This CD just keeps on getting better.......2007-06-27

It's often pleasing to pick up a new album by your favorite group and rock out to what feels like a continuation of your favorite tunes by them. But then doesn't it always feel like a short time later the new album is played out? And it ensues naturally that you'd like the group to come out with another new album so that you have new stuff to listen to? Well, this isn't the case with Jarabe de Palo's new disc "Adelantando". It's different enough from each of his previous 4 main albums that it doesn't resemble the same sound. He branches out with new structures in the songs, new formats, some different instruments, new voices, and even a song in Italian. The themes are just as deep but unique to those previously appearing in his work. I didn't love the cd at first and was kind of disappointed. But then a few more listens and I was hooked on several songs. I had the same reaction to Dave Matthews' "Don't Drink the Water" and later was thrilled with it. I just hope as many people love this new creation from Jarabe and he starts to receive the international notoriety that he deserves.

Not your typical Spanish music.......2004-08-03

When I asked most Spaniards what they listened to, they would begin to rant off a fairly long list of American or Brittish groups. Anything but something native Spanish. When I asked them what Spanish groups they liked, I got mostly, "We are known for Flamenco music." One name that did get thrown around a few times though was Jarabe de Palo. He became famous in 1999 with his first hit, "La Flaca," a bluesy / latin lament about a guy wanting a kiss from a sexy, skinny bar girl. Jarabe turns his back on the pop formulas that have made his fellow compatriots like Enrique Iglesias or David Bisbal popular and instead does what few do today: be a musician. His guitar playing rocks you into a warm little world when he wants to be sweet, and into a latin smoke-filled tasca when he wants to spice things up a bit. Jarabe has some Cuban influences in his tunes and even teams up with Celia Cruz in the last song, "A lo loco." Ballads like "Depende" and "Agua" are simple, yet rich in harmony and guitar melodies. He likes to throw his listener into a mix that is anything but "puro" because in the so called "pure" there is no "future" (En lo puro no hay futuro). This is a CD to play after or before some James Taylor to get the heartbeat going. If you want a little taste of Jarabe, watch his video "Bonito" on AOL radio, one that Alanis Morisette liked so much, she copied for a song on her latest album. Quality songwriting, from the heart, and not from the Pop-tune machine.

No puedo expresarme mejor de este gran grupo, Jaraba de Palo es de lo mejor, siendo dueña desde la Flaca al mas nuevo albun Bonito.... Definitivamente mi favorito "Depende" me encantan! Es un grupo unico y original no hay otro como ellos. Incluye canciones tan ritmicas que te ponen a bailar a unos mas pasivas y luego una en particular que me llega, "Agua". Music that Makes you Fall in Love with Music.......2001-11-18

This is One of my all time favorite CDs, especially track number 6 "Agua". Everybody that I have played this song for tells me the same thing "Wow! What a powerful song". This song is about friends that have fallen in love, but because of life's circumstances can't be together and like the song says "Dejar que el Agua corra" ( let the water flow); it is so full of feelings. The whole CD is awsome. I own all of this groups CD's but this one is my favorite album. I recommend that you buy it so you too can enjoy quality music.

Without sounding repetitive, this album is phenominal! Musically, it's a logical continuation of the chords and melodies found on "La Flaca", but emotionally it dives much deeper into the things define us. Of all the things that can be said to describe this album, I'll only say that it's obvious Pau Dones couldn't write a bad song if he tried. Get this CD now!

The rock group originally from Spain, Jarabe de Paio, releases their first album under the Warner Music Latina label entitled Bonito. This album is full of songs that transmit optimism and a feeling of living life to the fullest. The title track "Bonito" delivers messages of peace, goodness and love. It is full of rhythm and Latin flavor, and engulfs you in a world of peace and serenity, giving listeners a different perspective of their surroundings. This album was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Elena Andujar and the group Martiers del Compas in the song "Corazon".

What the hell is this?.......2005-05-26

I bought this cd when it came out hoping it would be as good as the old ones. But I have tried to like it, forcing myself to listen to the songs, but they are cheesy, the only one that is ok is "Aun no me toca". La Flaca, was their best album ever, I guess they set the bar too high with La Flaca and now they can't do anything as good. Depende was ok but after that I don't know whats wrong with this group. I still listen to La Flaca even though I've been listening to it since it came out all the time, thats how good it is.

I stumbled upon this group when I was researching spanish pop culture for one of my classes. Man is it good! I nonchalantly ordered the CD, and to my surprise it ended up being one of my most favorite of all time. The songs make me feel good. I love Bonito, Corazon, Bailar, and my utmost favorite on the CD is Palabras que se esconden. Great ballad. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is thinking about buying it.

I love this CD! Jarabe de Palo has matured into a quality group of musicians. This cd offers the unique sound of Jarabe de Palo but I found that the music is a little more complex than their previous cd's. This is a happy CD! You will feel like dancing when listening to it. It has so many different rithms and sounds! Bonito (the most advertised song of the cd) is similar to other JP hits like Depende. But there are surprises on the album. The cd opens with Ying-Yang, a song that combines Jarabe de Palo Pop sound with a creative use of the acordeon sort of New Orleans' Zydeco or Colombia's vallenato rithms.
Corazon, the last song is so beautiful. Pop and traditional at the same time! If you like Jarabe de Palo, this is one of their best cd's.
Me encanta este disco. Es alegre y lo pone a uno con animos de bailar. En este album, Jarabe de Palo demuestra calidad. Hay canciones con el sonido tipico de Jarabe como Bonito, sin embargo la calidad del disco se nota en canciones como Ying Yang (con una increible mezcla de pop y sonido de acordeon estylo Zydeco/Vallenato) o Corazon (donde se combina el pop y la musica española tradicional. Un disco que desafia los bordes geograficos y sin embargo es bien español.

I was a bit skeptical buying this one but since I love the song bonito I decided to take a chance!
It's great! Reminds me of carlos vives and even juanes at certain points throughout the album but in my opinion better!

Jarabe's weakest work.......2005-06-15

I too am a many-years fan of Jarabe. If you are looking to expand your Jarabe collection, or looking to buy your first CD from this band, pick anything but this latest effort. Pau's song writing and the band's talent are wasted here. The lyrics are canned and the musicians seem to be sleepwalking through it. Don't get me wrong, I'll buy the next album they put out, based on their previous stuff. Hopefully this is their bump in the road.

Jarabe de Palo misses inspiration on this album.......2005-05-20

Being a big fan of Jarabe de Palo for years already, I was looking forward to hear the new album, 1m2. And to be perfectly clear and honest, I am quit disappointed. After listening several times, very concentrated and on my own, I am still looking for a reason why most of the songs seem to be so little appealing. Lack of inspiration perhaps? On former albums, like the last one Bonito, the songwriting seem to have had much more attention. Different sounds, different instruments, different guest appearances.
Un metro cuadrado, one square meter. Unfortunately the songs do not go any further than that. You can buy all Jarabe de Palo records blindfolded, this one I would simply not recommend.

JDP is one of the best groups in the spanish rock world, according no just to his native spain but almost the all of the rest of the world. With carribean, salsa, jazz, and pure rock flavors, JDP makes music that captivates all types of people. An American friend of mine who has no rhythm nor can he dance, but he has to move every time i play this album in my stereo. For those who understand spanish, the lyrics are well throught out and deep; more so than the majority of today's pop music. For quite some time we have been waiting for this record, and now we can enjoy them once again.

Jarabe de Palo es uno de los mejores grupos en el mundo de rock español según no sólo el país nativo de españa, pero casi todo el mundo. Con sabores del caríbe, salsa, jazz y puro rock, Jarabe de Palo hace música que encanta personas de todo tipo. Un amigo mio de los Estado Unidos no tiene rítmo ni puede dancar, pero el tiene que mover cada vez que toco esta album en mi stéreo.
Para los que entienden español, las letras son bien pensados y profundos mas que la gran mayoria de música pop hoy en día. Por mucho tiempo hemos esperado esta grabación de JDP, y por podemos disfrutar de ellos de neuvo.

Good - but not their best.......2004-10-09

I have been a fan of Jarabe de Palo for quite a few years now. While this album shows some stylistic experimentation, I think it comes up a bit short compared to "Depende" and "La Flaca." Still, they win points for taking risks, and as always, the lyrics are great.

Un disco Maduro!.......2002-06-20

Mientras que "La Flaca" se nos presentó como un disco divertido y "Depende" mucho mas profundo, ahora, "De vuelta y vuelta" se destaca como un disco Maduro.

Como ya nos tiene acostumbrados, Pau inserta siempre en todas sus canciones temas para hacernos reflexionar, pero tal vez nunca con tanta profundamente como "De vuelta.." y "Mama".

Otras canciones que se destacan en el album son "Tiempo" con los raperos Vico C y Jovanotti, "En lo puro no hay futuro" y mis favoritas "A gustito con la vida" y "Cara de Azul".

Si no le doy al album cinco estrellas es porque a veces me parece un tanto deprimente, un tanto no mas.

En general, lo recomiendo como uno de los mejores albumes latinos del año. Fijense que dije "albumes latinos" y no "Albumnes de rock latino."

A Favorite.......2002-06-04

I brought this CD home with me after spending a semester in Spain. It's quickly become a favorite of mine purely on its musical merit. Each song is distinctive from the others on the album, but they all tie together really well. The CD is really fun and chill at the same time.

This band can really play music.......2001-07-12

If you've seen them live you know this album doesn't make any justice to their talent as musicians. "Tiempo" and "Dos días en la vida" are my favorites, but there are many other interesting tracks such as "Completo incompleto" or "Mamá" (amazing blues/flamenco).

By the way, Pau is such an interesting person, I'm glad to say I had the chance to interview him a few months ago and he's really a nice, intelligent guy.

And correcting the guy from San Francisco, Jarabe is not a Mexican band (I wish they were!), they're Spanish.

This is the first CD of a Mexican band I have ever bought. I heard it in a music store and it hasn't left my CD player yet. Absolutely wonderful mix of musical styles, I'm surprised how much I love this CD.

You can't get this one out of your head!.......2005-01-20

I traveled throughout South America for a couple of years in the late 90's. There was no shortage of music blaring in night clubs and on the radio, but the one song I couldn't shake was the title track from this CD. I had no idea who sang it and when I finally caught the name I had to buy it. Turns out the whole CD is solid pop/rock, a good addition for your international section!

Great Album Start to Finish.......2004-07-28

I had the great fortune to live in Spain through most of 1997 and though I didnt speak spanish particularly well you cant escape the local music even if you tried. I bought several discs over there which featured a catchy song which was a hit over there only to discover that there really was nothing else worth a second listen on the disc. On the other hand, there was "La Flaca" by Jarabe de Palo. I thoroughly enjoyed this one! the title track was a giant hit that year and deservedly so. However the entier disc includes a nice mix of musical styles into a disctinctive rock sound. The only complaint I had was the use of sythesizers on two or three tracks just didnt seem to fit in with the rest of the disc, which has a very minimalist "just the music" feel to it with no electronic effects or the like. But I can overlook that for a great CD.

Like a gentle massage.......2003-05-22

American audiences may just be catching on to Spanish export because of some catchy commercials floating through the air waves featuring "La Flaca." There is a hook to Jarabe de Palo's style that makes the crossover in media very easy. His singing style is reminiscent of Juan Perro and his backup musicians play a variety of easy going pop styles. The star quality of the disc is the voice of JDP. It is one that makes an unfamiliar song sound at once quite familiar. The best illustration of this phenomena is the title track "La Flaca" which once you have heard it once will stayin your brain for days and become a part of you. It is as though you have heard the song before immediately. I guess this is why there are "radio friendly" songs as this one got a lot of airplay a few years back and continues to this day on the roc en Espanol stations. The band is tight in a loose way for a relaxed groove that fluctuates between a jazzy blues guitar rhythms, accoustic bliss and in general a soothing bit of pop balladry that features the unique Castellano vocals according to PDJ. "La Flaca" is featured twice, the accoustic version is a showcase for the vocals of JDP and finishes the set quite appropriately as that song will be playing in your head for days and years to come. Recommended for rockeros that enjoy their roc music to be in a gentle vein sometimes.

Que puedo decir de este disco? Tengo todos los discos de Jarabe de Palo, y todos tienen su sonido propio, pero La flaca es sin duda lo mejor de esta banda. Recomiendo sus otros discos tambien, pero no se puede comparar La Flaca con cualquier otro disco de Jarabe. Cada cancion es unica e inolvidable. Depende es otra cancion que me gusta y el disco De Vuelta y Vuelta es interesante, pero la coleccion de canciones en la Flaca es verdaderamente estupenda.

Music to move to.......2001-12-01

This album is easily one of my favorite CDs ever. The smooth melodies and ease of listening make it good listening any time of the day. I don't understand most of the lyrics too well, but that doesn't matter; the music is universal and speaks to the soul. Anyways, if you are new to Spanish music (and if you can understand the lyrics, you're even better off) pick up this CD...you'll find that it is in your CD player more often than your old stuff. Enjoy!
