About the Artist
THE MUSICAL TRADITION OF THE MALLIK FAMILY GOES BACK TO THE LATE 18TH CENTURY,WHEN THE TWO BROTHERS RADHAKRISHNA AND KARTARAM, THE FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE TRADITION, ARRIVED AT THE COURT OF DARBHANGA IN THE NORTHEASTERN PART OF THE COUNTRY, NEAR THE NEPALESE BORDER, AFTER HAVING STUDIED FOR MORE TWENTY YEARS WITH BHUPAT KHAN, A DESCENDANT OF THE FAMOUS MUGAL COURT SINGER TAN SEN. THEY IMMEDIATLY MADE A NAME FOR THEMSELF BY AVERTING A PERIOD OF FAMINE AND SEVERE DROUGHT BY SINGING THE MEGH, THE MAGICAL RAGA OF RAIN, CREATING A HEAVY DOWNPOUR IMMEDIATLY. AS A REWARD, MAHARAJA MADHAV SINGH GRANTED THEM SEVERAL VILLAGES AND THE SURROUNDING LANDED PROPERTY, WHERE THE FAMILY RESIDES UNTIL THE PRESENT DAY. IT WAS AT THAT TIME THAT THEY ADOPTED THE TITLE "MALLIK" MEANING, "LANDOWNER'. EVER SINCE THEN, THE FAMILY FURNISHED THE CHIEF COURT MUSICIANS FOR MAHARAJAS OF DARBHANGA. AFTER THE ABOLITION OF THE ROYAL COURTS FOLLOWING THE INDIAN INDEPENDENCE IN 1947, THEY EMBARKED ON A PUBLIC CONCERT CAREER WHICH MADE THEM KNOWN ALL OVER INDIA, INCLUDING APPEARANCE IN MAJOR NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS AND NATIONWIDE BROADCASTS ON RADIO AND TELEVISION.

5 out of 5 stars The Gods of Dhrupad speak Khyal too.........2000-11-06

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the Malliks of Darbhanga sang Khyal too and with such awesome mastery and presicion as I have not seen elsewhere. I especially find their forceful but precise style very applealing. They are masters of Dhrupad and it shows in their massive, powerful style. Their vigorous vocals are especially refreshing when compared to many contemporary vocalists with no power in their vocal chords. Their taans are absolute marvels of rhythmic and tonal precision. It is an absolute delight to hear them do sargams and deliver the same note clusters in taans. The compositions they perform are also very special. Being Dhrupad singers, they sing the lyrics with absolute clarity. I consder it an honour just to hear them. No fan of Indian music can afford to miss their music.

5 out of 5 stars Perfectly paced ragas of Secret Colours.......2000-03-06

The Mallik Family is from Darbhanga, in Northeastern India near the Nepalese border. From the late 18th century they have built up an intricate, intensely percussive style of Dhurupad singing with a repertoire of ragas sung exclusively by their own family. They are also adept of other styles, and on this CD they sing in the Khyal tradition. There are two ragas presented on Secret Colours. The first, Rag Basant, is a raga for springtime; the second is a raga of marriage and merriment. The Mallik Family's style is relentlessly calling and responding (in that the roles of leader and follower are always shifting) between Bidur and Premkumar and the tablas of Anandkumar Malik. Sustained notes are neither singer's forte, but they will create long sustained passages by trading off on sustaining a single note creating an effect something like circular breathing in jazz. The Malliks really cook when they get into the faster sections where their rapid fire dual vocalisations and tablas reach a level of precision that is just astounding. One can listen to the perfectly paced ragas of Secret Colours over and over again finding new aspects to the vocals each time. David Dacks - December 20th 1999
