Let's see...a rap artist is hyped insufferably, his music is leaked incessantly, his album is delayed indefinitely, the hype grows, rinse, repeat. Welcome to the world of pop music in 2006, when "unauthorized" Internet seepage can somehow manage to simultaneously make and break an aspiring young performer. Lupe Fiasco's unfinished debut CD was slathered all over the Web for months, like some sort of Lonelygirl15, before finally seeing the legitimate light of day. That said, the Chicago-bred rapper, who rose to prominence thanks to his "Touch the Sky" collab with Kanye West, is hardly a slouch. His skittering, low-key rapping style is truly distinctive, and his lyrics are mostly thoughtful and creative without being heavy-handed. Despite frequent comparisons to "thinking man's rappers" from Tribe and De La Soul to Nas, the most apt comparison might be to Kanye West himself: Like West, Fiasco rises above the trappings of the street without sounding condescending or out of touch, and his sound has the same "timeless" quality--partly old-school, partly of the moment. Yet somehow, Food & Liquor isn't quite a home run either; it lacks fire and it cries out for an infectious track or two that really sticks. Still, Lupe distinguishes himself as an artist to watch. --Marc Greilsamer

Album Description

With Food & Liquor, Lupe Fiasco sets no boundaries for himself as he creates a revolutionary brand of alternative hip-hop in which he shares his mind through original storytelling techniques. He takes hip-hop off the streets and onto the half pipe, off the streets and into the sneaker shops, off the streets and into the hands and in front of real people.

5 out of 5 stars What a debut.......2007-06-24

First time I listened, I was just like "yeeeah, it's ok". But the more I listened the better it was. Dude has some sick lyrics, they just don't hit you at first. It's alot to take in.

This is the best debut I've heard in hip hop for a while.

5 out of 5 stars The Resurrection has come!!!!.......2007-06-20

Lupe is the truth... the love for lyrics has emerged once again. A mixture of a monster but not mainstream mechanical compared to the majority of the artists that are broadcast.

Though he bought the revenge of the NERDS he is no simp to the pimp of the pen... listen to a track if you dont believe me. Everyone thought they had him figured out with Kick, Push... it's not just about skating (a killa track with multiple meanings) but many people in life can't get past the glass wall.

If you happen to own or buy this CD check out the pics inside...its creative and funny like a strip off of the Chapelle Show or something.

Every track bangs your mind, dont get left behind but it will take numerous time to decipher what the message is and still many dont know what's going on in that head of Lupe's, you never learn all of the magicians tricks from one show I can't wait for the next L.P.

2 the tracks:
1. Intro (sets the tone for the c.d... voice of jill scott)
2. Real: 5 stars (I needed something real. How about you?)
3. Just Might Be O.K.: 5 stars (...the rhymes is phat)
4. Kick, Push: 5+ stars (Listen closely things aren't always what they seem)
5. I Gotcha: 5 stars (anotha song stating his realNESS)
6. The Instrumental: 4 stars (2 words: The box!!!)
7. He Say She Say: 3 stars
8. Sunshine: 5 stars (Common had a similar song on Resurrection " I Used 2 Love H.E.R.--- check it out a song made in the 90's but more relevant today.)
9. Daydreamin feat. Jill Scott: 5 stars (Great song with a good sample from Dave Mackay... used in a commericial, the usual: hip-hop being raped for dividends for the corpoartion.)
10. The Cool: 5 stars (Great lyrics over a nice beat... I believe the song may be in reference 2 Lupe himself and his process of evolution past the "The Cool" ???
11. Hurt Me Soul: 5+ stars (Thug psychology and misogyny...Lupe is killing it)Check out the line in refrence to prostitue products of the media..LOL
12. Pressure feat. Jay-Z: 5 stars ( "They say oil and water dont mix, but they all at the beach washing off the fish") Lupe outdid Hova.
13. American Terrorist: 4 stars
14. The Emperor's Soundtrack: 4 stars
15. Kick, Push II: 3 stars: ( It's good just can't beat the Kick, Push 1)

5 out of 5 stars Love Love Loving It.......2007-06-06

Not much of a hip hop fan, nor am I fully versed in the old school stuff that many people feel cannot be touched let alone immitated. So honestly my review here is based off of how this album is alone, not compared to similar stuff done in the past. I love how this album isn't so gangsta, so rough and full of materialism. I love how the songs deal with love, skating, school, and fatherhood type stuff. This is an album that the world needs right now in these violent times, we need to all just chill, be around friends and family and let this one rock. The beats are banging, Lupe Fiasco obviously is not only talented, but I can feel his ambition and work shine through his tracks. This may be one of the very first hip hop albums that ever spoke to me personally and I'm guessing that if your ready for something more "out of the hood" and more "down to earth" give this disc a spin.

2 out of 5 stars go talk to Capital D, then show me what ya know..........2007-06-04

Perhaps I shouldn't open my review (esp. since it's my first) with a qualification, but I must admit to only getting through this album twice, then reducing its rotation in my ipod to Daydreamin'. It's just TOO MUCH. Where to start?
This guy is evidently intelligent; his lyrics prove he's not just interested in whips n bling, etc. But for the most part they are a downer and are fairly inaccessible (read: boring) to this listener.
As for the production, it's as slick and radio-ready as all Kanye West/Jay-Z cuts. And it's all been done before, and better, just not all at once (on each and every song). (Listen to Common's I Am Music and Guru's Plenty for better versions of Daydreamin.') He shows with this album that he's learned all the tricks in the book, but he doesn't yet know how to use them sparingly to elicit a proper emotional response. True artists know the beauty and strength that comes from restraint and sparsity, but they also come correctly with booty-shakin' beats where appropriate.
He's a Chicago boy; perhaps he might go back to his roots and study the subtle perfection of Capital D & The Molemen's Writer's Block (the movie) (one of the best hip-hop concept albums ever, along with Deltron 3030) or the raw power of Capital D's Insomnia, a relevant and angry indictment of our administration and the ignorance of the masses (Mos Def's True Magic ain't bad in that regard, either).
To those whose only point of reference is Top 40's interpretation of "hip-hop," this album probably does deserve the ratings they've posted. Not terrible, but they should know there's better, more mature stuff out there.
BTW, this review is a delayed response to the question, "What about Lupe Fiasco?" that Main Flow (whose work is tops - check him out, too) asked me as we pushed our kids on the swingset at Mission Bay Park. Hope he and his family are doing well...

4 out of 5 stars KICK PUSHED INTO THE CHARTS FOR A REASON.......2007-05-28

Chicago's latest hot shot, Lupe Fiasco, has finally released his debut, and it is proving worth the wait. Coming off the mass (if not truly underground) early success, of the first single, Kick, Push, Lupe has roped in Jay-Z as a producer, and he's crafted a great hip-hop album in a year littered with mediocre hip-hop albums. The first track off Food and Liquor, Real, sets the stage with the cry of, "my mamma said they're not used to having something real", and if music he's talking about, then he's giving them what they need. Great lyrics, great emotion, smart sampling, and a viewpoint often paired with alt-rock bands rather than hip-hop. Although some of the tracks ooze a Chicago feel, he has more in common with acts like The Pharcyde, Tribe, and De La Soul, than fellow Chicagoan, Kanye West. Lupe has tapped into a culture that effortlessly crosses all demos. That culture is a positive one, an embracing one, yet he doesn't shy away from harsh realities and harsher truths. Think less bling, and more skateboards, art, and culture.

The music of Food and Liquor is instantly enjoyable. A song like Daydreamin' (leaked ages ago), is still heaven on disc, Jill Scott's vocals are jaw dropping enough to make you forget the over-used sample. Even the mandatory collaboration with Pharrell sounds better than anything on Pharrell's own releases. Watching Lupe upstage Kanye at Lollapalooza (during Kanye's headlining set) was exactly why he's someone to watch. He demands attention without asking for it. Its more about the story and less about the storyteller. The sampling as I said before, is very smart, whether its Burt Bachrach (He Say She Say), or the horns of Humphrey's Overture (Just Might Be Ok), they all work, and give depth to Food and Liquor. A depth that is worth checking out

She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14

I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Black Dove.......2007-05-13

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-12-30

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

5 out of 5 stars FRIDA would be proud.......2006-10-20

Simply perfection. Each song will move you. I dont really even understand Spanish ( only simple conversational Spanish) and it strums my every emotion. I just LOVE it!

Product Description

Obsessed with fresh skateboards and unconcerned about what other emcees are about, Lupe Fiasco is on the leading frontier of hip-hop's progressive new school. Representing Chicago's West Side, the 24-year-old has been hailed a leader of the new generation of conscious rappers unconcerned with guns, gangs and its empty glamorization. You were likely first introduced to Lupe Fiasco upon hearing Just Blaze's addictive manipulation of Curtis Mayfield's horns from "Move On Up." Asked by Kanye West to anchor "Touch The Sky" (the 4th single from Ye's multi-platinum Late Registration), the Windy City's premier young rapper has since become one of the most buzzworthy emcees in hip-hop. Originally signed to Atlantic Records in 2004 after negotiations with Def Jam fell though, Lupe is nonetheless slated to release his major label debut alongside executiveproducer Jay-Z when he drops Food & Liquor later this year.

4 out of 5 stars His Flow..........2006-09-17

When I heard him on this rhymin off Dead Presidents I agreed with my friend in that he is the best MC since Jay to spit to that. His flows are really dope to hear and his lyrics/punchlines are insane. For a such a young dude he has a lot of talent. I hope he keeps makin ill mixtapes.

lupe lives up to his good standards and can rap better than alot of artist out threr 5 star lupp keep up the good work

3 out of 5 stars FYI.......2006-05-27

Um, all this is some kid who took 3 of Lupe's free online mixtapes and took a few of his favorites from each. I can make you a "Touch The Sky" mixtape, too - or you could just make your own after searching out the ROTN, Fahrenheit 1/15, and A Rhyming Ape mixtapes, all of which Lupe has put online for free. Then again, if you're lazy, just pay the 7 or 8 bucks I guess. Anyway, Lupe gets 5 stars, this mixtape gets 3 for being a not-so-clever attempt at making money by one of these lame GFX heads you see on hip hop boards who Adobe their lives away.

        5 out of 5 stars It's Jill...need I say more?.......2007-01-31

Jill Scott, consistent from start to finish, never fails to satisfy. It's no secret that Jill writes and delivers a song with equal intensity, however, we had no clue how well she could collaborate with industry greats, not only holding her own, but often outshining music's seasoned veterans. Who is Jill Scott? If the answer to that question has not been clearly answered by The Experience and Beautifully Human, one listen to Collaborations will clarify Jill Scott as the last of the real deal entertainers, no gimmicks, no distracting stage shows or music videos, fully clothed, confident and intelligent, her talent alone speaks for itself. She is the role model that our little girls should see. I guess she proves that there is no need for bling bling, when you can sing sing. And if it wasn't enough to get Ms. Scott doing her thing with the likes of the Isley Brothers, Al Jarreau, Mos Def and Common, this Limited Edition, 2 CD Set, contains bonus material boasting a live performance from the Roots, the original demo recording of You Got Me and sample songs showcasing Hidden Beach Record talent. With so many artist putting out mediocre 1-hit discs, you simply can't go wrong with this one. BUY THIS CD!!!

        5 out of 5 stars This is a CAN'T MISS!.......2007-03-10

Mongo and La Lupe are smokin' hot insane on this CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars HOT! HOT! HOT!.......2005-09-01

la lupe is a great exotic singer adding rhythm and sabor to the music of mongo santamaria. I'm gonna dare to say that this collaboration was better than the one la lupe did with tito puente.

        OYE ESTE GUAGUANCO!

5 out of 5 stars mongo at his very best.......2003-02-05

This is Mongo at his very best: lyrical, deep and compelling; hip and sexy; richly textured and complex yet easily accessible. I love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Mongo Santamaria exalted by LaLupe.......2000-06-04

Mongo Santamaria is already an essential in the afro-cuban music collector's library. If you're lucky enough to come across his recording with vocalist LaLupe, buy it! Their collaboration is perfect pleasure; ambient, lusty, completely joyous and at times, humorous!
