My Fair Lady is--deservedly--one of the most famous musicals of all time. Its popular 1964 film version, directed by George Cukor, has ensured that for most people Audrey Hepburn is Eliza Doolittle, while Broadway-heads swear by Julie Andrews's stage performance, immortalized on the 1956 cast album. Of course, for the purposes of a CD review it's more accurate to compare the performances of Andrews and Marni Nixon, who sang the songs lip-synched by Hepburn in the movie. While Andrews usually comes out on top (especially on "I Could Have Danced All Night"), Nixon is no slouch (after all, she also dubbed Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King & I). Rex Harrison, of course, does his own vocals, but then he doesn't so much sing his songs as talk them. While Nixon and Harrison are tops, the truth is that Lerner and Loewe's songs are so good as to endure almost anybody's interpretation: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "With a Little Bit of Luck," "On the Street Where You Live," "Get Me to the Church on Time," and so on--not many shows can boast as many classics. I have seen this production as a movie, a television presentation, and on stage. All were great and all used the music with different voices. While I have many albums with different singers, this album remains my favorite. The music is precise. The singing is excellent. I thoroughly enjoy it every time I listen.

I am a die-hard Julie Andrews fan, so that already brings it down a notch. I also really like Audrey Hepburn and the fact that she didnt do her own singing makes it seem fake.
I ABSOULUTLEY HATE Marni Nixions voice on this album. her voice sounds flat and too american. Her cockney isnt the best , but i'll lay off of that because it is hard to do a good cockney if your are american.
I love Rex Harrison on both albums, he is so funny! I would have loved to see Julie Andrews and Rex together to witness the chemistry between them on the OBC, it would have been marvelous! GO BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST ALBUM!

Impressive technique, but missing Haydn's genial spirit.......2007-07-11

Almost all of Haydn's artistry is richly rewarding, and I encourage everyone with an interest in Classical music to acquaint themselves with his welcoming genius. Haydn's gift for lapidary musical invention seems nearly inexhaustable, and his piano sonatas are yet another genre where his creativity can be easily approached and enjoyed. I'm grateful to Marc-Andre Hamelin for recording these neglected sonatas with splendid panache, bringing them fresh to an appreciative audience. However, I sometimes feel that Haydn's music is performed skillfully, though without the breadth of humane sympathy it deserves, and I suspect that the full wealth of Haydn's craft is not quite arrayed, here. I won't find fault with Hamelin's talents as a pianist, which are brilliantly polished, nor do I mean to be glib with my critique, but I will say that stylistically, his renderings sound to my ears more like caffeinated Chopin rather than Franz Josef's neo-Classical poise, humor, zest and profound warmth. I first fell in love with Haydn's piano music through the performances of Bart van Oort (on Brilliant Classics) and John McCabe (on London/Decca). Unfortunately, these recordings seem to be available only as complete sets of the Haydn sonatas, which would be too great an investment for most listeners. A relatively inexpensive introduction to the abundant pleasures of Haydn's piano pieces can be found through the recordings of Alfred Brendel, such as this album available here on Amazon. Where's the fire?.......2007-06-23

Marc-Andre Hamelin's twofer of Haydn piano sonatas details most of the master's later sonatas in stylisitic performances that sometimes get a bit too dramatic and use too much pedal. Hamelin is a world-class player recorded well here who has some affinity for this music. My principal question when listening to these is, "Where's the fire?" Hamelin uses tempo more attuned to the keyboard music of Antonio Vivaldi, had he written any, than the witty and relaxed Josef Haydn. For all his fine quailties, Hamelin simply plays too fast too often, as if he's trying to set some sort of world speed record.

I recommend anyone looking to invest in a two-CD set of Hadyn sonatas to first sample the classic set by Alfred Brendel that's been around more than 20 years. He is more mature and more temperate playing than what's provided by this viruoso. Brendel is expert in this repertoire and always adheres to Haydn's style and temperament. Some other famous players have done well with these sonatas, also. Sviatoslav Richter loved Haydn and recorded many of the sonatas on concert and studio recordings over his career. Virtuoso colorist keyboard virtuoso Mikhail Pletnev recorded a handful of the sonatas including one of the best versions of the "English" sonata ever recorded. Try his recordings on Virgin and compare them to Hamelin, who is a fine player but is intemperate.

The Fastest Haydn Sonatas Ever Recorded in the Guiness Book of Records.......2007-06-19

I've to second AllOverWith's review of Hamelin's Haydn and I have nothing much to add that has not been said.

Four positive, five-star reviews had prompted me to listen again - just to the entire first-movement of the last C major Sonata. I thought I could be wrong - that there could still be something that I could savour from the recording. Maybe something that I've not expected.

At such breakneck speed, I thought I was just treated to a whirlwind of notes, smacked together in a fraction of a second; it made little sense to my mind's ear, even less so to speak of a nuanced interpretation.

If the whole point of this other set of Haydn sonatas in the market is to prove something that prior recordings haven't, Hamelin has certainly done it - purely in terms of speed. If anything else there's probably little that has not been already said.

Initially I gave five out of five stars unintentionally and wanted to leave it as it is, but thought it would be construed as either contrary to my views or an overly deliberate attempt at sarcasm.

So I gave two stars for the interpretation and an additional star for those who value pyrotechnics and how fast these pieces could go.

Evocative of absolutely nothing save Hamelin's fingers........2007-06-18

Okay, time to bring the hyperbole down a notch. It seems that no matter what Hamelin does he's lauded to the skies, which strikes me as a fair assessment of the soullessness of the age. Look at the guy -- he's an accountant! And this is not piano playing, it's note-tabulating. These performances of the Haydn piano sonatas feel like butterflies pinned to a board of cork. Facile technique for the sake of facile technique. Sometimes that can work, like in the Medtner sonatas, where just playing the notes correctly will suffice -- since no one else can do it -- but here, in Haydn, it feels almost contemptuous. Hamelin seems to take on faith that there is no depth, nothing of importance to be found in these pages, that these are antiques that he's only dusting off to show how his nimble sausage-fingers can make ANYTHING interesting. Wrong.

Haydn was well known for having a story in mind for almost every piece he wrote. His sonatas are far from all-purpose baroque filigree like Scarlatti; they are miniature dramas. Though we'll never know those stories, what's important is that the impression be given of Haydn's personality ( a doddering yet youthful-spirited old man, occasionally getting mildly excited by memories, then becoming mildly depressed at his current situation, but remaining generally optimistic. ) I defy you to find anything less personal than the impression Hamelin gives on this CD. He literally sucks the breath out of these pieces, vampirizes them, reduces them to "sewing-machine music," to quote Gould on Bach. The arrogance with which he jumps from Scriabinite tripe to Haydn as if it's all the same to him, as if he doesn't even have to make the effort to immerse himself in an entirely different mindset, is off-putting in the extreme.

You can't take a bullet train if you want to see the countryside, and Ronald Brautigam on BIS gets so much more out of this music that it's ludicrous to even compare the two. This thing puts me to sleep.

Hamelin Does it Again!.......2007-06-18

Marc-Andre Hamelin is, arguably, the finest pianist performing today. His choice of repertoire is unfailingly interesting. This CD, as many other reviewers have indicated, might seem to be a surprise at first - Hamelin and Haydn? - yet this apparent difficulty resolves itself easily. Haydn was one of the giants of music. His influence on Beethoven is profound. He continued to grow as a musician and composer right up until he died. His piano sonatas are unfairly overshadowed by Mozart's essays in the form. Yet, I would agree with the late Glenn Gould that Haydn writes more effectively and interestingly for the instrument. Unlike Mozart, who was considered a virtuoso and had something to lose by learning from a rival, Haydn did not hesitate to learn from the new virtuosity that Clementi was bringing to the instrument and a number of these (especially the later sonatas) are brusing knuckle dusters. It is ironic that nothing I have heard from Hamelin in years displays his exceptional gifts so well as these CDs of Haydn sonatas. The clarity, brio, precision and taste are extraordinary. These are the finest recordings of Haydn sonatas that I have ever heard. And this is a superior value. Hyperion has given you two CDs for the price of one. I hope that Mr. Hamelin records more Haydn. Buy this, you will not be sorry.

Still getting better.......2007-07-01

Andre has put out another high-quality CD that should only boost his stock. This CD is a wonderful listen with a lot of mellow tunes, and if you see him live, this CD will at least match your expectations from his shows.

The mellow tunes are headlined by "Andre's Theme", "New Orleans Lights" and "More Than Friends", the last of which has quickly become a favorite of mine. "When You're Alone" is also right up there, and "I Don't Want to Be In Love" also has a nice feel to it.

He picks up the pace nicely with a couple of songs, notably "Chicago (Here We Go)" and the final track, "When the Nighttime Comes".

All in all, this CD is a very worthy addition to your collection, just like his prior CDs.

Andre Ward has taken his smooth saxophone sounds to the next level. I imagine as an artist you're always trying to improve your craft in a way that is meaningful. I would have to say not only has this been done but the standard has just been raised. There's something here for every listening taste without compromising. Not one day has gone by that I have not listened to this cd over and over again. My hope is that people reading THIS review will give this project a chance. You will not be disappointed in any way, shape or form. There's a song for people who enjoy stepping...Chicago Here We Go. There are wonderful vocals as well. Marc Nelson formerly of AZ Yet sings beautifully on I Don't Want to Be In Love. I absolutely love the vocalists on Wishful Thinking and More Than Friends. Instrumentally...Abstract is bananas. It's not like anything I've ever heard and I absolutely love it. New Orleans Lights gives me a chance to remember a time when that city was at its bold, bright and most beautiful best. The title cut Crystal City is absolutely beautiful and I fell in love with Andre's Theme long before the cd had officially been released. If you're looking for something fresh and innovative. A cd that you'll never grow tired of listening to, Crystal City is the one for you.

Andre ward's cd crystal city is a very well put together cd. Like the master grover washington,marion meadows and my favorite the late great george howard... andre has carved out his own voice among saxophonists. With this cd he plays the ewi on chicago{here we go}.Which is a steppers jam bringing to mind everette harp on that tune. Very nicely produced by yasha and orpheus records

Point of Information.......2007-07-06

Folks, please read the recording data! This album does not present merely the "older Sills" of 1975. Tracks 10 to 13 were recorded in February 1961, when Sills was about three months shy of 32 years old. To hear her any younger on disc, you have to go to her splendid recording of *The Ballad of Baby Doe*, released in 1959. (If anyone knows of still earlier recordings, please holler!) So these 1961 tracks alone make the album priceless, especially since it offers vastly better sound than the slightly boomy acoustic of *Baby Doe*.

For me, the initial main attraction here was the Granados, and it was a hallelujah moment when I spotted this CD in the bins almost 10 years ago. While this disc represents the commercial first release of the *Goyescas* selections, they received limited issue around December 1963 on a holiday-bonus LP ("The Sound of Genius 1963") from the Columbia Record Club.

That LP was my introduction to Sills, and it made me fall in love with her voice. It was always a special treat to play her vocal track for those who had no idea it existed and watch their astonishment as Beverly's voice floated through sonic space like the very nightingale she sings about. It is simply some of the loveliest, most haunting singing I've ever heard. To get two additional tracks from the same recordings sessions -- especially "Estrellita" -- was an unexpected blessing.

So get this CD for the last three tracks, if nothing else (track 10 is purely orchestral). They capture Sills at a magical moment. Even if you like nothing else on the disc (and I think you'll like much more), you can claim these three special treasures for a mere pittance. Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music.Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

Life Is But A Dream..........2006-08-30

This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.

Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.

As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!

It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...

If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...

This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.

If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too.

An excellent introduction to Debussy and French music.......2005-06-30

Compilation CD's like this are an excellent first CD to purchase when first exploring a new composer or style of music ("Expressionism" in Debussy's case). And this Philip's "Set your Life to Music" collection is usually a sure and safe way to do that given their well thought-out selections, themes and quality recordings. This CD here contains many of the most popular, lyrical and enchanting works of the 19th-century French composer, Claude Debussy. The range of selections are diverse and satisfying: from his major solo piano works through his top chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) to the full-blown orchestral selections of great imagery and dreaminess that can transport one into another world of great serenity. (But, there are enough sudden changes in loudness and rhythm to upset any notions of perfect bliss and keep the daydreamer from falling asleep - hence the title, "for Daydreams" and not "for Bedtime" like in other offerings in this Philips' series) Regardless, this CD is an excellent introduction to Claude Debussy as well as being overall relaxing music to enrich one's life.

One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.

Dream and Classical music are magic.......2005-02-16

This CD is one of the best among its classical collections. (bach for breakfast is my one of them) It puts me to any place I dream of whenever I listen to this cd. It usually brings me into outer space, or sometimes go to the sky or under the sea. You can also just sit back and relax while listening to the music. In addition, once I get mad or not calm enough, I just put this cd on and it cures my anger.
Classical music is magic.

This is the one to buy!.......2007-06-13

A number of years ago, I went to the Classical Record Store in Toronto to acquire a copy of Rachmaninov's Piano Concertos. Like many others, I'd been introduced to Rachmaninov's 3rd Piano Concerto by the movie "Shine". When I asked the resident musicologist for Rach 3, she rolled her eyes. I explained that I wasn't remotely interested in the commercial David Helfgott version. I wanted the definitive version. She smiled knowingly and took me to a shelf. This is the version she handed me. Buy it. You won't be disappointed! Ashkenazy is at the peak of his powers and Previn does a phenomenal job with the London Symphony. It doesn't get any better than this.

An easy first choice.......2006-06-12

If you are looking for a standard stereo recording of the four concertoes, you don't have to look hard to realize that this set would be a nice and easy choice. Ashkenazy's performances of the Rachmaninov concertos are poetic, full of passions and yearnings, and technically excellent. This 2CD set is sold at the price of one full-priced CD, so it should be a good bargain. If you are a newcomer to Rachmaninov, this set is highly recommended. Later on when you have become familiar with these concertos you might also want to check out the renditions by Argerich and Horowitz, both of which contain some of the most spectacular displays of keyboard fireworks. These recordings by Ashkenazy have been reissued many times and the most recent one I believe is the 2 separate disks in the Eloquence series. Sonically the Eloquence reissues were artificially reprocessed in order to create wider dynamics and better sense of immediacy. Get either this one or the other, it doesn't matter which, what matters is that every Rachmaninov lover should have these recordings as basic items in his/her collection.

The champion of Rachmaninov's music........2005-12-25

This is a very good set of Rachmaninov's piano works for a very reasonable price indeed. For those who are unfamiliar with the great russian composer's piano works, from the blazing horns, swelling piano chords and seductive strings opening the first piano concerto you feel right away you're in for a very special musical experience.

Normally, when you know and appreciate what a musician has created throughout his career, there's almost always one piece of work that stands out or that you like more than the others. When it comes to Rachmaninov's piano works, mine would certainly be the Piano Concerto no 3, one of the most beautiful piano works that were ever written, and also the Concerto no 4. There's a certain nostalgia about this latter work, like feelings about a past gone forever, and you can feel this leitmotiv during the whole concerto. Maybe the fact that Rachmaninov wrote this wonderful concerto after having moved permanently to the US and therefore feeling homesick has something to do with it.

As for Mr Ashkenazy, he simply is the best interpreter when it comes to Rachmaninov's piano works. The great Vladimir is temperate rather than romantic, cool and constantly in control: sometimes he seems pouring out rivers of emotions and passion without getting carried away though. He has the musicality and intelligence to understand exactly how these concertos work. He has phenomenal technique, original approach, and his touch is quite fiery at times, gentle and tender at others. He can be poetic and passionate when he needs to.

In Rachmaninov's piano concertos the orchestra plays a vital role, often playing the main theme melodies while the piano accompanies, which is rather unusual. In this regard, the London Symphonic Orchestra and conductor A. Prévin are one of the best. Couple this with Rachmaninov's music and Ashkenazy's interpretation, and you're in for a very special musical treat indeed.

Thoughtful but passionate interpretations.......2005-07-09

After listening to a recording of Rachmaninoff's 2nd concerto and hearing a lot about the 3rd concerto, I jumped at buying this CD because of the low cost for two CDs - I was not disappointed.

For me the highlight by far is the third piano concerto, where Ashkenazy seems to pour out passion without getting carried away. This recording I much prefer to Argerich's recording (passionate, but little restraint and thought put into that performance) and even Horowitz's (although this may be because of it's worse sound quality). The first movement is played slower than most other performances, but is filled with passion and technical mastery. I am starting to learn this concerto and know how difficult it is! I was glad to see that Ashkenazy used the longer, chordal codenza rather than the shorter one used by Horowitz and Argerich (those are the only other recordings I've heard) with I much prefer.

The first and fourth concertos are also fabulously played but for me they don't compare to the third. The second concerto, however, was a little bit of a disappointment for me (not enough for me to give the discs 4 stars, however). Because I have already learned this concerto, I'm probably quicker to find faults with Ashkenazy's playing here. If I could put my finger on what I don't like about it it would be the balance between the piano and orchestra - you can hardly hear the piano at some of the most difficult sections. Still, the orchestra sounds beautiful and so does the piano when you can hear it.

Since listening to this disc Ashkenazy has quickly become one of my favorite pianists - as has Levine as a conductor. I would heartily recommend this CD for anyone, but especially for anyone who ever aspires to play any of these pieces - all four of the are beautiful and these performances are well thought-out and powerful.

Very good.......2005-03-18

These performances are wonderful, and to those who think otherwise, I do not really know another complete set that has performances as good as this. Ashkenazy is, as usual, amazing, and this particular set of the many Ashkenazy/Previn Rachmaninov Concertos sets is often called definitive. The sound quality is pretty good. Highly recommended.
By the way, Vladimir Ashkenazy holds the position of President of the Rachmaninov Society, which makes this set a no brainer.

It is hard to put into words how one feels about Andre Rieu DVD's enough to say that I have purchased all of them bar one .... at the Music Hall in the United States..... and this was only due to inavailablity. The Entertainment factor of all his DVD's are beyond ANYTHING I have ever purchased. All who visit my home and watch one of his DVD are mesmorised by the sheer pleasure this person brings and go out and purchase their copies.
For sheer pleasure, entertainment, and romance one needs not go further then Andre Rieu DVD.
I cannot recommend them highly enough.
I only have one criticism....and that is the he has not toured Australia.

Andre Rieu Collection (2CD).......2007-02-07

This recording has nice music that I enjoy, however when listening with the Sennheiser headphones to get a true depth of the sound, it is not there. It sounds flat and the orchestra does not sound any better than a non professional (high school, etc) orchestra. It may be fine for some lively outdoor concerts, but for a recording,in and out of studio location it fails. I would now reconsider purchasing any other recordings and I do have many.

If those responsible for making the recording would take the time needed for a professional recording, it would make for a vast improvement and to me this is just an attempt to get as many recordings out to the public. If you want to get people, who enjoy music, to return and buy additional recordings, make the recording you would want to hear again and again. After hearing this once, I will probably not listen to them again and go for some good orchestras.
