5 out of 5 stars A Must-have additon to anyone's music library.......2007-07-11

This recording is positively alive with supercharged energy. It is not only brimming with fine performances from many of the hottest musicians of the time; it serves as proof-positive that white kids can, indeed, superbly play blues and soul music. It captures the raw energy of the ensemble performances of the (then) husband-wife team of Delaney and Bonnie Bramblett, and the exceptional backing musicians who would eventually turn up on the albums of countless other stars for another 20 or more years.

Put it in, turn it on, crank it up, and shake your booty to every tune on the CD (you can't resist going dance crazy, anyway). Don't let this one get by you. Get it while it's still in print.

5 out of 5 stars Finding gold where you'd least expect it.......2007-05-20

I originally bought this album when it first came out. I knew nothing about the record. I'd been a Cream and Blind Faith fan and seeing Eric Clapton's name on the cover caught my eye. I also loved the back and front of the album cover. I got it home and put the needle on the thing and went WOW! It had everything that Rock N'Roll is about. No one knew at that time that we were listing to the birth of Derek and The Dominoes. Bonnie Bramlett's voice is blistering and sweet at the same time. For the next 30 years I could still hear her in my brain saying "Hey would you give us some red lights, 'cause this is a red light song". The album's still in the stack on the top shelf of my closet. I saw it on Amazon and it was time again for "Goin' Home" and "That's What My Man Is For". Order it for yourself. It's rock n' roll 101 taught by finest professor's in rock academia.

5 out of 5 stars College Favorite.......2007-05-19

One of the best live albums, a perfect mix of artists and Music

5 out of 5 stars Ditto..one of the best, maybe the best, live rock album ever.......2007-05-18

What, you say, by some group named Delaney and Bonnie (Bramlett)? Whose biggest fault may have been to risk their own roles by making buddies out of the biggest names in rock and roll such as Eric Clapton, Dave Mason, and so on. The participants here went on to form the core of Derek and the Dominoes (Clapton, Carl Radle from the band Colours, solo artist Bobby Whitlock, drummer Jim Gordon).
Imagine a musical locomotive driven along by the constant chug of some solid soul and rock'n roll. Everything you would want, including the super-session-men horn section of Bobby Keys and Jim Price.
Wait, we forgot about the Bramletts. They never got the recognition they deserved, on their own. Bonnie's vocals were as soulful as anything you could ask for. And Delaney, while perhaps not quite so standout as his beautiful companion, could emote pretty well himself.
You will play this, and play it again, and play it again.

5 out of 5 stars Delaney, Bonnie & Friends, The Rest Of The Story.......2007-04-08

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

Delaney & Bonnie and Friends was a group started by Delaney and Bonnie Bramlett, which featured the elite session artists of the day, such as Carl Radle, Jim Price, Bobby Keys, Rita Coolidge, Bobby Whitlock, Jim Gordon, Leon Russell, Dave Mason and revolving guest lead guitarists which would include Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duane Allman and even some appearances with Jimi Hendrix.

Prior to their marriage and collaboration, Delaney had been a well-regarded LA session musician, and Bonnie had the distinction of being the only white Ikette, performing with the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. In later years, she turned to acting, appearing most notably on the TV shows "Fame" and "Roseanne", under her new name of Bonnie Sheridan.

In 1970, after Delaney and Bonnie & Friends, Eric Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos, with Delaney and Bonnie members, Carl Radle, Bobby Whitlock, and Jim Gordon as his rhythm section.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I just wanted everyone to know the whole story and the different cast members one might have seen while they were touring. Also notable; is that many of the Derek & The Dominos survivors, ended up becoming Leon Russell's "Shelter People". During this same era, Leon Russell and Bonnie wrote "Super Star" (Originally titled 'Groupie') and went to #1 by Karen Carpenter. Also written during this era, Leon Russell and Eric Clapton's song "Blues Power".

I have had this recording in 8 track, LP, cassette and now compact disc. One reviewer was harsh about the CD quality. IMHO every form I've ever heard, this concert made me WELL PLEASED.

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a real big favor..........2007-05-18

This might be the best favor you can do for yourself except buying their "On Tour." Oh heck, do yourself the biggest favor and buy them both. There is some song repetition between the two but one is live so it's not quite the same thing of course!!
This is SOUL personified. The album cuts they picked would have been very much what I would have chosen, how often does that happen to you? "When the Battle is Over," "Superstar" (also done well once upon a time by Rita Coolidge with Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs live tour), "Things Get Better," "Soul Shake" and "Only You Know and I Know" (!!!!! you'll be riding the same train here you'll be on when you play "On Tour"), and "Move 'Em Out" one of their very best LP cuts. Move 'Em Out" was released as a 45 rpm, never got attention it deserved.
Ok..back to "Soul Shake"....you will repeat that one quite a few times.

5 out of 5 stars "Delaney & Bonnie" Forever.......2007-04-26

"DELANEY & BONNIE" . . . musically they went together like "milk & honey" . . . and "sugar & spice" -- and everything nice . . . southern soul with an edge . . .

This "Best of" collection simply IS the very best . . . the very best music . . . the very best songs . . .the very best performances . . . the very best recordings (some "live", some studio) . . . track after track leaves you breathless and ready to hit the "replay" button . . . time after time . . .

This CD contains two "bonus tracks" which also happen to be my absolute favorite vocal deliveries by Bonnie Bramlett ever: "THAT'S WHAT MY MAN IS FOR" (Bonnie's vocal can melt the paint of the walls with emotion and feeling) . . . and "THE LOVE OF MY MAN", again, Bonnie can let out a soul touching "scream" that leaves chills in your soul - yet it also serves as a sort of "resolving chord" of closure.

Also, "FREE THE PEOPLE" with its Salvation Army band arrangement blended to the "soul sounds" creates a magic all it's own.

"NEVER ENDING SONG OF LOVE" has an extemporaneous ingenuity about its performance that gets you singing along with a smile on your face as well as a smile in your heart . . . there is a joy radiating and emanating from that track like from no other . . .

DELANEY & BONNIE created a most memorable musical snapshot and their records captured that magic for all time . . . and this "THE BEST OF DELANEY & BONNIE" CD presents us with that all-time classic miracle . . . if you remember them "from back in the day" get this CD . . . if you are too young to know who they were (and are), get this CD and you will become a life-long fan of them and their music . . .

Thanks to Delaney Bramlett and to Bonnie Bramlett for all the music . . . and for this "Best of" collection . . . you made recordings which will live for decades and decades and decades yet to come . . . and which will be unequalled -- the best of "the best of". :)

5 out of 5 stars Great Anthology Of Delaney & Bonnie.......2007-04-02

THE BEST OF DELANEY & BONNIE is a great anthology of this Great Plains soul-rock duo who influenced everyone from Leon Russell to George Harrison. The early songs are the best, although there were some great moments ("Only You Know And I Know") later on. It's unfortunate that D&B didn't quite get the recognition they deserved until after they broke up, but at least now we get to enjoy what they had to offer.

4 out of 5 stars Compelling Rock/R&B/Soul with an all star cast.......2007-02-23

Delaney Bramlett is a singer-songwriter who has a unique and powerful vision of music that combines southern R&B with hard rock and rambling country-soul. Sometimes the execution was sloppy, but the music always had a strong energy and appeal.

Delaney Bramlett was a member of the Shindogs, the house band for the TV show "Shindig." He married Bonnie Lynn O'Farrell, a member of Ike and Tina Turner's backup singing group, the Ikettes, in 1967. His voice had the southern roots, grit and country white-boy soul of a Tony Joe White. He loved playing loud guitar, and was sometimes smart enough to leave his ego aside and let others do the job. Many of the group's live appearances were sabotaged by his desire to be a guitar hero when he lacked the musical taste and sufficient sobriety to pull it off.

Bonnie Bramlett is an R&B/soul/rock singer-songwriter who has also started singing jazz tunes in recent years. She did backup chores for performers such as Fontella Bass and Albert King in the 1960's before joining the Ikettes. She co-wrote "Groupie (Superstar)" with Leon Russell, in 1969. Interestingly, she appeared in 18 episodes of the "Rosanne" TV series under the name of Bonnie Sheridan during the early 1990's.

Delaney & Bonnie, playing as a group from 1967 to 1972, oozed with talent. Three songs on this CD are live cuts from the album "Delaney & Bonnie & Friends on Tour With Eric Clapton." There is raw energy here, but also a sloppiness that likely came from way too much alcohol and drugs. "Never Ending Song of Love" and "Only You Know and I Know" and the superb "Soul Shake" let you hear Bonnie's voice to good advantage. The exciting "Piece of My Heart" showcases Bonnie's firm grounding in R&B.

As you expect with any Rhino release, the documentation and pictures are first rate. Among the big names who play on one or more cuts are Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Rita Coolidge, Steve Cropper, Jim Keltner, Bobby Keys, Dave Mason, Gram Parsons, Leon Russell, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and drummer and convicted murderer Jim Gordon.

This CD can be enthusiastically recommended for the soul singing of Bonnie Bramlett and the enjoyable amalgamation of musical influences. Delaney and Bonnie's talent and their eclectic musical vision are simply astounding. Their tremendously appealing country soul and R&B approach to music would greatly influence Clapton in the 1970's. However, the execution at times is just plain loose with the musicians more energetic than together. Five stars plus for their unique musical vision, but demerits for the sometimes poor cohesiveness and sloppy execution.

Three decades-and-change since they disintegrated in a burst of self-abuse and self-fulfilling prophecy, the darlings of '70s proto-punk/glam stage a return to the recording studio that's as unlikely as it is good-natured. The opening triptych of "We're All in Love," "Runnin' Around," and the downright nostalgic "Plenty of Music" argues that remaining band members David Johanson and Syl Sylvain are more interested in celebrating their survival with a little sass than rehashing the sonic anarchy that made them. Yet veteran producer Jack Douglas never lets the band (now featuring Hanoi Rocks bassist Sammi Yaffa, guitarist Steve Conte, Brian Koonin on keyboards, and drummer Brian Delaney) become too absorbed in more focused songcraft here, injecting the same edgy, pop-buzz he imparted to Cheap Trick and Aerosmith on the infectious soul-punk single "Dance Like a Monkey" and elsewhere. Helping celebrate the Dolls revival in fine fashion are guest turns by Iggy Pop (the frantic "Gimme Luv & Turn On the Light") and Michael Stipe (who harmonizes on the ballad "Dancing on the Lip of the Volcano"), as well as Against Mel's Tom Gabel on the trademark rave-up "Punishing World." The Dolls have always been a triumph of attitude over art; ultimately little has changed here other than the bracing exuberance they bring with them this time 'round. First pressings of the release contain a 45-minute "making of" featurette as well as the bonus track "17," a lugubrious workout featuring Dolls inspiration/rock progenitor Bo Diddley. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

Now in 2006, The NEW YORK DOLLS return with the follow-up to 1974's Too Much Too Soon that proves that the band hasn't lost a step and that they are ready to show the world what they've been missing. The new studio album "One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This" captures the spirit of a band that had disappeared long before rock n roll became about big business, and presents the essence of fun, revelatory Rock N Roll in its purest form.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An Australian discovers the Dolls.......2007-06-27

Having recently taken an interest in the New York scene and the wonderful music that has fermented there over the past 30 years or so it was inevitable that I look closer at the "Dolls" I love every track on this cd and regard it a must have along with the 2 original Dolls albums. David Johansen is a great talent with his Dolls persona and the Buster Poindexter phase. Such depth of talent lasts and grows. This cd, 30 years after their first releases is missing 3 of the original band but is not diminished by that although it would be just wonderful to have had Johnny Thunders still with us. This oustanding piece of work is a credit to David and Syl who have created a wonderful work that stands out in these days of impoverished commercial with no roots.

2 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-06-24

We all know that Johansen and Sylvain are the only original Dolls on this project. That's OK since they were part of the NY Dolls creative core and most of David Johansen's best solo material was cowritten with Sylvain. I had high hopes, but the songs on this disc have the feel of something that was cobbled together in a studio under a time restraint rather than that of songs that came to the New Dolls in moments of inspiration. The Dolls trademard dueling left speaker/right speaker half-lead-half-rhythm guitars is sorely missed. David Jo's voice sounds kind of shot. I don't know. This sounds like OK rock and roll. There's just nothing really special about it. This is too bad because I really wanted to like this.

4 out of 5 stars back to the rock jungle.......2007-06-09

I will remember "the Dolls" for more than the debut in 1973 with songs like "personality crises" and the second album with songs like "stranded in the jungle".The album "one day it will please us to remember even this" is the best album yet, well produced and mixed by Jack Douglas." the Dolls"
has been better musicians over the years and is not so revolutionary now.Its a pop-party album with rock touch and some various ballads. The best tracks are punishing world, gotta get away from tommy, and running around which is miles better than the rolling stones has been recorded the last 10 years so i will always remember this record as the best new york dolls ever did?

5 out of 5 stars THE DOLLS RETURN!.......2007-05-10

Granted there are only 2 original members on this album, but it still rocks. The production is a little too slick for my taste, but the songs are phenomenal (with the exception of "Rainbow Store") and more than worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Lose.......2007-04-11

If you've bought this album, you either know the Dolls and their music, or you don't. But no matter which side of that tautology you fall on, you can't lose.

If you don't already know the Dolls, this is a collection of great rock songs, tightly written, well-produced, with smart and funny lyrics. Just listen to "Dance Like A Monkey," a hilarious shot at creationism with a thick, bouncy bass line. Or try "Gotta Get Away From Tommy," which combines piano work, a Ramones riff, and one of the funniest first verses I've ever heard. Possibly the best song on the album is "Dancing On the Lip Of A Volcano," a tremendous, building anthem. You might also recognize the voice of Michael Stipe on this song. Some other names on this album that might sound familiar: Sami Yaffa, Steve Conte, and Iggy Pop. So if you like what you hear here, find out just who the New York Dolls were and are by getting their first two albums.

The rest of you know the story. You know that David Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain are the only surviving members. The rest of the players on this album, regardless of how good they are, are more or less session members. The result is that the album sounds less like a New York Dolls album, and more like an album by a band that has been influenced by the Dolls. Anticipating this, Johansen, Sylvain, and company have crafted a work that celebrates the Dolls's music and legacy. Songs like "Maimed Happiness," "Fishnets & Cigarettes," and "Take A Good Look At My Good Looks" tell the story of where they've been and where they are. For further proof just look to the album's title.

Far from lacking in authenticity, this album proves the spirit of the Dolls is alive and well, even if most of the original members aren't.

5 out of 5 stars Motel Shot.......2007-02-23

Remember how you go back and check out music that you thought was so cool, so hip or so hot - you search for years, finally find it and then are disappointed? Motel Shot does NOT fall into this category. This album still surprises me with its excellent harmonies and free falling songs. It goes beyond my expectations and still thrills me. Check out the musicians on this record and go back in time.

5 out of 5 stars Give Delaney his props!.......2006-06-23

I agree with the rest of the reviewers, GREAT album. However, the highlight song for me is Delaney singing "Faded Love". Obsolutely by far the best version I've ever heard of this classic! What an interpretation!

5 out of 5 stars Motel Shot, Great Unplugged Before It Was A Fad.......2005-11-28

What can you say. Delaney and Bonnie did an unplugged before this became a fad. And what came out was one of the best albums from the 1970's. A combination of soul, gospel, folk, and rock-and-roll. Its a combination that works. Doing famous traditional songs like "Will The Circle be Unbroken", to spiritual music "Talkin About Jesus". Others songs, like "Going Down The Road" just add so much to this album. From the great piano playing to just the raw emotion in this album. Bonnie Bramlett voice seemed at her best. This album shows the early 1970's was a creative era in music. I can't say more about this album.

This is a beautiful collection of relaxing, mellow, good-timing tunes from one of the finest bands ever to tour America. The level of musicianship is very high, what with Duane Allman, Jim Keltner, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell et al., but the sound is relaxed, mellow, compassionate and wonderful. This is a gem of an overlooked album, mixing gospel, soul, country, rock, and hymnals, that should not be missed!

5 out of 5 stars Why Aren't These People Big Stars?.......2003-05-23

The last time I saw Bonnie Bramlet was on the Rosanne show - playing a neighbor who was married to David Crosby - and they all sat around the back yard singing..and she sounded AMAZING! The fact that she is not a huge star with armies of worshiping fans has always mystified me. This is a classic Delaney and Bonnie album. If you like these 2 incredible singers then get this one. Its got "Only You Know and I Know" and "Superstar" which are both worth the cost of the album alone. If you don't know them, then get the live concert album first (with Clapton and Harrison) and listen to it and you will understand why these folks are worthy of our worship and admiration. Then get this album and anything else either of them recorded...Delany and Bonnie Bramlet are simply THE most under-appreciated, unknown and talented rock and rollers that the 60's produced...and don't forget - Eric Clapton stole their band became Derek and the Dominos. I would rate the live album and Motel Shot right up there with anything done by the Beatles, Stones, anyone...in the late 60's - early 70's D&B could have kicked anyone's butt right off the stage. Their albums are not that easy to find so buy this one..and buy all of them! Spread the word!!

5 out of 5 stars Soulful Memphis Down-Home Gospel Groove.......2006-11-15

How could this one have passed me by thirty or so years ago. I was listening to Delaney & Bonnie On Tour with Eric Clapton in my dorm room back in 1969. And I even caught them live at the old Capital Theatre in Portchester, NY around early 1970. Believe it or not they were the headliners and the opening act was The Allman Brothers Band and Johnny Winter And. But I loved all of their stuff, especially To Bonnie From Delaney. I always thought of their act as a kind of "Blue-Eyed Soul" version of Ike & Tina Turnner. But this album, Home seems to have completely passed me by.

That is until now. How could I have not heard this somewhere, someplace? Stax records and their trademark Memphis Soul "house-band", (better known as Booker T & The MG's)....COME ON!!!...Where Was I????.......All I know is I'm sure glad I caught up with this Soulful Memphis Down-Home Gospel Groove EXTRAVAGANZA!!!!!!BABY THIS ROCKS.......CRANK IT UP!!!!!Delaney & Bonnie can compete with the likes of Ike & Tina and even Otis & Carla.

If you like Memphis Soul and want to hear the best......I mean some of the very best session players that ever blew...Then check this puppy out!!!! I can't stop playing this disc man........How the F..............did I miss this one all those years ago???????

4 out of 5 stars Deep Soul.......2006-10-14

If Gram Parsons (and, I would argue, Gene Clark) was the first musical artist to marry 1960's Rock and Roll with Country and Western, then Delaney & Bonnie may have been the first to marry Rock with Soul. Sounding like a white Otis Redding and Tina Turner (Bonnie was once an Ike-ette), and with Booker T. and the MGs backing them on most of the tracks, the mercurial couple rip through a set of heartfelt, gut-wrenching Southern soul, with some Rock and Roll Attitude. It's no wonder that after hearing this record, people like Eric Clapton and George Harrison were willing to drop what they were doing to be mere sidemen is Delaney & Bonnie's band. The sound is raw, the songs are great, and it is a great pleasure to listen to the singing of both Delaney and Bonnie, each of them being gifted vocalists. This is like Exile on Main St. meets Otis Redding's Greatest Hits.

This arrived the other day, I pre ordered it. Two of the greatest songwriters ever in my opinion. Its about time this was available on CD and here it is. Sounds great! Go get it for the collection.

5 out of 5 stars full circle.......2006-05-28

D+B are the soundtrack of my high school and college years. My albums are literally worn out and I am replacing them with cds--FINALLY! I got this one first as an LP when I was 15. It hasn't aged a bit. I, on the other hand.........well!

A classic!

5 out of 5 stars The start of it all.......2004-04-01

Alot of people don't realize what this album started. This album basically gave the Southern sound a major boost in the arm and brought it to the attention of the rest of the U.S. This album is a great mix of R n B, gospel, R n R and the blues naturally. Bonnie's voice was a breath of fresh air, a voice not accustom to being heard on a R n R station, but that was the beauty of FM back in the late sixties, they were alot more open to hearing and playing what was good, not just the hits.

This album was a boost for Leon Russell too, you can hear his distinctive piano and know he had a lot of influence on the production of this album. I remembering seeing D @ B live on their debut tour,I can't remember who they opened for, but I remember seeing this guy with a beard and wearing a top hat playing the piano, he blew me away - Leon Russel was his name. He followed this by playing on Dave Mason's first solo album after leaving Traffic and his sound is very pronounced on that album.

Eric Clapton after hearing D @ B, he was so influenced by them that he truely wanted to join this band and did for a tour later on and they recorded that and it's available - Delaney and Bonnie On Tour with Eric Clapton.

Without the rythym section of D @ B - Carl Radle and Jim Gordan -you wouldn't of had Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen (put together by Leon Russel including Bobby Keyes and Whitlock on horns) or Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominoes (along with Duane Allman). As you know Bobby Keyes went on to play with the Rolling Stones and has been there for about 30 years now. On Eric Clapton's first solo effort, if you read the band members, you'll notice that it's Delaney and Bonnie and friends.

This band surely has a rich influence and history in the R n R circus and definitely deserves a listen to if you've never heard
them. R n R owes them a debt in my opinion.

Not taking anything away from their other albums, I just love this one the best - it had quite an influence on me. This is one of my all time favorite albums!!!! ENJOY!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Foundation Recording.......2004-01-20

Amazing recording with Delaney (g), Jim Keltner (d), Jim Price, Bobby Keys (horns), Bobby Whitlock (kb), Leon Russell (p), Carl Radle (b), Jerry McGee (g). Very funky early Southern rock in
L.A. - soon after this Eric Clapton joined band as sideman!
Album features a Mac Rebennack (Doctor John) tune (When This Battle Is Over) and lots more. Like Allman Brothers? Get this!

4 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL!.......2003-01-29

Amazing CD! It's a must for every Delaney And Bonnie collector.
It's a shame that "HOME" is no longer available on CD. There is a RARE recording called GENESIS. I understand that the songs are actually demos. I have the LP. To my knowledge, it is not available on commercial CD. So much time has passed by that I think every recording should be released on CD.

5 out of 5 stars Before Derek and the Dominos.......2003-01-26

If it hadn't been for Delaney and Bonnie, there might have been no Derek and the Dominos. When you listen to this album, you can hear easily hear the influence. This blues/jazz/gospel sound might have not made Delaney and Bonnie that well-known to the public (except for True Music Fans) but I guarantee you that Eric Clapton knows who they are. After all, he played with them. I have to admit I'm really surprised there are no reviews here. You really should buy this album.

    Album Description

The husband-and-wife duo of Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett created some of the most distinctive and unique music of the early 1970s, but their alchemical sound -- equal parts blue-eyed soul, blues, country, and gospel -- was often marginalized by the attention instead paid to the contributions of their famous "friends," including rock icons like Eric Clapton, Duane Allman and George Harrison. Included in Home are the songs 'It's Been a Long Time Coming' and 'Everybody Loves a Winner'. Ace. 2004.
