Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Window to the Andes is primarily an instrumental recording, featuring the now-expected quena (pan-pipes) and flutes along with an ensemble that plays bandurria, tipple, guitar, and bass. The trio of two Bolivians, Gonzalo Vargas and Jose Luis Reynolds, and Argentinean composer/producer Enrique Coria, while not strict traditionalists, play it pretty straight--with a few nods to modern technique and arrangement, enhancing the heritage of the music. Window to the Andes is just that, a glimpse into the magic of the Andes mountains (and culture) where music plays a vital role in Andean daily life. Stretching from Cape Horn almost to Panama, the Andes have seen many cultures and conquering races come and go - over thousands of years. Home to some of the highest mountain peaks on Earth, the mountains have proven magical, even mystical, to any who are lucky enough to witness them. Long regarded by the people as Gods, or Apus, the mountain spirits believed to dwell within these peaks occupy a very important place among the many Gods worshiped. And, like these spiritually and physically immortal mountains, the music has also proven to be indomitable, and ever-present.

The beauty and contrasts of the Andes, from bare highlands to lush valleys to thick jungles, is mirrored in the music. I bought this album, after listening to Inkuyo's previous work "Land of the Incas", and as of then, this music has captivated me. It is not drole or banal, but the type of music that you can play over and over and still enjoy it for what it is. I think of all the history behind the music and that makes me want to listen to it much more. The musicians are extremely talented to reach such complex melodies and still keep the listener waiting for the next note. Kudos!

Inkuyo continues providing excellence. They are easily the best Andes group today. Window into the Andes is a bit more experimental than the others, but stays 100% within the tradition of Andes music. Every track is rich and moving, an outstanding work! If you like Andes music, BUY THIS!

Dowland's lute works are among the most beautiful compositions of the Renaissance period. Because so many of his pieces are wistful and sad, he was known as "the melancholy Dowland," although McFarlane's selection offers a fair number of more cheerful pieces. These performances are extremely stylish, alert and expressive in every moment of the music. Paul O'Dette's Dowland recordings for Harmonia Mundi are also very well played and include all of the composer's music on five discs. For a single-disc introduction to the composer, this Dorian CD is ideal. Dowland fanatics will need O'Dette's series, and perhaps McFarlane's also. Superb single volume collection of John Dowland's lute music.......2005-12-15

I first heard John Dowland's lute music many years ago as a classical guitar student, thought it, the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and the Spanish repertoire the cream of the music for the guitar - and still feel mostly that way. But it was awhile before I was able to find recordings of Dowland's music.

Ronn McFarlane's "Lute Music of Dowland" is a wonderful introduction to John Dowland's lute music. His playing is delightful, the digital recording itself captures his lute beautifully, and the CD offers 28 Dowland compositions, a number well known, some not, all performed stylishly in a way that captures your attention from the very beginning, to the end, of the CD.

Dowland's music represents the very peak of Elizabethan lute music in late sixteenth centry England, a period which began with lutenist John Johnson, and whose music spread in popularity across Europe.

There is an unmistakable melancholy quality about Dowland's music, but it also contains numerous memorable pieces, such as Sir John Smith's Almaine, My Lady Hudson's Puffe, The Earl of Essex Galliard, Melancholy Galliard, Queen Elizabeth's Galliard, Lachrimae, The Frog Galliard etc,; some extraordinary passagework, and appeal that very much transcends time.

Ronn McFarlane's Dowland CD on the Dorian label, along with Jakob Lindberg's Dowland CD on BIS, are the two best single CD collections I know of Dowland's lute music, apart from Paul O'Dette's five volume collection of Dowland which the serious or compleat Dowland collector might prefer. (Julian Bream also offers Dowland on his lute recital CDs, but these include other composers.)

This one's a winner. The music of Dowland is eternal. The lute playing and recording here is peerless. The Amazon review is right on. I'm not such a lute fan, but I return to this CD often. I want more from lutenist Ronn McFarlane! Bravo to all involved here.

Promo says recorded by "Big Movie Orchestra" but it sounds more like a couple of synthesizers. The "strings" are OK but anything on brass or wind sounds AWFUL. Some tracks are not even on pitch. Seller would not refund, either - adding insult to injury! Now it's a handsome coaster for my desk!

As I'm mostly drawn to Celtic music with singing (Karen Matheson, etc.), I was surprised to find how fully satisfying this recording is - there is dancing and singing, and even flying in it!

The finest instrumental Celtic I've heard so far.

While I am sad that 1/3 of Helicon (Chris Norman, a flutist) is not on this CD, I am ecstatic that Bullock and Kolodner, the other 2/3, are expanding their roots. I was first introduced to Laura Risk at Helicon's annual Winter Solstice Concert in Baltimore a few years ago, and there was something very unique about her. Her playing wasn't fancy, it was just pure and from the heart. I am glad to see that Risk, Bullock, and Kolodner decided to release this magnificent album of mostly Irish music. Having not listened to this album for a while (I had begun to listen fiddlers like Natalie MacMaster, Ray Ellis etc.), I was amazed to hear the same Irish fiddle tunes arranged for a trio. It gives the music a whole different spin that is truly unique to Greenfire. For example, "The Cape Breton Fiddlers Welcome to Shetland," "Dinky's," and "Jackson's" are very popular fiddle tunes normally heard in Celidh-like settings, but here take on a whole different meaning without losing their raw energy. Although this is a celtic string ensemble, it is nothing like a chamber orchestra where things tend to drag some. This is 3 professional musicians who specialize in international music, and keep the tunes as pure as possible. "Sean Ryan's," and "Chief O'Neill's Favourite" are also popular tunes that the seasoned celtic listener will recognize. All in all, this is a magnificent recording, and I encourage you to not only buy this CD, but Bullock's and Kolodner's solo efforts as well. You will not be disappointed.

three great musicians...one great disc.......2000-11-11

This is a first rate recording by an excellent collection of musicians. The tunes vary greatly: from the rollicking sound of the set of reels and rants on the first track to the hauntingly spare and introspective "The Rolling Wave." Robin Bullock, Ken Kolodner and Laura Risk are each excellent musicians in their own right. Together on this recording they are magically enchanting. Mrs. Risk is one of the greatest fiddle players I've ever had the privilege of hearing. Her disc with Jacqueline Schwab (Celtic Dialogue) is a favorite of mine. This disc is just as impressive and fun to listen to. The track titled "First Light in the Mountains/The Open Road" is by itself more than worth the price of this disc. By the way...I also want to recommend Ken Kolodner's wonderful album "Walking Stones"--it is great too. This disc gets a high recommendation from me. I hope that you'll get a copy if you have the chance. There's plenty of great music here.

Highly Recommended.......2000-09-16

While at first wary of an all-string recording, I was quickly put at ease. The skill of the players and the mix of the instruments (guitar, cittern, piano, dulcimer, fiddle, and viola) makes listening to this recording rewarding. Many of Greenfire's tunes, particularly "The Cape Breton Fiddlers' Welcome to Shetland" and "Over the Moor to Maggie" are on my "Fiddle Tunes to Learn" list. Get this!

An Elizabethan ragtime.......1999-07-22

If the etymology of "Dorian" is "of gold," that is the metal of the medal that should be awarded this company for yet another Renaissance winner! Prompted by the success of the films "Shakespeare in Love" and "Elizabeth," Dorian added to their superb catalogue two stunning vocal collections titled (DOR-90015) and (DOR-9052), giving us between them 53 tracks of the vocal and instrumental music of the day. So when I saw Dorian's latest release, (DOR-93182), I thought: uh oh, they're pushing their luck. As it turns out they pushed my luck. I love it. Here a group that calls itself Les Witches (violin, recorder, lute, and harpsichord) treats us to 25 galliards, lute tunes, satyr dances, masque numbers and all those steps you keep hearing about in Shakespeare's plays--all played as if hot off the presses. And that is not a modern expression either. Most of these tunes were circulated among the public with words; but this group wisely chose to select music that was heard upon the stage "in order to turn this old repertoire into a lively entertainment." I am not quite sure what that last sentence from the essay in the booklet means, but the results speak for themselves. In fact, try an experiment. Put this CD into one slot on a multi-tray player and one of the Dorian ragtime CDs in another. Then program them to play the tracks alternately. The result will be quite revealing...especially for those who think that human nature changes.

Laurie Z.'s first solo album is a fascinating study of both her earlier compositions and the keyboard technology that was available in the late 80's. The CD opens with the buoyant and somewhat-funky "The Explorer" - upbeat and fun! "A Reflection of Ourselves" is amazing - I couldn't believe it when I learned that the guitar is actually synth - a feat accomplished by great sampling AND keeping the playing within a guitar's realistic tonal range. Technical aspects aside, this is a beautiful piece! "It's a Jungle In Here" is also a lot of fun with a catchy percussion track and a great combination of synth voices. The title track is a real favorite - a sweet little intro breaks into toe-tapping rhythm and a terrific melody that combines rock and funk elements. I also love "City Lights" - an R&B/jazz number that is mind-blowing from the fact that one woman did all of the sounds on synth - a little red-headed soul! Laurie Z. is one of my favorite artists, and this first CD is a very important part of her musical evolution. Highly recommended!

Smooth and jazzy.......1998-12-19

"Window To The World", Laurie Z.'s first solo effort, immediately captures your attention with "The Explorer". It uses a steady beat with nice, varying instrumentation. It's a smooth and jazzy start, not a blaring, knock-your-socks-off start. As the album progresses, the listener is treated to some great acoustic piano and guitar sounds, with great intertwining harmonies (seemingly not easy to do). There are orchestral strains, nice tunes, and you take a journey over the country side in "Summerland".

But by the fifth cut, there was a kind of sameness to all the songs up through that point. By then, I found myself looking for more. I could see a great progression from this album to "Life Between The Lines", Laurie Z.'s later work which is also available on this site. I was looking forward to hearing another of Laurie's albums.

Then the sixth and title cut came on, and right off the bat, you could tell it was something different. "Window To The World" is a great name for this one, because it's as if it were the artist's emergence from the previous sameness. The rest of the album shows off her stuff. "City Lights" has a great beat with more variety. It's much looser than the previous songs, and has some great organ in it. You can't sit still to this one.

Other tracks show off some great dissonant harmonies and a playful tune. But the big finale is "Promise To Forever". This is simply a gorgeous work with great string bass sound.

Although I think the later album overall is better, this one is certainly a keeper, too. If you like great music, you'll love "Window To The World".
