough to buy the disc.
Other high points include a great read of "Marina," "Las Golondrinas," and his father's "Eres Un Encanto." "El Puente Roto" is wonderful as a duet with Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris absolutely glows on "West Texas Waltz."
Maybe the only problem with some tracks is that they suffer by comparison. Stephen Stills sounds fine on his "Change Partners," but they play it too fast. Ry Cooder is featured on "The Girls From Texas" (yes, he brought Jim Keltner with him). While it's a fun read, the arrangment only *seems* loose, while playing comes off as studied and stiff. Los Lobos show up on "Don't Worry Baby," but don't really ignite (like their cover of "Bertha," on the Grateful Dead tribute "Deadicated").
Overall, a great record that serves as a easy introduction for North of the Border audiences, giving a little taste of Authentic Northern Mexican (Or Tex-Mex, depending on your view) spice to go along with the regular fare.

Accordion master Flaco Jimenez returns in 2000 with an engaging blend of traditional-style conjunto, Tornado-style Tex-Mex, and more straight-ahead rock- and folk-tinged country. Cuts like the delightfully bubbly "Alright, Alright" (with pals Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens) and the swamp-pop "You Got Me Wonderin'"--two of four songs produced by Yoakam collaborator Pete Anderson--call to mind Flaco's former compadre Doug Sahm. Other highlights include the Anderson-produced "I Found Out," a spunky shuffle featuring Bekka Bramlett; an irresistible cover of "Love Me Do" with Owens; and the three more-traditional songs (two sung in Spanish) that close the album. Though there's a bit of filler tossed in, Jimenez delivers a catchy project that will only continue to bring his unique Tex-Mex roots to a wider audience. --Marc Greilsamer

Beautiful Music By A Master & His Friends.......2002-10-18
If you have enjoyed any of the many records Mr Jimenez has lent his talents to in the past, you CANNOT go wrong with this one....a great selection of songs, I would certainly like Flaco Jimenez to get attention for what he is: a national treasure.
"Love Me Do" is fun and the title song "Sleepytown" is like a long-lost classic. Trust me, you will play this one over + over.
Head For The Border.......2000-12-23
This seems to be more about Dwight and Buck than Flaco. For most of the cuts, Mr. Jimenez (surely one of the most sensitive, electrifying performers in the Tex/Mex genre) appears only to be serving as a back-up musician for Yoakum, Owens, and a number of other not-very-interesting talents. This one fails on a number of levels - there is no cohesive musical theme, the songs and arrangements are lackluster, and there is not one rousing or compelling number on the whole disc.
Flaco's skills are drastically under-utilized here. Que lastima (what a shame) indeed.
Wonderfully fun!.......2000-11-15
Flaco Jimenez and friends have offered the world a very lively CD! Although I love the remake of the Beatles' "Love Me Do," and the honky-tonk fun of "A Little Drink, A Little Dance," I think that Flaco Jimenez's talents shine brightest on "Desiree" and "Amor."
The world's Best Accordionist.......2000-09-16
I have listened to Mr. Jimenez CDs, and I am very impressed! But this one seems to be one of his best. When you get Dwight Yoakam and Mr Buck Owens, Lee Roy Parnell and Mr. Flaco JImenez Together, it is quite a combination. MY favorite song is LOVE ME DO , AS IT goes back to The Beatles, and my Dad and Mom were and are big fans of them. All of the songs are great and tell a story, as most country songs do. AMOR, is a beautiful love ballad and I believe will go big with the latin market, also BAILA lA GENTE, (CUMBIA/SALSA) But personally I love all the country/Rock that is in this CD. It is a must have for all of Mr. Jimenez's fans, and if they are not fans, they will become fans. Mr. Nunie Rubio, does a great job as lead vocalist. He is very good looking and believe he has great charisma. Thanks for allowing me to give my review on this great CD that is a must for everyone.

I bought this CD because this is the type of music I grew up with and I had heard Flaco Jimenez with The Texas Tornados and The Mavericks. Mr. Jimenez makes playing the accordian as cool as jazz. The vocals have the down-to-earth tones that I imagine was heard around the 'valle' during the my parents' era.

The Best of Flaco Jimenez.......2000-08-12
This CD is one of the best I have heard of Flaco Jimenez albums since it has some of his best Tex-Mex recordings, he has done through out the years. the music sound, the songs are some of his best. And I really enjoyed the pamphlet it has inside the album, since it has some of his personal story and several pictures in there most people have not seen. It is certainly a CD, that everyone that's a fan of his, should have in their collection. Thanks to Arhoolie records for doing such a good job in this CD. I certainly enjoy this CD and all the pictures that come with it. Lots of success to all of you. A great fan and friend.

Though little known in Mexico, Jiménez is the conjunto figure who has captured a non-Latino audience, through his work with pop and rock figures from Doug Sahm to Ry Cooder and his membership in the Texas Tornados. Son of accordion pioneer Santiago Jiménez Sr., Jiménez is perhaps the most fiery and brilliant button accordion player on record. His dazzling instrumental lines are balanced by understated vocals, and always backed by fine bands. This CD includes his Grammy winning LP, plus selections from the earlier "El Sonido de San Antonio," perhaps his single greatest album. Here is a masterpiece of stripped-down, Texas barroom music. --Elijah Wald
Customer Reviews:
Real Tex-Mex Treat.......2001-02-13
I grew up in California listening to a lot of Mexican music but never to anything like this. When I moved to Texas, I found modern Tex-Mex/Nortena quite distasteful. What was played on the radio had a dreadfully cheesy, commercial top 40 sound to it and so I was completely turned off. Then I saw Flaco play onstage with local legend Tish Hinojosa. I was captivated by his mastery of the accordion and the verve with which he played. He was good and he knew it! So I went out and bought this blockbuster of an album. I already knew the title cut and liked it, having heard the excellent Los Lobos rendition. When I put it on, I found that I am partial to rancheras, polkas, and the waltz. My favorite rancheras here are the title cut, Ni el Dinero ni Nada, and Gritenme Piedras del Campo. Not only does Jimenez play with great virtuosity, he also sings with great emotion. The best polkas are the world-famous El Barrelito, Traigo Un Recuerdo, and the high-energy La Barranca which inspires a desire to get up and dance. The waltz Morir Sonando is reminiscent of the style of Argentine waltz which was popular simultaneously with tango in the 1920s. I also really enjoy the accordion heroics displayed on Juarez as well as the vocals on the cancion Las Gaviotas. I like the rest of the album too except for Rosa Maria. Cumbia does not appeal to me. If you like Mexican music or are a fan of accordion, then this CD should appeal to you. Flaco Jimenez is a musician's musician and his music is the best introduction to what Tex-Mex can be in competent hands. A working knowledge of Spanish of course will add to your enjoyment of this brilliant work, but musically this is something even a monolingual gringo can enjoy. Ay Te Dejo en San Antonio is a real Tex-Mex treat. Treat yourself today!

El Rey Del Tex Mex Polka!.......2006-01-26
Even los Muertes must rise dancing from the Dead when Flaco and his conjunto fire up a dancing tornado of the dustbowl proportions! This is Flaco at his performing finest. Unmatchable upbeat tempo that creates an infectious feeling of joy and hope, despite many serious and dark undertones in his lyrics/themes (the US war against the Vietnamese) Again, over an hour of sheer tejano mayhem! If you don't react, you are a human slab of ice.
There is no one like Flaco Jimenez for accordian music.......1999-10-15
Flaco is true foot stomping Mexican roots music. He has spread this type of music all over the world, I have listened to his music since I was a young girl living in Taylor, TX. Adelante, Flaco!!

WHAT JUAREZ IS MISSING!.......2001-05-22
Thirty years ago or so I asked a street hustler in Juarez where I could go to hear mariachi or other reasonably authentic Mexican music and was told, "We don't play that cheat no more. You wanna hear that cheat go back to San Antonio." Never did find it..until I stumbled on Flaco's Amigos. It was worth every minute of the waiting. Talk about a bargain. Not only did I get Flaco Jimenez's considerable skill on the accordion, but I discovered that Flaco teams up on several songs on this disc with the talented Peter Rowan (famous for his "Free Mexican Air Force Is Flying Tonight," one of his duets with Flaco.) And THEN I found one of Flaco's amigos was one of my long standing musical amigo, Ry Cooder, who turns up here with his customary panache on mandolin and slide guitar. This one's a bargain at ten times the price.!
