Ice Cube's "Down for Whatever" is the highlight on Office Space's soundtrack, a classy West Coast production with just the right proportions of laid-back groove and simmering tension. Scarface turns in a credible enough track ("No Tears"), and the Geto Boys' impersonation of Bill Clinton at the end of "Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta" is funny, though not terribly accurate. But Canibus and Biz Markie's attempt to rework David Allan Coe's "Take This Job and Shove It" into a hip-hop novelty hit falls flat, as does a similar effort by Lisa Stone at revitalizing "9 to 5." Two ancient Perez Prado mambos tacked on at the end of the album throw its already shaky continuity even further off course, but they're such great tunes that only a fool would bemoan their presence. --Charley Gothic

4 out of 5 stars Different, in a good way.........2007-03-03

This is a GREAT CD, but only if you've seen the movie first. I mean, come on...it's a bunch of computer geeks listening to all this gangsta rap stuff! When you hear the songs on this CD, you'll immediately recognize ones from great scenes - Michael in the car in the traffic jam, them loading the virus, beating the crap out of the fax machine, and so on. Just hearing the songs will make you laugh because you can picture exactly what's happening in the movie at that point :-)

So get the CD if you've seen the movie and if you're ok with the CD being 90% rap. It's a great sampling of songs from the movie!

5 out of 5 stars Almost as great as the movie.......2006-12-25

We all know how amazing this movie is, but the soundtrack can hold its own weight. Now if you have seen this movie, as I assume you have if you are reading this, you'll know that most of this soundtrack is rap music. Not just rap music, but most of it is gangsta rap. So, you'll need to appreciate that style of music to purchase this CD. There are 5 great rap songs on this CD from Ice Cube, Slum Village, Scarface, and The Geto Boys with 2.

If you love the songs with Michael Bolton rapping in his car, Peter Gibbons loading the virus disk onto the computer, the three of the guys destroying the printer, or when Peter takes over Initech then get this soundtrack. I warn you that there are fillers on this CD that should not be on this CD, but that comes with the territory of soundtracks.

Please do not purchase this CD if you only like the Perez Prado songs. These are the songs played during the traffic jam and when Milton is on the beach. Just go to itunes and spend the $2 necessary to own these songs.

All in all, you need to like rap in order to buy this CD or you're wasting your money. Watch the movie again and if you know you love the songs they play throughout the movie then buy the CD, it's the same music.

5 out of 5 stars Office Space - The Motion Picture Soundtrack.......2006-11-10

I'm not a big rap fan but, I really like this soundtrack. I loved the movie and the tunes were impressive. However, not for the young, due to language. But, the music is great. I keep it in my car all the time.

5 out of 5 stars Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.......2006-01-13

People buy movie soundtracks for one of two reasons: the liked the movie, or they liked a song or two they heard in the said movie they liked. This is a rare gem, for me, in that it was a movie that I absolutely loved but as I detest rap music I bought it anyway just to experience the movie again.

There is something very funny about a couple of white boys from the suburbs listening to rap / hip hop / gangsta rap and they don't have the slightest clue what life in the hood is like. I have no idea what it's like! I'm a white girl from the suburbs and I have no idea! But as they were a bunch of happy, bumbling fools whose only violent act was beating senseless a fax machine, there was something so funny about them listening to the Ghetto Boys and Ice Cube. Damn, it does feel good to be a gangsta...

5 out of 5 stars help.......2005-06-12

please does anyone know the song damn it feels good to be a gangsta sampled? i took a look in the booklet but it doesn't list the name of the song but features stevie wonder and marvin gaye's names. please if anyone knows the song or songs it samples it would be greatly appreciated

5 out of 5 stars one of the most fun r&b/hip hop soundtracks.......2007-01-02

this was such a cool soundtrack to own in 1996. Many of the songs became hits, notably R.Kelly's I Believe I Can Fly and Monica's For You I Will. There are also some good r&b tunes and hip hop numbers on this from artists like seal, salt & pepa, changing faces, coolio etc.

5 out of 5 stars "Welcome to the Space Jam...".......2006-05-26

Okay, when the movie came out I went ape$hit (I was like 12) and I ran out to buy the soundtrack because it just had to be good. I was right, for every track her perfectly compliments the movie, ranging from the crowd pumping anthems like Quad City DJ's 'Space Jam' and Spin Doctors 'That's the Way' to inspirational ballads like R. Kelly's ever popular 'I Believe I Can Fly' and Monica's beautiful 'For You I Will' and everything in between. Standouts include the rap fused 'Hit 'Em High' where B-Real, Busta Rhymes, Coolio, LL Cool J and Method Man give us the Monstars theme, and the hilarious 'Basketball Jones' where Barry White trades lines with Chris Rock...insanity. Say what you will about the movie (I loved it) but this album is cream of the crop.

5 out of 5 stars Space Jam: It brings it all back.......2006-04-10

This CD brings back all the fun and excitement that was Michael Jordan in Space Jam. I love the old school rap. And Michael was magical.

Those were the days....

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2006-01-02

As soon as i watched space jam the film, i loved it and the songs that went with it.So i downloaded and copied onto a cd a few of the songs that appeared on the soundtrack album.I was disapointed as most of the songs i liked i couldnt get and i particularly liked 'Givin you all that i got' another song i was unable to download. But i was able to get my favourite song and that was 'Fly like an eagle' the main song of the film. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoyed the film and it really has some quality tunes on here. Most RnB and rap orientated songs but overall a soundtrack at its best.

Digable Planets deliberately disavowed the toughness of hip-hop culture: the trio's leader called himself Butterfly, his foil Ladybug purred like Eartha Kitt, and they produced hooks out of lines like "We're just babies, man." Despite occasional flashes of sorrow (like the pro-choice recitation "La Femme Fétal"), the group's happy and laidback on this debut, with tracks made out of old jazz records and finger-snaps, and words that draw on 50s hipster slang. Reachin' spawned the Grammy-winning single "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)," and after this album, their joyous Blue Note-and-black-lights bounce lost some of its novelty. --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars THIS WAS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAVE FOR '93.......2007-01-25

this album was a sigh of relief at the time along with MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. i was tired of the west coast stuff by this time. then i hear this bass solo on this night mix. at first i thought it was some straight ahead jazz thang, and then i heard WE LIKE THE BREEZE FLOW STRAIGHT OUT OF OUR LIDS...............and i was like whahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. i was hooked from then on. this album was like coke instead of kool aid at dinner for me. it is a jazzy, breezy, and flowing brand of hip hop that i had not heard before. yes, they were obviously inspired by ATCQ, BUT THIS IS DIFFERENT in that they seem to dig deeper...........into the planet. from beginning to end i love it.......though it wanes a bit in the middle. at the end it picks back up where the first couple of songs began. i hated that they broke up when they did. i think that they could've done some groundbreaking things in hip hop. i wonder what they could've done had they started their own label and had all the control that they desired.

5 out of 5 stars 10 Stars (The Best Hip-Hop Album I Own).......2007-01-21

Yes, indeed, the title says it all. Many reviewers may think that that's a bold statement, but yo, it is what it is. Digable Planets IS hip-hop. Listening to this album, and their follow up "Blowout Comb", just gives me a feeling that I just dont get listening to other hip-hop records. DP gives me a feelin that I dont even get from the greats: Biggie, Jay, Nas, Pac, etc. I think the main reason is because their sound is just so different. Not only is this hip-hop, this is MUSIC!! The way DP brings the world of hip-hop with jazz is just genius. I love the beats, the instruments, their lyrics, their flow, and their voices. I just hate that I slept on these cats back in 93-94, but hey, it wasnt entirely my fault. The west coast had the game locked back then. But yo, I'm elated that I finally woke up, albeit 12 years later.
I love the follow up, "Blowout Comb" (the album that actually turned me on to DP; I heard Blowout Comb first) but I would have to say that "Reachin" is slightly better. The two albums are different to me. "Reachin" is just "feel good", jazzy hip hop, and "Blowout Comb" is "chill", jazzy hip hop. I prefer "Reachin" cause, even though I'm a laid back cat, I rather "feel good" than to "chill". "Reachin" is #1 for me as far as hip hop goes, and "Blowout Comb" is 1A.

1) It's Good To Be Here--9.5/10- What a way to get things jumpin off
2) Pacifics--9.5/10- This track is "red hot"
3) Where I'm From--10/10- My favorite joint on the album. It just feels so good.
4) What Cool Breezes Do--10/10- So chill, i love the instruments
5) Time and Space--8/10- didnt feel it initially, now i love it!
6) Rebirth of Slick--10/10- this joint is just classic like that
7) Last of the Spiddyocks--9/10
8) Jimmi Diggin Cats--8.5/10
9) La Femme Fetal--9/10-This isnt a song, it's just like a poem to a cool beat. Butterfly gets deep on this one.
10) Escapism--10/10- i love it. so funky, yet so chill
11) Appointment at the Fat Clinic--7/10
12) Nickel Bags--10/10- you'll be high off DP after this joint
13) Swoon Units--10/10- "Run and tell yo mama bout this"
14) Examination of What--9/10

5 out of 5 stars They Changed Your Boogie 'Cause Your Boogie Had To Change {5 Stars}.......2006-12-09

When three unknown cats from NY dropped this jewel in '93, they changed the way people approached hip hop jazz. They weren't the first to do it, but they dropped one of the best albums in the entire sub genre. Tracks like "Jimmi Diggin' Cats", "Nickel Bags", "Where I'm From" (which has an even better remix), and "Swoon Units" are easily classics while "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" is one of those songs where you remember exactly what you were doing the first time you heard it. There's no denying the quality of this album. The album is produced entirely by Butterfly (now known as Cherrywine) and the beats are nothing less than perfection. This joint is easily a classic. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Despite what some other reviewers are telling you, there is NOTHING wrong with this album. It's flawless from top to bottom. Actually, now that I think about it, forget about standout tracks, the whole album is tight.

Reachin' is one of those albums that are so great that they're practically impossible to duplicate. The vibe captured on this album still holds up great 13 years after it's release. This is a hip hop must have. If you dig the marriage of hip hop and jazz, then do yourself a favor and grab this album. You should also check out their 2nd LP (Blowout Comb). Though it sounds nothing like this album, it's just as tight. They would disband after their sophomore release, but they certainly made magic while they were together. I recommend making this a collection piece.

Standout Tracks: La Femme Fetal, Where I'm From, Nickel Bags, What Cool Breezes Do, Swoon Units, Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat), Jimmi Diggin' Cats (My Favorite), Escapism (Gettin' Free), Time & Space (A New Refutation Of), and Appointment At The Fat Clinic

Sure, Gorillaz sounded original, but it was a pop project with all the constraints that went with it--can you imagine the six-minute remixed version of "Clint Eastwood" making it onto MTV? But that's exactly what makes Laika Come Home so good. It's a reimagined collection filled with bone-shaking dubscapes and enough reverb to transmit a message to the farthest edges of the universe. Listen to the "De-Punked" version of "Punk" with its meandering, decayed trumpet and computerized tweaks--hardly recognizable as the original--or the swinging old-school ska that crops ups on "5/4." The two-tone skank of "M1/A1" (with Terry Hall) sounds as if it should have been the original version, but the real killer tracks are those injected with dancehall vibes by DJ U Brown and Earl 16. Who says "you don't get paid for doing what you love?"--not Damon Albarn. --Caroline Butler

5 out of 5 stars New Music Revolution.......2006-07-04

Everytime i hear a gorillaz song that i have not heard before i am more than impressed and surprised at the creativity they have with their music. The gorillaz never fail to trip me out.... i think gorillaz and spacemonkeyz can start a whole new type of music that might once take over the teenage population just as rock and hip hop once did, i would bet anyone money this becomes the next teenage generations kind of music

5 out of 5 stars This is a masterpiece.......2006-03-14

The progression of my purchase: this album, then gorillaz 1 & 2. Yeah gorillaz know how to kick it, but this album? I go through life with a soundtrack, and this cd isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. Cmon, lets face it y'all, there is more to reggae than we think. This is just a step in a new and right direction. Mixing the low bass and mystical fog feel of dub with the feel good sound of reggae, and a splash of dance, this is it. There's nothing better than a 20 minute instrumental, with smooth tunage and sounds out of nowhere to mezmerize the soul.

If you dig this, you should pick up the Dead 60's dub/extended version of their only album. Plus, Reggae From Finland, out last year. Soul Captain Band, and a plethora of dub djs (plus hot smart women) make Finland worth visiting..

So yeah, buy this. And Spacemonkeyz? PLease make more of this!

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly laidback!.......2006-02-03

You will enjoy this Album, especially if you enjoy Reggae.

While randomly going through CD's on sale at a store (somewhere in India) I saw this one for about $7. For 7 bucks, it wouldn't hurt to listen. Having heard it, the experience was worth more (maybe the full price too).

The background is traditional Reggae rhythym, yet each track is contemporarily styled and fused with different Instruments. I guess this is a hallmark of the SpaceMonkeyz. I often find myself listening to this album alongside tracks from Willie Williams, Max Romeo, UB40 and even Pink Floyd amongst other artists that have a strong anchoring in easy tunes and rhythyms. The mixes were all originally part of the Gorillaz album from 2001 (except perhaps one track at the end). Even if you do own the original album, buy this one, it is very different and will not fail to surprise you.

4 out of 5 stars Very.....Innovative.......2005-12-21

I have loved Gorillaz ever since my friend showed me the self-titled album one day. I'm not sure what it is about them that I like so much, possibly just all the freshness in their songs. This album sounds like they took a field trip to the jungle: not what I expected. The vocals are not very vibrant at all; it's more instrumental. I like how it all works out, though. It's extremely unique! I'm just not sure if it's worth owning. Listen and decide for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars The Space Monkeys.... And The Gorillaz..............2005-10-24

I have to say, this really suprised me. The music was better than I had expected, and the style was completely changed, really cool. This album features longer versions of your favorite tracks from the Gorillaz first album, "Gorillaz" and remixes them into longer, more chill tracks where the raps are replaced by ragae improves, and the keyboard effects and synths have gone crazy and created a vortex of chill, raage, techno, Gorillaz style greatness. 2-D's vocals are almost non-existant in this album, which really supries me. There are hardly and vocals at all really, just some ragae improves and small vocals done by some side artists, and some "to cool for school" ragae beats from the drummer that are just ausom.

Clint Eastwood has, yet again, been redone, and in this case has gone completely ragae, the keyboards are all a ragae beat, the vocals have changed, the drum rythm and time signature has changed, and there is now a horn part. The only thing that even makes it recognizeable is the harmonica from time to time, that reminds you, that it is Clint Eastwood.

It's hard to say if you'll like this or not. If you like The Gorillaz because of their more pop, rock sort of sound, look elsewhere. However if it has always been the more ragae techno sort of thing that you liked, this is for you, and if you liked the raps, I garuntee you'll love the ragae vocals.

So, for any hardcore Gorilla worshipper like me, you have to get this simply to hear what they would sound like if they had been more ragae orientated. The music is still great. I recomend this album to pretty well everyone.

PEACE! THE GORILLAZ ARE AUSOM!

1 out of 5 stars Mind Candy.......2007-06-12

Boy, context is everything. Or, in this case, nothing.

I came to Opus III after being captivated by Kirsty Hawkshaw's voice on a couple of Delerium albums. But where Delerium seduced the listener with conversations between synthetic and organic sounds, Opus III has all the subtlety and sensuous curves of a drag strip; where Delerium caressed the listener with bass lines that drew the listener into the songs, Opus III plows straight ahead with thumping one-note bass lines.

There are fewer ideas on this album than in your average TV theme song.

2 out of 5 stars One single flash of brilliance.......2006-07-02

There were a lot of albums like this in the early 1990s. Mind Fruit consists of Opus III's big hit, and ten b-sides. Thankfully Opus III's big hit was It's a Fine Day, a cover of a song by Jane and Barton from the early 1980s. It is the first track on the album and it is wonderful. Haunting, surreal, and odd. It is so absolutely nice and up-beat that it is sinister. Although the production sounds old-fashioned it is a classic of its genre and of its time. But an album requires more music than just one song, and Opus III was presumably pushed for time to write forty minutes of music. The group has nothing to match It's a Fine Day, a song which it did not write, and only a few of the other songs are entertaining.

The second track is a cover of King Crimson's I Talk to the Wind, from the album In the Court of the Crimson King. Full marks for an esoteric choice of floaty pop-dance cover, but it's neither here nor there; the original song is dated hippy nonsense, and the cover is insubstantial. Flow is just filler, it sounds like the introduction to a song, but it stops after two minutes. Stars in My Pocket is very nice, a flowing chill-out number that is an up-beat precursor of trip-hop. But it's only three minutes long. It is over before it gets going.

Sea People unfortunately sounds like Enigma. Evolution is a generic piece of early 1990s instrumental club dance music. It is the kind of thing that might have been used in a fashion show. Into this Universe is an experimental song on which the vocalist talk-sings. It is useless. Up is also very generic and Alzir is pleasant muzak but again it is only three minutes long, which is too short for an ambient-style piece of music. Outro is thirty seconds of filler. The second half of the album is terrible.

The group's major attribute was the vocalist, but she only sings properly on three of the tracks (It's a Fine Day and Stars in My Pocket are the two best things on the album, and the King Crimson cover is at the very least interesting). Otherwise her voice is processed or used in tiny snippets, as a background effect. It's a Fine Day is unlike the rest of the album, and vastly superior.

And that is that. I give the group kudos for not trying to fill out the album with remixes of It's a Fine Day, although there were several.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-04-15

It's unbelievable that this CD was released almost 15 years ago. The tracks still sound fresh, and rival most if not all of the trance CDs released today. As all of these reviews indicate though, Opus III's trump card is the incomparable Kirsty Hawkshaw. Today, there are many electronica efforts that are fronted by female vocalists (among my favorite are Tiff Lacey, Tina Dico, Colette, Omi (Way Out West), and Nicola Hitchcock), but Kirsty sets the bar IMO. If you buy this CD, you should also check out Meta Message which is a compilation of her fine work over the years. If you can get your hands on it (it's out of print, although you can purchase it from her web site...), also check out that has the awesome track "Leafy Lane". On this CD, a must have track is the classic "It's a Fine Day".

5 out of 5 stars Fruit for your mind..........2004-02-24

Kirsty Hawkshaw and her former bandmates have made one of the best trance/techno/house albums. Besides a terrific cover of the Edward Barton penned "Its a Fine Day", there is also a great King Crimson cover ("I Talk To the Wind") and an original song called "Evolution Rush". This album definately is better than their follow up album and is one album I always recommend to any electronic music lover.

5 out of 5 stars Out there and ethereal!.......2003-05-20

I loved this CD for the sheer beauty and range of Ms. Hawkshaw's voice and for the "way out there" atmosphere that Opus III created as a backdrop for her vocals. Opus III generates strong rhythms throughout the better part of the tracks and that fact just makes this CD all the more danceable and well, listen-able. I look forward to hearing more of her and Opus III's work!

Since Death Row Records' 1990s rap reign of terror ended with Dr. Dre's escape, Tupac Shakur's murder, and CEO Suge Knight's imprisonment, post-Death Row success has eluded the Philly-born, LA-bred rapper known as Kurupt. His first solo album, Kuruption, an East-Coast/West-Coast themed double CD, and his follow-up album, Tha Streetz Is a Mutha, an orgy of violence and Crip-gang fetish, did not live up to expectations. But with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey, it appears the third time's a charm for the talented ex-Dogg Pound gangster, as is the LP's motif. A fantastic voyage combining sci-fi futurism, criminal menace, and blunt smoke, Space Boogie features warm grooves from veteran producers DJ Quik and Kurupt's Pound partner Daz, as well as from newer names like Fredwreck and Soopafly. While Dr. Dre's absence here is as surprising as Kurupt's collaborations with Jon B, Everlast, and Limp Bizkit, there's mo' than enough bounce here for this "Cyanide Sinatra" to boogie. --'EL Juba

3 out of 5 stars "Tha Streets Iz A Mutha" It Isn't, but It's Still A Dope LP (Rating: 7 out of 10- -3.5 stars).......2007-07-06

Kurupt is part of the reason why I enjoy west coast rap music. After an excellent sophomore album Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha back in '99, he comes again two years later with Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey. This album still has that west coast sound, which is what I like to hear from Kurupt.

What had me skeptical was the questionable lead single "It's Over Now" with Natina Reed (who really should have stuck to singing because she cannot rap), because it was so pop frendly. But other songs on here redeem that song from making the album a loss. One of the great songs here is "Can't Go Wrong" with DJ Quik and Butch Cassady. Another dope song is the song, "The Hardest Muthaf*****" featuring Xzibit, MC Ren (who rips a nice verse), and Nate Dogg which I really like. And whats a Kurupt album without Daz making an appearance (they're paired together like Redman and Method Man.)? Daz lays down some vocals on "Gangsta's" and "F Da World" two standout songs.

Although this album is dope, it isn't Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha. A lot of these songs here are hit and miss as well. As I mentioned before "It's Over Now" was unappealing. Infact, the beginning of the album starts off real slow and pickes up when you hit the sixth track. Also some of the songs send the album into a different direction like the R&B sounding song "Sunshine" with Jon B, and the political type song "Kuruption" with Everlast's singing. They're not bad tracks, but if you're used to hearing Kurupt, you will be a little thrown off.

But overall Kurupt's third album is worth your time. You still get those tracks that made you love Kurupt and Tha Dogg Pound to begin with. And I really cannot complain, because I had to let this album grow on me. To be honest, it was actually better than I thought. I slept on this album back in '01, and found this album in the used CD bin at the store, and decided to give it a listen. If you're a fan of Kurupt or Tha Dogg Pound in general, I recommend this album to you. Peace.

4 out of 5 stars Good album, maybe his best work since Dogg Food.......2006-07-11

I'm not sure which is better, this album or Tha Streets Iz a Mutha, but these two albums are certainly the best of his solo career. To this day I still believe Kurupt has never quite lived up to the level he showed on Doggystyle and Tha Dogg Pound's excellent debut Dogg Food, but he does come close with his 3rd solo album Space Boogie.

After the intro the album kicks off with the title track which is a real banger, Fredwreck provides a sick beat which Kurupt & Nate Dogg ride well. On Da Grind is the next great track, produced by and featuring old partner Daz, and DJ Quik provides a funky beat and drops a verse for Can't Go Wrong which is one of the highlights of the album. Those are my 3 top tracks but there are several other good songs, The Hardest.. with Xzibit, Nate Dogg & MC Ren is a great gangsta track with a great beat from Fredwreck (sounding very Dre like). On Onsite, Gangsta's, Bring Back That G.., At It Again & Kuruption are also great, on Kuruption it is good to see Kurupt try something political, which works surprisingly well. It's not all good news though, It's Over is one of the worst songs i've ever heard in any genre of music, and is completely out of place on this album. It feels like Kurupt went out of his way to make a hit but it just ends up sounding awful, it is bubblegum rap at it's worst and has perhaps the worst hook in hiphop history. There are a couple of other skip moments as well, and a strange appearance from Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit, no idea how Kurupt got involved with these clowns but surprisingly Lay It On Back is O.K.

Overall Space Boogie.. is far from perfect but it has enough good moments for me to highly recommend it, in general the production is superb, Fredwreck handles a lot of it, Daz, Quik, Soopafly and DJ Lethal????? do the rest. The best tracks as mentioned above are superb, the worst track(s) are pretty terrible, but it's a solid 4 star album all in all, and one of the best West Coast albums of this decade, check it out!

5 out of 5 stars A Wide Variety of Hip Hop Styles Offers Something For All!.......2005-05-30

Kurupt's third solo effort: Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey has something for just about every hip-hop fan. It has some mainstream pop-rap: "It's Over," The album also has G-Funk: 1)"Can't Go Wrong," (DJ Quik heats up the production! Nice funky beat with a jazzy hook.) 2)The title cut, which you can lowride to! and 3) "Sunshine" with an old-school beat. and finally 4) "At It Again" with use of a talk box and a fast party beat! The album also caters to the hard-core fan: 1) "The Hardest" 2)"On Da Grind." The album has appeal to even rock fans: 1)"Lay it on Back" w/ Fred Durst (does have a hip-hop beat, though). The album also has a few songs with an underground feel like "On, Onsite" w/ Lil 1/2 Dead. The different styles and Kurupt's unique personality make this album a neat addition to your rap collection. This album is not so much set trippin' and gang banging as in Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha (though that one is tight too!) This is his main party album, something to relax to and party to!

5 out of 5 stars guitar sound is a spangly spangly new twist.......2005-04-26

Kurupts skills on the mic are nicely above average, the guests spots are terrific but it's the BEATS on this one that make it way, way up there above the clouds. Namely, that guitar sound - check out the steely guitar sound - only the west coast can use guitars like this- check out "on, on sight" and "the hardest". Best tracks I've heard for a long, long time.

Kool Keith, aka Black Elvis, Dr. Octagon, Poppa Large, Dr. Dooom, and about a dozen personae, got his start with the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC's in the mid-1980s. Although revered, their recordings made little commercial impact and the group disbanded. Since then Keith has enigmatically swung from project to project, maintaining a deliberately inscrutable cloak of aliases and alter egos. The result is a catalog that is high in concept, broad in scope, and completely, utterly wacky: it's hip-hop as Darius James writes novels and Terry Gilliam makes films. Only a few other artists--Definition of Sound and Divine Styler most notably--have ever come close to achieving similar results. Judging from the results of this recording, one of Keith's more straight-ahead, more rappers should try. On Lost, Keith's rhymes are unpredictable, obscure, and hilarious. On "Static," he somehow rhymes Benjamins with basketball star Scottie Pippen, (ex-NFL quarterback Mark) Rypien, and 1960s boxing champ Sonny Liston; elsewhere he namechecks 1970s journeymen basketballers Darnell Hillman and Slick Watts. He's critical of hip-hop pretension on many tracks, most notably "I Need a Release Date." Although the recording features a solid, contemporary bounce, Keith is completely old school--it's his whimsical words and unique delivery that matter most. --Martin Johnson

4 out of 5 stars Hip-Hop in Space.......2005-02-16

Everyone loves space. We have movies, books, and tv shows that have been hugely successful as a result of their science fiction/space themes. So when a talented hip hop artist takes the discontent he feels toward the music industry and others and places it in a science fiction/futuristic setting, the results are highly enjoyable. I've heard that for this album Keith donned the "Elvis" personna for the obvious reason that the King was heavily influenced by and/or exploited black music, and for the not-so-obvious reason that Elvis is purported to not be dead but is lost in space. Wow.

For me, standouts include Lost in Space for its sultry backing vocals and catchy refrain; Livin' Astro is a great way to say "I'm a pimp" while adding a fresh take; Black Elvis and the upbeat Maxi Curls - two songs that I can listen to over and over again.

The only drawback for me is the lack of beats on this album. Intentional or not, this is not booty-shaking music, for the most part. There almost seems to be an underlying beat from song to song. Exceptions include the funny and funky Supergalactic Lover and the stellar Livin' Astro.

I think what helps the album feel so fresh is that it "pretends" to be in the future, while using old-style beats and effects. The sound is definitely unique, however, and will appeal to fans of Outkast or Eric B and Rakim alike. While it all sounds familiar, it also sounds alien. If that's what Keith was after, he accomplished his mission.

5 out of 5 stars Kruel Keith: A true master of the game.......2005-01-09

Keith, admist whatever else he calls himself, and the man with a concept behind almost every album, incorporates two concepts into this 1999 release: 'Black Elvis' and 'Lost In Space.' While the 'space' concept was nothing unfamiliar to him, the 'Black Elvis' moniker was, yet he embraces it effortlessly. Despite the two concepts at play here, this seems like Keith is completely free to talk about whatever he wants. He covers criticising of unoriginal emcees often, but usually in an abstract way. You get much of his esoteric humor, references to basketball players and other celebrities, and then many songs dealing with ladies as always.
This album actually has moments where you get the non-conforming Keith veering dangerously close to commercial territory on some spots. Tracks like (the female R&B-sung chorus in)"All The Time," "Master Of The Game,"(traditional West Coast/down South flavor) and possibly "Supergalactic Lover" sound unusually close to stuff you hear often on the radio. At times, Keith waters down his lyrics on these three, but he still brings enough entertainment and energy on all three to keep the momentum of the album moving. Actually, this is the most consistent, smoothest-flowing album that I've listened to in a LONG time! A big reason why I gave it five stars.

The first four songs are really appealing. The intro is funny and has a slick, short verse by Keith. His clever, abstract, unique, and odd wordplay kicks off in "Lost In Space," which has a weird chorus, but one you would expect if you know Keith. It has become commonplace for me to hear Keith say the weirdiest things in his songs, it no longer bugs me anymore, maybe why I embraced this album so easily! "Rockets On The Battlefield" is a BANGER, and "Livin' Astro" is fun and funky, where he references Lionel Ritchie, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Elton John, and many others. Later on we have "I'm Seeing Robots,"(dedicated to the one-dimensional, stuck-up, high-maintainance women with fake assets) which grew on me very quickly. This song is so funny, so true! Right after is the collab with Sadat X on "Static." That's right: Sadat from Brand Nubian. Sadat and Keith have like nothing in common except that they both possess higher-pitched, unique voices. "Static" is not as mesmorizing and funky as it is a successful collaboration between two extremely different MC's.
Further in, we have "Maxi Curls" which displays some braggodocio and Keith roasting copycat rappers at his finest. "Keith Turbo" is the only track I still can't get into, it's almost too boring. Next is "Fine Girls," actually just about one girl, and it suprisingly has some nice jazz incorporated. Good to hear Keith using a little jazz in his work! "The Girls Don't Like The Job" lives up to the hype as it is one of the standouts here, where Keith plays a high-rolling business man and even takes jabs at materialistic Americans! "Clifton" is a solid collab with Motion Man and some other cat, here named 'Noggin' Nodders from Oakland,' and has an longer-than-usual verse from Keith and he calls himself 'Keith Telavazquez,' the latest in Kool Keith monikers. "I Don't Play" falls just below classic, but is a boomin' way to top it all off. A very good song. The brightest standouts off this cd are: "Rockets On The Battlefield," "Livin' Astro," "I'm Seeing Robots, "Static," "Maxi Curls," and "Girls Don't Like The Job." Both the tracks, "Lost In Space," and "Black Elvis" are quite good in case you were wondering.

The few complaints I have deal mainly with the choruses and beats. The beats are mostly solid, some even excellent, but I guess don't match up with Automater or Kutmasta Kurt beats like we're used to hearing Keith rhyme over. That's fine though, Keith does them himself, and even a bad Kool Keith beat is a good one for most other artists. I think we tend to forget how priveledged Keith has been to work with top-notch producers in the past. Many of the beats do convey that 'spacey'-type feel. The choruses are mostly simple, but not a huge eyesore. The choruses range from annoying, to irrelevant, to conventional("Master Of The Game"). Skip the awkward ones though, Keith's specialty is awkward choruses. It would have been nice if he would have changed up the verse-chorus structure a little, but the album still comes out pretty fresh.
Overall, this Kool Keith album remains consistent and entertaining throughout, and is easily one of his most-accessible and lovable works. He doesn't even swear but like two minor curses, and the only strong cursing comes in "Clifton," but by Motion Man and another guy, not Keith. He even left out the perverted humor, and his songs dealing with women are actually done in a mature, sometimes even romantic way! I was unsure going into this album what I was going to get, based on the high reverence of his earlier albums, and I ended up rewarded! It's amazing how fresh Keith sounds even though his career started in the mid-80's with the Ultramagnetic MC's. Hell, Keith still sounds fresh on his latest albums. He never ages! If you have other Kool Keith albums, make sure you add this one, and if you are unfamiliar with Keith, this is THE recommended place to start...

3 out of 5 stars somewhat displease.......2004-11-04

The intro? Fantastic.
What I love about Kool Keith is that much of his antics, themes, and rhymes are very tongue-in-cheek. That can be heard here as well. The problem here is that he strayed dangerously close to the same conventional styles that he speaks out against.
A Vocoder? While vintage as it is, Master of the Game was a little too unorginal for me to tolerate. Granted I hold Keith to standards far higher than I would for most other artists only because I've heard the sheer genius. That being said, some of the engineering was a little bleak, plus his verse chorus format was a bit too redundant. It reminded me of old Cyprus Hill where you could use lyrics from one track on another and never miss a beat.
Now that's not saying that Keith doesn't have the Koolest flow or cadence that I've ever heard. There are at least 5 tracks on this album for which I would say anyone should make the purchase. No one rhymes like Keith. It's his erratic and clever schemes that have had me hooked since Octogonecologyst.
Three stars means there are more tracks that I skip than tracks that I love, but the ones that I love convince me that Keith hasn't lost a thing.

5 out of 5 stars Rockets on the Battlefield!.......2004-10-03

This album is great, really I could put this in at any time and bump the he** out of it. Lyrically and flow-wise I think this is posibly Keith's greatest work. The beats are also spaced out and funky. They had to grow on me at first, but in short time I felt them completely. I think they perfectly compliment Keith's insane steelos on this record. I also have to say some people need to shut up and stop comparing every Kool Keith record to Dr. Octagon and stop bringing up Automator when ever the beats he rhymes over are mentioned. This kind of whining has surpassed the levels of extreme cliche at this point. Personally, if I had to choose one to keep between Black Elvis and Dr. Octogon, I may actually go for the funkier Black Elvis.

4 out of 5 stars Late Styles: Could There Be Original Black Elvises?.......2004-02-08

Keith Thornton made quite the "subcultural" splash in the late 90s with his *Dr. Octagon* record, mixed by Dan the Automator and featuring one of the most "post-historical" personae in the history of arts and letters; but this record, recorded under his original moniker "Kool Keith" with Kut Masta Kurt at the helm, is really the one to give any questions still swirling around Keith's earlier career with the Ultramagnetic MCs some substance. Is this really the rhetorical master of the US present? We lack the conditions of assessment under which such a question would even make sense, such that the "artistry" of Kool Keith is *espied* rather than even felt: as other reviewers here suggest, the cultural references on this material (released amidst a flurry of faux-fabulous "hardcore" rap and a much-publicized dispute with Sony records) are oblique to the point of obscurity.

At the time of its release, the major question about this record was why Keith was wearing a rubber Elvis wig (to be duplicated on the tour) and although to my knowledge this question has never been answered by the rather knowledgeable fans of "Blue Flowers", it is perhaps not ours to shift its valences and the "green" album may remain a mystery as regards its authorial intention (i.e., exactly what this was supposed to do besides "blow up"). But hey, since this is usually hard to buy in stores perhaps it is not too much beside the point to mention that the original Black Elvis is here taken to have had not only an extremely questionable hairstyle but also Marilyn Monroe on his back: and maybe he did, too, in some fairly rarefied sense.

A compilation of rare psychopathic music brought out in 99, was brought out on Joe and Joey records because it had illegal and uncleared samples like Psychopathic Rydas cds.

Dirt Ball: By ICP and Twiztid is a great song, rocking hook and good verses, J has the best one. 5/5

Murder Murder Murder: By Twiztid, it is awesome, lyrics are good and beat is awesome, this was originally on the Mostasteless album but was taken off in the re-issue. 5/5

$50 Bucks: By ICP was supposed to be on the Amazing Jeckel Brothers album but due to it having a Led Zepplin guitar riff, one of the dudes from the band wouldnt let them use it on a nationwide cd so it is on here, i love this song, it makes you feel good. 5/5

Blam: By Mr.Bones A.K.A Jamie Madrox, it was for his 96 solo album that never came out so it is on here, this is another good song, he raps great on here and i always get the chorus stuck in my head for days when i hear this. 5/5

Sleep Walker:By ICP was given away on a 99 Hallowicked cd, i feel it is average at best, some people may think it is great, i say it is average. 3/5

R-U-A Ryda?:By Psychopathic Rydas with the the stolen beat "Who In The F**k?" by MC Ren, not a bad song but they could have put a better track from the Dumpin album on here. 3/5

She Ain't Afraid: By Twiztid another track from the first Mostasteless cut, sexually explicit and its great. 5/5

Slim Anus:By ICP with help from Jamie Madrox, this is funny, everyone has heard the annoying single ''My Name Is'' by Eminem well this is the song but words have been taken out and new words have been put in all in all it takes the p*ss and hey i can say Eminem has appeared on a Psychopathic release right here. 5/5

Dead End:By ICP and ICE T good song by these 3 was supposed to be on the AJB album but fans wanted B**ches on it with ODB, still its a good track. 4/5

Red Neck Hoe 99:By ICP and Twiztid, an updated version of an old school ICP track, its great and funny, Madrox has the best verse on this one. 5/5

(Intermission) I am listening to this cd as i write this review and i never remembered based on my scores from the songs that i liked this album that much

Somebody's Dissin':By Twiztid, good track here by Twiztid as usual. 5/5

Amazing Maze: By ICP another funny track and another that got left off AJB album, its about taking messed up people and sending them through the maze with J as the tour guide, the people get hurt as usual. 5/5

Old School Pervert:By Jamie Madrox which was for the Mr.Bones cd that never came out, its an good track. 4/5

Who?: By Psycho Rydas, again another track from Dumpin am not keen on. 3/5

Meat Cleaver: By ICP, Myzery and Twiztid, awesome song here, i feel ICP and Myzery have the best verses here, another album highlight. 5/5

Overall: I never knew i liked this cd so much, good rare cd get it if you can.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2005-04-08

i got this cd and though i'd heard most of the songs from online places i still loved it, its one of the best psychopathic records cd's ever... also rare. get it! mcl!

4 out of 5 stars A good CD but not a must have for all juggalos..........2004-09-22

I finally picked this CD up after who knows how long & gave it a listen. This is the first installment of the Psychopathics From Outer Space series that features rare cuts from ICP & Twiztid. Upon buying it i knew it had some songs i already have on other projects but i still bought it just because i'm a juggalo & i wanted it for my collection. Overall, the CD gives just what it promises: rarities and new tracks from the Psychopathic team.

The album begins with a the spaced-out "Dirt Ball", which is a great opener for the disc. It later reveals even more new ICP/twiztid material with tracks like "$50 Bucks", "The Amazing Maze" & a very fresh remix of the ICP classic "Red Neck Hoe". Other new material is found in the shape of a provocative Jamie Madrox solo cut ("Old School Pervert"), a relentless Eminem bashing ("Slim Anus") and a wicked collaboration with Ice T ("Dead End").

As for old material, the disc thrives with cuts hard to come by from Twiztid, including the juggalo anthems "Meat Cleaver", "Somebody's Dissin' U", "Murder Murder Murder", "She Ain't Afraid" & "Blam!". As for rare ICP cuts, there really aren't any to be found here since almost all of the ICP on this album is new or in the form of the Psychopathic Rydas ("R-U-A-Ryda?", "Who?").

Once again, this is a good CD but is now much outdated by other Psy releases along the way. If you don't already have this i'd recommend picking it up but if you alraedy own Twiztid's 'Cryptic Collection' you might not find half the disc that interesting.

4 out of 5 stars Former Fan.......2003-04-19

This is great album from ICP & Twizted, but it saddens me to hear people refer to The Amazing Jeckel Brothers as a good album. ICP's best album was Carnival of Carnage before they re-released it with two less tracks. After that the One disc version of Forgotten Freshness was best and also re-released with another disc, but two songs were cuts from the original as well. I'dd buy this cd because it was one of the last examples of what ICP used to be about. A true Jugalo would not be calling Jeckel Brothers or The Wraith a "Good Album."

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!!.......2003-02-18

I just want to say, I bought this album when it first came out (unfortunately it got stolen shortly after that, and I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE to buy since then...)But I LOVE this album, it kicks butt! I think this is one of the best from them after The Great Milenko!

3 out of 5 stars It's okay........2007-02-08

Don't get me wrong, there are some really BUMPIN' tracks on this disc but some of the songs get old after just a little while. Repetitive beats, soft vocals... ehh... kinda blend into the background. Some of the songs are hard to get into at all.
Yet, it is still worth purchasing if you can get it at a discount rate somewhere. Everyone WILL find at least a handful of tracks they really like.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME.......2006-03-17

Highly recommended to all juggalos. This features tracks by all of the Psychopathic crew at the time.
