Album Description

Jamie Cullum returns to center stage of the jazz crossover world with an incredible new album, Catching Tales. A smorgasbord of jazz standards, pop, swing, and r&b grooves, this is the ultimate Jamie Cullum album. Jamie has collaborated with a range of music svengalis, including Guy Chambers, Dan the Automator (from the Gorillaz and collaborations with DJ Shadow), Salaam Remi, Ed Harcourt, and many more, but he's careful not to forget his roots. His brother Ben has cowritten a number of tracks on this album, as he did on Twentysomething.

Album Description

This Deluxe Limited Edition features 15 tracks plus bonus DVD containing Telling Tales, an exclusive 20 minute behind-the-scenes documentary following Jamie throughout recording and mixing the album, the video shoot and on the road across Europe, including a fabulous interview. 28-page booklet containing exclusive photos, Jamie rarities, extended liner notes plus a track-by-track introduction from Jamie himself! Universal. 2005.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't this thing have a zero setting?.......2007-05-20

To all of you who fell for it once again, I shall repeat myself, though in a slightly different and more direct way: if you want jazz go and buy a Charlie Parker record; if you want great jazz singing, go and buy some Billie, or Ella for that matter, or some 50s Sinatra. Jaime Cullum is not, and never has been a jazz musician. He was labelled as one simply to sell pop records, but that is an insult to pop music. This is yet again rubbish thrown at you by a multi international company. A fool is easily parted with his money, yet again! Ha HA HA HA HA!!!!

2 out of 5 stars What happened?.......2007-03-20

After two fabulous contemporary "old school" jazz albums which I would recommend to anyone (Pointless Nostalgic and Twentysomething), this album is more like some sort of bad half-breed between "old school" jazz and pop. And not that a cross between jazz and pop couldn't be good music, but this one just really isn't. It seems that he is trying to transition between musical genres, and is falling flat on his face in the process. I have listened to it again and again trying to make myself like it, but it just isn't happening. Save a few tracks, the songs on this album are rather uninspired and dull, and I fear that these days Jamie Cullum really does "Want To Be A Popstar"...

4 out of 5 stars Better voice, less hooks.......2007-03-16

Cullum's voice and musicality are better than his last album but the tunes don't hook me they same way as the stuff he&Ben wrote for "Twentysomething."

However, this is still an enjoyable album with lots to like.

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-03-14

I hope this guy has a long career in music.

I wish Amazon would start packaging as the previously did, just last year. I had to order this and seveal other things twice just to get an undamaged copy. PLEASE aamazon return to the days when you cared about items arriving undamaged.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer class.......2003-11-13

Back in the seventies, I learned the hard way that you never lend out your Jack albums. While I will never see some of that vinyl again, I welcome the chance to catch up on that and more with the hopefully ever-increasing CD back catalog.

There was something almost mystical about Jack's earlier recordings, and if I had to pick out one album that I would consider my favorite, it would be There's Love... which gave us the Jack anthem And I Love Her.

I know we're all going to disagree over his 'best' work, but with an artist of his caliber, you can only really talk about your favorite albums - another classic being Sings Michel Legrand.

Last I heard the man is still going strong, and still doing sold-out world tours, and from the last recent photo I saw, he's still outrageously handsome, dang it.

A superb double Jack set and from the look of Amazon's excellent database, one of several paired sets. Now I just have to catch up on the rest.

Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL "TWO-FER" BY JACK JONES!.......2002-08-15

This coupling of two of Jack's best albums offers the music lover immeasurable nostalgia, enjoyment and collectability all in one great CD. The first half of this CD latches on to the (then) recent bossa-nova craze and takes a handful of standards and lets Jack 'bossa-nova' his way through them. It's inspiring the way the arrangements sound so tailor made to old chestnuts like THE LAMP IS LOW, the underappreciated Hoagy Carmichael-penned torch song I GET ALONG WITHOUT YOU VERY WELL and the recent broadway hits of the 60's SHE LOVES ME and ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS. But the real beauty here is the second half of this CD, the album THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE, the charts contributed by Nelson Riddle (the only time he and Jack had the opportunity to work together) Nelson's work with Jack is much like any other work he's done with any other singer - flawless. A Riddle chart always got the best out of the singer, and this is more than evident as Nels and Jack put their indelible stamp on the Beatles' classic ballad, AND I LOVE HER. Other geniune treasures to be found are the old Al Jolson standard, YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU and the lilting WHILE WE'RE YOUNG. You'll find the title track with its lyric from the able hands of Sammy Cahn, THERE'S LOVE AND THERE'S LOVE a cute tune that may border on commercial, but it never comes off that way with Jack's tender reading and Nelson's thoughful chart behind him. A really wonderful "two-fer" to have in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-28

These two Jack Jones albums on the Kapp label from the mid '60's are long overdue on cd! The first album "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. The second album "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic, which features the only time that Jack collaborated with the great legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are sung beautifully and smoothly by Jones, and the arrangements are incredibly lush. The album is an absolute classic. This cd is a must have for any Jack Jones fan and fan of the great popular standards!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Singing!.......2000-04-27

These two albums by Jack Jones from the mid '60's are a perfect example of what makes Jack Jones so great! "She Loves Me" features songs with a latin beat, done superbly by Jones. "There's Love & There's Love & There's Love" is a classic album featuring the only time that Jack collaborated with the great and legendary arranger Nelson Riddle. The songs are romantic and lush, the singing is silky smooth and top notch. The arrangements are unbelieveable. This cd is a definite must have for any Jack Jones fan!

5 out of 5 stars Two Master Disks from a Vocal Master on 1 CD: Big Deal!.......1999-10-28

Incredible but MCA United Kingdom has done a better work on Jack Jones' Kapp originals than MCA America has. An entire album with arrangements by Nelson Riddle would be enough to enchant our hearts. So imagine one more excellent album in the same CD package.

4 out of 5 stars The Best, Brilliant, Ballads of The Moody Blues!.......2007-04-17

Just like the compilation, "Say It With Love," "Ballads" features a collection of pleasant and relaxing Moody Blues tunes, through the years ... I highly recommend either of these CD's if you are a collector or would like to get a hold of some of The Moody Blues' finest tracks.

Here is some info. of interest, in regard to certain tracks on this release ... Included here are the shorter versions of "Nights In White Satin" and "Tuesday Afternoon," as featured on "The Best Of The Moody Blues."

The only negative point to this release is that the two tracks that were stated to be the "full versions" aren't really the full versions at all ... The details in the song list are misleading, so "Isn't Life Strange" comes to a close at about 2/3rds of the original version and "Driftwood" is the shorter version that appears on "Time Traveller" and all other compilation albums, not the original version, from "Octave" ... Because of CD space, this is probably why these tracks were edited (This was why I gave this album four stars instead of five).

One major plus to this CD includes a return of the rare stereo mix of "Never Comes The Day," originally found on a version of the 1985 compilation, "Voices In The Sky" ... Compared to the mix from "On The Threshold Of A Dream", this mix features better stereo separation of the overdubbed vocals, guitars, and percussion, best heard through headphones!

In closing, if you love the mellotron/synthesizer-driven sound of The Moody Blues, choose "Ballads!" Thanks for reading! God Bless... :)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-27

First realy heard of this guy when I saw him on the music of black origin awards where he thanked all the black musicians who had came before him. I thought to myself "Now here is both an intelligent and decent musician" I then heard him play his rendition of 'everlasting love' Now I am not one for corny old tunes but the energy he put into the song even had the audience on their feet.

I hear there are different editions of this CD some missing 'high and dry' and a couple of others which is a great pity. This is a realy nice CD to sit back and listen to after a hard day (or even in the car on the way home from a hard day) it will certainly save you from coming home and kicking the cat (they cat will definatly appriciate it)

Sit back in that quiet room of your house, grab yourself a drink and put on this CD. Trust me, you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Twentysomething...wonderful something!!!.......2006-08-30

I had a bad quality copy of Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething that I had fallen in love with, and shared with my family and friends; and they fell in love with it too! After seeing him in concert in my town, and finding out that there was actually a special edition of this cd; I rushed onto Amazon and bought it. I absolutely love it! It's much better quality than the one I had, and showcases Jamie's amazing talent. Many of the songs he arranged himself, which I think is rather impressive since he was so young (bear in mind though, that I am no music expert). And a few of the songs on the album are written by him, too. He does some more classic songs as well, and even manages and cover of Jimi Hendrix and Radiohead. All in all, this is one of the best cd's that I own, and I will continue to wear it out in my player for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars I think I'm in Love.......2005-03-23

Oh my God. This album is just fantastic! I didn't like jazz music, until now.
The lyrics are beautiful, and a kid that cute playing the piano it's so sexy. I can't wait to hear more of this talented artist.

5 out of 5 stars Doro Pesch: After Warlock.......2005-09-06

I don't usually like The Ballads collections but Doro's ballads are SO beautiful. The two rare songs "You Got Me Singing" and "Children of the Night" are so beautiful! There's of course "Für Immer" which was released in Warlock's "Triumph And Agony" (the best Doro album ever). Then there's songs like "In Freiheit Stirbt Mein Herz", "Fall for Me Again", "I'll Make It on My Own", "I'll Be Holding on" just to mention some great songs. Actually the only song I don't like so much is "Alles Ist Gut"...it's too peaceful. I like "True at Heart" album very much. There's many great ballads, like "With the Wave of Your Hand" which cannot be found in this album. "Fall for Me Again" and "I'll Make It on My Own" are the ones in "True at Heart". Doro has made great ballads afterwards too. Check out also the albums "Fight" and "Calling the Wild".

5 out of 5 stars the ballads.......2000-07-20

When you hear the word 'Warlock' you usually don't think 'Ballads', but that's what you get with Doro Pesch. She is amazing. The fast and heavy songs are incredible and equally as moving as these ones, but it's great to have the slower ones put together on this cd and it makes a perfect addition to any true music fan's collection.

    5 out of 5 stars true class.......2006-04-20

To find some of Tony's solo work together with 2 of my favourite Spandau songs, 'True' and 'Through The Barricades' on 1 CD was a real treat. Pity 'Gold' wasn't included but nevertheless this is a great CD. Tony pours so much heart into the songs that the emotion is almost tangible.
He is such an underrated singer and has not achieved the success that he deserves. I'm glad that Duran Duran's 'Save A Prayer' has been included. Tony visited South Africa about 10 or 12 years ago, maybe more, and on a night time live show performed that song as a duet with Claire Johnston (of Mango Groove fame, for those who know).
True class from a class act!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!.......2005-07-11

All I want to say this CD is pure emotion...Every song has its own personality, although some of them are covers. Listening to Duran Duran's hit, "Save a prayer", is an experience you can't miss. It's the magic of an eternal voice...Thank you Tony!

    5 out of 5 stars Great singer.......2005-01-16

Tony is an amazing talent...wish he would catch back on in the USA. Great album.

4 out of 5 stars Superb Unique Voice.......2004-07-16

Tony Hadley will always be associated with Spandau Ballet. As a solo singer - he has not achieved all the glamour that Spandau Ballet have. However, he is still a great singer on his own. And a remake of Duran Duran's Save A Prayer - that song is never easy to sing, and Tony has done it well!

His songs may sound out-dated, but his voice is evergreen.

4 out of 5 stars into all kinds of music.......2004-01-15

3 out of 5 stars Not as well known as it deserves to be.......2007-04-11

Beverley Craven has an enchanting understated voice and a skillful style of songwriting. Her first big hit "Promise Me" touched many people with it's intimate and personal style, and was a great success. Sadly the praise was shortlived, and even though the album sold remarkabley well for some time, being a great singer and songwriter as well as a beautiful woman to boot did not ensure lasting success for Beverley, which is a real pity. This may have been due to her being pigeonholed as a "woman's" artist and perceived as anodyne and unadventurous. This was probably because the follow up singles to "Promise Me" did not have the same surprising depth, and they were too quickly dismissed as restaurant background music. It's true that Beverley's music is somewhat un-challenging, but it's still very good and should be appreciated for the strengths that it does have.

You can see from the tracklisting on this CD where Beverley Craven's success lies...6 of the tracks are from her first (and best) album, followed by only four from the other two. There's a clue here as to what you should do...buy the first album! Then if you like it buy the other two. So why not have just this hits package? Because ALL the remaining tracks from the first album are too good to do without. Without "You're Not The First", "I Listen To The Rain" and "Missing You", Beverley's initial output really does sound rather bland. Those three tracks contribute to her other moods, and should be heard to round out the impression...particularly the very sad "I Listen To The Rain" and "Missing You", which are superbly written and performed tracks.

The second album has fairly good representation, with the strong "Love Scenes" worth hearing in particular, but missing out one of it's other highlights, which was "Look No Further" - again, another chance to hear Beverley's personal take on relationships rather than the usual romantic lyrics. It would have been interesting to include her cover of Abba's "The Winner Takes it All" as well, as this track polarised opinions: some listeners hated it with a passion, while others applauded it's unusual style. As for the third album, I have not got it so I can't comment on its missing tracks. But as it stands, you won't know how good some of Beverley Craven's other songs are if you just buy this compilation.

4 out of 5 stars Tries to do too much, but succeeds in doing a lot.......2004-12-30

Putting the musical contributions of African-Americans into perspective is a daunting task, but at the close of the century, a group of execs at Universal decided they should do it. Fortunately they chose to take ten full CDs and a long essay, complete with photos and historical context, to tell the story, creating in the process a sort of 20th-century time capsule.

The collection focuses on popular vocal music, so jazz is largely ignored (though at least they didn't leave out Miles Davis or John Coltrane), and it condenses the first half of the century (1900 - 1945) into a single disc. But their choices for that disc are impeccable: Scott Joplin, Louis Armstong, Paul Robeson, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Robert Johnson, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, Nat "King" Cole, and more than a dozen other giants give props to a representative slice of Black artists.

None of the nine remaining CDs covers more than 8 years. But what years they were! The choices on these discs are generally as judicious as on the first disc, though with the greater space, a bit of dross slips in, particulary in CD 7 (Disco Inferno) and the last few discs, where a lack of time and perspective make it difficult to judge what really is of lasting value. But the first six are to die for, especially the soul sides (CDs 4 - 6). Almost without exception, the songs included are ones the performers are most famous for (and justly so).

Since there are 220 sides in all, however, there are dozens of performers and performances that you may have forgotten or never heard, and they flow together well. And the box is a great conversation-starter; what recordings would you have included or left out?

Only ten singers rate more than one cut: Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Brown, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye. A sprinkling of blues artists (among them B.B. King), rock (Jimi Hendrix), reggae (Bob Marley), pop (Michael Jackson), and rap (Public Enemy) round out the collection. Recent hits by the major stars of hip-hop and rap are well-covered.
