Raul Malo's second covers album in two years skews slightly closer to the classic country that influenced his early career with the Mavericks. It is also likely to further alienate followers of his rootsy former band as he shifts into crooning, jazzy supper-club mode on these countrypolitan versions of classic and a few more recent C&W tracks. All twang is removed here, replaced with a horn section, a featured clarinet, and slick pop arrangements of standards associated with Elvis ("(Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I"), Hank Williams ("Take These Chains from My Heart," "Cold, Cold Heart"), and Ray Price (Kris Kristofferson's often-interpreted "For the Good Times"). Malo sure has the pipes for these reworkings, but the disc is most convincing when the syrupy support takes a back seat to the relatively swinging horns on Dwight Yoakam's "It Only Hurts Me When I Cry" and "Pocket of a Clown." Regardless of your age, this is very definitely your parents' country, as Malo transforms himself into a younger, slightly hipper Dean Martin. You can practically taste the olive in his martini and touch his crisp tuxedo as he eases into this material with satiny-smooth vocals and classy delivery. But the line between seductive and snoozy is a thin one, and established fans might wonder where the old fire has gone as they navigate through this glossy set of easy-listening, after-hours mood music. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
"There's a sophistication in country music, particularly in the songs that were written in the 1950s and'60s, that sometimes gets overlooked," says Malo. "I wanted to make an album that showed these songs can be treated as pop standards, because that's what they are, really. It's just that the artists who had success with them were country artists, although Tony Bennett had a hit with a Hank Williams song, so it isn't that unusual for the genres to cross each other."In approaching this material, Malo and his band--Robert Chevrier (piano), Jay Weaver (bass), Tom Lewis (drums) and Jim Hoke (saxophone, clarinet and pedal steel)--drew their inspiration from the classic Nashville productions of the era. "This record definitely pays homage to the kind of country music Owen Bradley created," Malo acknowledges. "But the Ray Charles album Modern Sounds in Country & Western Music was the specific inspiration for this one. Ray proved that country music can be sophisticated and jazzy as well, and we wanted to do our take on it."

Raul Malo's velvety tenor is warm and dirty in all the right ways. As the primary songwriter and frontman for the Mavericks and as a member of all-star band Los Super Seven, Malo's soulful croon has bent round the blue notes of country and spread itself thickly yet pliantly between and on top of the polyrhythms of Latin roots music. A tremendous and far-reaching effort, Today (Malo's solo debut) showcases not only what a genre-blending writer and powerful singer he is, but makes clear just how connected Malo is in his delivery and phrasing, both in Spanish and in English. There's something behind and under every syllable the man utters, from the excitable title cut to "It Takes Two to Tango," a frisky duet with pal and vocal powerhouse in her own right Shelby Lynne. Today, a full-on exploration of roots and rhythm, rocks righteously and rolls with balanced restraint and abandon. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:

Born in Miami of Cuban parents, Raul is best known as the founder and frontman of Grammy-winning, multi-platinum band the Mavericks. Formed in 1990, the Mavericks were one of the decade's biggest country bands, recording seven albums, including their 1994 breakthrough, What a Crying Shame, and twice being named Top Vocal Group by the Country Music Association.
This is Raul Malo's first solo Christmas album, which features Raul's beautiful and unique interpretations of beloved holiday tunes. Some songs are distinctly stylized, some traditional, others sung with a hint of humor, but all very nostalgic.

As vocalist for the Mavericks, Raul Malo's powerful voice and the band's success in mixing vintage material with originals arranged in "classic" styles helped revive eclecticism in Nashville. Here, he and a first-rate band of acoustic sidemen run through country, pop, and folk standards, most (not all) well-known. Mixing Bob Dylan ("You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go") and Gordon Lightfoot ("Early Morning Rain") with Jimmie Rodgers ("Waiting for a Train") and the Louvin Brothers ("The Great Atomic Power") is quintessential Malo. Having long ago channeled Roy Orbison's vocal dynamics, it's a given that he soars on "Blue Bayou" and the Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer pop standard "Moon River." He and the musicians rework Van Morrison's "Bright Side of the Road" into a powerful gospel-style rave-up. Good as those three numbers are, the players don't sustain that same level throughout. These supremely gifted pickers, all respected instrumentalists, play it safe with solos and arrangements. Even Malo himself seems uncharacteristically low-keyed. The music is certainly pleasant, but given such a stellar blend of talent, it's also disappointingly predictable. --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

Favorites tunes? Louvin Brothers' "Great Atomic Power", Roy's "Blue Bayou", and Hank Williams's "Weary Blues". Although the instrumental is great, I'd love to hear Malo singing Jimmie Roger's "Waiting For A Train". Maybe next time. The weakest try is Gram Parsons' "Hot Burrito", once Malo himself has done it better. Keep on singin' Raul and God bless you.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

As the frontman for the Mavericks and a member of Los Super Seven, Raul Malo has applied his Orbison-like delivery to an eclectic array of material. On this, his latest solo effort, the warbler enlists veteran producer Peter Asher to focus on romantic balladry, as string-laden arrangements surround Malo's tremulous voice on the opening title track (a '70s hit for songwriter J.D. Souther) and the soaring "Feels Like Home" (reprised as the closer in a duet with Martina McBride). The song selection highlights Malo's vocal range, as he finds the bittersweet essence in a slowed-down rendition of the Everly Brothers' "So Sad," a dramatic reading of the Bee Gees' "Run to Me," and a lilting take on Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart." He even tackles Etta James's signature tune, "At Last," its jazzy, smoky sophistication punctuated by a trumpet solo. The cover of Willie Nelson's "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground" provides the album's main link to country, but even here the bedrock organ and soul choir sound closer to the church than the roadhouse. The stellar selection provides a superb showcase for Malo's shimmering voice. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:

When Malo(Bad) Is Good.......2007-06-14
Malo boasted a steady lineup of 8, including 2 guitarists(Jorge Santana on lead) with 2 trumpet players adding a more Latin than Rock feel to the majority of the music.Heavy shades of Santana on Cafe" while the rest of the album moves along really smoothly.
Guests include (Coke Escovedo) Timbales,Congas, bongos timbales and interesting that the lead vocal is a fellow named Richard Bean who is not a member of Malo but a co writer of the hit Suavecito that he sings lead vocal.
Also of interest is the lush front cover of the Mexican warrior and his lady..indeed it is comparable (coincidental?) to Santana's 1970's Abraxas (both depicting themes of women looking up to a man/angel)...in any event further comparisons stop there since this debut is a fine one that deserves 5 stars recorded in California in 1972 whose emotional groove and joy remains intact.
4 and a half stars: Malo (1973).......2007-01-06
here's my grouping
1. pana (5 stars out of 5, an energetic intro to the album)
2. Just say goodbye (5 out of 5, some mellow parts, some crazy, great song)

4. cafe' (3 stars out of 5, the weak track,)
5. suavecito (5 out of 5, one of the best songs you will hear!)
6. peace (5 out of 5, nice intro!)

As befits a release on a fledgling indie label, Dualtone's tribute to Johnny Cash celebrates the feistier fringes of the Man in Black's catalog, adding a few mainstream milestones. In what is plainly a labor of love for all concerned, highlights extend from the pop innocence of "Ballad of a Teenage Queen" by Rodney Crowell (formerly married to Johnny's daughter Rosanne) to the folkier strains and husband-and-wife harmonies of "Pack Up Your Sorrows" by Bruce Robison and Kelly Willis to the honky-tonk majesty of "I Still Miss Someone" by pianist Earl Poole Ball. Some of the more familiar touchstones don't fare quite as well, with Billy Burnette turning in a tepid "Ring of Fire" and Dale Watson singing in a lower than comfortable register on "I Walk the Line," though James Intveld rises to the challenge of "Folsom Prison Blues." The house band and the largely acoustic arrangements give the 18-cut album more unity than many such projects, as the collection shows why one of the most influential and commercially successful artists in country's history remains an icon of alt-country as well. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
