I love this album.......2007-03-22

I love this album. I grew up in the 70's and find the music to be a lot of fun. They are the kind of songs you can snap your fingers to, tap your toe or sing at the top of your lungs!

It All Started Here.......2007-03-04

When it comes to soundtracks from popular artists that have nothing to do with the movie - and it can be argued that the motion picture was made to market the music - you have to start with FM.

The title track was composed and recorded by Steely Dan - Donald Fagen & Walter Becker - without any working knowledge of the film. There are a couple live tracks from Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers & Linda Ronstadt, but this two CD set is dominated by previously-released cuts from the darlings of the late 1970s arena rock scene.

The movie was a pedestrian look at disc jockeys at a FM rock station who are at odds with the corporate suits who want to dictate the on-air rules. It was criticized by several cast members because - they claimed - several serious sub-plots were edited out to better highlight this simplistic story. But with a focus soley on the ficticious radio station meant the old tunes by real artists would be the center of attention.

What is now a retrospective on one segment of FM radio was then a guide on how to lazily put together a movie and soundtrack with no effort to merge them into a solid, artistic package.

A Great Time Capsule.......2006-04-07

When this film/soundtrack came out in 1978, I was 24 and working on air at a radio station in the midwest. All of us at the station got a huge kick out of seeing a movie about what we did for a living. However, in all honesty, the soundtrack has aged MUCH better than the movie. As the other reviewers have noted, this album is a great time capsule of what was on the radio in the late '70s. And like several of the other reviewers, I, too, enjoy a great set of memories from listening to it. The fact that this album/CD is still selling almost 30 years after its release is a pretty good indicator that there's some great music on this one. A great addition to anyone's collection!

Exact recording of the reel from a radio station?.......2006-02-18

I love this album. All the songs, the entire mix of songs is the basic boiled down extract of the time. I grew up with this stuff and it just rushes back memories and nostalgic warmth. I am only slightly sad about the quality of the remaster, or was it even remastered? It sounds like the original radio reel they used in the 70's burned direct to CD, with Tape hiss and not much dynamic range. Fortunately I have software to soup it up, however most people don't so, in that regard, it could be considered an authentic reproduction, but, it does not sound as I should think it would. I actually tried to reach the man who was paid to put this to digital media, but have had no luck in reply or any response. I also don't know how many audio nit pickers are out there, but, if you know someone who knows someone, or anything, I would provide them a replication of the replication to exploit and give some input. With the original recording and playback device, it could have been better, but I assume the guy who got this gig for remaster may already know that. I'm not knocking him too bad I hope, it's just that, that analog feel didn't come through, so much as the tape hissss. Otherwise, and around all that, the songs are immortal echos of that time and it is a great mix.. Like going in a time machine and turning on the radio,, with no commercials.. Especially army ones.. lol..

Let me keep this short and sweet (just like the album itself)..........2007-03-24

The coolest, catchiest, most real and heartfelt fun songs you might ever hear. If you like this, try expanding your universe with the Subdudes...start with their "Annunciation" album perhaps. They are a band made up of older dudes than FM Static, so they are a lot less punk, but sound just as sweet and just as sincere.

Completely Ashamed.......2007-03-07

I was the hugest FM Static fan after hearing their previous release. I was so excited to get their new one. What happened to these guys? It's just not good! By the 10th track, they finally warm up, but still are not near the quality of the entire previous album. Many of the first 9 songs are just dumb. The lyrics are dumb and the music isn't much better. Maybe I'm missing what the guys of FMS were trying to accomplish with this release, but for the happy fan, it's a let down.

Not Worth the Wait.......2006-08-13

Towards the middle of FM Static's sophomore release, there is a tremendous song titled "Next Big Thing." However, the rest of the album is watered down, filled with ballads, and absurd lyrics. This would be tolerable if the songs were good, but only a few are. It seems like they are going through the motions on this disc, which is WAY below the standards they set on their debut album. The melodies are there, but the performances are lacking energy and it is way overproduced. The new Hawk Nelson or Stellar Kart CD is a better way to spend your money.

Good album, but not straight away..........2006-08-10

If you're buying the long-expected sequal to 2003's "What Are You Waiting For?" expecting an album with exactly the same formula (as I was), you are going to be disappointed.
Not to say "Critically Ashamed" isn't any good, because it is. But the initial spin I gave it left me feeling disappointed because it wasn't what I had been waiting for, for so long. After more spins though, I got over that fact and started enjoying the songs. Talking about the songs, let's get into a track-by-track review:

#1: "Hope The Rock Show Goes Good"
This is a classic intro, with a young relative of Trevor wishing him luck for the show.

#2: "Flop Culture"
First time round, this song sounds like it could be on "What Are You Waiting For?" with the rest of it's songs, music-wise. But the choice of subject in the lyrics isn't too interesting, it's more about dissing Michael Jackson, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears and MTV. I'd prefer that they stick to singing about girls, summer and school. Still, it's a catchy upbeat song.

#3: "Six Candles"
The second song on the album and already the first lower-tempo song. Strong lyrics and appropriate music accomanying them. This is when you first notice that this album is definitely going in a different direction than the debut album, as the lyrics are much slower than before and the intonation is not quite "happy".

#4 "The Next Big Thing"
This is one of the most catchy songs on this album and probably the one which is going to get stuck in your head frequently. Like Flop Culture, it sounds like a song you'd expect from FM Static, but the execution is once again that tiny bit different which separates it from the debut album material. It really is a sing-a-long track though.

#5 "America's Next Freak"
Another song which doesn't really have an energetic feeling to it, moreso a mature, emotional feeling. It does it well though, as it's just as catchy as the upbeat tracks on the album.

#6 "Tonight"
"Critically Ashamed"'s equivalant of "Hey Now" from the debut album, except this time the song isn't entirely accoustic. It's another emotional song which comes with strong lyrics.

#7 "The Video Store"
For me, this is one of the poorer songs. The chosen subject just doesn't seem quite right, obsessing over a girl you met once in a video store and never forgetting that day. It sounds kind of lame, and that feeling is amplified by the "Ah, ah, ah"'s in the chorus and the Fred Durst bashing in the second verse.

#8 "Girl Of The Year"
A fun song with fun lyrics. No important lyrics here, but it doesn't hurt the song. This is one of the songs which attains the "What Are You Waiting For?" feeling the most.

#9 "Nice Piece Of Art"
The song itself isn't brilliant, but it has a killer chorus which you look forward to from the beginning of each verse. It's another slow song though, of which it becomes apparant this far in that the album is 50% (or maybe a bit more) slower songs. They're all good though, so it's not a downside, unless you're expecting more of the debut album.

#10 "What It Feels Like"
This song isn't anything special. It's okay, but not the song which is going to be played the most on this album. There's nothing wrong with the lyrics, but the execution of the song is forgetful.

#11 "Waste Of Time"
This song surprised me, in that even though it wouldn't blend in with the other songs from the debut album (though it's not particularly slow like "Nice Piece Of Art"), I think of it as one of, if not the best track on this album. The verses and the chorus are great and the music sounds great as well.

#12 "Moment Of Truth"
The closing track on this album is an almost exact copy of the closing track "Hey Now" from the debut album. This is really not a bad thing, as the slow, accoustic "Hey Now" is one of my favourite tracks from that album. Therefore, this track is destined to attain the same status in my books. The intonation of the vocals is perfect and the guitar accompanying them sounds just like it should.

All in all, this album is far from a disappointment, once you get over the surprise of your expectations being off. The album was advertised by FM Static as "a summer album which will stick with you paired with the memories of the best summer you ever had", but it's not that. "What Are You Waiting For?" is, as whenever I hear a song from it, I remember Summer and Fall 2003 vividly. That album felt overall more energetic and bouncy to me.
One thing the successor has in common with it's predecessor is the squeaky-clean lyrics, but that's okay, because I wasn't expecting different as the band is classified as Christian Rock, and I if want to hear "tough" lyrics, there are plenty of other bands I listen to which can give me that. One could say that the change in this album from energetic bouncy pop-rock to slightly less bouncy and slower is simply the maturing of the band, but I don't need FM Static to mature; again, there are enough bands who mature with each coming album, and after all, FM Static *is* a side-project.

So, finally, don't think I'm advising against buying this album, I'm just trying to explain why I preferred FM Static's debut album more. I like this album a lot and therefore give it 4 out of 5 stars! Buy it, give it a chance, and I'm sure you'll like it as well.

FM Static has nothing to be 'ashamed' of. .......2006-08-04

I was a little aprehensive on purchasing this record because of my recent disliking of punk/pop music, much like FM Static's previous album, "What Are You Waiting For?". Don't get me wrong, I liked the album when I first bought it, almost 4 years ago, but I had started to out grow that type of music. Regardless, I was curious and ready for some new music. After listening to "Critically Ashamed" for the first time, I thought, "What have I done? Why did I spend my money on this?", but after a few more spins, I found myself loving the album more and more. There's a pretty big difference between this album and their debut album; the latter being more fun and catchy. But this album has it's own feel and sound to it that, I think, makes it just as good. The album has quite a few slow songs on it, but they're solid songs. The only track I don't really care for is "Flop Culture". The chorus and verses are nothing that you haven't heard before and the ending just drags on. But, the second track "Six Candles" compensates for that. After that is the up-beat "Next Big Thing" which stays true to FM Static's last record. "America's Next Freak" has a slower chorus and isn't as up-beat, but the lyrics and message are good. This song showcases Trevor McNevan's witty lyrics. "Tonight" is one of the nice, slower songs. The chorus is really good. The only think I don't like about this song is the keyboard during the bridge, an instrument that makes an appearance in the album a few more times than I would have liked. Track number 7 is my personal favorite so far, "The Video Store". The pre-chorus and chorus are very catchy. "Girl of the Year", "Nice Piece of Art", and "What if Feels Like", are other solid songs. "Waste of Time" is really the only stand out song, sounding a little more mature that the rest of the album. And then the closer, "Moment of Truth" is a fun, sweet love song that Trevor wrote when he proposed to his wife.

All in all, I give "Critically Ashamed" an 8 out of 10. It was a good effort, and although it's not quite as bouncy or catchy, I still think it will remain in my CD player for a while.

Classic Progressive Rock.......2007-07-04

I saw FM opening for RUSH in the 80's and loved the sound of the electric violin FM uses to differentiate their sound. This disc is a fine representation of their music. Listen to it with headphones and discover all the nuances of how they combine sounds to create that classic overture rock of the late 70's and early 80's.

Slash & Burn.......2007-04-06

In the late 70s, Canada's FM had a sound that was all their own--a sound that owed its dynamism to the essential tension between the fiery, new wave-influenced electric mandolin/violin of Nash the Slash and the prog-influenced keys/vocals of Cameron Hawkins. Sadly, the original line-up (along with the Slash and Hawkins, there was also drummer Martin Deller)would only survive just long enough for Black Noise to be released. Nash the Slash went on to an interesting--if often erratic--solo career, while Hawkins and Deller reformulated FM as a kind of prog/pop group with the addition of Ben Mink. But Black Noise is the ONLY disc by FM you'll ever need to own. Many reviewers here seem to not acknowledge the quite obvious influence of the then burgeoning punk/new wave movement on the architecture of FM's sound. But several of the songs on Black Noise almost sound like some unholy hybrid between Yes and Ultravox (particularly "Slaughter in Robot Village" and the killer opening track "Phasors on Stun"). There's hardly a wasted note on Black Noise, though the lyrics to many of the songs (courtesy of Hawkins) are often embarrasingly juvenile, without the least trace of irony or self-deprecation. As a consequence, Hawkins' lyrics are easily the weakest link in the group's otherwise astounding synergy. Still, the interplay between the Slash's riveting mandolin/violin and Hawkins' excellent Rick Wakeman-inspired keyboard work is at times electric. And Deller's percussion work borders on the Bruford-esque. Virtually unclassifiable at the time, Black Noise can now be seen as an attempt to bridge two disparate worlds: art and punk.

FM - Overlooked Band From Progregressive Rock Hey Day.......2007-03-27

FM was a progressive rock band out of Canada that always seemed to be just out of reach of making the big time. "Black Noise" was their biggest selling album and the single "Phasors On Stun" managed to get some airplay on U.S. AOR radio. I was never really exposed to much of their stuff back in the day, but when I was going to see the reunited band (minus Nash The Slash) at the North East Art Rock Festival last year, I decided to pick this album up. Although it sounds a bit dated now, it is still a solid album with well written songs that lean towards the more commercial end of progressive rock. The unique thing about this band is that there was no guitar (other than bass). The lead instruments were either Cam Hawkins keyboard and / or Nash The Slash's electric violin and mandolin. Slash's mandolin was amplified and sounded very guitar like, but at the same time different from an electric guitar. This gave the band a sound like no one else which earned them a solid cult following in the late 70's and early 80's. The music on the album is pretty much classic progressive rock. There are a few pop oriented tunes "Phasors" and "Journey" come to mind, several instrumentals, and a couple of longer drawn out epics. The subject matter of the songs mostly deal with science fiction themes. To me the highlight of the album is the almost 10 minute title track "Black Noise" that closes the album. This is what good prog is all about and, at least from my exposure to FM, is the band's crowning individual achievement. The album is worth owning for this track alone. I never understood why this band never got bigger than they did, as they seemed to have had tons of potential and were as good, if not better, than many of their contemporaries. Unfortunately FM has been relegated to B list status when it comes to the history of progressive rock. I think they deserved better and this album is a testament to what they could achieve. It was great seeing the re-united band last year at NEARfest.

Great melodic prog from Canada.......2006-05-13

FM is yet another band that has been unfairly relegated to the far corners of the prog rock niche, which is too bad - this 1977 release is a great example of highly melodic and synth heavy progressive rock. In a manner similar to another much more famous prog band from Canada, FM is a trio. The three musicians on this album include Cameron Hawkins (synthesizers, Rickenbacker bass guitar, piano, and lead voice); Martin Deller (Drums, percussion, and synthesizers) and "Nash the Slash" (electric violins and mandolin, glockenspiel, vocals, and effects). All of the musicians are very good and really crank out some tight performances. There are eight tracks on the album that range in length from 2'36" to 9'55". Overall, this is well written and performed progressive rock that sounds a great deal like the prog band England, not to mention UK (especially their Danger Money album from 1979). Melodies and harmonies abound, and synthesizer use is very heavy. In fact, there are points where a low frequency left hand synth bass line is used in place of the real bass guitar. As a bassist, I like to hear the bass guitar, but then again the synth bass lines are not too bad. The vocals are excellent and work well with the predominantly upbeat nature of the music. Although many of the songs have vocals, there are some excellent instrumentals as well and include the fantastic jazz-rockish piece Hours that features excellent soloing on the violin, mini-moog, and drums. The other instrumentals include Dialing for Dharma and the excellent Slaughter in Robot Village. The instrumental Dialing for Dharma is pretty interesting and starts off with a pulsating synth line that would not be out of place on an album by electronic composer Larry Fast. Slaughter in Robot Village is very different and features some great sounding Rickenbacker bass lines - my only wish is that this instrument had been used throughout. The 9'55" closing title track Black Noise is a very interesting piece that ranges from thunderous "tribal" drumming to spacey electric violin leads, and is a personal favorite. I guess that my only complaint is that the piece Black Noise ends so abruptly- the ending literally comes out of nowhere. Ah well. All in all, this is a great album that is recommended to all fans of melodic progressive rock.

Pebonr is wrong...very wrong.......2005-09-10

This is a classic from these obscure Canadian proggers. It is hard not to admire the outstanding drumming, keyboard and bass work and violin!!!! Pebozo is so removed from good music (i.e. Iced quief, Queenyrike, and the like) that he can't realize the greatness of these guys. City of Fear is a great album also.I have been unable to get a hold of Surveilance or Headroom. This CD is highly recommended.

One Of The Best Just Got Better.......2006-07-22

Just wanted to mention that the remastering on this CD is outstanding.
The vocals that were originally a bit too harsh have been smoothed out. - If you know this music, you know the parts - on "Standing By A river" - the vocals are much better now.
And the guitar and sax sound much more defined and separated.
No bonus material, same concert. But, it's worth the price to hear the concert with the improved sound.
I've played this CD more than I thought I would.

Outstanding concert tape, finally on CD available. This is a must for everoney who enjoys genuine music by a real band, who could write their own material and added some songs from others but played it their own way. This is fine example of a true band, at the height of their time. This is a ONE concert-recording, not being plucked from many performances and/or with many studio-overdubs. Listen to what this band could manage. The way they handled their instruments but more the interplay by the 4 members (on vocals/sax/harmonica, vocals/leadguitar, bassguitar and drums), every song recorded in only one take. Amazing. The music varies from straight blues to pop and (prog-)rock. It has so much to offer, everything on a good level. Those guys knew how to rock. Vocals are fine, guitarplaying excellent, rythmsection fills in and gives an added touch. Even the sax plays a role on its own. "Country Hat" is a solo only-number, on slide-guitar and sets Peter Haycock apart from so many other guitarists. Listen how this song developes from slow blues to full speed slide-play. And how it becomes immediately an integral part of the following up "You Make Me Sick". On every song he shows you what a guitarplayer he used to be, making his music a part of the song in a way you cannot describe, interwoven with the other instruments. What amazes you is that this IS a live recording, recorded in one take, no frills, overdubs, tricks etc. It gives you a sight of how real music was played. Even for the midseventies this is for real. Strongly recommended! Five stars is to less.

This disk was my introduction to Carlin and I was hooked. Full of classic hilarious lines "Tonight's forecast ... Dark," "Not anymore Monty" and introduced a lot of things our mothers would say. This was way before he became over political in his act and the majority of the material is gut-wrenching belly laugh humor at its best! George is definately the best comic genious of our time!

Carlin has such a quick wit and has observations about life that prompt one to say, "Oh yeah, I've never thought about it that way before." If you can get past his vulgarity and understand his unique humanity, then you will be able to appreciate this comic genius. He was not afraid and still is not afraid to tackle the very controversial topics such as birth control, drugs and others. His impression of radio DJ's is very funny and he has a good grasp of the English language.

George Carlin is definitely the thinking person's comic. He's always been right on target with his observations and tackles topics that many comedians - then and now - wouldn't even think to discuss.

In the 1980's, the rise of unabashed hypocritical tele-evangelists, and their flock, screamed for a sane answer and George was it ... and then some. He always had a bad habit of touching nerves with the raw truth.

His comedy is like a fine wine, it improves with time. FM & AM was the start of a new phase in his career - completely casting aside the clean-cut image and started telling it like it is (he couldn't be The Hippy Dippy Weatherman forever).

FM & AM is another classic George Carlin album from the early 70's. The album is broken up into the FM side that contains his new, hippie side and the AM side is a throw back to his earlier comedy roots. Both sets of routines show that Mr. Carlin could be topical and cutting edge in his humor focusing on counterculture issues of the day like use of vulgar language, drugs and sex or could slide into universal routines like mocking radio station DJ's, newscasts & Ed Sullivan. His "11 O'Clock News" bit is an absolute scream as he mocks the typical talking heads of local newscasts who take themselves way more seriously than everyone else does. In "Sex In Commercials:, he skewers the supposed wholesome images of products that use a subliminal message sex to get you buy their stuff. His Ed Sullivan routine is great. FM & AM shows that George Carlin is a comic who can inhabit numerous comedy styles and make us laugh at all of them.

Over the years, Philly radio station, WDAS FM has compiled and released some great old school CD's. They seem to have a knack for picking the perfect songs for continuity and listening pleasure. On this particular project, they collected an endless stream of pleasure in one place. From the classic ballad "This Must Be Heaven" by Brainstorm to "Your Body's Here With Me" by the Ojay's! You can play this CD and just lay back and enjoy the exceptional songs...one after another!

Best Slow Jam Compilation...Period........2003-05-30

While I don't know what WDAS is, I do know that they know good music. Buy this for "This Must Be Heaven" alone. Why has it taken so long for someone to show this song some love? This CD is better than any of the other "slow jam" compilations, due in no small part to its consistency. You will not need to skip any of these songs. While it does contain songs that are probably already in your collection (Fire and Desire, You Are My Starship), it also incorporates those songs that you've been waiting to appear on Slow Jams, Smooth Grooves, etc. (Kiss and Say Goodbye, Your Body's Here With Me). Whether you just want to relax, reminisce, or set the mood, this disc fits the bill.

At the end of his life, Franck composed three chamber music masterpieces which, along with the popular Symphony in D minor, placed him at the forefront of French composers of "abstract" instrumental music. This piano quintet is one of those masterpieces. Like the Symphony in D minor, it has three movements and it's constructed according to the principals of cyclical form, which simply means that the various movements share some themes. It's an absolutely gorgeous piece of music, and this award-winning recording is the finest available performance of it. Very Nice! And only $9!.......2007-06-06

I just got this CD a couple of weeks ago and it is a pleasure to listen to. The Franck Quintet is one of my favorites of the genre and it doesn't disapoint here. Fiery and tempestous, the first movement sets the tone for the entire piece. I would have liked the piano to come through a little more at the beginning (I realize it is probably a pianissimo phrase, I just thought it was a bit muddy). The second movement was lovely (Mr. Levinas comes through fine on the piano here) and I must add to the other reviewers remarks that Jean-Philippe Audoli's violin playing is exquisite, especially in the 2nd movement. The closing third is eery and suspensful and filled with tension and this ensemble gets the most out if it. Bravo all around.

I felt that Chauson piece - which I am not as familiar with - was charming, if not sometimes quirky, and brilliantly played, but a far cry from the drama of the Franck.

And all this for 9 bucks - what a steal!

Chausson's quartet is the gem.......2005-07-15

Like other reviewers here, I bought this disc for the Franck's quintet. But it turned out to me that I repeatedly play the Chausson's quartet when I put it on my CD player. For Franck, the performance here is passionate and intense, but I still prefer the cool and atmospheric interpretation by Richter and the Borodin quartet. And for Chausson, it is a really a work unjustly overshadowed by other French composers like Debussy and Ravel.

Chausson's quartet illustrates French romanticism at its best. The emotional yet a bit mystical atmosphere is already witnessed in the first few bars, and it progresses to intensive passions at the end of the first movement. And the climax of the work is the second movement Lento, which is calm and serene. This is the Swan Song of the composer. Chausson died when revising the third movement and it was completed by D'Indy. The mood ending the whole work does not match entirely with the previous movements. This may be the reason why some reviewers here think the piece is odd. Nevertheless, it does not diminish the achievement of the piece. And Quatuor Ludwig does a great job here in bringing this beautiful work to CD.

Coincidentally, Franck, Chausson, Faure, Debussy, and Ravel all left us only one string quartet in their career. And the first two should deserve much more reputation. I hope quartets specialized in the French repertoire like Ysaye Quartet will play them more in their concerts. I was glad that they played one movement of the Franck quartet as the encore piece in their Hong Kong concert in March 2005.

Oh boy!.......2001-11-30

Firstly, Franck's Piano Quintet is a masterpiece by any standards. Such passion. Try out the furious coda to the 'con fuoco' finale if you want an example. But the Quintet has you on the edge of your seat throughout. It is truly remarkable music and, in its demonic intensity, quite unlike any other 19th cent. French composition. The Quator's performance copes admirably with the extremes of Franck's dynamics. They are urgent when necessary but also elegant and refined. They drag you through this piece from the opening passage of the first movement to the riveting disintegrating concluding passage of the last. Special mention must go to the wonderfully eloquent and subtle playing of Jean-Phillippe Audoli. And Michael Levinas projects the difficult piano part with genuine individualism but does not overwhelm the texture of the Quartet players. This disc would be a must-buy at Full Price, but at Bargain Price there is no excuse for hesitation (P.S....the sound quality is good with a warm ambience and perfect balance between piano and strings). BUY IT!

Ravishing.......2001-11-17

The Franck quintet certainly is. Inspired by one of Franck's piano pupils, an apparently alluring young woman, the Piano Quintet is one of the most sultry works in chamber literature. From the passionate cry of its opening measure to the relentlessly driven last movement, a sort of "Chasseur Maudit" in which lust is the pursuing demon, the work was too much for its dedicatee, the sedate (at least in musical terms) Camille Saint-Saens. At the premiere of the work, in which Saint-Saens was soloist, he stormed off the stage, leaving the music behind on the piano.

Unlike Saint-Saens, Michael Levinas and the Ludwig Quartet clearly love this music and embrace its passionate nature with a special fire in their playing. And Levinas manages to get inside the difficult piano part to show that it is perhaps the most musical, as well as musically challenging, of all the celebrated 19th-century piano quintets.

The Chausson quartet, a work that was presumably incomplete on the composer's death, has an understandably unfinished quality, but that gives this very interesting piece an added mysteriousness. Not at all as firey as the Franck, it is a piece of proto-Impressionism in the style of Chausson's Concert: somewhat rambling, but filled with striking ideas and producing sauve sounds on the strings more anticipatory of Ravel than of Debussy.

The sound on this Naxos disc is not quite as polished as the performances, but it is certainly well above average. All around, a great bargain.

Stunning and passionate work.......2001-08-15

The Franck Piano Quintet is, without any argument, a passionate passionate piece. From its furious beginning (the opening theme from the strings) to it's pounding close (the 3 distinct chords at the end of the final movement) the quintet rages about in a fury of emotions. The Ludwig Quartet capture the pieces passion perfectly. They sweep through the first movement with eloquence, crashing through to it's clamoring climax. the second movement, although slow and relaxed compared to the first, is also quite a spectacle. Jean-Philippe Audoli's tone is stunning in this calm movement. The theme rings beautifully, building to another tense climax, to end peacefully and magically. The final movement is a passionate blur of music, racing through a recap of the entire piece, to a forceful and powerful end.... The Ludwig Quartet and Michael Levinas capture the essence of Franck's work perfectly, never missing a note. These skilled musicians create a beautiful sound together, even making my heart race as they play the beautiful quintet. I already own a recording of the quintet, and I was totally blown away by this version. The Chausson Quartet, although an odd piece, is put together well by the Ludwig Quartet. The soaring, disturbing movements are deep and, like the Franck, passionate. This collection of French impressionist work is not one to miss out on. There is beautiful music, amazing talent, and a killer price to match. BUY!!!!

This is not the best KKSF product but it is still very enjoyable. Whoever compiled the songs did an excellent job of "mixing it up" a bit. Definitely worth buying.

Now I have all 16 CD's these are a great collection I love the Radio station I miss it. I now live in Ga far from San Fransico but I can still enjoy the music. If your lucky enough to if you can find the other CD you will also enjoy them and make a great collection Enjoy!!

A disgrace to jazz........2006-02-18

While there might be deserving artists on this CD, there is one song in partiicular that makes the entire CD a disgrace to jazz: "Take 5" by XL. Most jazz entusiasts have heard the original version of this song by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. It was particular creative because it used five beats per measure (hence the name "Take Five") of the song rather than the traditional four beats that almost every popular song uses.

I was absolutely apalled when I first heard this cover on KKSF. XL had redone the song, but taken out its key element of having five beats and replacing it with the bleak four beats.

Call it what you will but this is not a collection of songs from a smooth jazz station being that no station can bear the name "jazz" when they play a song that defiles jazz as much as XL's cover. Moreso, they play this song to an extent when I have never heard them play the original "Take FIve".

Not recommended, don't buy it even if it is for good cause. 80% of the track selection is old, I mean OLD! I'd check out the other volume and other station's jazz CDs. I am disappointed.

Wow! I can't believe I got the chance to write the first review. This is one of my favorite albums. Actually, I just got it this past Christmas, but I've been listening to it enough for it to be one of my favorites. What's so great is the shear number of artists and different jazz styles that poke out at you, prodding at your inner-being. This is great music for parties and company, because you can get that great "mix" of sounds. Along with "Trio" and "In The Day", this is one of the better albums of the past year. Both those albums were smooth jazz tones put out by individual artists and not a series of artists, but they mix it up so well, no one knows the difference. This is one of the better jazz-exuding albums of the past several years, and I cite it as highly recommended to anyone who may begin to think otherwise.

Don't let them tell you who you cannot love..........2007-03-28

I was expecting this to suck considering everything they've done had been a step-down from the album before. But I think it was actually a nice step-up from Exit English (which was a total disappointments after Change Is A Sound). This album actually has fast songs again. And where as til this day, I still can't tell the difference between songs on Exit English, Dead FM has a lot of dynamics to it. The vocals are a little less abrasive. But the album is still energetic. The lyrics are still well-crafted political hymns (much unlike Against Me or Anti-Flag who have very simple cliche lyrics). Cool guitar work. Fast songs, slow songs. Most the tracks are have an upbeat feel. Decent drum sound. Bad bass sound. Thin guitar sound is pretty thin and low in the mix. But in the final process, the album sounds really together. Probably one of the best mixes, considering the vintage equipment used. Its a good album. Go buy it.

Along with Change is a Sound, this is by far the best of Strike Anywhere. I bought this CD the day it came out and immediately started playing it and syncing it to my ipod. Dead FM is a great CD and I have nothing bad to say about it. If you like Strike Anywhere (or punk rock for that matter) than you will like this CD.

I have all of Strike Anywhere's albums and I think that Dead FM is Strike Anywhere's greatest cd so far. It has a good production and all their songs are melodic and catchy. This cd is a cut above their previous albums musically. If you want to hear a good melodic punk rock band, listen to Strike Anywhere.

Thank God for Fat Mike. Every time I get depressed about the state of the nation, his Fat Wreck Chords releases an inspiring, combative agit-prop proto-punk album full of revolutionary zeal.

Listening to Strike Anywhere's new album Dead FM improved my day today. After reading about the upcoming ABC movie violation known as "The Path to 9/11", it was difficult for me to do anything. Yet one play of Dead FM had me up and slam dancing around my office while howling at the witty invectives screamed out by vocalist Tom Barnett.

Dead FM blends the angry, political bent of punk with a melodic hard core that makes for an unruly bit of noise guaranteed to have your landlady calling the cops on you. Dead FM is the first album they've made for Mike, having produced four very energetic albums for Jade Tree beforehand. Barnett's group consists of guitarists Matt Sherwood and Matt Smith, bassist Garth Petrie, and drummer Eric Kane. They all gleefully pound out strong iconoclastic beats to back up Tom's sharp blunts of commentary mixed with some harmonic backups that some may find out of place on an album as raw as Dead FM. Yet, this concoction works very well, allowing Barnett and his band to explore avenues that punk had until now not dared cross.

Much of the material here is extremely personal, including "Sedition", which chronicles Barnett's grandfather's unknowing role in the Manhattan Project and "House Arrest", a fine little paean to unjust incarceration. Three years ago, Barnett and his band mates were held in a Japanese jail cell. But Dead FM goes far beyond personal experiences, lampooning the idiocy of global political leadership. Much like Against Me! Strike Anywhere is a punk roots band, the kind of punk that was made before the major labels started throwing six-figure marketing campaigns at bands in the eighties to kill off the burgeoning movement. Both bands couldn't have found a better time to resurrect the original punk style.

Yes, Thank God for Fat Mike and Strike Anywhere. We're living in a time where political discourse is at an all time low and the entire prescription drug induced zombie population roams the earth in a daze of reality television shows and cutesy-pie pop divas. We need an infusion of adrenaline to get their hearts and minds working again. Strike Anywhere is just the band for the job.
