4 out of 5 stars A Classic!.......2007-07-02

This compilation cd is a great collection of Santana favorites. The instrumentals only feature lifts these recordings from a 60's/70's, etc. retrospective into a terrific adult contemporary classic.

3 out of 5 stars Santana The Best Instrumentals.......2007-03-19

This CD has a number of Santana's classic hits like Samba Pa Ti, Flor de Luna, and Soul Sacrifice that I really enjoyed, however, in my opinion those are the only really good songs and this is a mediocre album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Instrumentals.......2006-11-06

This is great collection. This is the flavor of Santana I enjoy most.

4 out of 5 stars From the inside!!.......2005-08-20

This is a very good compilation of only instrumentals by the master. My only regret is that "Every Step of the Way" from "Caravanserai" is missing. That is one of the most powerful Santana songs ever. Also, my favorite in this compilation is "Aquamarina".

5 out of 5 stars Just the music.......2005-01-09

There are many great guitarists in the world but only Carlos Santana can move me like he does. Long ago I made my own version of this album on cassette because I wanted all these great instumentals on one tape. Finally it has been done and been done right. Europa is easily the best instrumental number ever and I would argue one of the best songs of all time. It is perfectly married with all the other great Santana numbers that were usually the best thing on their respective albums.
Put this on, turn the lights down low and lose yourself in the music.

If you're looking for that perfect slow hand CD to carry around in the car, Time Pieces is the disc for you. Featuring 11 of Clapton's most radio-friendly hits ("I Shot the Sheriff," "After Midnight," and "Layla," of course), this CD also offers up some of Clapton's most romantic moments in "Wonderful Tonight" and his most cynical in "Promises." Though there's nothing here that you don't have on another couple of discs, Time Pieces is a convenient package of great hits that make you want to roll down the windows, crank up the stereo, and roll. --L.A. Smith

3 out of 5 stars Obselete, but far from bad.......2007-03-11

While the joke about Clapton (like coffee) sucking without Cream isn't true, he certainly made his best work in the '60's. Which is why I'd point any Clapton newbie to The Cream of Clapton, rather than Timepieces, since it contains not only all of his solo hits (which are a mixed bag, I'll admit, but there are some good ones), but also offers up a few Cream, Blind Faith and Dominoes tracks. This mainly focuses on solo Clapton, other than Layla (with Derek & the Dominoes - NOT the only good song the band recorded!) This can be good - after all, you get After Midnight, I Shot the Sheriff, Let It Grow, Cocaine and Lay Down Sally. But on the other end of the scale, Wonderful Tonight, Promises, and his take on Knockin' on Heaven's Door - not bad, just mediocre. And I'm sorry, but Wonderful Tonight and Promises are hellspawn - along with I've Got a Rock 'n' Roll Heart (sounds like he never frickin' PLAYED rock), they constitute my Axis of Clapton's Evil. The absence of Let It Rain SHOULD be an enormous red flag, since it's far and away the single best song of his solo career. Motherless Children is also missed, and as I said before, a few '60's tunes would've been appreciated.
This is completely worthless now that The Cream of Clapton exists, but if that's considered contraband where you live (but this one isn't - hey, stranger things have happened), Timepieces makes for a good alternative.

3 out of 5 stars Not Very Good.......2005-12-06

I was highly disappointed with this Clapton Compilation. The only songs I particularly like were "Layla", "Cocaine", and "I Shot The Sheriff".
I am sorry, people; "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" is a terrible song. The best of Clapton? Generally the "best" of someone means their "best" songs! Also cut out "Willie and the Hand Jive", "Wonderful Tonight", and a few others.
If it weren't for the 3 songs I mentioned previously, this album would be trash.

2 out of 5 stars A Lacking Album.......2005-12-06

This album lacks a lot. I don't really want to go into detail, but trust me. Get the cream of clapton istead.

2 out of 5 stars TIME FECES.......2005-10-27

The BEST of Clapton?...PUH-LEEEEEEEEZE!!! This retch-rospective should be called "Time Feces". Where's "Let It Rain", one of his finest singles ever? What happened to "Bell Bottom Blues", "Tulsa Time" (I'm sure Don Williams put it on HIS greartest hits), "I Can't Stand It", "Blues Power", "Hello Old Friend", etc., etc., etc.??? Am I being picky here, or do any and all of these chestnuts not take precedence over pedestrian covers of "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and (for cryin' out loud) "Swing Low Sweet Chariot"? To think that the compilers were choosing from one of Slowhand's best periods musically, long before he slid into soundtrack composing unconciousness. A far better compilation choice is the smartly titled "Cream of Clapton", which not only includes everything "Time Pieces" left off, but also everything decent it left on, including the original "Layla" and "After Midnight", his country classics "Lay Down Sally" and "Promises", and his "461 Ocean Boulevard" hit remakes "I Shot the Sheriff" and "Willie and the Hand Jive". It also throws in five Cream classics and one from Blind Faith. Now THAT'S the Cream of Clapton! This tastes more like curdled milk. RATING: TWO BAD

4 out of 5 stars Still good, even if there are better discs out there.......2005-09-15

I bought this disc used for a great price and it is more than worth it. It gives me a Clapton fix when I need it and delivers a great group of his songs/hits. If I want more, I know there are other albums with Clapton that will fill the void that this album leaves but I have no problem with this one. If you are a Clapton disciple, you might buy this one but you'll surely own much more, too. If you just need a jolt of Clapton, grab this one.

5 out of 5 stars "The Very Best..." is right!.......2006-09-05

These are all my favorite Bill Joel songs. I never tire of hearing them and having them compiled on one CD is fantastic! Fans will not be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Scandinavian Skies?.......2006-03-31

Looking over the track listing, we have all the Joel classics here... "Piano Man"... "Just The Way You Are"... "We Didn't Start The Fire"... "She's Got A Way" and of course, "Scandinavian Skies". Huh? Don't remember that one? Dig out your copy of Nylon Curtain. If you're putting together the Joel staples on one CD, I highly doubt that sits on top of the pile of essential songs. But aside from the obvious choices that could go in place of "Scandinavian Skies", it has a nice selection of songs for the casual listener. But of course, the casual listener would be better off dropping the extra money for the Greatest Hits 1-3 Box. Overall, 4 stars on the weight of the songs included, not on the ones they didn't.

3 out of 5 stars Piano Man From The Standards.......2005-07-22

There are just so many people that sometimes have to know a artist through the sounds of Broadway. Why? Because there is no other way you could find the songs he or she has made but there. For one of the greatest artists of the U.S., Billy Joel, he has truly shown that truthful with the status of Movin' Out. Although it is sad he hasn't recorded a new tune in almost a decade. His songs still remain true from the heart after all this time. Sadly, when it comes to hits packages, they almost hit the nail the nail on the head completely, especially for Billy Joel.

Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel is a single disc collection consisting of 19 tracks that the piano man has truly made a spectacle of. The songs here have really been remastered very well and still show his music simply is still alive. There are so many great songs here that are highlighted here including Piano Man, River Of Dreams, the hard driven We Didn't Start The Fire, all the way to Soul-driven tracks like Tell Her About It, The Grammy-Winning Just The Way You Are, Uptown Girl, and Movin' Out (Anthony's Song).

Yet, with the good sides about this collection, there are a lot of disadvantages from this collection. One of them, is that the collection is a little bit expensive, where you could get most of these tracks from another Billy Joel collection like 2001's Essential Billy Joel. Another disadvantage is that the album also does overshadow so many good songs as well like, The Longest Time, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, A Matter of Trust, and the upbeat Big Shot from 52nd Street.

Nevertheless, Billy Joel has truly made so many great songs for all to enjoy. It is just sad that with a generation that is more into acts like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, doesn't know how brilliant Billy Joel has made pop music. Still, Piano Man: The Very Best Of Billy Joel isn't a bad collection especially for anybody who doesn't have any of his records, but die hard longtime fans might want to avoid this collection. It doesn't really go to extremes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING REMASTERED ELO COLLECTION..................2006-11-25

This cd collection of Elo greatest hits is not in chronological order, but it really does'nt matter. There are some edited versions of songs but I really believe Jeff Lynn put alot of care into this remastered gem. These two cds sounds so awesome that the edits really don't take alot out of this collection. Jeff Lynn believed each Elo song should be treated like a single, each single given the time and effort and care to make each single song stand out in it's own way, weather you love or hate the song, Jeff Lynn had that philosophy. This Elo collection defines that Jeff Lynn philosophy. I listen to this collection and I am just amazed at the skill and craftmanship of Jeff Lynn and Elo. Jeff truly is one of Englands greatest single hit makers. This collection is better than the Elo box sets that have been released in the last 16 or so years. the sound quality of these cds is incredibly pristine. This music may sound like gooey 1970s bubblegum music to some, but to me it is amazingly creative structured music that is catchy with rythm and spiritual form. I have to admit when I hear some of these Elo songs I have to crack a smile. Jeff Lynn and the rest of Elo put alot of pride into each song they ever created, this collection shows that. A true must have for Elo fans and music fans in general. The remastering on this cd set is incredible. Note: Jeff Lynn in 1994-1995 engineered for the three remaining Beatles at the time with "Free as a bird" and "True Love", this shows you the respect even the remaining Beatles had for Jeffs amazing talent.............

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST ELO GREATEST HITS COLLECTION.......2006-05-26

This collection is well worth it. I Highly recommend "LIGHT YEARS" to any fan of the Electric Light Orchestra. The amount of songs compaired to other compilations is hard to beat.

4 out of 5 stars Catchy pop with classical touches.......2004-10-29

Electric Light Orchestra was one of the UK's most consistent and successful bands of the 1970s. They had a long string of hits throughout that decade and the first part of the next one. Their sound was characterised by plush harmonies, loads of strings and catchy tunes. These 38 tracks include the overwhelming majority of their hits from the 1970s and the early 1980s plus some great album tracks. My favourites include Livin' Thing with its captivating fiddle, the addictive Sweet Talkin' Woman, the rousing Turn To Stone and others like Wild West Hero Don't Bring Me Down, Mr Blue Sky and 10538 Overture. It may sound like lightweight pop, but it is a skilfully honed, intelligent and cleverly produced style with classical flourishes that always remained accessible. If you like catchy pop with a touch of the orchestral, this album's for you.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Album, but...............2004-01-08

Again this is one of ELO's best, with ALOT of their best songs on it, but if you paid the " outragious " price here that Amazon is charging you, then you've been royally ripped off.....sorry.FYE's is selling this same album for $24.00 and change. It is a good album though.

4 out of 5 stars Entrancing stuff.......2001-08-12

My,my,what a diverse taste in music I have.Part of it extends to this heavily enjoyable assortion of superb musical numbers.Particular favourites include the funky, fusion noted number Evil Woman, the jolty, unforgettable Mr.Blue Sky,the brilliant Last Train to London and the heavy bass number Confusion.Born, bred and based in Birmingham myself,it makes me proud such musical talent could emerge from my home city.Definitely one of the best bands of the '70's,and significantly make us remember the decade.I thoroughly recommend this product.

4 out of 5 stars Wrongs righted.......2007-05-27

There have been compilations before of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, the band he formed after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, but this latest one puts right most of the wrongs and omissions of those.
Everything you expect is here including Oh Well Parts 1 & 2 in its full 9 minute glory and without fading out in the middle, where you had to turn over the single, as previous collected versions had; and the previously unreleased US Version of Need Your Love So Bad, which is a superb extended six minute piece, with strings arranged by Mickey Baker (who played guitar on Little Willie John's original). Stop Messin' Round was on the flipside of Need Your Love So Bad, but it is here in the slighter shorter version used on the album Mr. Wonderful.
The towering magnificence of The Green Manalishi is also re-established by its inclusion. The compilation ends with a token track by Chicken Shack, because of Christine McVie's involvement with the band, and the then-recent hit remix of Albatross by Chris Coco, both of which I could have done without in this particular context, perhaps replaced by their first single, Rambling Pony/I Believe My Time Ain't Long.

U2's second decade often seemed as preoccupied with the band's burgeoning superstardom--and how to confront/confound it--as it did with creating music. The band managed only four albums during the era (only of half its '80s output), projects whose gestations seemed perennially plagued by turmoil as much as mercurial creative instincts. But as this rewarding, 30-track double-disc anthology (and bonus DVD) chronicles, U2 ultimately managed a considerable feat: producing a memorable, lasting body of work in a decade when one of pop music's chief attributes was its disposability. Disc one mixes hits like "Mysterious Ways" and "One" with seductive soundtrack cuts (the title track to Wim Wenders's Until the End of the World, Batman Forever's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"), new mixes of "Discotheque," "Staring at the Sun," and "Numb," and a pair of strong new tracks, the Orbit mix of "Electrical Storm" and "The Hands that Built America," the title track from Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York. The second disc compiles the band's more experimental B-sides from the epoch (many of them remixes), and offers up a concise encapsulation of the band's fascination with--and shrewd incorporation of--electronica and club music. The bonus DVD contains a generous collection of videos of songs from disc one, along with alternate versions, director commentaries, additional bonus tracks such as "If God Will Send His Angels" and "Lemon," as well as a mini-documentary of the band's historic 1997 Bosnian concert, The Road to Sarajevo. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars The Best of 1990-2002?.......2005-11-21

In 1991, U2 returned to the music industry with the phenomenal album Achtung Baby. While this release brought them back to their original status as amazing musicians, U2 would soon enter its low point with the releases of their hugely disappointing albums Zooropa and Pop. Fortunately, after the failure of these two strange albums they came back to their senses and recorded the more "normal" album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Before I criticize them, I would first like to say that I am very proud of U2 for still managing to create a memorable cd with only four albums, only half of which were successful.

Now on to the criticism. First, the thing that angers me most about this cd is, like with The Best of 1980-1990's release of "The Sweetest Thing," they cheated with the songs. "Electrical Storm" and "The Hands That Built America" were both released in 2002, which means that they shouldn't be here. It's not that the songs are bad it's just that I wish they had saved them for a possible Best of 2000-2010. Next, while the song selection here is far superior to the Best of 1980-1990, there are still several flaws, which I will address later. Also, many of the remixed songs on the A-side should have appeared in their original versions. Last, to put it lightly, the B-sides SUCK!!!!!! Here's what they should have done to make this "deluxe edition" a little more desirable. For the singles, they should have made more room by transferring "Electrical Storm," "Miss Sarajevo," "The Hands That Built America," and "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" to the B-sides. Since all of these songs were released on either movie soundtracks or their own singles and not one of the four albums, I don't believe they should belong on the A-side. This not only would massively improve the B-sides, but also allow them to put in four missing songs. The songs I would insert would be "Walk On," "Please," "If God Will Send His Angels," and "Lemon," since many U2 fans unfortunately like this song. Also, the A-side lasts for about 72 minutes, so they could have added one more, which I would have choosen to be "Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses." Next, "Gone," "Discotheque," and "Staring at the Sun" should have appeared in their original versions; however, the remix of "Numb" is more than welcomed here. That takes care of the A-side and now for the B-side. As I mentioned above, move the four "non-album" songs over here and add the songs "Always," "The Ground Beneath Her Feet," "Paint it Black," "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad," one of the remixes of "The Fly," and "Where Did it All Go Wrong" to the cd. Next, in order to fit all these on here some of the remixes need to go. I would suggest removing the remixes of "Dirty Day," "Numb," "If God Will Send His Angels," "Lemon," and "Discotheque." It also wouldn't kill them to remove the studio version of "Electrical Storm" since the William Orbit Mix is much better and still captures the essence of the song. The remixes of "Even Better Than the Real Thing" and "Mysterious Ways" are actually quite good and deserve to stay on here along with "Happiness is a Warm Gun," "Salome," and "Lady With the Spinning Head."

Like with their previous Best of cd, U2 created an album for "unexperienced" fans only. The big differences between the two Best of cds are the first decade had much better music and the B-sides from the first decade are actually worth the extra mula. I would recommend this cd only to people who just want the basic essientials of U2's later years. However, if anyone wants to truly experience The Best of 1990-2000, I recommend just buying the four albums, or at least Achtung Baby.

Here's how I'd list the tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Did you come here to play Jesus with the voices in your head?.......2005-10-13

What a mixed bag this is! U2's journey through the 90's was a twisting, turning ride that saw the band careening from one style to the next, trying to force themselves away from inertia and only being intermittently successful. While "Achtung Baby" is widely heralded as a masterpiece and "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was universally acclaimed for the band reclaiming their strongest attributes, I doubt many regard either "Zooropa" or "Pop" as monuments to the band's greatness.

Which makes this best of set a true case for song. Fortunately for us, U2's songwriting was very rarely anything less than great, even if the costuming was oddball. So while the band was off exploring their musical wild hairs, they were still writing incredible material like "If God Will Send His Angels" or one-off knock-out's like "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" from "Batman Returns." The wild hairs aren't completely gone, though. It means they had to tweak "Numb" and "Discotheque" unnecessarily.

And it also means omissions abound. Conspicuous in their absence are "The Fly," "Elevation," "Walk On," and "Lemon." You do get a couple of bonuses, in particular the contribution to Martin Scorcese's "Gangs Of New York" Oscar nominated "The Hands That Built America." This collection is also worth having for what could possibly be one of the greatest songs of the 20'th Century, "One." That song alone makes this a four star rating and saves the set from dropping to a three via all the missing material.

As for the bonus "B-Sides" disc: frankly, not much here is really "bonus." "Lemon" and "If God Will Send His Angels" make their appearance here, but remixed (ugh). "Electrical Storm," one of the new songs, shows up again in a different version. And the free DVD is a waste; essentially a commercial for an upcoming DVD release. You're likely just as well served by the single disc version.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, the remixes hurt and the 1st could be enough.......2005-08-07

the album is pretty good, even though the remixing of some well known songs in my opinion doesn't improve anything unless you ar a dj or want to play the music in a club. Also, the first cd is good though the second is more like remixes and soundtrack material and is weaker than the firs cd. Unless you are a deep U2 fan and are willing to get some ok(not the best) content, I would rather go for the 1CD version of the album, but don't get me wrong, there are good songs in the album. Good buys!

5 out of 5 stars One of "U2's" best albums !!!!.......2005-01-16

I love U2. It is on my top 5 list of the best bands EVER. But I only own one U2 album. This one. My brother Pablo gave me this one, as well as many others. I am very thankfull. This one is perfect, one of the best albums I have and it even includes some new songs and mixes which makes this album even more perfect. I love this one with all my heart. Buy this one immediatley. Why? If you've been lookin' for that answer then check this review:

Disc One: The Best Of 1990-2000.- O.K. This whole album has 2 discs and 1 DVD. I mean, this is possibly the most complete and best U2 album with their greatest hits.

1.- "Even Better Than The Real Thing".- O.K. Great start for such an album. One of my favorite U2 songs there is.- 5/5.

2.- "Mysterious Ways".- I love this one too. Very...U2. For me..a classic.- 5/5.

3.- "Beautiful Day".- One of the best songs EVER.- 5/5.

4.- "Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)".- This is an example of a new song they out on this album and I think this one is better than the original version (which is in the other disc on this 2-disc set. Another one of my all-time favorite's.- 5/5.

5.- "One".- Another classic song from this great, great band. Another one of my all time favorite's,- 5/5.

6.- "Miss Saravejo".- Not too crazy about this one. Nothin' compared to "Beautiful Day" or "One".- 3/5.

7.- "Stay (faraway, so close)".- Yet another classic for me.- 5/5.

8.- "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of".- WOW. Another one of my all-time favorite's. This album is really something! .-5/5.

9.- "Gone (New Mix)".- I like this version more than the original. I like this one as much as "Even Better Than The Real Thing".- 5/5.

10- "Until The End Of The World".- Very grissly intro to this song. Then...it becomes one of my favorite's.

11.- "The Hands That Built America (Theme From "Gangs Of New York")".- Another new song. Probably some of you watched the movie "Gangs Of New York" with Leo DiCaprio and Daniel Day Lewis, I did and if you didn't, then I recomend you don't, the truth is I didn't like it, I like the song much more. But a mind-blowing performance by Daniel Day Lewis. Anyway, this one is another one of my all-time favorite's.- 5/5.

12.- "Discothèque (new mix)".- I like the original version, but I find almost no difference.- 5/5.

13.- "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me".- The banda sonora from "Batman Returns", the best Batman there is, anyway, I think it is one of my favorite's.- 5/5.

14.- "Staring At The Sun (new mix)".- I like the original version better. This version is too "whiny".- 4/5.

15.- "Numb (new mix)".- I think this song is the strangest I've ever heard. This one is the new mix.- 3/5.

16.- "The First Time".- Great. I like this one.- 4/5.

Disc Two: The "B" sides.- O.K. The second disc of this album. Most of the songs on this disc are mixes and this part of the album goes down:

1.- "Lady With The Spinning Head (Extended Dance Mix)".- I never heard the original version of this song, but I kinda like this version pretty much.- 4/5.

2.- "Dirty Day (Junk Day Mix)".- I never heard the original version of this song either, but I didn't like it, sorry.- 1/5.

3.- "Summer Day".- I love this song. Kinda reminded me of their other song "Desire", have you listened to it? If no, then listen to it now.- 5/5.

4.- "Electrical Storm".- Another new song. To be honest, I don't like this version too much, as I stated that above on disc one.- 4/5.

5.- "North And South Of The River".- Another strange song from U2.- 3/5.

6.- "Your Blue Room".- O.K. I like this one. Very much.- 5/5.

7.- "Happines Is A Warm Gun (The Gun Remix)".- O.K. I don't like this one that much either.- 3/5.

8.- "Salomé (Zooromancer remix)".- This One is more of a disco song.- 4/5.

9.- "Even Better Than The Real Thing (The Perfecto Mix)".- I like the original version better. "Perfecto" is spanish for "perfect", I should know that since I'm Bolivian. But you must have noticed that by taking out the remaining "o".- 4/5.

10.- "Numb (Gimme More Dignity Mix)".- I think this version of "Numb" is way better than the original version.- 5/5.

11.- "Mystrious Ways (Solar Plexus Club Mix)".- I like the original version better.- 4/5.

12.- "If God Would Send His Angels (Big Yam Mix)".- I never heard the original verion of this song, but this one is just fatal!! .- 0/5.

13.- "Lemon (Jeep Mix)".- O.K. This one is way way way better than the previous one.- 4/5.

14.- "Discothèque (Hexidecimal Mix)".- I hate this version of the song.- 2/5.

O.K. I think this is the best "greatest hits" U2 album. It starts off really smooth, but then, it goes dooowwwwwn big time. But either way I recomend this for you.

U2 RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars U2 BABY!!! VERTIGO ROCKS, READY FOR MORE!! Drop the 'BOMB'.......2004-09-28

Hey everyone...bought this the day it came out, but after FINALLY being able to listen to 'Vertigo' I had to write something up! VERTIGO ROCKS!!! Anyone else agree? Is there ANY band out there even remotely close to these guys? KEEP IT UP!!

Also, while I'm here...SORELY missing is: Elevation, Ground Beneath Her Feet, Walk On, plus a few others. But then, one would assume that the diehard U2 fan already has these from other sources. GREAT album, and thanks once again U2 (the band) for making so many great memories...can't wait for the 'Bomb' to drop in November!!

(which is painfully obvious to any REAL Dan Fan), March 7, 2006
Reviewer: B. Essex "Sings2Teddy"
FM is not a Steely Dan song - it is a Walter Fagen song.

You are joking right?! REAL Dan fan?? First of all it's Donald Fagen & Walter Becker. FM is a Steely Dan song - see below

FM
Drums and Percussion: Jeff Porcaro
Bass: Walter Becker
Guitar: Walter Becker
Steel Guitar: Cosmo Creek
Piano: Donald Fagen
Tenor Sax: Pete Christlieb
Percussion: Victor Feldman
Backup Vocals: Tim Schmit

5 out of 5 stars This "Best of" is very similar to "A Decade Of Steely Dan".......2005-01-03

First let me say that as a Steely Dan fan, this is a great album but, if you're after a greatest hits my recommendation is to buy ASIN: B000002P4R "A Decade Of Steely Dan".

There are three reasons for this. Firstly, the track listing beteeen the two is almost identical. "Then & Now" has a couple more songs but all the main hits are on the "Decade" album.

Secondly the "Decade" album is not an import so it is less than half price and thirdly, "FM" which is my favourite Steely Dan song has a Sax solo in this CD but on the "Decade" album the version, while otherwise identical has a guitar solo. Now I love a good sax solo as much as the next person but I don't think the sax solo does the song justice. It just doesn't have the feel that the guitar solo does. Someone told me once that Larry Carlton played the solo in FM. I don't know if this is true but it certaily sounds like his style. I know it's a personal thing but, I'd buy the "decade" album just for the FM guitar solo (ok and the cheaper price!).

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, weird sequence..........2002-11-05

Unlike most "Best Of" collections, which tend to highlight a few great songs "padded out" with a bunch of filler tracks, this Steely Dan compilation covering their "golden years" (that is, basically the whole decade of the 1970's) is truly loaded with great material from start to finish. But hey, when the group in question is Steely Dan, whose level of songwriting and musicianship was above and beyond virtually all of the "stadium rock", "smooth pop", and disco with which it shared the radio airwaves of that era, the problem is not which mediocre material to include, but rather, which excellent songs have to be omitted due to the time limitations of one CD. I think the compiler(s) did a very good job for the most part, although personally I think I would have replaced "Black Friday" with "Black Cow". If there were "1/2 stars" available, I would have given this disc 4-and-1/2 stars. The only reason I'd withhold a half star is that some of the sequences are a bit weird, none moreso than at the very beginning: We get off to an energetic start with "Reelin' in the Years", but since it's followed by "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", a fine song which was unfortunately saddled with an all-but-useless Intro of some sort of mumbling "log drums" or marimba that runs 23 seconds, we get a half minute (a long time in pop music terms) of what amounts to "dead air". If you listen while driving in your car, where this Intro barely cuts through at all, you might think there's something wrong with the disc, or your CD player. I suppose that this complaint should really be directed at the band and producer of the original track, but as Steely Dan is usually thought of as a "groove" group producing slick, toe-tapping, jazz-&-funk-inflected rock, the slowpoke Intro should have been cut out, at least for this collection; it kinda kills the pace so early in the album. There are a couple other odd sequences as well---it shows how important this aspect of producing a record can be, something that affects the listener's whole perception of it. That said, it really is a superlative batch of music, and anyway, in today's hi-tech world, you can play with the sequence as you wish, or "randomize" the tracks, which can be cool with this type of collection; just don't try to do that while driving your car---the cover photo shows what happened to those who did.

5 out of 5 stars Best "Best Of" Compilation I've Yet Seen.......1998-12-06

I bought this CD originally in Hong Kong, and it got stolen back here in the states. This is by far the best compilation of Steely Dan, and has a great history of the group in its liner notes. Thank you, Amazon, for carrying this and making it easy to replace! If anybody has a Steely Dan fan on their Christmas list, by the way, this is the one to get them.

5 out of 5 stars Glad to be german.......1998-11-23

This is a great compilation of all important Steely Dan songs and I'm glad to live in Germany because I had to pay only 13 DEM (= appr. 7.5 USD)which is a joke. It's a sad thing that this record is only available as an import in USA and therefore so expensive over there.

4 out of 5 stars Great compillation of a great artist.......2007-01-31

Cat Stevens is not a very popular man in the west right now - especially after his conversion to Islam and his lamentable involvement in the Rushdie affair. But he was a superb composer of delicate pop songs in the 60s and 70s. This compillation includes some of the best of them - Wild World, The First Cut is the Deepest (later a memorable cover by Rod Stewart), the wonderful Rubylove, Moonshadow, Father and Son, Hard Headed Woman, Peace Train. Highly Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very different from American version!.......2005-03-15

I have the American domestic version of The Very Best of Cat Stevens (which I lost this weekend, along with three other Cat CDs, and will need to replace). I just compared this playlist to that on the case of my American version, to see if the "4 Bonus Tracks" were worth the higher price.

I was surprised to discover that this is nothing like the American "The Very Best of Cat Stevens"! An important aspect of the American "The Very Best of Cat Stevens" is that the songs are in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, and that it includes the previously unreleased "...Seeing My Grandson Grow Old".

This Import CD's playlist is almost identical to another Import "Remember Cat Stevens: Ultimate Collection", except for two songs. (This substitutes "Sad Lisa" and "How Can I Tell You," both beautiful songs.) Compared to the domestic version (for half the price), this has 8 additional songs but omits 4 songs.

This IS a very good collection. It includes two of the Harold & Maude songs. But you can get all the Harold & Maude songs on my favorite Cat CD, Footsteps in the Dark, currently a real bargain at $9.98.

4 out of 5 stars MMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWW...! .......2005-02-26

This is a first class compiliation of Cat Stevens' greatest hits. If you are a baby boomer, then you will greatly appreciate this album which primarily features music from the late sixties and the seventies. Some of the music will put you on the nostalgia train and some of it is timeless, but all of it is excellent.

Cat Stevens is undoubtedly a prolific songwriter and when he sings his music, you get gold. This anthology of his music is about as good as it gets. From "Lady D'arbanville" to "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Oh Very Young", and, of course, "Morning Has Broken", the listener can't go wrong. Cat Stevens' talent is such that not only can he write great music, but he can sing, as well. His voice is at times folksy, at other times rich and vibrant, with a catch in it that can break your heart. When Cat Stevens converted to Islam and left the entertainment world, Islam's gain was truly the music world's loss.

It is the domestic version of this CD, however, released under the same name, which is the better value price wise, and the one worth having in one's personal music collection, notwithstanding the fact that this import does have an extra four tracks. At nearly double the price of the domestic version, this import is not worth that extra money, especially as the domestic version has all the tracks worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to Cat's pop music.......2005-02-24

Born Steven Georgiou, he adopted the name Cat Stevens for his musical career but subsequently became a Muslim, quitting his musical career and changing his name again, this time to Yusuf Islam. This compilation of his music as Cat Stevens is as good as any you are likely to find.

Cat had a minor UK hit in 1966 (I love my dog) but established himself as a songwriter by providing the Tremeloes with their first hit since Brian Poole left them (Here comes my baby) and by providing P P Arnold with her first hit (First cut is the deepest). Those hits were both in 1967, the year in which Cat had his first major hit as a singer, when Matthew and son peaked at number two in the UK. It was the biggest hit he ever had. He had another top ten UK hit (I'm gonna get me a gun) and two minor hits (A bad night, Kitty) in 1967 but none of those hits are included here. Actually, despite their hit status, they aren't really important.

Cat left his original label (Deram) and signed to Island, after which he recorded a series of albums that won him international acclaim. Although he placed six singles on the UK charts, all included here, his reputation ultimately rests with his albums. This explains why so many of his fans do not like compilations of his music, preferring the original albums.

Nevertheless, there is a market for compilations and there are plenty of people who don't want (or can't afford) to collect Cat's original albums. So here you get those hits (Lady D'Arbanville, Moon shadow, Morning has broken, Can't keep it in, Another Saturday night, Remember the days of the old school yard) as well as other classic tracks such as Peace train, Father and son, Wild world and Cat's own versions of Here comes my baby and First cut is the deepest.

If you want just one Cat Stevens collection, make it this one - but if you decide to collect his original albums instead, start with Tea for the tillerman or Teaser and the firecat.

5 out of 5 stars Fingerprints The Best of Powderfinger 1994-2000.......2006-05-30

I'm a big Powderfinger fan so when this album came out I could wait to get it. It was released on the 30 November 2004 and they put out a new song for the best of called Bless My Soul. Still this release is still lastest Powderfinger cd. In 2005 Bernard Fanning went solo with Tea and Sympathy, Darren Middleton's band Drag released their debut album This Way Out. And Ian Haug and John Collins formed a new band....not really because that band is Ian Haug, John Collins and the oringal drummer of Powderfinger Steve Bishop. But instend of calling it something like Old Powderfinger they called it The Predators.

Problaby most of you have never of Powderfinger so this is what they play.

Bernard Fanning - Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica & Keys
Darren Middleton - Guitar & Backing Vocals
Ian Haug - Guitar & Backing Vocals
John Collins - Bass
Jon Coghill - Drums

Parables For Wooden Ears (1994) Songs put on best of: Sink Low (9/10)
Double Allergic (1996) (The best Powderfinger album so far) Songs: Pick You Up (10/10), DAF (10/10) and Living Type (10,000/10).
Internationalist (1998) Songs: The Day You Come (9/10), Don't Wanna Be Left Out (10/10), Already Gone (7/10), Passenger (10,0000/10) and Belter (9.5/10).
Odyssey Number Five (2000) Songs: My Happiness (6/10), My Kinda Scene (10/10), Like a Dog (10,0000/10), Thrilliogy (10,00000/10), Waiting for the Sun (9.5/10).
Passenger EP (1999) Songs: These Days (10/10)

The New Songs

Bless My Soul (2004) - This is a great song. It was first played live on Triple J's Live At The Wireless Oz Music Month at the end of November. When they play this song live they have a intro song which hasn't got a name yet (10/10)

Process This (2002) - This isn't really a new song it just was unreleased until this album. It was played at their 2002 concerts. This song isn't as good as Bless My Soul (8/10)

5 out of 5 stars one excellent cd.......2006-02-25

Short review...this cd is a must have....I love it..the first 9 songs are complete hits..and the rest are still good...but I am so pleased with the cd, I recomend it to anyone who loves good, melodic rock. It weird but I can hear the Australian influence in there music.. goes great with some finn brothers and a side of croweded house.

5 out of 5 stars it just gets better.......2005-11-30

This is the ultimate road trip CD, the more you listen to it the better it gets. The first time we listened to it we weren't sure we liked some of the songs. But they grew on us and now this CD is always kept in the car.

4 out of 5 stars Australia's Answer to Coldplay.......2005-10-23

This is my first and definitely not last Powderfinger album. This band hails from Australia with a mixture of alt rock and a taste of a unique Australian flavour that we aussies can only come up with. 'The Best of Powderfinger' features the best singles from the 1994-2000 period of their music career as well as two previously unreleased singles. Many of the songs on this album were familiar to me from Australian shows and TV Ads as well as radio listening songs. Powderfinger has also since 2000 reached out to the world and are pretty much a well-known regular name in the alt rock carousels of America and Brittain. The well known songs 'My Happiness' with hauntingly delightful piano interlude as well as 'Waiting For The Sun' are my favourites but straight behind it are the songs 'My Kind of Scene' and 'Already Gone'.

The two new songs are B-grades but still enjoyable 'These Days' & 'Process This'. I enjoyed this album and I have become a fan of Powderfinger and look forward to get the rest of their albums shortly. This is the Australian answer to the English 'Coldplay'.

5 out of 5 stars Give 'Em The Finger.......2005-01-24

'Fingerprints' is the first album to attepmt to compile all of Powderfinger's singles onto one disc. It is, without a doubt, a fantastic compilation. However, its only downside is the fact that the compilation only dates back to 2000. This means that the songs from the 'Finger's most recent album (and arguably the best), 'Vulture Street', are left of it.

Yet there is something here for everyone, from Internationalist's roaring 'Don't Wanna Be Left Out', to the sombre tones of 'These Days'. The stand-out tracks are Odyssey's huge hit 'My Happiness' and the new single 'Bless My Soul'.

It could've been beyond brilliant if some of the better non-singles were included, but hey, you can only wish for so much. Fingerprints is a great introductory album to the work of Powderfinger.
