Customer Reviews:
WOW! Was "Mickey" a GREAT song, or what?!.......2004-10-26
Nope, in fact it was one of the songs that I hated the first time I heard it and can still gather up a load of revulsion for today. The oddball tune that drags this collection up to the .500 line is Pete Shelley's "Homo Sapien". Funny, catchy and just plain clever, but I worry about Pete. Other than that volume 5 barely trips the meter. Welcome to the middle of the new wave road.
Nearly Quintessential...Nearly.......2002-05-24
My biggest complaint about this particular album is the inclusion of "Hold onto Something" by Great Buildings. Many of these songs define my days in high school, but for the life of me I can't remember ever hearing of this band. However, I do remember hearing this song...or one very much like it -- Joe Jackson's incredibly popular song titled, "I'm the Man," from his album, "I'm the Man" (1979), which was hugely popular through the early eighties.
Re-mixing this album with the correct song would help this album's rating a lot.
Those Were The Days-- Great New Wave Collection!.......2001-08-18
The best entry in Rhino's awesome "New Wave Hits" series.(Volume 1 which covers the late 70's is also excellent). All 16 songs are culled from 1982 which was indeed a very good year for pop music. Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One" and Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" were anthems of the(then) young MTV Generation. These quirky video darlings raged like a hurricane of fresh air in the face of bland corporate schlock which hogged the airwaves. Songs like the Go Go's "Vacation" and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" were not only pure fun-- they were also well-crafted 3-minute pop gems. In fact, nearly every tune on volume 5 is cut from the same intelligent pop mold. Other standouts from this set include the vastly underrated Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday Someway", The Jam's "A Town Called Malice" and Soft Cell's absurdly humorous "Sex Dwarf". The only weak cuts are Gang of Four's "Man in Uniform" and the truly horrible "Art of Parties" by Japan. Overall, this is a fantastic collection which harkens back to a truly innovative time in pop music-- a brief time when catchy Hit Singles ruled and all possibilities seemed endless.
Best In The Series.......2001-07-07
This is my favorite of the series. Actually there are only two cuts that I consider weak ("Kids in America" and "Mickey"). ALl the rest are great little slices of the variety and creativeness of 80's new wave rock. Good c.d. to have.
Just Can't Get Enough vol. 5.......2000-07-10
I have 8 of the cd's in this series, and plan on getting the rest. This one is one of my favorite of the series. The song "Love Plus One" by Haircut One Hundred is a fabulous song. There are many other gems as well, such as "I Want Candy", "Someday, Someway" and "I Ran (So Far Away)". There are many obscure songs on here, so don't expect to know them all, unless you had an unbelievable vinyl collection in the 80's. The music hear can fit almost any mood you may be feeling. Pick it up and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
10 Songs Just Isn't Enough.......2005-06-10
OK, you remember the big hit - "867-5309/Jenny" - and you want it in your collection. Now you must choose. Do you get this budget priced compilation, with 10 songs, or do you spend almost twice as much money for "Tommy Tutone/Tommy Tutone 2", which will give you 22 songs?
The other reviewer of this collection chose to save a few bucks and go with the 10 songs, and obviously he's happy with his choice. But I'd like to take this opportunity to urge you to spend a little more and get the other CD instead. Otherwise you'll miss out on fine songs such as "Angel Say No", "Shadow On The Road Ahead", "Why Baby Why", and "Steal Away".
No matter which way you go, you're going to end up with songs only from Tommy Tutone's first 2 albums. Which is fine, their career was short, and album 3 was pretty weak anyway. (Two later CDs surfaced after a long break, with only one of the original band members participating.) If you get this collection, you'll get 5 songs from each of the two albums, if you get the other CD you'll get the 2 albums in their entirety.
If you're a fan of the power pop genre or of Tommy Tutone in particular, spend the extra money, it's well worth it. If you just want the hit, then get this one. If you're afraid that Tommy Tutone might not have had enough good songs to make it worth getting either one, fear not. They had plenty of good songs.
867-530 MINE.......2004-07-12
While searching for a copy of Tommy Tutone 2 on CD, I was forced to make a choice. I could pay more and get Tommy Tutone's first 2 albums on one CD or I could chose this CD that had everything I wanted off of TT2 and was cheaper. Truly a no brainer. A nice classic rock addition to my collection at a nice price.

Customer Reviews:
Why the concensus to diss National Emotion?.......2005-12-30
Despite the concensus opinion in most reviews to disparage Tommy Tutone's third album "National Emotion" I maintain that it was a stellar effort and should have been for Tommy Tutone what "Rumours" was for Fleetwood Mac. I am obviously the odd man out on this opinion, but happily so. Can we please have National Emotion go digital?!
A Real Class Act .......2005-06-16
Having been exposed to only "8675309-JENNIE" leaves you totally unprepared
for the scope and depth that this band summons forth in this compilation of their other songs. Tommy Heath and Jim Keller evoke a synthesis of sound that stirs the echos of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, the Beatles, T-Bone Burnett and Tom Waits among others. Why they did not chart more hits is no mystery as they had little help or promotion from their label. With songs like "Which Man Are You", "Why Baby Why","No Way to Cry", "Steal Away" and "Tonight", all of which have haunting lyrics and captivating melodies (like Orbison's Ballads)they should have stayed in the Top 40. Their lyrics are so good they must have been written with a silver pen using golden ink because once you start listening to the songs, its hard to stop. For anyone that believes no good music came from the 1980s, you need only hear Tutone 'Once' to realize that's not true. They had a rare talent and should have stayed together longer because their music is much, much better than the seemingly anonymous and androgynous "pretty boys" which seemed more concerned with their hair than with their music. Their guitars and vocals are faultless, and adding the meshing together of the drums and keyboards have you believing they had been together for many years. They don't need the on stage antics of other bands, and they did not need it as their music is so introspective and different that it is almost, "stand alone."
A genuine diamond that begs to be played over and over.
Plenty of Good Stuff Here.......2002-07-19
Tommy Tutone enjoyed a short heyday during the peak of New Wave in the early 1980s. The first two Tutone albums contained an array of power pop--music with hooks and an edge. There are at least five or six great tunes on this CD. Jenny (867-5309 is their best-known song and may also be their best. But songs like Baby It's Alight, Angel Say No, Cheap Date and Which Man are You, among others, are worth a serious listen. If you're into the music of the New Wave period, definitely check this CD out.
One Hit Wonders Had Many Other Fine Songs.......2002-02-13
Tommy Tutone made three albums in the early 80s, and had one smash hit single, "867-5309/Jenny", which was from the second album, "Tommy Tutone 2". This CD re-issue combines the first 2 albums on one CD. (The 3rd album, "National Emotion", has never been issued on CD, but is a disappointment compared to the first two.) Tommy Tutone's albums were comprised of energetic power pop in the style of the hit, plus slower, more somber songs that were equally catchy but had a quality of melancholy - "Shadow On The Road Ahead", "Which Man Are You". The first album is pretty good, a 3-star effort, but it is on the 5-star second album where they really shine. The two leaders, singer Tommy Health and guitarist Jim Keller, where known during the band's brief life for not getting along well together, and after album three they finally split up. More than a decade after their heyday, Heath resurrected the band name and put out two more albums as Tommy Tutone, without Keller's involvement. I haven't heard either one. If you know and love "867-5309/Jenny" and are curious about whether the rest is worth owning, my advice is go ahead and buy this CD, there are plenty of other good songs to be found here.
(April 2003 update: Now I HAVE heard the two later albums, and I like them both. 1994's "Nervous Love" seems more like a Tommy Heath solo album, but 1998's "Tutone.rtf" has got the old Tommy Tutone spirit, and holds it's own with the best of the albums from the 80s. I've submitted reviews of each to Amazon.
Unknown Gems.......1999-03-08
Tommy Tutone is often noted as being a one hit wonder band. This is simply because "867-5309/Jenny" was their only song to receive air play. It isn't even their best song. This CD is full of good songs primarily from the first 2 albums. I highly recomend this CD, just take a listen and you will agree. Given more airtime for all their material they could of had a string of hits during the 80's, there is little music in the same genre today that can match this stuff !!

Tutone Gold.......2007-03-18
Tutone.rtf shows the true genius behind Tommy Tutone, Tommy Heath, who was really the primary focus of the band. But if you are not a Tutone fan, you probably never heard of it. If anything its better than his prior recordings, and they were GOOD. Usually you get one or two songs per disc that are good with the rest being 'filler'. TuTone.rtf stands that notion on its head as every song is very good, and some,"Young Love", "Happy Birthday", "World Ain't Flat", Once You Start Walking" and "Everybody Else is Wrong" really stand out as exceptional. But, "World Ain't Flat" and "Everybody Else is Wrong", are GREAT, with the paranoid's lament from "8675309-JENNY" continuing with "Everybody Else is Wrong". It has a good old rock beat that pulls you into it and just won't let go. He achieves Orbison's ballad theme of lost love in a very different gritty hard rock format-and it works. Tommy Heath will never get the acclaim of Roy Orbison, because of Orbison's four octave high tenor voice. But I cannot help but think had he written these songs for a "NAME" artist they might have achieved some Top Ten possibilities. As a writer he is exceptional.
I hope Tommy Heath continues his music with a better Label, one with some support, because his eclectic style deserves to be HEARD.
TUTONE LIVES!
Tommy Heath Really Can Make A Tommy Tutone Album.......2003-04-26
After 3 albums in the early 80s, the band "Tommy Tutone" disbanded. In 1994 the lead vocalist, Tommy Heath, put out a CD ("Nervous Love") using the Tommy Tutone name, even though none of the other original band members participated. In 1998 Heath did it again with "Tutone.rtf". And you know what? This time out, he proves himself fully capable of continuing the TT name with an album that ranks right up there with the best stuff they ever produced. That was not the case with the 1994 album, which was not well-produced and which did not adhere to the old TT sound. That's not to say it was bad, in fact I liked it, but it didn't SOUND like a Tommy Tutone album. This one ("Tutone.rtf") does. In fact the production this time out is outstanding, superior in fact to any of the original TT albums. And rather than explore different genres such as country or folk ballads, as he had done on the prior album, this time out Heath sticks to the punchy power pop that TT was known for. Furthermore, some of the best songs have the same sort of dark undercurrents that made their best album, "Tommy Tutone 2" from 1981, so good. My favorite is "The Grifter's Prayer", about a desperate guy praying for one big lucky financial windfall. "Happy Birthday Anyway" is great, as is "The World Ain't Flat". In fact, there are no weak tracks at all. "Jenny's Calling", an apparent sequel to "867-5309/Jenny", seems to get the most attention, but it's probably my least favorite track on the album. As you may recall, in 1981 he was obsessed with Jenny after seeing her number written on a bathroom wall. But now he knows her and he realizes he'd have been better off if he never met her - that Jenny is nothing but trouble! It's kind of amusing but it also strikes me as a pretty shameless ploy to try to recapture past glories. Two of the songs from the previous album ("Our Special Place" and "Once You Start Walking") are re-recorded for this album. "Our Special Place" benefits greatly from the second effort, but on the other song I actually prefer the earlier version, even if it's not as well recorded. Anyway, overall this is a very strong album which will almost surely please the old fans. I hope Heath isn't finished yet, this album has left me hungry for more.
Tutone.rtf - the best yet!.......2002-05-28
I picked this up at a live show in St Paul Minnesota. Every track rings true to the Tommy Heath vocals from days gone by...great lyrics and songs. Pick it up if you can find it...

I am an old fan of "Tommy tutone". If you liked any of his older tunes this is a must buy CD. I feel that "Jenny's Calling" is one of the best tracks on the CD. When you hear the whole CD you will enjoy every track. This is A MUST BUY CD. I encourge you to buy this CD.
It feels like an old friend is back........1999-03-27
I have been waiting for Tommy Tutone for several years. The new CD is just fantastic. Tommy Heath's voice has never sounded better. Listening to him howl 'Jenny's got the blues...' sent chills through my body. My favorite track is 'Everybody Else is Wrong', but the whole CD is great. A must for Tommy Tutone fans.

Really A Tommy Heath Solo Album, But Pretty Good Anyway.......2003-04-25
Tommy Tutone was a power-pop band that made 3 albums in the early 80s before disbanding. Lead guitarist Jim Keller and lead vocalist Tommy Heath were the two principal songwriters and co-leaders. They had one huge hit single, "867-5309/Jenny". In 1994, a new "Tommy Tutone" album, "Nervous Love" appeared, 11 years after their last album. The only member of the original band that appears here is vocalist Heath. Furthermore, he makes little effort to even sound like his old band. So realistically, this is Tommy Heath's first solo album. The first two tracks ("A Long Time Ago" and "Once You Start Walking") are the most similar to the old TT sound, and are my favorites on the album. After this things start to stray far from the TT template. We get three country songs, two acoustic folk songs, and three rockers in a rockabilly/honkytonk vein. Some of this is quite good, especially the tender acoustic ballad "Marincy Arizona" and the country-ish "Another Slow Dance". One knock on the album: the production sounds pretty low budget. Heath followed this up in 1998 with another "Tommy Tutone" album, "Tutone.rtf", with another new line up of supporting players. Unlike "Nervous Love", "Tutone.rtf" really does sound like the old TT albums. Two of the songs from "Nervous Love" are repeated in newly-recorded versions on "Tutone.rtf", and you can really hear how much cleaner and punchier the recording is on the later album. In fact, I'd rate "tutone.rtf" as the second-best album from the Heath/TT history, behind only "Tommy Tutone 2" (which was the one with "867-5309/Jenny"). "Nervous Love" I'd rate as forth-best out of the 5 albums, ahead of only the third album, "National Emotion". But still, I like it.
