5 out of 5 stars Cass Elliot.......2007-05-17

I love this CD. She realy poured her heart into it. If you are a true Cass Elliot fan, you have to get this one. Cass's death was a great loss for all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Where ever in heaven you are...I Love You!.......2007-04-21

If you want to hear the voice of LOVE (Besides Karen Carpenter), listen to Cass Elliot. Cass makes me want to live and trully love! Just listen to her here. It is a shame we don't have her here with us alive, and we have to deal with no-talents like Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and her sister and Jennifer Lopez. What a travesty! Thank God her voice is forever recorded for God's sake!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is LOVE!!!.......2006-09-17

I wont lie. I've heard a few songs of Cass Elliot's growing up not knowing she sang them, & I've heard urban legends. It wasnt until I saw the movie "Beautiful Thing" (or what I call a love movie based around Cass Elliot music) that I found out more. So I did research. Then on my Birthday I looked up her CDs & after playing roulette, I settled on this one. I've blasted it ever since! I love the whole thing but here are my fav pics:

Don't call me Mama anymore (live): A wonderful song made to break her stereotype stage name. WONDERFUL!

California Earthquake: WOW! I love the ending

Lady Love: A WONDERFUL tribute to her daughter Owen Vanessa.

Make your own kind of music: Classic & true song about being you.

One way ticket: An anthem for many people wanting to break away & just...go out you know?

Disney Girls: MY FAV! Enough said there...

Dream a little dream of me: Classic again, one of, if not THE, well known song sung by Cass Elliot.

I'd say this is a good started CD because you get some Solo records, recordings with others & memoriable recordings. The CD booklet is full of lots of info & pictures (including one of mother & daughter) that will be a treat to listeners. I hope to get more Cass CDs soon! Enjoy peoples!

I LOVED IT!! WORTH EVERY PENNY.

5 out of 5 stars Almost an entire hour of Cass! WOWZER! .......2006-03-22

When your world's closing in
And there's no place to hide
And you're needin' a friend to be there
At your side
Send a message to me
I'll arrive and you'll see
Whether you're right or wrong
This is where you belong
Give it a try and you'll see

Move in a little closer baby
You've got to keep me closer baby
Come in a little closer baby
Together we can make it happen
Wait and see....

After she left The Mamas and The Papas, Cass Elliot became one of few solo artists to come out of the 60s and the 70s and STILL be well remembered today by people of all ages. Although her life was tragically cut short, she did not leave us before she entertained us with a mature vocal command of her songs that only a great singer could produce. Her vocal style always allowed the nuances of the lyrics to come through and this CD shows that clearly.

In essence, this is a fine compilation album. There are songs recorded live from her TV special/record album entitled "Don't Call Me Mama Anymore;" and there are two infectiously beautiful "bubblegum music" numbers entitled "Move In A Little Closer, Baby" and "It's Getting Better." Watch out, though, because Cass could sing folksy/bluesy songs including "Wild Women" (recorded here when she was with a group called The Big Three) and the rock style song called "California Earthquake." A most versatile singer, indeed!

I agree with other reviewers who write that it is extremely ironic that she came out with the song "I'm Coming To The Best Part Of My Life" so close to her untimely death. In addition, could it be that we are encouraged to remember Cass fondly by the placement of "Dream A Little Dream Of Me" as the last song on this CD? Perhaps so; but I for one don't need much encouragement.

In short, this CD is a great introduction to Cass Elliot's work and this is a good value if you're on a budget and want to choose just one Cass Elliot CD to start off with. (This CD is also good for fans of contemporary pop vocalists.) The credits are given for each song but there are no lyrics written. Instead of lyrics there are extensive liner notes by Jon E. Johnson. There are excellent photos of Cass, too. You can't escape the outrageous color photo of the bejeweled Cass reclining on a couch right on the front cover of the CD artwork! Another black and white photo of her naked but strategically covered by huge bunches of daisies is also terrific.

What else can I say? This album makes me rejoice that Cass shared her talent with us; it also makes me a bit sad that she died so young because had she lived this would only have been the beginning of decades of fine art. I say buy this CD and enjoy it many times over--you just won't be able to play it just once!

She wasn't the cute one, but, damn, she certainly could sing her ample rear off. Featuring only one track with the Mamas & the Papas--the hit "Words of Love"--this unfortunately titled collection spotlights Elliot's solo career, from the ancient Tin Pan Alley gem "Dream a Little Dream of Me" through Top 40 treats like "New World Comin'" and "Make Your Own Kind of Music" (recently covered by Paul Westerberg). Actually, only 5 of the 12 tracks can be considered big ones--but that voice was simply perfect pop and pure ear candy. Pity she left when she did. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars SHE LEFT US TOO SOON..DAMN!.......2007-05-07

Cass Elliot, alongside Karen Carpenter, Janis Joplin and Florence Ballard, are some of my favorite female singers who left us too damn soon.
Her voice is amazing, she had it all, but for god's sake, why did she had to die so young? Maybe God needed another angel? Simply beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love It!.......2007-02-18

Mama Cass has always been a favorite of mine and I believe that I had this LP in the 80's. It is just as good as I remember and my (relatively) untrained ear thinks the recording is just fine. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars MAMA'S BIG ONES: Merle Haggard Says, "Buy `Em.".......2006-10-06

Despite this collection's title, MAMA'S BIG ONES, which is obviously a double entendre and an invitation for every low class reviewer to crack a bunch of cheap MAmMAry gland jokes, I refuse to stoop that low. I will not succumb to the temptation because the music found here deserves better; it should not be subjected to rude remarks from some plebeian guttersnipe. I'm going to address it with civility and good taste because I'm a high-minded individual who never sacrifices a million dollar opportunity for a ten cent laugh. It's not like I'm a dog which is governed by instinct; I'm a man and I have self-control and the power to make choices. And I choose to keep this review principled. It's as simple as that!

"MAMA" CASS ELLIOT was, of course, a member of that fine Pop choral group of the late `60s and early `70s, The Mamas And The Papas. She was a part of team Mama, if memory serves me well. Mama Cass had limited vocal range but a "sweet" voice and she really knew how to put a song over, how to caress a melody. Ah yes, remember when music had melody? Several of the twelve songs on this compilation are culled from The Mamas And The Papas archives. How good were The Mamas And The Papas?...

From 1972 to 1986, I had a real good friend named Andy - as loyal a friend as I ever knew - but Andy was something of a character. He listened to NOTHING but Country-Western (unusual in L.A.) and I don't mean stuff like Dwight Yoakam and Garth Brooks - not THAT kind of Country! Heck, Andy couldn't stand those "longhaired hippies" Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson! No, I'm talkin' REAL hard-core Country-Western like The Sons Of The Pioneers and Hank Williams (the dead one!) Andy was certain that Merle "Okie From Muskogee" Haggard was god. His most famous saying was: "You know what Merle Haggard says...%#&! `em!"

Through the years I'd try to turn Andy onto some more contemporary music - try to get him into the 20th Century a little bit - but he was having none of it: "Check it out, Andy, these guys are good. They're called Thin Lizzy."

"You know what Merle Haggard says...%#&! `em!"

One night while we were cruisin' Mulholland Drive in his 1954 Chevy truck (Andy rebuilt the engine himself), I quietly slipped a Mamas And Papas Greatest Hits cassette into his player, afraid that Smith And Wesson's greatest hits would be playing next (Andy was usually armed and dangerous), but.....nothing. No gun, no "Merle Haggard says"...nothing. I left the tape in the truck when he dropped me off that night and faster than you can say, "I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee", Andy was a dyed-in-the-wool Mamas And Papas fan. Merle was still god, of course, but the Mamas and Papas were angels.

It was The Mamas And The Papas that finally brought Andy up-to-date: From there he discovered the very, very early, pre-disco Bee Gees, and then Loggins And Messina. One day in 1983, while quaffing Lone Star beer (you know what Merle Haggard says about the makers of Budweiser) and watching MTV, Andy showed no small amount of enthusiasm for a Journey song. That's when I knew that things had gone too far and I threatened to play him Samuel Colt's greatest hits next. But hey, if MAMA (and her band mates) could reform a lost cause like Andy, just think what she'll do for you!

There's not a song on MAMA'S BIG ONES that I don't like. And despte the comments from a couple of other reviewers, the sound quality on my copy is perfectly fine. (Maybe they got discs from a bad batch?) Aside from Mama's lovely voice and memorable melodies, there's some real sweet lyrics found here, too; words to live by. And none sweeter than those from DON'T LET THE GOOD LIFE PASS YOU BY:

Did you ever lie and listen to the rain fall?
Did you ever own a homemade apple pie?
Did you ever watch a child while he was praying?
Just don't let the good life pass you by
Did you ever hold a hand to stop its trembling?
Did you ever watch the sun desert the sky?
Did you ever hold a woman while she's sleeping?
Friend don't let the good life pass you by
Man was made for loving not for buying
Gold can't give the things we really need
Just look my friend there's happiness in living
Somewhere between broke and being free
Did you ever see the funny side of losin'?
Did you ever sit right down and have a cry?
Did you ever take the time to help your neighbor?
Just don't let the good life pass you by

In closing, let me just say that I have been enjoying this Mama Cass compilation for fourteen years and I'm sure that you too will find MAMA'S BIG ONES to be hugely entertaining. How huge?
Thirty-eight, Double D. Dang it! I almost made it. I got SO close!

3 out of 5 stars LOST brought her back into the spotlight.......2006-09-14

After her song "Make Your Own Kind of Music" was featured on the second season of LOST I couldn't get it out of my head. VERY talented woman. I'm only 25 but I already knew her from her dominant presence in Mamas and Papas but she continues to amaze me...

3 out of 5 stars Too bad Mama could not have lived on.......2005-11-27

This is great and time to feel upbeat CD by the one and only Mama Cass. These songs give you the kind of feeling that you just can't find in much of today's music. Like so many songs of the era, there is a kind of hope and happiness for the future even though things were not necessarily that great during that time with the Vietnam War and the social unrest. I have never felt that Mama Cass has received the recognition that she deserved, but obviously she does live in history or we would not have this compilation of her best. Of course, there is an obvious lack of the rest of the Mamas and Papas, but ole Mama did very well on her own. The obvious stand out of the CD is "Dream A Little Dream of Me" which definitely should be always listed as a classic song. This song shows the ability that she had and could have developed if only she would have had more time. Other notables are "Make You Own Kind Of Music", "The Good Times Are Coming", and "Ain't Nobody Else like You." So, you are probably asking why I am only giving this CD three stars. Well, it is good, but I am a hard reviewer and I cannot put this into the five star categories. That category only exists for what I consider the very best. This is a good CD, but obviously not the best. However, I am very glad I have it in my collection and you will too if you enjoy the upbeat and positive music of this golden era and the magic voice of Cass.

5 out of 5 stars A good overview of Cass' recordings........2007-05-19

What is great about this CD is that it has true rarities by Cass , as well as the hits that she's known for. Firstly, it does have a good overview of Cass' hit singles DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME, IT'S GETTING BETTER, MAKE YOUR OWN KIND OF MUSIC, NEW WORLD COMING, WORDS OF LOVE with The Mamas & The Papas and more. But what is great is the rare songs never on CD before like her 1972 RCA singles DOES ANYBODY LOVE YOU and [ IF YOU'RE GONNA ] BREAK ANOTHER HEART - 2 of my favorite Cass songs. Plus it has the unreleased EAST OF THE SUN WEST OF THE MOON , which is only found here. Plus, it has a few rare jingles that Cass did for Hardees in 1973. Also has songs from every solo album that Cass did, from 1968-1973.

It's not a complete career history , which would have to be at least 2 CD's. So, you don't get her early folk & bluesy numbers like WILD WOMEN or YOUNG GIRLS LAMENT with The Big Three from 1963, or The Mugwumps folk-rock from 1964. And of course it doesn't cover The Mamas & The Papas much, but then that's easily available & most fans own the group's recordings anyway. But it is essential for any Cass fan to have the rare tracks. The cover could have been a better photo, & the booklet is only 4 pages [ though the liner notes are good ], but the music is here & that's what matters.

4 out of 5 stars Mama Cass' Music.......2007-02-11

I had forgotten about Mama Cass' solo career and was excited when I came across this CD for sale. It is a tad monotonous as pretty much all the songs are love songs, but it's redemption is the great voice of Cass Elliott.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation .......2006-11-29

What a great voice! This is the best compilation of her music to date. As a bonus, it includes the previously unreleased song "East Of The Sun (And West Of The Moon)". Amazon, thank you for making this CD available to us in the USA!

5 out of 5 stars God Bless Cass.......2005-12-07

This is a blessing! Just buy it - the remastering is brilliant.
Until they re-release all her solo stuff - this is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The Essential Cass Elliot.......2005-05-24

God, she was good!! The sound on this disc is superb, and the selection of songs is excellent. The material sounds so fresh and new, it reminded me just how much I loved her music when I was first introduced to it 30+ years ago. It made me aware, again, of how much I miss her. A great sampling of her work!

1 out of 5 stars Poop n Stuff.......2006-07-08

For those of my generation who might be seeking a blast from the past, warm and fuzzy childhood nostolgia trip, don't bother!!! If it were possible to give this cd no stars, I would. There is only one song with Cass Elliot, that is marginal at best!! Save Your money for the DVD of the original series! Now I can see why I never saw this film, when it came out!!

3 out of 5 stars Original soundtrack altered.......2006-06-08

I was happy to recently discover that the soundtrack of the 1970 film "Pufnstuf" had been released on CD. I was a huge fan of the show as a kid, and this was the first soundtrack LP I ever bought. Purchasing the CD allowed me to relive a bit of my childhood, without the pops and clicks from the scratches on my old vinyl album.

But I'm a bit puzzled by the fact that this CD release has altered tracks. Most of the tracks include passages where a bar or two of the music has been looped, adding a few seconds of repeated music for no apparent reason. The result is jarring for anyone that is already familiar with the music, and seems quite unnecessary. I've written to El Records to ask why this was done. Legal reasons?

5 out of 5 stars AN ABSOLUTE "MUST" FOR FANS OF 70's TV, KROFFT, CASS, KITSCH AND TERRIFIC MUSIC!.......2006-03-27

You don't have to be a fan of the TV show "H.R. Pufnstuf" to appreciate this gem of an album, though fans of the series will enjoy it. It does not offer the catchy, peppy little ditties you heard on the TV show, but instead a rich, large, very 70's sound.

It's almost as if you're hearing the 70's careers of composer Charles Fox and lyricist Norman Gimbel in one sitting, because even though they had not yet written all of their signature theme yet, the styles and phrasing were already there in "Pufnstuf."

Just a few examples: the trumpet work in "Zap the World" is reminiscent of WONDER WOMAN; the lilting back-and-forth tone of "A Friend in You" is very much like THE LOVE BOAT; "Living Island" suggests LOVE AMERICAN STYLE; and the middle part of "If I Could" has elements of LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY.

The sound quality is very good, since the original vinyl album sounded pretty powerful to begin with, but I have a quibble with the producers of the CD because they decided to lengthen some of the tracks by repeating phrases. This is the case in "Living Island," "Witchiepoo's Lament," "Angel Raid," "How Lucky I Am," and "Charge." I'm sure their intentions were good, but it wasn't really necessary. However, the album is so good I gave it five stars for the being on CD at all.

Thanks very much to all who made this CD happen!

4 out of 5 stars Cass's real early good stuff!.......2005-08-29

Cass Elliot. Just the name itself can evoke such an image and time unlike any singer like her. To really appreciate Cass one must hear these early recordings of Cass to really hear her soar. What do I like about this recording? God-so many songs. My favorite's are Nora's Dove, I May Be Right, Silkie, Wild Women, All the Pretty Little Horses, Come Away Melinda, and Winken Blinken and Nod. Yes these are folk standards, but to hear Cass sing them along with Jim Hendricks and Tim Rose is well worth any price! If you are infactuated with the sound of Cass (Tim Rose called her the 'most talented person I knew in my life)- I strongly recommend you buy this album!

The lyrics are sooooooo haunting. I bought this CD, gosh, back in 1998 or 1999 and I still play it regularly. The other songs on this CD are show their age, what Rock was trying to be in 1963-64 (I really don't care for it). It's all loud and hodge-podge. Very dated. Makes you kinda glad Cass didn't go too deep down that path.

This CD is also extremely beneficial to me as a Cass lover, because it wasn't until I heard these sounds did I realize how much Cass could sing anything! Early in her career, it has been mentioned she could bring people to tears with her performances in NY and Washington D.C. These songs evoke the same emotion.

When you listen to Come Away Melinda, Silkie, All the Pretty Little Horses, Winken Blinken And Nod tears will well up in your eyes.

Cass had so much to fight against. She was overweight. She wasn't considered an 'ideal' beauty. She had to fight sexism and an all-male recording industry. I think many of us would have given up and backed down. But not Cass. She persevered. How she did it, is one of the most untold stories of our times. You can actually hear her spirit and uplifting attitude in such songs as Nora's Dove, Wild Women and I May Be Right.

We're going on over 40 years since these songs were recorded. There still so fresh to hear. The word 'fresh' explains so many of Cass Elliot's and the Mamas and Papas work. I hope one day someone will 'pick-up' where these great artist left of. I'm still waiting 40 years later!

In an age of image is everything, over-produced music and computer-enhanced singing-nothing is certain of the the 'true' artists we hear today.

Cass's songs still stand out for the exceptional quality they were 40 yrs ago. I've tried to find many substitutes to mirror that 'Cass' sound. No one even comes close. I will probably be wearing out Cass and M and P CD's until the day I die.

It's not to say I don't think there might be another Cass singer out there. But in an age of MTV, video killing the radio star, American Idol and when teen music rules- true stars like Cass may wander around the world, but I seriously wonder if mainstream media is prepared to showcase another Cass Elliot without worrying to much about image.

Today's singers must fit on another FOX or WB teen show, be a contestant killing another great song on American Idol while wondering what Simon thinks of him or her (who gives a F&*#!) or must barely wear anything in a MTV video (sorry Mariah Carey and Jessica Simpson-looking like a slut dosen't prove you can sing-sadly, music history will not judge you kindly).

So what makes Cass so great? Consider 60 percent of Americans are overweight. Consider Cass was more than a singer, she had thoughts, meanings, intelligence and a message. Consider Cass was about equal rights for woman. She didn't care that most folk singers were attractive like Joan Baez or Joni Mitchell or that male groups like the Kingston Trio and even former bandmate John Phillips percieved men in control of the music scene and if you were a female singer, you better look more like the beautiful Michelle Phillips (John has been reported to say he was more than eager to welcome Michelle to sing with him but felt Cass was 'not the right image or note he wanted for the group-pleazze John just say the truth, you didn't like her cuz she was fat!)

Well Cass proved them all wrong! History has looked kindly on her and poorly on all her foes. So many Cass Elliot projects are in the works. Joni Mitchell has said it best. She said she overheard a current record producer today say it dosen't matter if a person can't sing well-all that matters is that they look great and a team of producers, engineers, stylists and creative consultants will take care of the rest.

That gives you a lot of hope in the recording industry today dosen't it?

We have become a society slaved to image.

Hopefully, one day, someone will be able to pick up where the Mamas and Papas and Cass Elliot left of.

The world is waiting.

As Cass sings in 'I May Be Right'...

'Well I may be right
And I may be wrong
But you know, you're gonna miss me
When I'm gone
When I'm gone
When I'm gone.'

3 out of 5 stars Big 3 with Mama Cass a reflection of early 60's folk revival.......2005-07-24

If you like the early 60's folk style, you will enjoy this album. However, it is not as rich, as say, a Kingston trio album of the the same era. It has some unique arrangements of traditional songs. The orchestration is thin as are many of the genre of this era. Overall, I found it to be interesting, but not a real winner.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, edgy folk music.......2001-02-16

A wonderful group that deserved much more success, The Big 3 featured a young Cass Elliot, later of the Mamas and Papas, singing with a maturity and purity that was sometimes lost in her later work. The standout song, of course, is "Wild Women Don't Get the Blues", but it's not the only gem on this recording. The soft and gentle "Winken, Blinken, and Nod" is a personal favorite, and the haunting "Come Away, Melinda" is one of the very best and most artfully done of the anti-war genre. I think of it every time I see places like the former Yugoslavia on the news. Other songs on this album can set your teeth on edge with their raw, sexual energy. This last is a side of folk music not often explored by some of the more commercially successful groups -- remember, this was the early 1960's, when life still looked a lot like the 1950's. All together, this album is both an excellent representation of the 1960's folk scene and a window into folk groups who were doing things a little differently. It belongs in the collection of anyone who is interested in folk music, the roots of folk rock, or the three performers specifically. For Cass Elliot fans, it is greatly enhanced by excellent liner notes featuring interviews by everyone involved with this group during its too-brief existence.

Cass McCombs is one of the finest songwriters working in pop today. His songs have compelling dronepop melodies reminiscent of early `80s New Zealand indie-rock (the Chills, JPSE, etc.) while vocally he's capable of the whiney style one associates with "emo," but the boy can also croon like nobody's business when he wants to. There's a goofy whimsy to songs like "Bury Mary" that brings to mind Highway 61; other songs recall the moody, decadent pop of Echo and the Bunnymen's Crocodiles or the Cure's Seventeen Seconds. A lot more money was spent here than on his debut A, but the production's a little too muddy, as if he were trying for the Goth thing now that he's on 4AD and lives overseas. McCombs has yet to really paint his masterpiece, but he's a capital-A artiste worthy of full investigation. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars This needs to be investigated.......2005-05-29

So many cool and slick records have come out this year, so many large sweeping gestures, that you sometimes overlook more subtle statements. This record has been out a while but I am writing about it now because I think that I have overlooked it. It comes on slow and simple and at the end of the day it seems like a richer experience. This is some rich sensibility that was informed by Neil Young and Big Star. The record takes off on the second track "Subtraction" which sounds like The Walkmen playing folk music. The heavy rock of "Multiple Suns" is amazing and shocking really. "Tourist Woman" reminds me of early Wire. The lovely sounds of "She's Still Suffering" are very emotional and affect me deeply. This album evokes many moods and is a very full sound, and has surprises at every turn. Just amazing!

4 out of 5 stars One of the finest rock albums of the year..........2005-02-20

It seems the 4AD label hasnt ran out of ways to keep attracting listeners. Not even in these days of grand rock stagnation.
"Prefection" is an album hiding all kinds of lil and bigger gems in it, one that should be discovered allthough i'm afraid it will only be a discovery for those that like to dig deep.

Reminiscent of some of the finest moments of alternative 80s rock and full of intriguing melodies and bizzare hooks it also offers Mccombs's catchy vocals to the satisfying mix.

It does try to lean to a darker almost gothic side without being too obvious about it and this subtlety is prevailent throughout. The influences are always kept under reins for that matter and Mccombs does manage to sound different in a somewhat acrobatic way.

There's at least 4 songs on this albums that would be very succesful indie hits with even minor promotion. Overall it's a very solid album, all the songs range easily from very good to great and it will rather appeal to the experienced and eclectic listener especially one that has had a lot of rock through his ears over time.

Definetely deserves to be discovered and treasured.

4 out of 5 stars Impressive...definitely worth buying.......2005-02-11

I saw Cass Mccombs open for the Shins a year ago and never forgot him. I recently got PREfecion and have to say that it is sticking with me to a point where I cannot get some of these songs out of my head. I am not impressed easily, but Cass is unique. He exhibits some influence of mid-80's british new wave like the Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen, but he's got his own ideas and they shine. "City of Brotherly Love" is one of the most majestic and ethereal songs I've heard in a long time. No wonder he records for 4AD in Europe. I recommend this record for anyone with an open mind and a love of truly good music. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 : Some of the best singles you'll hear all year..........2005-02-02

Unfortunately, singles don't always save an album. I don't really believe in the ratings system, but since I have to designate some basis from which I will launch my opinion on this, I would give it 3 1/2 stars. There are some great songs here. Equinox, Sacred Heart, She's Still Suffering and especially City of Brotherly Love prove that Mccombs music is career oriented stuff. The production is cleaner, yet more muffled than his debut "A", and the song sequencing is rather cut and paste, but this does not detract from the album. What does, though, is the sense that there is too much filler. Mccombs seems to have a working knowledge of the fact that not every song he has written here is great or even good. The songs in-between those listed above seem to meander until handoff to the aformentioned. That is not to say that every other song does not carry some sort of weight. Cuckoo, Bury Mary and All Your Dreams May Come True would be stronger songs if they were not bastard stepbrothers to Sacred Heart and Equinox. Never the less, this is an album that I am sure I will continue to revisit throughout the year. There are enough great songs on this record to merit that sort of summation.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Cass Compilation.......2007-05-07

This CD contains most of the songs from her 2nd solo album in 1969, and the various singles that were compiled on the 1970 " Mama's Big One's " collection. Slanted towards the great pop songs Cass recorded, and missing the more artistic statements & ballads from her solo debut album in 1968. Hence not the best representative collection of her recordings, but good nonetheless as Cass always sang great. Her powerhouse version of the Laura Nyro ballad " HE'S A RUNNER " contains one of the best vocals that Cass ever recorded.

4 out of 5 stars The Voice of Mamas and Papas!.......2005-09-23

This is a collection of (Mama) Cass Elliot Dunhill recordings from 1968-71; so her later RCS and Blue Thumb albums are not represented here! It's a budget-price release with a 4 page booklet featuring a short biography and only sparse information about the tracks. Fortunately the music sounds good - could have been remastered, as several tracks sound better than my old vinyl versions.

Cass Elliot was the biggest voice of the Mamas and Papas and she recorded two albums for Dunhill records in 1968 and 1969 - plus a handfull of fine singles - Her first was recorded and released almost simultaniously with the 4th Mamas and Papas album, and both albums feature the song that has become her signature tune, "Dream a Little Dream of Me".

Her second album "Bubble Gum Lemonade . . " is almost completely represented here with only one track missing.

Obviously a song like "Dream a Little Dream of Me" stand out, great tune, beautifully arranged and Elliot at her very best; but there are several other highlights here, though some songs are a little burdened down by too heavy orchestration. The Mann/Weill songs of which two were hit-singles are probably among those that sound the most like the Mapas and Papas, and they are all great; especially "New World Coming" and "It's Getting Better".

Other stand-outs are the slightly jazzy "Blow Me a Kiss" ( similar mood to "Dream a Little Dream"), "Ain't Nobody Else But You" and the two "good-time" tunes "Move in a Little Close Baby" and "Easy Come, Easy Go"

5 out of 5 stars A gem - the great Mama died too young.......2003-12-31

This is just a lovely album which highlights Cass Elliot's unmistakeable voice and reminds me how much I loved the Mamas and the Papas and, like other reviewers, I still miss Cass.

I didn't know much about her solo material, apart from the singles, but this is full of great two/three minute songs and is a feel-good album of high quality. It is, however, not without the odd surprise - "He's A Runner" for instance.

My only gripe - the title of the album. It's an irrelevance to call it "Dedicated ...." It refers to the Mamas and the Papas, which is unnecessary - Cass was making a name for herself as a solo singer before her untimely death. However, it's a very minor point.

5 out of 5 stars MAMA CASS, WE MISS YOU!.......2003-07-01

This is probably the best collection of Mama Cass I've seen. It's labeled as an import, but I've seen it in mainstream music/book stores. What an incredible loss, the death of Mama Cass, but what an incredible array of music she left behind! This is a wonderful compilation and one can't help but wonder how far she could have gone with that one-of-a-kind voice! Keep in mind that only her solo work is represented here, not her work with the Mamas and the Papas. Great listen!

4 out of 5 stars good music rather poorly presented.......2002-09-14

The packaging looks cheap, and the brief liner notes are error-ridden, but the song selection is actually pretty good. Sadly, no tracks from Elliot's RCA recordings, but at least this one does contain the wonderful "He's A Runner," which none of the other collections feature.

5 out of 5 stars A confident, self-assuerd Cass just hitting her stride!.......2006-03-02

I have listened to this CD many times and like many reviewers I am still struck by the quality of the sound. I will swear that I am in the same room with Cass Elliott as she belts out these tunes! Cass is truly in control of her performance and she seems able to lead her audience in any direction she wishes. Indeed, her rapport with her audience is excellent; this CD includes two "raps" (times when she speaks) with the audience. She talks about a recent knee injury, making light of her having to temporarily use a cane to share something of her personal life with her fans. She also reminisces about the clubs called "basket houses" in which she sang early on in her career--it was considered a "big night" if she made six dollars. Ha!

The CD is actually a live recording of Cass's performance at a Chicago nightclub called Mister Kelly's. There is also a studio recording of Cass singing "I Think A Lot About You." I agree with fellow reviewers who write that it's so tragic that Cass seems to be just hitting her stride when she passed away from a very untimely death.

There are GREAT songs on this CD that demand our attention. In particular, Cass sings the song entitled "My Love" written by Paul McCartney and his late wife Linda; while "Don't Call Me Mama Anymore" is very personal and well as beautifully arranged. "The Night Before" is awesome. She sings "I'll Be Seeing You" and "I Gotta Right To Sing The Blues" written by Harold Arlen (who wrote "Over The Rainbow") and Koehler-Warner. The "Theme From L'Amour" is both catchy and playful, too.

The liner notes by Richard Barton Campbell are extensive and very informative. Between the song set and the liner notes a person can really get to know a lot about Cass Elliott--as well as what she wanted to do with her life had she lived longer. Campbell writes how Cass quit high school just two weeks before graduation to rush to New York to seriously pursue a show business career; how Cass actually despised being called "Mama" Cass; and to support what he writes Richard Campbell peppers his liner notes with Cass' own words. A clever writer! The liner notes include photos of Cass including a picture of an 8 track tape of this performance. Ooooh, an 8 track tape of a Cass Elliott performance--nostalgia!

In short, the song set from this concert reflects an optimistic, emotionally healthier Cass ready to reach new heights in her career and her relationships, too. Yes, maybe Cass didn't live too long after this album was released; but I somehow get the feeling that she still managed to accomplish a type of self-fulfillment than some people ever experience in their entire "normal life-spans." We are all better off for Cass Elliott being amongst us in the 1960s and the early 1970s. Bravo, Cass Elliott! She went out a winner and with songs like "Listen To The World" she taught us much.

I recommend this CD for fans of The Mamas and The Papas, pop music, and people who want to get better acquainted with Cass Elliott's talent.

5 out of 5 stars What a singer!!! What a woman!!!.......2003-11-09

This was recorded 30 years ago.. but feels like it's new. I was 6 at the time.
Cass Elliot was a one of kind woman. She was in a category all her own. She made her own kind of music. It's a tragedy that her life was moving into such success and achievement at the time of her premature death in 1974, a year after this album.. Cass was and is "Entertainment"!!!
She hosted the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson a number of times.. and I hope they will release those appearances in their entirety. This album was also the name of her CBS televison Special.. and I hope they will give us that tv concert on DVD. Cass was bigger than life.
Her love of life was contagious.. She enjoyed making others happy. Her music is still making us happy!
Cass is timeless.

3 out of 5 stars CASS ELLIOT'S TORCH SONG ALBUM.......2001-08-02

THIS LIVE CASS ELLIOT ALBUM IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN MOST OF HER MUSICAL EFFORTS. THE SONGS SHE SINGS HERE HAVE A MAINLY BLUES/TORCH SONG QUALITY. NOT MY FAVORITE, BUT FOR WHAT IT IS, IT IS GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars A dream come true!!!.......2001-07-14

As her number one fan, I was thrilled to purchase this fantastic rerelease of Cass Elliot's final album!!! Cass has never sounded more beautiful, the material is perfect, the orchestration flawless, and Cass' banter is completely charming!!! This is Cass at her very best!!! Thanks to all involved in bringing us this fabulous rerelease!!! Please release the rest of Cass' catalogue!!! It's all worth having in such stunning audio quality!!! And the aditional bonus tracks are the icing on the cake!!! Buy this album, it's a little piece of Heaven!!! We love you Cass!!!

4 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2001-04-14

This is an amazing re-issue! It has unbelievable clarity and realism, projecting the listener into the intimate atmosphere of the nightclub in which most of it was recorded in a way the original vinyl could not. And Cass' stage talents really shine, her warm voice caressing the audience during the patter and sparkling in the songs. The new liner notes give a glimpse of the backstage work that went into this outstanding performance. The three bonus tracks are the icing on the cake, consisting of wonderful material that has been almost impossible to find since its original issue. One of the added songs is the studio version of "I Think A Lot About You", which makes for an interesting comparison with Cass' handling of the same song on stage as recorded for the original live album. That one and "L'Amour" show off Cass' way with a love song to perfection. By way of contrast, "Listen to the World" displays both her strong social consciousness (which was genuine) and her ability to belt a rock number -- in case anyone forgot that she could do that, too. It's a spirited and fitting close to Cass' most upbeat album. Her first RCA album, "Cass Elliot", is still her best and my favorite, but I find myself listening to this one over and over.

5 out of 5 stars discover Tailleferre here.......2006-12-07

This is a charming and delightful record. The recording is clean and colourful and the performances seem to me excellent. It is an ideal introduction to one of Erik Satie's best disciples. The variety of works heightens the depths of each work, while their brevity and quality make them ideal for repeated grammophone record listening. I particularly like the String Quartet (not a music form that I usually care for).

4 out of 5 stars Portrait of a composer.......2002-08-03

This fine recording is a perfect introduction to music of Germaine Tailleferre. Warmly recommended.

This recording has some of Tailleferre's best works. Some of the tracks on this recording, however, seems too slow for my taste. I recommend the 1993 German recording of her chamber music if you can find it.

4 out of 5 stars failed comeback.......2006-09-30

this album is by no means a classic, but because i got it for next to nothing i didnt mind what i herd, however if you have herd there classic bangers from back in the day,you will be dissapointed,i get the impression that they tryed once more to reach a broader fanbase, but it never happened,to long in between albums and simply fans forget you.get it if its dirt cheap.

1 out of 5 stars i disagree.......2005-12-21

what stuff you have been smoking? this is the weakest offering by farrrrrrrrr! come on now this is the worst, but it can't undo their legacy in the rap game.

4 out of 5 stars Fans of this group will love this album to death!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-06-28

For those who loved three times dope & thought that they fell off, well guess again. The beats are tight and the ryhming of E.S.T. is the E.S.T. the we remembered from "THE GREATEST MAN ALIVE"!!! Buy this album, because you will find a hard time trying to find this album in any record store!
