5 out of 5 stars More Dave Attell than Dane Cook.......2007-06-18

This is one very funny concert, probably because he does push the limits. I have heard some people in here compare him to Dane Cook. Uhhh, I have a copy of Dane Cook's CDs and this one by Tosh is way funnier. Whereas Cook relies on being a cool buddy to the audience and relaying longwinded and contrived stories, Tosh tells jokes and he pushes the audience by saying things he knows they think are funny, but are perhaps a little afraid to laugh at in public. The smart humor had me just thinking more about Dave Attell, than Dane Cook.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-12

Daniel Tosh is a very funny comedian. I am a difficult person to please when it comes to comedy, but this is one that you just have to buy....and it comes with his CD enclosed which is also really entertaining. Only complaint is I wish the DVD was more than 22 minutes, but since the CD is included, it is worth the purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars You did it because you're whore!.......2007-05-08

One might not rush out and buy this album based on Tosh's Comedy Central Presents special. The problem with those specials is that you don't get a real feel for the comedian because they are often rushed to make the time limit and they always have to censor themselves.

This album is from a Southern California show and it's absolutely hilarious. Tosh has very unique takes on various topics and he does it with an attitude. On several bits, he will challenge the audience to the point of insulting them directly. His take on plastic surgery is brilliant and he basically tells every female audience member with fake breasts that they are whores! He's not an insult comic, so it's done with a sense of playfulness. All of his material is taken with that approach and he pulls it off.

Admittedly, his delivery and inflection is similar to Dane Cook. That's about where the similarity between the two comics begins and ends. I remember seeing Tosh in the late 90's. Dane Cook's popularity has been a more recent phenomenon. Daniel Tosh's material is very well-written, thought out and "edgey." I'm happy for Dane Cook's success, but he relies too much on physical humor and bits that are just observations with no real commentary.

I've had this CD for about 2 weeks and I've listen to it at least 6 times. I highly recommend it for people who love stand-up comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Does Dane Cook collect royalties from this?.......2007-05-01

It's a funny album, there's no question about that. But at least seventeen times throughout the album you will momentarily forget that you're not listening to Dane Cook. Tosh has lifted Cook's tone down to the last detail. Every once in a while he channels Jim Gaffigan for a moment, but 98% of the time it's pure Dane Cook. It doesn't mean he's not funny, he definitely is. I just wish he'd come up with his own thing.

Oh, and if it turns out that Daniel Tosh has been doing this way longer than Dane Cook and it's Cook who lifted his act from Tosh, then I apologize. But I'm thinking probably not.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Performer.......2007-04-23

I can't believe that, at the time of this writing, there are only 14 reviews of this CD. Daniel Tosh is, hands down, one of the brightest stars the stand-up industry has to offer right now and he will only get more popular when his next release hits stores this summer.

To sum up the cd, Mr. Tosh is an original. His material AND delivery are fresh, playful, edgy, and absurd all mixed into one fluidly entertaining package. This is a performer who has a unique idea of what his version of "funny" is and knows how to deliver it in a way that gets his audiences howling early and often.

Comedy Central Records, who has an extremely noble, albeit short, history of providing bright and original new comedians to the masses (the only noteably regrettable sidestep being Kyle Cease, and I'm sure the inevitable Carlos Mencia) really did the industry a tremendous service by signing Daniel Tosh to their team. He deserves every due he gets. Outside of the Dave Attell CD, this is probably the best album they have in their line-up.

Other than that, all you need to know is that the only possible way you can have a better time than listening to this CD is to see Daniel live at a club. I've seen him four summers in a row and hope to continue the tradition. I wish him the best and look forward to getting the next CD signed upon his next appearence in Denver. Now go do yourself a favor and pick up this Album!

Each of the dreadlocked prophets who made up reggae's "holy trinity"--Bob Marley, Bunny Livingston, and Peter Tosh--sang for "equal rights and justice." But Tosh, the trio's take-no-prisoners militant, came on the hardest. His voice held the threat of danger, turning sufferahs' dreams and Rastafarian complaints into urgent demands. All the tracks in this remastered 1976 set--Tosh's first for an American major and his first collaboration with drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare (who went on to become reggae's legendary "riddim twins")--instantly became anthems, not just in reggae, but within the international pop lexicon. Some vintage roots reggae may strike contemporary listeners as peace and love cliché, even naive. Not Tosh. Against the background of today's turbulent social climate, Legalize It still sends chills up the spine with the sheer spectacle of a great reggae warrior's refusal to bow. --Elena Oumano

5 out of 5 stars Wicked.......2005-09-08

"Legalize it", Peter's first solo album after he left the Wailers in 1974, is quite simply his best effort, with 1977's "Equal Rights" coming close and of course more socially and politically relevant. But on the scale of musicality, none touches "Legalize it". The hard-driving rhythm section of the Barrett Brothers...lead guitar from the 'steppin' razor' himself... finally Peter could express himself as a solo artist, free from the artistic constraints of being a Wailer and being in the shadow of his student, Bob Marley. Peter is not an 'egomaniac' as someone on this forum commented; he simply spoke the truth very bluntly and this was a bit too difficult for some people to deal with. Yes he did teach Bob to play the guitar; saying so made it sound like blasphemy. Could it be, as he asserted, that he was just too black for some people? I tend to agree... Nonetheless, this is one of reggae's greatest albums, definitely one that will always find it's way back to my cd player.

5 out of 5 stars Wolde Semayat - Son of Thunder.......2005-02-12

Peter Tosh's first solo album proved beyond doubt that this artist's talent and vision was far reaching enough to break through the small confines of his little Jamaican island to reverberate across the music world enjoying great critical acclaim being even more popular today than when it was first released.

As one of the original founders of the legendary Wailers, Peter Tosh always felt stifled musically and after Island Records decided to rename the group "Bob Marley & the Wailers" for international appeal it was more than the angry rebel's pride could take. Tosh stayed with the group for their first two albums, contributing much to their initial success with gems like "400 Years," "Stop That Train" and the mighty "Get Up, Stand Up." Not to mention his incredible ability with the guitar, giving the band its original edge. His amazing compositions for songs like "Concrete Jungle," and "Stir It Up" are irreplaceable.

Becoming more disgruntled with all the attention Bob Marley was getting, Tosh finally left the band along with Bunny Livingston to pursue his own solo career. If their were any skeptics as to whether Peter Tosh could make it as an international star without Bob Marley, they were shamelessly silenced in 1976 as "Legalize It" showed that Tosh was more than capable of holding his own. Of course, that's an understatement. The truth is, "Legalize It" has become one of the most colossal Reggae albums of all time!

A photograph of the 6'3" Reggae singer curled up in a field of ganja (perhaps his own), smoking the sacramental herb of the Rastafarian religion in his pipe adorns the cover sleeve. His premature "dreadlocks" crown the head throwing shadows over his eyes; the cover of this album is worth the entire CD! The yellow border saying "collector's choice" that used to outline the cover has been dropped for the CD's reissue making the picture larger.

The songs included in the set are remakes of the artist's most popular singles during the early 70's trying to develop his own solo career while working with the Wailers at the same time. The psychedelic title track opens the album followed by the stunning "Burial." "...you want I comma comma funeral, yet no one bury I..." he sings (Rastas don't believe in attending funerals). "Why Must I Cry" is one of the few love songs Peter Tosh has and "Igziabeher" is an absolute masterpiece. Also check out the countryfied "Till Your Well Runs Dry."

A couple songs are a bit naive (almost like children's songs) but overall a classic album.

5 out of 5 stars A Legendary Debut.......2004-12-04

Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" shook the musical world with its fiery messages and its bold honesty in the ideal to legalize marijuana. Never before had an album been so outright in its message. "Legalize It" was an instant success with songs like its title track alongside the somber, dark remake numbers like "Burial," and "No Sympathy" (both originally done with the Wailers in the 1960's). Peter Tosh had now become Bob Marley's rival, and although he remains underappreciated, "Legalize It" shows Peter Tosh's legendary work and his promise to come.

For all Peter Tosh's great vocal texture and wonderful songwriting, he's always seemed best in a live setting. This collection of 13 well-regarded songs--as well as a live acoustic version of "Get Up, Stand Up" and one unreleased track--only shows more firmly how great Tosh was as a songwriter and singer, but it also shows why he was often at his best live. When caught in concert, Tosh reached feverish jubilance and intensity, as Captured Live attests. But these studio tracks divulge a split, sometimes overproduced, personality: half-brilliant and half-envious (or incredulous) that he hadn't reached the commercial peak of his former Wailer-mate Bob Marley. There are standout reggae champ tunes, the original "Get Up, Stand Up" and "Downpressor Man" among them, and then there are lots of middling works that beg the question of why Burning Spear or Lee "Scratch" Perry haven't reached the spotlight the way Tosh did. If you're a Tosh fan, this is a great single-CD set of works that count as catalog staples. --Andrew Bartlett

THE MAN IS A PROPHET. Anyone who loves reggae will love this album

2 out of 5 stars Most of the Best.......2007-03-02

Released by Sony's Columbia/Legacy imprint, this collection primarily focuses on songs recorded 1976-1978, taken from the albums "Legalize It" (1976), "Equal Rights" (1977), and "Bush Doctor" (1978).

SCROLLS OF THE PROPHET: THE BEST OF PETER TOSH consists of 15 songs, most from the late 1970s; songs are not in chronological order. Disc packaged in clear jewel case; total running time: 72:46. Booklet includes an essay by KROQ's Native Wayne Jobson, several small b&w photos, and track information (recording dates for all but track 11, albums of origin, and songwriter credits). Sound quality is good.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are from "Equal Rights"
Tracks 7, 9, 12, and 13 are from "Legalize It"
Tracks 5 and 8 are from "Bush Doctor" (track 5, "(You Gotta Walk And) Don't Look Back", is a duet with Mick Jagger)
Track 15 is from "Honorary Citizen" and track 10 is from 1981's "Wanted Dread or Alive".
Track 14 is a 1964 version of "One Love" by Bob Marley & the Wailers featuring Peter Tosh (an up-tempo version different from the "One Love/People Get Ready" Bob Marley recorded in the `70s)
Track 11, "Mystery Babylon" is "an updated version of Babylon Queendom".

This is far from a comprehensive compilation (two of my favorite songs, "Where You Gonna Run" and "That's What They Do", are not included), but it is enjoyable, and a decent tribute to the late great Peter Tosh.

5 out of 5 stars I prefer Peter Tosh.......2007-01-19

While I've been listening to all kinds of music my whole life, I find Peter Tosh to be more of a REAL representation of the struggle of the Rasta man than his fellow bandmate Bob Marley. Bob's music is great, but lost some of it's grass roots meanings the more popular it got. Peter Tosh seems to be more consistant in his beliefs and songs than any other singer I've heard.

I give this album (and all the other Peter Tosh albums I own) 5 stars simply out of respect for his life and his never ending struggle to keep it real.

5 out of 5 stars Scrolls of the Prophet.......2006-01-12

"Scrolls of the Prophet" is the Best of Peter Tosh. This is really all that you need if you are a normal fan or are interested in Tosh. It is a good intro to his career. You may want to purchase more of his individual albums after hearing this CD.

This best of Tosh CD starts out basically where Bob Marley left off. If you are a fan of Bob Marley's "Legend", or if you're a fan of good reggae, this would be a good purchase. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars good compilation of Peter Tosh.......2005-10-13

when I want to hear reggae music, I have always preferred to listen to the older, "original" reggae stars, Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Decker, and, of course, Peter Tosh. This is a good compilation of his work and a good way to get introduced to his music. While he never approached the fame or influence of Bob Marley, his music holds its own and is great to listen to.

Even though Captured Live might be Peter Tosh's greatest recorded gift, this 1977 studio album was his best--by far--away from the stage. Equal Rights opens with two great salvos, "Get Up, Stand Up" and "Downpressor Man," both of them politically unequivocal in their support, aptly, of human rights and political equity. In his post-Wailers days, Tosh seemed ever in dialogue with his conscience and his obsession with Bob Marley's fame. Tosh sought a place for himself somewhere between reggae and pop (check out the Mick Jagger and Tosh duet, "(You Gotta Walk and) Don't Look Back" on the hits pack Scrolls of the Prophet). In itself, such a desire isn't at all surprising, but it did impact Tosh's music even on his best studio album. But even with any wrinkles, Equal Rights holds a spot firmly as one of the best reggae albums of the 1970s. In this reissue, it comes with a pair of live bonus tracks, "Pick Myself Up" and "African," both recorded live and charged with the best Tosh energy. --Andrew Bartlett

This is probably the best reggae album I ever bought. For reggae or Peter Tosh fans this album is a must have. I've heard other version of Get up, Stand up songs played by others but the one in this album is the best I ever listened to. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2007-06-14

There really is no reason to read the reviews for this album.
You should be listening to it, now.
You can't listen to one song without listening to the entire album.
EVER.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-10-19

This is required listening for any reggae fans and a must have in any reggae collection. Peter Tosh is way underrated for some odd reason, but this album will surely make anyone interested in reggae a fan. Tosh's version of "Get Up, Stand Up" is arguably the best version there is (or, at the very least, a great alternate version). Follow that with tracks as good as "Downpressor Man", "I Am That I Am" (my favorite), and "Stepping Razor", and the CD never lets up. The lyrics are very political and relevant even today, about 30 years later. The CD features 2 Live tracks, "African" and "Pick Myself Up" that were not available on the old cassette, and it's definitely worth upgrading to CD for them.

5 out of 5 stars 6 Stars .......2005-09-08

Morality weighs on this album. Peter Tosh is the black equivalent of Michael Moore. Move over Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Marcus Garvey, Fred Hampton, and any other black leader (except for maybe Malcolm X) Peter Tosh had the most current and staunch and relevant voice for the scattered people of Afirca. I'd say that this album has a jazz feel to it. The photos in the remastered edition booklet are worth the price alone. Peter Tosh was all powerful. The influence of the album Mystic Man inspired me to quit drinking soda. Listen to this man, and see if he grows on you.

5 out of 5 stars Worthwhile addition to your collection.......2005-02-27

The slowed down almost spoken version of Downpressor Man nearly makes it worth the purchase price alone. Sure I've got most of the tracks on other Tosh collections, but these recordings are excellent variants.

Peter Tosh is one the the best reggae artists that ever lived an this album is another example. Great songs, amoung my favorites are mystic man, the day the dollar die, crystal ball... Great album.

5 out of 5 stars Mystic Man.......2007-01-04

For all loyal serious Reggae fans, this should be in your collection right along with all Bob Marley's music.
Peter Tosh was a part of The Wailers before going out on his own. His style is his own, but the influences are audible, and he still covers many Marley songs.
This is one of his better CDs, and very enjoyable. Peter is one of the early artists when Reggae first gained popularity in the U.S., and this cd is a good example of his talent.
Try it ..... you'll like it!

5 out of 5 stars His greatest........2005-09-08

I rate Mystic Man as the greatest because of the soft harmonies that he sings on "The Day the Dollar Die," and "Crystal Ball." His singing reminiscent of his ska days. I am surprised that they didn't release the 12minute live version of "Buckingham Palace." I think that Peter set out to make this a concept album on future events. "Can't you see," is a good track, but the original version (which is better) can be found on "The Toughest" from Heartbeat Records.

5 out of 5 stars Mystical Powers from the Bush Doctor.......2005-03-06

"Mystic Man" can be called Peter's finest studio work in the Rolling Stones Records and in my personal opinion; in his whole musical career. A vast improvement on "Bush Doctor" with more originality and less cross over material, the second album for the Stones level shines with a Peter returning to a more obscure and roots musical form.By the original release year in July of 1979 the album and tour was garnishing positive reviews, what did not happened a year before with "Bush Doctor" where critics had claimed Peter had gone soft and entering into the world of pop. "Mystic Man" highlights include "Recruting Soldiers", "Jah Say No", "Crystal Ball" and of course; the title track. The album was recorded in Jamaica at Dynamic Sound Studios and finished at Sound Mixers in New York city. Musicians included the golden age bedrock of late '70s reggae, Sly and Robbie on drum and bass, along with five members of Stax-style horn selection, the mighty Mao Chung on guitar, Robbie Lynn on keyboards, a female backing trio and the Tamlins (first collaboration with Peter). As always,Tosh's talk goes back to the oppresion of the masses; as he once said to an american journalist "My lifestyle can never change no matter how much money I make. I'll get more aggressive against imperialism, against the system that is set to brutalize, victimize, exploit, kill and do everything that degradating".
Peter Tosh's 1979 album gives us the right ammunition to fight on, even in these days.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Tosh's Message In It's Purest, Most Beautiful Form.......2005-02-24

After the success of "Bush Doctor," from 1978, Peter Tosh released "Mystic Man" as his second album for the Rolling Stones' label in 1979.

Here, Peter Tosh's message is pure, unedited, and unable to be misinterperated. His millitancy, spirituality, and anger shine through here clearer than on any of his albums, particularly with the hard-hitting songs "Recruting Soldiers," the title track, "Mystic Man," and my personal favorite, "Fight On". Songs like "Recruiting Soldiers," "Jah Say No," "Fight On," and "Rumors of War," are all beautiful, blunt commands for African freedom by any means nessecary, with "Fight On," being the most anthemic and straightforward.

The title track, "Mystic Man," is simple and spell-binding as Tosh sings with spirituality about his devotion to Rastafari and African Freedom. One of the song's main themes, however, is his dismissal of a Western way of life, casting away all Western foods like hamburgers and soda, and deadly drugs like heroin and cocaine.

"Can't You See," one of the album's best tracks, is a splendid, rock-oriented cover of an old song Tosh made with the Wailers in 1969 while songs like "The Day the Dollar Die," and "Crystal Ball," address Tosh's impending prediction of doom as the World becomes engulfed in conflict and poverty as well as the danger of money.

"Buck-in-hamm Palace" is one of Tosh's famous pro-ganja tunes, driven by a danceable beat and covered with spirituality, where he sings of smoking marijuana with the queen of England, truly one of Tosh's most controversial, and thus amazing songs. The bonus tracks are several fine remixes any listener will enjoy.

"Mystic Man" is my favorite Peter Tosh album with its raw millitancy, spirituality, honesty, and strength. I feel this is Peter Tosh's finest work and I know for a fact that not one fan will be disappointed with "Mystic Man,".

My favorite two songs are "Don't Look Back," and "Lessons in my Life." I used to love "De Ha Fi Get a Beatin," until I discovered the earlier version on Arise Blackman Arise. I loved that version until I came across the original on The Complete Wailers 67-72 Vol. 9 "Freedom Time." That one has the original "Steppin Razor," and "Burial."

5 out of 5 stars Amazing is Not Fitting Enough.......2005-02-24

Peter Tosh's "Bush Doctor," from 1978, kicks off with the amazing hit-single duet between Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones and Tosh himself, the cover of the Temptations' "(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back," having recently been signed to the Rolling Stones' own record label after his infamous post-One Love Peace Concert beating.

"Bush Doctor" finds Tosh with his brilliant trademark millitant and deeply spiritual stance, covering several old songs he had made with the Wailers years before such as "Dem Ha Fe Get a Beatin," "I'm the Toughest," and "Soon Come". Tosh also has several stellar original numbers like the hopeful "Pick Myself Up," the haunting semi-acoustic "Creation," and the pro-ganja title track reffering to his beating, "Bush Doctor," with Keith Richards on guitar. Richards also played guitar on the underrated, solemn hit, "Stand Firm".

The bonus tracks, though largely fantastic extended and remixed versions of the album's songs, (and a trippy instrumental rendition of "I'm the Toughest,") did contain one entirely original: the original, previously unreleased version Tosh's tale of betrayal by a friend, "Lesson In My Life," which was remade and released on Tosh's final album "No Nuclear War," in 1987, just days before his murder by a friend, in fact.

Bush Doctor is the point where Tosh fully secures his international stardom and notes that he is a force to be reckoned with in the world of music. This is one of the essentials for any Peter Tosh fan. Those who purchase "Bush Doctor," are sure to play the classic album through time and time again, hands down.

5 out of 5 stars HUGELY ENJOYABLE.......2004-09-29

This album does not have a bad track on it. Peter Tosh's greatest album is Equal Rights, but this is more accessible to new reggae fans or even new Tosh fans. It is a lot of fun because of the duet with Mick Jagger, which opens the album. The rest of the album is excellent, especially the song Bush Doctor, and the extra tracks are a fine addition. It also has the coolest Peter Tosh sleeve (along with Legalize It!) If you want to check out Tosh, this is an excellent place to start!!!
If you're a Tosh fan and you don't have this, what are you waiting for??

5 out of 5 stars Pick Myself Up !.......2004-04-22

This album is an interesting mix of political protest, religious soul and love songs.

The most memorable song for me is `Moses- The Prophets'
Filled with the most incredible spiritual imagery, I can never forget the powerful words:

"Do you remember Moses
Do you remember Moses
Him no ded
Him no ded
I se Him no ded
De man depon earth still
De man a trod earth still
De man depon earth still
Watchin all de wicked, dem a gone."

"Creation" is another powerful spiritual hymn.

There is the "(You Gotta Walk) Don't Look Back" , a fabulous duet with Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger. The plea to legalize marijuana in "Bush Doctor", and even love songs like `Soon Come' carry Tosh's tough edge.
Another inspiring poetic song is `Pick Myself Up'-one of the best self-help songs up there.

A definite must have in a complete reggae collection.

5 out of 5 stars the great peter`s classic in a new form.......2003-07-16

When peter tosh signed to rolling stones records he was well aware of its significance in the world of international music. The duet with Mick jager on You`ve gotta walk (dont look back)gave the album an instant hit. The album is a mixed material of old wailers music and new songs, backed by the fabulous rythm twins "Sly & Robbie".Maybe the most interesting song of this new packaging is the unrelesed version of "Lessons in my life", with a laid-back Tosh on vocals, the song was later released on his "No nuclear war" album. The dub mixes are interesting and "sly and Robbie" supremacy on the rythm section is quite solid and innovative. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful remix of classic Peter Tosh.......2007-06-14

I had lost touch with the many of my old favorite Peter Tosh recordings during the world's transition from vinyl to digital devices. I have been slowly rebuilding my library. So, I have owned this album on vinyl for 20 some years, I was blown away by the new version. More political commentary by Peter than I remember and outstanding renditions of all of the songs.

I highly recommend this album.

5 out of 5 stars 'Rastafari Is'.......2006-07-26

I realized I haven't written any reviews for music and this is an artist I've been listening to from my earliest beginnings. I don't know who the best musician is, the choice is subjective. But Peter Tosh to me is the greatest ever. 'Rastafari Is' (the live version) and 'Not Gonna Give It Up' off the 'Mama Africa' album are the two greatest songs ever made. Music like any other medium is directive. The Orisha Tosh directs us to righteousness, intelligence and upfullness. Buy the cd and the concomitant dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Hands Down the Best Live Album of All Time.......2006-06-06

Once Again, a broad claim. But, this truly is the best. Before My personal Favorite was "It's Alive" by The Ramones (With "Where's the 10 1/2" by Black Flag coming in a close second) but this album blows both of those away. I personally always preferred to Peter Tosh to Marley after the Wailers, and this is one of the reasons why. The actual sound is incredibly crisp, clean, and sounds better than in the studio. Now most of the time, I don't believe in live albums being superior in any way to recordings- there very rarely is any extra energy in live recordings. This is one of the exceptions. You can almost cry when you ear the beautiful, passionate energy coming out of his speakers. An essential to any Roots Reggae compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Captured Live "AWESOME".......2005-09-06

This DVD is awesome! Tosh is the at his best live! His voice is like no other. Tosh was ahead of his time. I thought it was awesome that he spoke his mind. It was such a loss to the world when this guy was killed.

5 out of 5 stars It Doesn't Get Better.......2005-08-05

First, "Complete Captured Live" has perhaps the best sound and production of any live concert recording I have ever heard. It actually SOUNDS better than most studio recordings. The drums are clean, crisp and in your face; the bass is perfectly placed and full; and the entire mix is well balanced and pristine.

Second, the song selection is excellent, focussing mostly on songs from Mama Africa, probly Peter Tosh's most artistically realized group of songs.

Third, Peter Tosh's vocal performances are astounding. His voice is in fine condition, his phrasing is spot-on, and his delivery is remarkably confident, assured and strong. Peter Tosh was a big man (6' 3") and he possessed a husky and very masculine voice that emanated deep from within his chest. In these songs, he sounds like a giant who could bend a microphone stand into a pretzel with one hand.

This CD has really made me re-analyze Tosh's work and place in all music, not just reggae. By the time this 1983 concert took place, Peter Tosh had been writing songs, singing and performing for nearly 20 years and it is obvious that by 1983 he had honed his art to a razor's edge. Remember that most American and English rock musicians of Tosh's age (Tosh started writing and recording around 1964) were already burned out, dead, or drugged out by age 38, milking their "greatest hits" of years past or making crappy, forgettable new music their fans did not want to hear. But here, in August 1983, Peter Tosh delivers a concert dominated by freshly written material that is among his best and delivers a live performance that is probably his personal best, one of the best ever in reggae music, and one of the best recorded live concerts in any genre. Even his one chestnut ("Get Up Stand Up") is recast in a crushing version that is miles from "sunny reggae style" and owes more to heavy metal and punk in its arrangement and ferocity. The Jamaican "rude boy" was the original punk of music (see The Clash). Tosh was a rude boy but he was disarmingly smart and a dedicated craftsman of his art. And although he smoked more weed than many small European countries the stuff seemed to make his art stronger and sharper rather than weaker. Go figure.

Peter Tosh's art was as a writer and singer of politically charged songs that still worked as singable songs with effective and catchy melodic hooks. In this arena, he has almost no peers. While Bob Marley shares the prize with Marvin Gaye for some of the best sensual songs (an arena Tosh rarely touched), Peter Tosh practically owns the political song and could be said to have invented the genre and taken it its highest level of development. His review of his early work on the 1976 album "Live & Dangerous Boston 1976" shows how in his late teens and early 20s Tosh had already mastered the craft of marrying the political with the singable and danceable. As anyone knows who has tried to write songs with a political tint, it is very rocky terrain and fraught with artistic pitfalls (just ask Bruce Springsteen). It is a genre of songwriting that is horrendously difficult to do well without sounding preachy, dogmatic, cliched or annoyingly self-righteous. Peter Tosh succeeds repeatedly by using simple, singable language:

"Africa is the richest place
But it has the poorest race
And to me it's just a disgrace
Just a disgrace.
That's why I'm not gonna give it up.
I will be fighting.
I've got to be fighting
I'm always fighting
Until Africa and Africans are free."

The above, from "Not Gonna Give It Up" works so well because in this concert Peter Tosh sings the words with amazing force, strength and honesty with a twinge of tenderness and sadness underneath. In this song, and others ("Mama Africa", "African" and "Pick Myself Up") Peter Tosh melds the folk, soul, blues, gospel and reggae vocal stylings into an amazingly effective whole.

Having not listened to much reggae -- or Peter Tosh -- for 15 years I was able to hear this CD with very fresh and open ears. It totally blew me away.

Tosh's speech (about 3 minutes) called "Peter's Rap" is a hidden gem of force, bluntness, braggadoccio and humbleness. What starts as a rant about record companies (ala Tinsel Town Rebellion by Frank Zappa) quickly unfolds to a much wider and deeper palette until he finishes with the statement (to folks in Los Angeles) to prepare for World War III. The crowd clearly does not know whether to cheer or what to do. And he says "it will not happen to me, it will happen to you because Rastafari have already fought the first, second and third world wars." It is obvious here where Jamaican political dub poet Mutabaruku turned to develop his own craft. Check him out too.

While it first sounds self-serving and self-pitying, Tosh's rant about record companies disrespecting reggae music and Jamaican singers and songwriters -- and Tosh himself -- is true. The music has always (and still) has been treated by record companies as novelty music, exotica, silly songs that are dancy and Bob Marley. Tosh wanted his music, his country's music and his own songs to be taken seriously and treated with the deference they deserve. Tosh's best songs and lyrics achieve a level of art that fully merits the treatment he felt they earned.

The closing and encore song ("Mama Africa") is a stroke of genius. Most artists save their final song in a concert for their "big hit" that everyone knows, is waiting for and came to the concert to hear. Peter gives the final song slot to a brand new song, 9 minutes long, that many in the audience had not yet heard. And he tears the house down with it. Using a very light and "old fashioned" rock-steady beat, "Mama Africa" could perhaps be Tosh's best song. It is tough, tender, heartfelt and his singing contains a plaintive vulnerability he rarely let out. For a man whose parents abandoned him as an infant -- as a boy growing up with no mother or father -- the words he sings here as a grown man are amazing:

"I've been waiting, yearning, looking
Searching to find you.
I've been crying, praying hoping
That I may find you Mama.

You're my mother Africa
You're my father Africa.

I'm proud of you Mama
I love you Mama
I'm proud of you Mama
I love you heavenly."

Rarely in any music has the personal and political been fused so tightly, perfectly and heartfully as in this song. Walt Whitman declared "I contain multitudes" -- Peter Tosh did too.

This CD gives a picture of Peter Tosh at the very height of his power and it is awesome to behold.

The only thing wrong with the CD package is that it stupidly and inexplicably does not list the names of ANY of the musicians performing with Peter Tosh. What elaborate double CD package of an historic, live concert does not even MENTION the names of the players (even in tiny type)? Interestly, the name of the producer is VERY prominently placed all over the package. Go figure.

Peter Tosh was a fierce and gentle giant. He is very much missed in the world he was taken from by a hail of bullets in 1987.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2006-09-24

I love Tosh and I was fortunate enough to see him perform live several times before he died. That said, this is a very uneven release. To be sure, there are top shelf songs here that belong in any Tosh collection, including the spiritual "Rastafari Is" (although I like the extended, heavy, live version included on Complete Captured Live better), "Wanted Dread & Alive," "Reggaemylitis," "Coming In Hot," and "Guide Me From My Friends." An especially welcome treat for me is the inclusion of "Oh, Bumbo Clot" on the remastered version of the CD - this is a scathing Tosh song that he would sometimes perform live but was never released on the US vinyl edition of Wanted Dread & Alive. The two love songs on the record, the duet "Nothing But Love" and the attempted single "Rock With Me," are extremely commercial, very disappointing and always elicit a "skip track" response from me. It is not that Peter Tosh cannot write or sing a good love song - check out the great pair he put on his first release, Legalize It - it's just that these songs are sub par and sound extremely out-dated. The production of the record is good, but many of the songs lack the punch that they would later achieve live in concert. Even Tosh's next, and admittedly poppier-sounding release, Mama Africa, is more consistent in its conception and delivery. If building a Tosh collection, I would highly recommend starting with Equals Rights. Equal Rights is Tosh's finest, most polished, most consistent, and ultimately most rewarding work, filled with well-crafted, excellently performed, highly political songs. Next, I would recommend Legalize It or Bush Doctor if looking for studio releases - both have great content, excellent musicians and strong performances (though the sound quality on Legalize It is still a bit historical - but that is part of the charm for me). Next, I would investigae live Tosh material, starting with the fantastic Live & Dangerous from Boston 1976 and then moving on to the Complete Captured Live from California in 1983. I would finally fill in any remaining holes in the collection with Mama Africa, Wanted, and Mystic Man (some of the Mystic Man tracks (e.g., the title cut, "Day The Dollar Die" & "Buk-In-Hamm Palace", like several of the Wanted tracks, are more essential than Mama Africa material, but again, it is an uneven release that perhaps tried too hard to find new commercial outlets). I'd turn to the No Nuclear War disc last.

5 out of 5 stars Peter Tosh's Best Work.......2005-09-17

"Wanted: Dread or Alive" is, by any standard, an absolute must for your Reggae music collection. Start with the best ever drum and bass combo, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, add the legendary guitar rhythms of Mikey Chung. Then, add the powerful voice and lyrical messages of Peter Tosh. You get a great traditional Reggae masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars Tosh's last great duet, "Nothing but Love.".......2005-09-08

I've left this album on repeat many a time. Every track is great. Tosh serves as a sentinel, warning us on two tracks to stay independant of friends who seem impartial but rat behind your back. The song that gave this album four stars is "Cold Blood." Tosh's vocals sound to countryish for reggae.

5 out of 5 stars a very good well arranged Tosh album .......2005-06-02

this is the only Peter Tosh album I have heard, but i like it a lot and plan to get it sometime. The production is excellent, the tracks are outstanding, and it is funky and beautiful music. If you like good reggea music you should get this outstanding cd. It will become a very enjoyable staple of your collection. this cd is Just as good as any Bob Marley music you have heard before.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless.......2005-02-25

"Wanted Dread & Alive," Peter Tosh's final album for the Rolling Stones' label, was released in 1981 in the aftermath of the death of Tosh's former bandmate, Bob Marley. With that event, mystique and intrigue surrounded Tosh's new album with its prevocative, enigmatic music. Equally enticing is the addition of several tracks not on the U.S. album, "Rok With Me," "Oh Bumbo Klaat," and "Guide Me From My Friends," as well as two previously unreleased alternate versions of "Rok With Me," and the duet with Gwen Guthrie "Nothing But Love".

The opening track, "Coming In Hot," is a purposely violent depiction of Tosh's personal bout with a heavy fever at the beginning of the year, although some thought this was a song in answer to Bob Marley's "Coming In From the Cold". The other track tied to Marley was the soothing, beautiful "Fools Die (For Want of Wisdom)," originally entitled "Wisdom," when it was made with Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley years before. The reason for the connection is that both Marley and Tosh had made covers of this old song, and the lyrics in Tosh's "Fools Die (For Want of Wisdom)," were seen as tied to Bob Marley's cover, "Stiff Necked Fools".

Here, Tosh does give slight exposure to a fun side with the danceable, fun song "Reggaemylitis," reffering to a disease only reggae can cure. Also here to show Tosh's fun side are the R&B-style songs "Nothing But Love," and "Rok With Me," the first being a smash-hit duet with Gwen Guthrie.

Of course, his classic millitancy, anger, and spirituallity do out-shine the other moods, with songs like the title track, "Wanted Dread and Alive," my personal favorite, the solemn, dark "Guide Me From My Friends," the addition to the previous song entitled "That's What They Will Do," and finally "Cold Blood," a song resembling Tosh's 1971 "Here Comes the Judge," although this recording was in reference his bogus 1978 ganja possession charge.

While each of the above songs do have strong elements of spirituality, this is the main theme for powerful, yet relaxing and meditative songs like "Rastafari Is," the aforementioned "Fools Die (For Want of Wisdom)," and the ambitious, truthful "Oh Bumbo Klaat," which was about Tosh's battle with demons that would plague him constantly. Usually seen as an obscenity, Tosh views the term "Bumbo Klaat," as a way to drive away evil spirits as he states in the song.

Finally, there are the two previously unreleased extended mixes of two tracks, both wonderful and original remixes.

This album contains some of Peter Tosh's finest work and is without a doubt, one of the most legendary works of art in his career. It is, indeed, a milestone for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding 5 star effort.......2007-02-06

Peter Tosh is in top form on this great sounding cd. Great songs, great rhythms. I know a lot of folks are going to just listen to some of his better known releases but believe me if you like reggae then you'll love Mama Africa.

One of the big surprises is his take on 'Stop This Train'. Instead of competing with untouchable Wailers' version Tosh goes for more of blues vibe and it works so well you forget all about other versions.

5 out of 5 stars Yes I .......2006-07-26

I've been listening to this album at least once a week since I was 13. I'm 36 now. 'Mama Africa' is an emotionally overwhelming song for any conscious Black person. 'Where You Gonna Run' insists on love, wisdom and over-standing as the only solution. 'Peace Treaty' is pure politics and last but not least is 'Not Gonna Give It Up' which I think is the most outstanding Nationalist song ever created. it is instructive and it guides the African mind on what his/her mission is. If you listen to how the chorus is orchestrated, you can hear that he is literally hypnotizing us. Psychology 101.

5 out of 5 stars Feel No Way.......2006-04-26

Not only has this album, originally released in 1983, got an incredible beat that you will give you the reggae sensation through your body, Tosh also gives us the most incredible quotable lyrics such as on 'Stop That Train':
"All my life, I've been a lonely man
Trying to teach people who don't understand.
And even though I try my best
I still can't find no happiness, no happiness"
The words of the truth seeker and philosopher.
The album begins with deep spiritual ode to a return to Africa with Mama Africa
There is the catchy message in Glass Houses: " If you living in a glass house, don't throw stones. And if you can't take stones, well then don' throw stones"
The famous reggae rocker Johnny B Goode, the cynical 'Peace Treaty' referring to Tosh's take on Jamaican politics at the time, and the funky Maga Dog. And the rhythmic musing on "Feel No Way' about coming close to 'pay day'.
If reggae is your type of music, then you simply have to have this album

5 out of 5 stars Buy all the remasters........2005-09-07

I am in a position similar to the reviewer "Dr. Groove," I have all the remastered albums. This one and Equal Rights are so alike in message that Tosh could have released it along with Equal Rights as a double album. Like Equal Rights, this one is a keeper. It has awesome solos in "Glasshouse," and "Not Gonna Give it Up." All the remasters are worth getting for the rare pictures of Peter, and interviews that were conducted specifically for the releases.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Tosh's chant to holy land.......2005-04-14

"Mama Africa", Tosh's first collaboration with the new band he formed at the end of 1981, following the departure of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Sahkespeare to concentrate on studio work specially with Black Uhuru. He started working on this album in 1982, and his three week visit to Nigeria the same year is vividly and hauntingly recalled on the "Mama Africa" LP. He once told: "Only Africa is home to me, not Jamaica, not USA, not those who don't want me. Only Africa have meaning... it is my inspiration, yes, man, everywhere I go it is in back of my thoughts."
During his time in the motherland, Tosh seeked the assistance of traditional healers to help him conquer the life-threatening wounds he had received from numerous brutal beatings by the police in Jamaica. The album includes two versions of the international hit "Johnny B. Goode", a reggae remake of Chuck Berry's mid 60s song.Give Thanks to Mother Afica for her divine inspiration.

For those you wanting a collection of Tosh's work without having to buy such noted favorites as, "Wanted Dread Or Alive", "Equal Rights", "Legalize it", "Bush Doctor, or "No Nuclear War" can feel confident in purchasing the Gold Collection. It contains every song on the "No Nuclear War" CD except for Fight Apartheid. It also includes, the title tracks from "Bush Doctor" and "Equal Rights". Two of the best songs on "Wanted Dread or Alive", Coming in Hot and Reggae-Mylitis, are found on this must have collection. I almost forgot that his two chart topping hits, Johnny B. Goode and Don't look back, round out this CD. If you own only one Tosh CD let it be "Legalize it" and then buy this CD to fill in the rest of your collection. Tosh was the Rude Boy that gave the Wailers their roots. He died much to soon but he left us all a musical legacy that transcends time and space. Our kid's kids will discover his music and rejoice in the magic and poetry that was Tosh.
