Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina RodenAmazon.com

Spiritual and Exotic.......2007-01-12
Thoughtful, spiritual and exotic, this music weaves a spell of peace over your soul. The first time you listen to this CD it only introduces you to the main rhythms, but as you continue to listen, new worlds open up in delicate nuances of beauty.
This is the type of music that infuses you with its subtlety until you become part of the dance of life. It is unique in the way it first asks to be observed from a distance, then invites you closer and then finally moves from within you as it evokes a flowing connection between sound and movement.
Tracks:
707 Delight-Kirtan Mix - Worshipful and awakening, you begin to feel the yoga mood.
You Are We Am I: Blue Mix - Vibratory elements that harmonize and synchronize flow through you like a refreshing breeze.
Chandini Chowk - Waves of celebratory sound and acoustic drums with elements of the exotic like a beach vacation or the slow sway of trees in a breeze.
Zindagi - A reverberating track with elements of playful rebound.
Deep South - A somewhat jazzy offering with a sensual appeal.
Roots East Dub - Subtle drums with relaxing waves of emotion.
Tenfold - Relaxing and cleansing with spiritual dimensions.
Joi - Playfully spirals you out into the unknown.
Ke Lei Ma La - Oceanic textures and deep reverberations invite you into deep pools of sound.
Sangit Dub - You can almost imagine walking beneath a full moon and hearing the strains of this track off in the distance, mingling with nature's orchestra.
Invocation - A blending of vocals so beautiful they melt you like a warm embrace of sound.
Durga Pahimam - Deeply relaxing and nurturing...completes the soul cleansing and fills you with a feeling of peace.
Shiva Rea creates some of the most beautiful spiritual electronica I've heard in this lifetime and this is a compilation of music she enjoys.

Shiva Rea is deeply connected with the flow of life and embraces a soul cleansing spiritual dimension in her work that brings us closer to what we know to be home, that peaceful place of inner reflection and beauty.
This CD would be perfect for Yoga or Meditation or a combination of dance, yoga and meditation. Due to the way the music flows you can fully experience all the levels of the Yoga experience. Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Must have!.......2006-01-12
an artistic triumph.......2005-12-28
Mystical.
Mr Gurdjieff sang or hummed his songs and Thomas deHartmann "wrote them down and added harmony". Hard to tell where Mr. G stops and deHartmann starts, but we will never know. Mr G speaks of Objective Music and the vast majority pieces of subjective music. This is the former.
I must confess that many other peformances and arrangements of the music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, the way it was "supposed to be played", left me cold. Most of the other renditions I heard were played by those Drunk with Orthodoxy, amaturish or just plain lacking in musical ability.
This version is a revelation!
I think G would approve of this.
I like this, I think that the arrangements for cello and piano instead of just piano, as written, is an artistic triumph. The cello played by Anja Lechner expresses the peace and meditative sadness inherent in the music, even if that wasn't the way it's usually played. Composers are often not the best intepreters of their music.
That having been said there are three part to this music, pieces by G/deH, Tsabropoulos and then more G/deH and when the pianist sticks his own works in the middle of Mr G's the quality of composition falls somewhat. His compositions are or similar mood and type to G/deH, but really don't have the same achieve the same heights of depth and soul. (Mr G would say they are not Objective Music, I guess.) Perfomances of all pieces are uniformly good.
I would hope this group will arrange more of Mr G's music in this format in the future.
Recommended.
Interpretations of Gurdjieff's Music.......2005-12-14
The arrangements do not seem to have captured the spirit of Gurdjieff's music very well. If someone did with Beethoven what has been done with Gurdjieff's music here, I don't think it would be taken seriously.
If you are interested in a new "twist" on Gurdjieff's music, then you may enjoy this. If you enjoy Gurdjieff's music closer to the way which he composed it, then you will want to look for a different recording.
Inspired Subjectivity Encounters An Objective Music.......2005-03-19
In the 1920's, at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, Gurdjieff continued this work by collaborating with Thomas de Hartmann on creating an "objective music". A music that "would work upon all listeners equally, focusing their mental life and bringing them to a new relationship with the living universe". It is probably Keith Jarrett, who has worked closely with the Gurdjieff Societies of both London and New York, that has produced the most "authentic" or "objective" reading of Gurdjieff's music in recent years.
On this ECM New Series disc of 2004, "Chants, Hymns and Dances", Anja Lechner and Vassilis Tsabropoulos decided to take a more liberal, "subjective", approach. Their interest in these compositions is perhaps more "musical than philosophical". Their suitability for this task should be apparent. Lechner's most recent work has involved interpreting the music of both Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov. While Tsabropoulos, for his part, has worked with ancient Byzantine music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church.
According to the informative liner notes by Steve Lake, "This music exists for the individual to make of it what he or she will, according to capacity". Lechner and Tsabropoulos both have deep experience with composed music and also with the process of free improvisation. Indeed, these two performers brilliantly interpret Gurdjieff's music with gentle assurance and a bright spontaneity. The five original compositions on this disc by Tsabropoulos even suggest an affinity with the Gurdjieff sensibility that borders on predestination.
"Chants, Hymns and Dances" is worthy of repeated encounter and remains serenely vital with each new audition. This is an ambiguous music that defies easy spiritual classification.

When Sting collaborated with Cheb Mami on the Brand New Day track "Desert Rose," he created a surprising demand for Arabic crossover pop. This collection provides a suitable next stop for those whose taste was whetted by that collaboration. Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas opens the album with "Mon Amie la Rose," a maudlin little French tune she twists through her wringer until it is utterly transformed. "Desert Rose" turns up as a frisky remix by Victor Calderone, while Rachid Taha and the trance choir, B'Net Marrakech, appear in the compelling, orchestrated "Qalantica." Mami is heard on his own on one tune, but is eclipsed by the gut-shredding Khaled, the undisputed king of Algerian rai. The harder-edged electronic outings are standouts, while the tracks that are the Arabic equivalent of adolescent pop don't hold up nearly as well. This compilation, however, mostly eschews the dross in favor of tunes that go the distance. --Christina RodenCustomer Reviews:
Mix down the vocals, and maybe.......2007-06-04
Kind of disappointing.......2007-02-02
I also loved that Desert Rose song and the amazing voice of Cheb Mami with Sting.
I bought this CD expecting a sexy "One Thousand and One Nights" music style, or a good fusion of traditional and modern sounds, but instead, what I got was a KITSCH POP version of arabic songs.
Some of the songs are just bad taste, you just want to forward them as quickly as possible.
I should have guessed just by the look of the cover. It reflects the music as well. The painting might be nice, but the mix with the modern computer added photo image and the strange balls of roses just don't work well together. The same goes for the songs.
I don't recommend it, unless you're looking for cheesy disposable pop.
Mediocre Middle Eastern collection.......2006-12-21
1)A remix of Cheb Mami&Sting's hit song "Desert Rose." It's very danceable, and in sync with the spirit of the original.Cheb Mami and Sting had one of those rare great celebrity duets. They powerfully melded their styles, making something wonderful.
2)Khaled is always great. His songs are never a disappointment--no wonder he's called the King of Rai.
3)Amina's "Dis Moi Pourquoi" is an excellent dancefloor song.It was a hit in France, and musically,it works. It's French chanson meeting Tunisian pop.
4)Speaking of French chanson,Natacha Atlas radically re-imagines Edith Piaf's "Mon amie la rose",transforming it from a Gallic weepie into a sensual Arabic serenade.
5)Hakim,who is considered a prince of rai,has a great song.
6)Cheb Mami's "Hay wadi hay galbi" is amazing. While Khaled is almost Arabic R&B,and Hakim is a Middle Eastern boy band sort, this song shows off Cheb Mami's musical gymnastics. It's quite stunning. After hearing this,I got his "Saida" album.
Instead of getting this,I reccomend Putumayo's "Sahara Lounge" (its best Middle Eastern compilation)and "Arabic Groove." "Desert Roses" has a half-dozen hits, the rest are forgettable. If you like Middle Eastern music, explore Putumayo's compilations instead.

His "say it / play it" approach makes learning these ancient rhythms simple and fun. Included in the inset of this CD are the written and spoken phrases for each rhythm. The "cheat-sheet" inset, depicting each rhythm in plain-sentence, spoken verse (not musical notation or some strange code), along with the spoken-word only track of ALL the rhythms (for ease of memorization in the car etc.), are by themselves worth the price of this CD.Simply put, this project is a "must have" for all serious hand drummers and dancers.

Rivers of Sound on Air from Tibet.......2000-07-12
The decision to purchase this CD was promted by my having had the opportunity to experience this artist live one evening during the time of H.H. the Dalai Lama's recent visit to Los Angeles, June 2000. While being introduced, I learned that Nawang had spent many years in retreat in the Himalaya Mountains and, in my mind after hearing his music, returned with his performance as a gift to the world. There is vision, nature and love in his melodies that transcend any perceived limit we may choose to put on life; age, rank, gender, or culture.
Having returned from L.A. after two weeks, you'd think I'd have found something different to leave in my CD player! This is music that can only enhance and add to experiences of life. I can play it soft through the night, during the evening or weekend throughout any task, or during the day while I'm at work, as my cat seems to even be more loving when I finally get home at night.
This CD may not rock your world, but it will definitely elevate it!
