    5 out of 5 stars ýHighly Recommended!!!ý.......2003-04-05

My first cd that I had ever purchased by Los Munequitos de Matanzas was `Oyelos De Nuevo" and that cd although not directly Orisha Spiritual music, that cd blew my mind. So being a Leo, and as Leos are we have to get everything, that a certain artist has. So I purchased this cd, and of course being an Aborisha, a devotee to the Orisha Spiritual tradition, I was pleased to hear traditional and folkloric Afro-Cuban Santeria toques, batas, and cantos. My favorite track always seams to be the ones for Chango, and of course the one for Oggun. Which is a mix of Lukumi Chants mixed with some Spanish words. This cd, is just beautiful, and I highly have to recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars EXPLOSIVE!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-27

This is an explosive cd full of music that will truely regenerate and energize you. It will take you to places you.ve never gone before. Experience natural rhythms and pay homage to the orishas as they would like you to do. ENJOY FOR I HAVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO!

Los Muñequitos de Matanzas continually put out amazing albums, and this one has to be one of their most unique and most exciting. Ordinarily, GOOD Orisha songs are hard to find - this album not only has incredible batá drumming, but the vocalists harmonize beautifully (a real rarity.) The first time I heard this album I got chills on my arms, indeed the Orishas are praised with this moving album.

      Album Description

Recorded in Matanzas in 1957, these ritual rhythms provide a direct link to the music of 19th-century colonial Cuba, and provide a window into the religious life of the first generations of Africans who worked the sugar mills. Collected by Lydia Cabrera and Josefina Tarafa, these recordings preserve extremely rare bembé lukumi ritual drumming used by practitioners of Santería to summon the gods or salute Cuba's African nations. It is remarkably different from the urban style heard today in Havana, although some of the same songs were sung in both city and countryside. With origins in Yoruba religion in West Africa, this music reveals the roots of today's Afro-Cuban ceremonial practices. 32-page booklet, extensive notes, photos, 69 minutes

Pre-Castro Cuba was not only about cigars, rum, and tourism. Even more than today, the countryside was a haven for practitioners of African-derived religions. These marvelous field recordings are a treasure trove of rare and thrilling material and still sound remarkably clear and immediate. They were the work of Lydia Cabrera, an anthropologist and writer of Cuban birth and Parisian nurture. She began gathering examples of music from slave descendants during the 1950s, often accompanied by photographer Josefina Tarafa. Using Tarafa's portable tape recorder and with help from engineers who later transferred her finds onto fourteen discs, this intrepid woman captured indelible examples of religious drumming, chants, and songs from the Yoruba, Angolese, and Dahomean traditions, back when the original languages and drumming styles were still relatively unadulterated. The accompanying booklet is chock-full of fascinating details and illustrated by examples of Tarafa's idiomatic black-and-white photographs. --Christina Roden

        Album Description

These recordings, made just a few years before Fidel Castro's rise to power, reflect Afro-Cuban musical and spiritual life in Havana and around the sugar cane mills of Matanzas. In 1957, Lydia Cabrera and Josefina Tarafa captured a fascinating snapshot of African slave-descendant communities performing their religious songs and ceremonies. Influences from present-day Nigeria, Angola, and Benin became some of the critical components of a vital religious movement in the Cuban countryside where linguistic, symbolic, and musical elements blended over time. As reflections of evolving practices, these recordings, are considered a soundtrack to Cabrera's writings on Afro-Cuban religions and are the perfect complement to volumes one and two.

5 out of 5 stars "Los Muñequitos de Matanzas"- Rumba Caliente- 88/77.......2007-03-14

A great compilation recorded by Cuba's foremost and internationally famous "guaguanco/rhumba" ensemble. The album has a great sound and features some of the groups original members who were not retired yet. The chorus and percussion are brilliant as is usual with this best loved group.
A must buy by lovers of this great and traditional Cuban music genre. I highly recommend it. Get it while its still available.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Rumba.......2000-09-13

Los Munequitos are the definitive source of modern rumba, with roots as an ensemble dating back to the 1950's (one of the founding members, Gregorio "Goyo" Alfonso, plays on this album) when they were called Conjunto Guaguanco Mantancero. Several songs on this record were composed by Florencio Calle, the musical director at that time. Speaking directly from the soul of the land, some of these songs will bring tears to your eyes, if you let them. But you will be dancing as well- the interplay of the drums in the hands of these complete masters of rumba invites you to be swept up in the tide of rhythm and emotion. The first six songs (recorded in 1988)are not optimally mixed, but listen to songs like "Parece Mentira" or "En Opuestas Regiones" for the rich tapestry of rural Cuban experience to unfold. This is what it sounds like when the community comes together to laugh, to sing, to drink and to dance. This is rumba. There are compositions like "Baba Cuello Mao" and "La Viola" (both recorded in 1977) that show how beautifully the African singing syle of call-and-response have been preserved and nurtured within the Cuban folkloric repetoire. Los Munequitos have given us a priceless gift once again.

            Album Description

Experience the power of Matanzas-style Orisha music as performed by Alfredo Calvo (one of the most knowledgeable and talented Afro-Cuban folkloric singers alive today) and his Aña Oba Tola. The CD also presents, for the first time, the incredible sound of the sacred Lukumi Bembe Makagua, which were made in the early 20th century as war drums for the Orisha Chango. The drums are hot and Alfredo's singing is amazing. A must have for all lovers of Orisha music!

The CD is structured around the presentation of a newly initiated priest of Chango, the warrior Orisha of thunder and lightening. In Havana and the United States, such a presentation is a rather cursory affair, but in Matanzas it is the way in which the new priest is presented to the community as well as the drums, and it is an elaborate event. The priest is dressed in the full satin regalia of his or her Orisha, ceremoniously brought out from his throne to be paraded before the community and then presented to the drums. Then the community joins in, singing and dancing as the akpon (lead singer) and the Aña drummers play praise songs to each of the main Orishas. To experience a presentation like this first-hand, please see Kabiosile's DVD "Vamos al Tambor: Presentations in Matanzas, Cuba," also available through Amazon.com.

In addition to the traditional Aña drumming and praise songs, this CD also includes a track of never-before-recorded Lukumi Bembe Makagua drums, which were made as war drums for Chango in the early 20th century. These drums, which are similar to Arara bembe drums, are upright (as opposed to the hourglass across-the-lap style of Aña and bata drums) and are played with sticks (and, in the case of the main drums, one hand and one stick). Alfredo Calvo was present at the birth of the Makagua drums. In recent years, he has created a drumming innovation of bringing in the Bembe drums to play along with the Aña, then switching the entire tambor to Bembe. The sound is unique and powerful. Whatever Orishas didn't come down to join the party before are sure to arrive as soon as the crowd and drums break into "Marele Okuo," which means "Something new has been born." It is an experience not to be missed (and Kabiosile is planning a new DVD to capture and share it with you)!

            5 out of 5 stars Perfect album........2004-04-10

If you're a fan of cuban folkloric music, you know los munequitos de matanzas, and have probably heard "congo yambumba" or "ritmo caliente 88/77." Those recordings were only a warm-up to this live blowout. Only an ensemble that has been playing together for 50 years, spanning several generations of players, could ever approach the airtight yet fluid musicianship that this group posesses.

The crowd is ecstatic as los munequitos glide effortlessly through rhythmic change-ups and dense overlapping patterns, and you can just imagine the dancers giving it the "sauce" as the music heats up...Dancing is an integral part of every los munequitos performance, as the rumba is something that exists between the musicians and the dancers, needing both to really come alive. No doubt it was this interplay on the live stage that made this recording so vibrant and special, going far beyond what could have resulted from a technical studio recording in terms of feeling and inspiration.

This is folkloric music, which means everyday people's music, not a museum piece...Los munequitos present us with a vibrant, evolving art form...You hear not only the traditional tumbadoras, quinto, clave & guagua but also bombo drums & brazilian agogo in a mozambique/rumba hearkening to the spirit of a street parade on "coros de clave" and hinted at again on "Lengua de obbara" with a brief quote from "Mais que nada" by Sergio Mendes(?).

Los munequitos are the standard-bearers of cuban rumba, and this is their best recording. If you never buy another rumba CD, get this one. Please.
