5 out of 5 stars Great for kids!.......2007-06-27

I'm generally not a fan of music "samplers," but opera can be tough to introduce to children. And hey--even adults played cards, ate, and talked through the recitative sections of the early operas while they waited for the next aria! So I feel that getting kids hooked on opera through great arias probably can't hurt (the next 10 years or so will determine whether I'm right or not). My 4-year-old loves this CD; it's a delight to watch her imitate Anna Moffo (the sincerest form of flattery, for sure). Highly recommended resource for introducing young kids to opera. More top picks: Siberell's Bravo! Brava! A Night at the Opera, and the Black Dog Opera Library CDs.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre Sound Quality.......2007-03-31

If you note the album was released in 1994, and includes selections from many years prior, you will understand that the quality of the sound engineering is not going to dazzle your ear.

It's a very nice collection to hum along to, but don't expect shivers down your spine as the sound quality is not sufficient to reproduce the dynamic range of these voices.

5 out of 5 stars I was pleased.......2007-02-18

I am by no means an opera expert, but found this to be a wonderful CD. Along with the songs I already knew I liked (such as a song from Carmen,) I found many others I enjoyed. In fact, Samson et Dahlila turned out to be my favorite. If you are just getting started or at any point in your adventure of opera, I would recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Famous Opera Arias.......2007-01-05

I was completely surprised in the product as well as the time in which it was delivered.

I would not only refer this seller but I will come back myself.

3 out of 5 stars Okay But.... - a review of "The Most Famous Opera Arias".......2006-08-18

My daughter (6 y.o.) and I like opera; but sitting for two hours to watch Turandot is just not within the realm of possibilities for my 4 year old son right now... so I was looking for an opera CD for the car. He will sit and listen to short arias.

This was the first we purchased and it is okay but not great.

Problem #1 - where is Wagner. No Wagner?
Problem#2 - Elena Obraztsova - she sounds like Carmen's grandmother. Rather matronly for a vixen (imho--lol)

Three Stars. [C+] Great Price and good sound quality for the car. The operatic styles of some of the performers are antiquated and frilly sounding, but I would probably buy this CD again.

Note: We purchased and really preferred "The # 1 Opera Album". It has more selections and better artists in our opinion. Also it's a two CD set. Just something to consider.

Since not liking the Scissor Sisters is tantamount to not liking fun, let's just assume that everyone already adores this band and go on from there, OK? The Sisters' hotly anticipated second full-length feel like a streamlined continuation of their debut. It's hard to imagine no one had ever called an album Ta Dah! before, but then these sexy troubadours have no trouble subtly reworking the past to make it almost-new and always joyous. They may have emerged in a brief window when campy pastiche rock seemed like the next big thing, but just as their friends Fischerspooner did with the electroclash "movement," the Scissor Sister possess an elevated enough sense of fun, popcraft, and good enough connections to carry them for years. Hell, the first track on this album, the wonderful confection "Don't Feel Like Dancin," was co-written with Sir Elton John, and it sounds like Abba, Fleetwood Mac and Xanadu all at once. Other tunes might have you thinking of Bowie or the Bee Gees or Prince or Pink Floyd or even the Carpenters, but only as cagily reimagined in a glittery, wonderful, post-Hedwig/ Velvet Goldmine world. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fan for life.......2007-06-26

I thought I would have a hard time growing to love another Scissor Sisters album as much as I loved their first one. Now that I've been immersed in it for a few weeks, I have to say that I am more in love with the group than ever! Their sound varies a bit from the first album - less songs that sound like an overlooked Elton John track from the 70's, (although the flavors of EJ can still be found intertwined in several songs); still a good bit of Bee Gees. But new to the mix are traces of Blondie and Queen. Just fantastic stuff, with the perfect Scissor Sisters twist of originality.

While I could review each track independently, let me focus on my current 2 favorites. "Kiss You Off" should be every woman's theme song, whether she is happily partnered (as I am) or not. It's a righteously angry, sexy-woman song. "Land of a Thousand Words" is a ballad worthy of comparing to last album's "Mary" in beauty of both arrangement and vocals.

Ta-Dah is as musically diverse and intelligent as the first album. It's also got the quintessential Scissor Sisters cutting wit, irony (e.g., cheerily reminding us that we were "born to die"), and daring musicality. With this album, they have solidified my adoration and have made me a fan for life. Now if we could only get them to tour more in the U.S.!!

4 out of 5 stars Ta-Dah cd by Scissor Sisters.......2007-05-14

This cd has a good selection of pop music including some danceable tunes. I have listened to it several times and have enjoyed the upbeat and lively tone of the music.

4 out of 5 stars Sophomore Release Holds Up Nicely........2007-04-14

Our favorite retro glam boys (and girl) are back, and they prove once again that they are one of the few good young bands in the mainstream pop genre these days. I must confess to still liking album one a little better than this one, but Ta-Dah has moments that work so incredibly well that I can't give it less than four well-earned stars.

As Miss Amanda said, I was completely blown away by the first cut (co-penned by Sir Elton as you've no doubt read here a million times already), and it reminded me something of old Leo Sayer disco hits, only better. It's addictive and fun to work out to.

"She's My Man" decidedly sounds quite a bit like Sir Elton's "All the Girls Love Alice" from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and is a bit grittier while "Lights" is almost Frankie Vallie "Grease"-styled sophisti-pop.

"Kiss You Off" features Ms. Ana Matronic and kicks some serious kiester, but my favorite songs on here have to be all the melodic and harmony driven novelty-styled ballads like "I Can't Decide," "Intermission," and "Might Tell You Tonight" because Jake Shears has such a clear, fluid, and pleasurable voice. The lyrics to "I Can't Decide" never fail to get a chuckle out of yours truly while those of "Intermission" leave one thinking about their life in general.

There's plenty of old-school disco influence throughout this disc for the glittery fun factor, but the band also shows a bit more of their pensive side this time around. My favorite song on this album has to be the beautiful, ethereal, and somewhat sad "The Other Side." It really is one of the best songs the band has recorded so far, right along with "Laura" and "Take Your Mama."

All in all, if you loved the first SS, obtaining Ta-Dah is simply a must. This group is intelligent, confidently and admirably pretentious, fu"nny, and truly talented. I love them and, by all rights, so should you.

3 out of 5 stars 3-1/2 stars -- The party continues.......2007-04-13

Scissor Sisters' self-titled debut album established them as the kind of band that really belongs in their own genre, complete with songs that although good, would really get little attention outside of dance clubs. Be that as it may, the quintet continues their exuberance with Ta-Dah.

While I wouldn't rate this as high as most of the recent reviewers rated it, it's still a solid album. The first three tracks run into each other though; not that they're bad (well, "She's My Man" is as bizarre as its title), but they really don't sound that much different from each other. Because of this, I was wondering if the album would sound like one long single, but fortunately, things get more varied throughout the rest of the album.

One surprising thing is that unlike on their first album, there are a few mellow tracks to be found on here, like "Intermission" and "Land of a Thousand Words". But the songs are still good, as are "Lights" and "Everybody Wants the Same Thing". And while "Paul McCartney" isn't a bad song, I don't quite understand where the title comes from (one reviewer suggested that the song is a fan letter to Sir Paul, but I'm not so sure).

While you might find a strange lyric here and there, Ta-Dah is still a good album from Scissor Sisters. It's not QUITE as good as their self-titled album, but if you didn't mind dancing to that album, you should have no problem doing the same to this one.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Go Wrong with this one!.......2007-04-10

Love, love, LOVE this CD! It's like the Beatles, Elton John, and the Bee Gee rolled into one (with a little bit of the B52's sprinkled in there). The songs are so different from each other and it's such an upbeat CD that I can't help but shake my booty each time I listen to it. It's definitely a mood lifter!

5 out of 5 stars Audio beauty and magnificence, Maria Callas.......2007-03-31

There are moments on this recording that are virtually audio heaven.
Ms. Callas' voice goes beyond the normal concept of beauty.

5 out of 5 stars sublime.......2007-02-14

she is an angel , a voice without parallel , a collection very interesting of arias from different masters.

4 out of 5 stars Good "Best Of".......2007-02-09

Maira Callas was never a favorite of mine, but she is notable as a passionate, (but sometime shrill to my ears) performer. This collection is a good single record tribute to her operatic legacy.

4 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Maria Callas.......2006-08-20

Second on my list for CDs that should be recommended for people who want to start on a long trail of Callas to the Carmen with Gedda and Prétre. This has perhaps the best excerpts of all time from Maria Callas. The 'Ritorna vincitor' and 'Una voce poco fa' are to be treasured. Any long-time Callas fan will find this CD of little to no interest, because anything they haven't heard before, there's a better, low-audio-quality version of somewhere. 4 stars for that reason.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Callas.......2006-07-11

Countless assessments of Maria Callas' life and career, as well as re-issues of some of her definitive recorded performances have been fueled by the 25th anniversaary of her tragic and prophetic death alone in her Paris flat on September 16, 1977. One of those such discs, this 17 track retrospective compilation from the archives of EMI is among the best. Every character she portrays is bought to life by her incomparible ability both vocally and emotionally. Enjoy!

If you are looking for peaceful, beautiful music this is for you. It is a delightful mix of some of opera's most memorable moments. Long time opera fans will be familiar with most of the arias and newcomers to opera will recognize music that has become identified with movies and commercials.

5 out of 5 stars superb! .......2007-05-12

If you love wonderful operatic moments then this cd is a great buy for all of the wonderful and spectacular music on it. You get two cds for the price of one great opera cd, and all of the talented singers that were taken and put on these tracks do definate justice to all of the composers listed. A great cd to add to your collection especially if you are an aspiring singer or a student in music. Absolutely Fantastic!

1 out of 5 stars Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28

There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.

4 out of 5 stars A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15

Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.

1 out of 5 stars This cant be the best.......2003-04-20

Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....

1 out of 5 stars TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!.......2002-11-27

True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21

This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

On behalf of Amazon I would definitely rate this music 5 stars. I thank Amazon for a perfect portrayal of his works. You shoppers out there might want to take a look at buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding!!!.......2000-10-06

I have come accross very few CD's that have 74 minutes of music that I enjoy. This CD is one of those. Mason Jones does a great job on Morceau, everyone likes danse bachannalle, the piano concerto is great, it's just a really enjoyable CD to own. I recommend it highly, it's one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Great Selections, So-So Collection.......2000-06-23

As all good elementary school music teachers know, Saint-Saëns could evoke emotions from a rock. I don't know if it's his masterful command (or creation) of the idioms of music, or whether it's the formal structure of his compositions, but there's never any confusion about how one feels when listening to this Apollo.

This Sony recording supposedly collects his best. It does and it doesn't. The "Danse Macabre"--a perennial Saint Saëns fave--is definitely better than any others on the market--crisper, livelier, and ... er... creepier. And the Bacchanale is also superbly done. (Don't take my word for it though--you can compare these yourself from the various samples.) But as great as these individual pieces are, Sony failed to bring to the "Swan" the rest of the zoo from "Carnivale des Animaux," and, worse, they forgot the "Aquarium," too! Plus, the "Organ Symphony" *must* be heard in its entirety to sound like the serious piece of music that it is.

I haven't found the noumenal Saint-Saëns collection yet. But this one surely isn't phenomenal.

4 out of 5 stars Classical is the best.......2000-06-22

It's composition very good. Thanks Sony for this great album.

1 out of 5 stars Every song sounds the same.......2007-04-13

My husband and I buy many Italian CDs so we think we have good judgement after so many purchases. We were somewhat disappointed in this CD. Every song has the same instrumentation and basically sounds the same. We wonder even if the mandolins are "live" or just canned, they sound so tinny and the same each song. This CD could have used more feeling, romance, whatever...possible had there been some sensitive arrangements with solos, etc. Instead, it was the same bunch of mandolin sounds which made for a very boring CD, in our opinion. A few vocals would have helped the monotony, too. Would not recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Traditional Italian music.......2007-03-31

This is a great album of really very traditional Italian music. It is not anglicised but just like you hear when you go to Italian festas.

5 out of 5 stars Italian dinner music.......2007-03-08

Excellent....Perfect! We recently had an Italian themed dinner party and needed just the right instrumental background/mood music. Mandolins from Italy was perfect. We also needed it FAST. Althought shipping was not cheap, we received it on time and made our party a hit.

WELL DONE!

3 out of 5 stars Perfect for a themed party, or just background music!.......2007-02-03

Very cute! Romantic, uplifting, nostalgic background music for an Italian night with friends! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Just like my dad's music.......2007-01-09

I love this music. It takes me back to my childhood when my Dad played the mandolin and my uncle accompanied him on guitar. Some old Italian melodies and some new ones to sing along with. Very nice.

4 out of 5 stars Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Compared to many polyphonic early music styles (1300s-1485), this era (1500-1610) provides many memorable melodies.

4 out of 5 stars A wide variety.......2000-04-28

This is an excellent sampling of English madrigals. This presentation, given by an older roster of the Singers, is a nice introduction to the world of the madrigal, and English madrigals in particular.

5 out of 5 stars One Dude you can't sleep on........2006-10-19

As I've mentioned in many of my other reviews, hip-hop that originates from Houston has a close spot in my heart. DJ Screw's style of slowed-down, chopped up music hooked me upon my first listen of it, and even though he's gone now, the rest of H-Town continue to carry on his legacy of slow-tempo, syrupy music, with a slurry accent.

I've got a lot of favorites residing in Houston, ranging from Chamillionaire, to Big Moe, to Paul Wall, to Lil' Keke, to Lil' Pokey, among others. However, my favorite of the entire bunch is, ironically, the rapper with the least amount of ties to DJ Screw - Devin The Dude. I was turned onto Devin through Dr. Dre's 2001 record, like many others presumably were. His chorus on "**** You" was so explicit, yet so hilarious, and his verse was so smooth, I had to check this kid out. Finding out he comes from the H-Town turned me onto the cat even more, and once i listened to Tryin' Ta Live, I was hooked.

Devin The Dude is the smoothest emcee this side of .. heck, I really don't know who's smoother than Devin. Some would argue Too $hort is, but even the first pimp of rap had a hard time matching the charisma that resonates from Devin's body. Not only is this Dude the coolest thing this side of Smirnoff Ice, he also has lyrics to back it up; he may not be the mathematical emcee some backpackers fiend for, but he does have tight rhymes, laced with humor rarely found elsewhere.

Southern grooves are found all over this album, and hilarious tales are retold by the player you can never hate on. This album and To Tha X-Treme are both tight as hell, but I think this one may rank a little bit above it's successor, due to songs like "I-Hi" and "Lacville '79." Still, if you're one of the hip-hop heads who enjoys good music no matter where it comes from, Devin's sophomore effort, Tryin' Ta Live, is for you.

Another great record to have in your collection. I enjoyed it a lot. Fans of Too $hort should really be into this. Chances are if you like Short Dog you'll probably be into Devin for the same Reasons. Check it out and see if this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Rap not Hip-pop.......2006-08-14

Perfect name for this CD. this is an album that could have been written by you or me if only we had the talent. Instead of taken the Southern cop-out route, Devin decided to do what the great blues and country singers of the past did, and that write something EVERYONE can relate too and find entertaing at the same time. Instead of standing on a soap box and rapping about trappin, killin, and everything else a dumb black male is expectied to write about, he talks about not being able to get into the club cause hes unknown and broke, getting kicked out of the club cause hes too drunk, hoping his car will make it from point A to point B, trying to be a playa only to have it blow up in his face. All stuff that we've done and still do. Instead of saying hes the one that did all the killing he'll speak from the point of view of the person who heard something happen and rushed down to see what was going on. Instead of saying "I got all the Dro" he celebrates the fact that he found a bag underneath his couch seat. We've all been there.

OK im sure alot of you like who is this guy, NAH he cant be good i never heard of this guy!!! Well guess what sometimes you have to look for good music it wont always come to you. If you want to know what this guy sounds like i would say alot of his songs have an andre 3000 (from outkast) feel to them the way he uses his voice. This truly is mellow and flows beautiful i cant critisize this guy he is amazing, greatest songs of his i think are "see what i can pull" "doobie ash tray" and "its a shame ft poo bear" dont just buy this cd buy all three you wont be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars listening to this cd.......2007-02-19

this is a wonderful cd. i have it in my car and listen to it all the time. you wont go wrong buying this cd if you love the operah and great voices.

5 out of 5 stars If you are unsure about opera, this is where to begin.......2004-06-22

Many people are turned off of opera because of the nature of the beast - unknown tongue, the continual singing and particularly the sopranos whose voices are as piercing as they are diffdicult to understand. These selections are ravishing in their beauty. It has been estimated that 2/3 of all classical effort was put into opera. Thus it is not surprising that some of the best music ever penned can be found here, particularly those that deal with that most human of emotion - love.

The orchestration is wonderful, the voices emotional and quite sincere, the authenticity is present. It is difficult to surpass Verdi or Puccini in plumbing the emotional depths. All in all a good experience.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Opera CD.......2002-08-08

I'm so in love with this CD, I'm giving it to as many ppl as I can. It's a great introduction to opera for ppl who don't listen to it very often. It has all the great hits with all the great singers, who can make shivers go down your spine. My friends who don't know opera as much as I do love it too.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic.......2000-05-12
