5 out of 5 stars An Adult Love Story.......2007-05-13

OK, it is 40 years old, but still the only real adult movie love story. Caught it in a Cinema in Tottenham Court Road, London with new girl friend in 1970. Wow. We loved it. (Sequal not so good by the way). The original has it all, friends, love , cars, kids, France, lots of silences, caring, sadness and JOY.

5 out of 5 stars The real thing!.......2007-05-12

This is the REAL soundtrack from the movie, in French, just as the movie was. I've been searching for this for years, and it's just as lush, romantic and wonderful as it was all those millenia ago when I was in school!

5 out of 5 stars Once upon a time.......2007-03-24

After reading the reviews lamenting the price of the Amazon import, I am puzzled why no one has mentioned the double CD of the "A Man and a Woman" soundtrack (in the original French) along with the execrable "Live For Life." I bought it at Barnes and Noble for $20 if memory serves. Throw out the second half and enjoy "Samba Sarava" and everything else, even if you can't speak French, and remember a 40-year-old love.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best jazz scores of the 20th Century.......2007-02-10

Man, I still play this gorgeous, sentimental score frequently, as I absorbed it when I was an odd toddler stuck in the woods with a bunch of hicks listening to Porter Wagoner.

WHY IS THIS OUT OF PRINT IN AMERICA? WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY COUNTRY? IS THERE NO RESPECT ANYMORE FOR THESE BEAN COUNTER RECORD BUSINESS HUCKSTERS FOR BEAUTY OR POSTERITY?

Highlights: Samba Saravah, Stronger Than Us (the instrumental version), and Nicole Croiselle singing "Today's It's You."

The United Artists LP released in 1967 is the real thing. I dont have problems with the english language version, except the english is heavily accented. The english lyrics are actually quite fitting, but the French is superior.

5 out of 5 stars Like stepping back in time!.......2006-07-05

This is the original motion picture soundtrack that won the grand prize in 1966 at the Cannes Film Festival. I saw this movie in 1968 and I still have the record album! (Who can part with great music and French besides???)I am so happy to have this CD that I can play in my car and elsewhere as I no longer possess a turntable for the LP. For me it was well worth the extra money.

Thanks to the radio ubiquity of "2Wicky" (from their debut album, A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular), Hooverphonic won mainstream attention and early admission into the trip-hop pantheon. But this Belgian group's sound was always closer to the warm etherealness and pop aspirations of bands like Australia's Single Gun Theory than the wispy experimentalism of Britain's Portishead. Well, they'll probably still be labeled a trip-hop band, but Blue Wonder Power Milk is essentially an electronica-tinged symphonic pop album--and a very strong one, at that. The breathy coo of new vocalist Geike Arnaert melds effortlessly with the languid beats of tracks like "Club Montepulciano" and "Eden" as well as with the more muscular drum & bass of "Battersea." In fact, almost all the songs--many of which are augmented by simple string arrangements--possess a beguiling beauty guaranteed to keep your finger on the repeat button. Highly recommended. --Steve Landau

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Astounding.......2007-03-12

I had first heard of Hooverphonic on 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' when their song '2Wicky' played in the scene where Sarah Michelle Gellar seeks sanctuary in her chartacter's family-owned General Store. As I listened to the song play, I began to like the mellow beat and almost celestial sound.

The next summer saw the release of 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' and, once more, they used material from Hooverphonic. The song 'Eden' played during a scene where Jennifer Love Hewitt remembered her best friend from last summer and what happened to her. I fell in love with the song and the group then.

I bought this CD and fell in love with it too! 'Battersea' and it's upbeat ballad mixed with strings, 'Eden' and it's slow-paced beat and sad mood.

Basically the whole CD had me wanting more. A great CD to relax to.

A great, big Thank You to Alex Steyermark, Sharon Boyle and John Houlihan (Music Supervisors on 'I Know What You Did Last Summer And 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer') for choosing to use their material. If it hadn't been for them, I would've never gotten to discover such great band.

5 out of 5 stars Eden.......2007-01-13

The first time I heard this was at friend's house. It was loaded onto an iPod and started playing as the alarm went off one morning...I had never heard of this band or any of their music before. The first words out of my mouth were, "What band is this?...I LOVE this music."

Hooverphonic's music is almost magical. The beauty of their sound borders on mystical. I now have it loaded onto my computer and play it all the time. I LOVE this album.

5 out of 5 stars Just Love It..........2006-05-05

Hooverphonic is one of my favorite bands and this album does not disappoint. It's one of the best trip hop albums out there and I highly recommend it. I have every Hooverphonic CD and Blue Wonder Power Milk is my absolute favorite. They never seem to let me down. My ipod is totally stuffed to the max with their music.

5 out of 5 stars Truly Heavenly Music Corporation.......2006-04-06

I heard "This Strange Effect" on a cell phone ad recently and had to have it. Tracked the CD down through Amazon.com,listened to the samples and decided to buy it even though on my initial listen no other song stuck out like "Strange Effect". When I got to listen to the whole CD, it blew me away. Another reviewer astutely pointed out that the strings in "Battersea" are reminiscent of Henryk Gorecki's "Symphony No.3". They also make a few more appearances on other songs. What's lovely about "Battersea" is the perfect mix of strings playing as if they were ascending into heaven, Geike Arnaert's lovely/sweet voice, the bass & drums that subtly get louder than softer in the mix and the great melody provided by Mr. Callier. Though there's not a bad song in the bunch, my faves are "Battersea","Dictionary", the sexy/weird "Club Montepulciano","Eden",freaky/funky "Lung","This Strange Effect","Tuna" and "Magenta",the trippy official closing song. The bonus song is named after the album.
I tend to write lyrics like these (strange,poetic,off-balance,left-of-center)for my own songs(Hear Jay Thing's "Guardians of the Underworld)and know that some folks dig them and some don't. But the music is so hypnotic, lush and beautiful you don't need to know what the lyrics are anyway.
This is wonderful futuristic symphonic pop and I can't wait to check out the rest of their catalogue. As has been pointed out in these reviews, this CD sounds especially awesome when listened to with headphones. So go dig it boys & girls!

4 out of 5 stars Hooverphonic will always be one of my favorites........2006-03-03

Hooverphonic is a great trippy band. Their first album was awesome, but it seems that this one falls a bit short of the Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. Don't get me wrong, I love this disc, but it's not quite as good as the first. Now I am still glad I bought this CD! "Eden" and "This Strange Effect" are both great songs, and so is the rest of the album, The new cd is full of compelling vocals and beautiful string arrangments. It's music that can't be categorized, sythesizers, violins, guitars and an overall electronic sound to bring the whole thing together. The vocals, sounds, music, etc, are very original and unique.. If you enjoy this type of music, I recommend these artists: "Portishead", "Spicehouse", "Single Cell Orchestra", "Mandalay" and "Stereolab". Hooverphonic will always be one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2006-07-13

This music is simply breathtaking. Just especially beautiful. I have both this version, the two-CD complete version, and the English. The two-CD set (I think 52 tracks) is the best. This is second best. The music in this abridged CD is not presented in chronological order, however, and sometimes, due to this and the missing tracks, there is something lacking. However, it's just gorgeous music.

The acoustics are amazing. I'm not sure if this is really noticeable unless you hear it immediately before or after the English version. The cast is absolutely amazing. There is so much emotion in their voices.

I'm surprised there is so little about Richard Cocciante, the composer. This music is some of the best I've heard. I would have thought there was an abundance of music written by Richard Cocciante that I haven't heard. From what I can find out online, there isn't. This is just a masterpiece.

There are many reviewers who mention the translation issue. If you think of this as a popular musical, I can see that the translation may be an issue. However, think of it as an opera-- which it also is (not in the classical sense). We don't concern ourselves with the translation of La Traviata, La Boheme. Same with this. . . just enjoy the music.

If you can possibly find the 2 CD complete set (sometimes available for download elsewhere, find it before purchasing this. But, if you can't find it, get this. Also, as a side note. . . the DVD has the entire libretto included and offers English subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars i would give this musical more stars if i could.......2006-05-07

i am so in love with this musical. it was the first french musical i'd ever seen. my french teacher showed it to the whole class after we had translated every single song into english. the hard work definitely paid off. the musical was amazing. i immediately fell in love and became obsessed. i couldn't stop listening to the CD. i love garou and bruno pelletier. they're both very talented, along with everyone else in the musical.

i really want to buy the two-disc CD, but i can't find it. does anyone know where i can buy it?

5 out of 5 stars I would. . ........2006-01-26

. . . highly recommend this album. the songs are beautiful and the singers seem to carry over the emotions that the characters feel to the listener. AWESOME!

5 out of 5 stars A journey with Esmeralda.......2006-01-19

When I first saw the perfomance of Notre Dame de Paris by original francophone troupe of singers for the first time, right away I fell in love with the music of Riccardo Cocciante and the gorgeous voices of the singers.

Being lucky to be able to understand the lyrics, I was pleasantly surprised by the awesome lyrics of Luc Plamondon, even if the lyrics are not necessary to understand the mood and the emotions that the songs transmit, knowing the words helps you to completely immerse into the play and feel the same emotions that the play characters, to live the story yourself.

With "Bohemienne" we see a clear picture of a young gypsy girl wandering in the mountains and valleys of Andalusia, playful and free, a little sad because she lives only for the present, every tomorrow is a new mystery, a new journey.

"Belle" depicts a stunning young woman, with sensual moves and penetrating eyes, dancing on the square while all the men are ready to do anything to be with her.

"Tu va me detruire" demonstrates the unconrolled desire of the priest towards Esmeralda, the man who dedicated all his life to sience and religion who now is ready to surpass all his beliefs, descend to hell only if she would be his. While he is discovering his dark side, Esmeralda falls in love with a beau captaine, Phoebus, who is betraying his fiancée with her.

Meanwhile his fiancée Fleur de Lys is reflecting on how to get her loved one back : in "La monture" she makes plan of vegeance to Esmeralda, she is calling her a witch, the hatred and jelousy are overtaking her while she says to Phoebus "I will come back to you only if Esmeralda will be executed ".

As the story ends the spectator/listener is taken over by
the desperation of innocent and proud Esmeralda before being executed, the depth and the eternity of Quasimodo's feelings.

I really love all the singers and ever since I have Notre Dame de Paris I don't miss an album by any of the singers from the musical. I have discovered for myself such great artists as Garou, Bruno Pelletier, Patrick Fiori.

It's a must for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Notre Dame de Paris.......2005-09-25

Excellent CD if you want to listen to opera in short. However, if you are really interested, it's better to buy a 2-disc edition or a DVD to enjoy this wonderful music in full.

Cable has done some wonderful things for American television--challenging dramas that are too extreme for the networks get made, actors get to stretch their talents, and there's always South Park. But cable's also responsible for constant reruns of Z-grade movies, has-been and never-was stars, and, er, South Park. Striding the fine line is La Femme Nikita, a hit on the USA network, that wants to play in the big leagues (The X-Files, Ally McBeal, Melrose Place) by releasing its own soundtrack. Unfortunately, most of the acts here are either has-beens or never-weres, and few of the more familiar names stretch out to do anything truly interesting or new (even Mark Snow's theme pales in comparison to the one he did for The X-Files). Morphine are as moodily moving as ever, Fluke and Keoki contribute nice dance-floor numbers, and Curve's "Chinese Burn" rocks as hard as it did the first time it was released--on their Come Clean album. --Randy Silver

5 out of 5 stars quite pleased.......2007-07-13

As an avid enjoyer of Le Femme Nikita I was very pleased with the second series cod set. Only one CD was a bit unviewable (partially) but overall I was pleased. I find it hard to complain about such an exciting and plot twisting series such as Nikita. I love it. I only wish it would have continued. I see Alias has tried to capture the same kind of audience but it just does not come close..No one can compare to Peta Wilson and no one is as unscrupulous as Section One.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Soundtrack.......2007-04-03

I love the show. And I love the soundtrack. It is the heart of the show. I just wish there was more music from the show.

Any fan will love this cd. It leaves you wanting more. More music from the show. The only bad thing I have to say about it is that they stopped at one cd. The same thing with the show. They stopped at 5 seasons.

4 out of 5 stars La Femme Nikita: Music From The Television Series.......2007-01-07

I love all the songs, but it could be more perfect if every song wherein Nikita and Michael have some moments together be included, especially the one when they vaulted out from Section I.

I ran across this album completely by accident and I was hooked at first listen. I know nothing about Olivia Ruiz, but I really like this album. From the semi-non-traditional instrumentation (ukelele, clarinet, turntables) to her passionate voice, this album is worth hearing.

Makes me wish I would have kept up on my high school French.

    3 out of 5 stars A Slight Innacuracy.......2007-06-13

The version of "Nadia's Theme" (Theme from The Young and the Restless) isn't actually the one you're expecting. I believe it's actually the original arrangement made for "Bless the Beasts and the Children". So what later became the Young and the Restless theme (the one that was a hit) still remains unreleased on CD.

Hopefully, we can see that version on a future release. Maybe they could get "Little Ballerina Blue" on one while they're at it.

    Still, some great stuff here.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals, Vol. 2.......2006-03-22

The purchase went as we had hoped. The delievry was as promised, and the quality of the product equal too, or above our expectations.

3 out of 5 stars Not totally an instrumental.......2006-03-10

I was excited to find this album. I bought it but was horrified to find a loud vocal on the first track. The rest of the music is all instrumental but this one track simply JARS you when it plays. Very disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Another Collection You Wonr Find Anywhere else.......2003-05-06

Well, ERIC records has done it again.

Continuing their unique practice of giving us both well known hits and impossible to find rarities, Eric presents Volume 2 of "Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals". This one is, in my opinion, even better than the first.

First off, the sound quality of this disk is ASTOUNDING. ERIC has gotten the various reissue departments to provide them with absolute first generation mono and stereo masters and this CD proves it. The aural quality is breathtaking. The fact that Orchestral music is so beautifully suited for true stereo playback is exhibited here, as a whopping 15 of the 20 tracks are True Stereo and sound magnificent.

There are, of course, the big soundtrack hits here, like 'The Day The Rains Came" "Rocky", "Ben Casey", "Theme from The Apartment", and " Nadias Theme". All top 30 and well remembered. However, for this 43 year old fan, it was the some of the lessor known tracks, in particulatr the 1963 Colpix low level charter "Theme From The Long Ships" that really makes this collection the gem that it is. Outstanding tracks include "Theme From The Sundowners" , "The Dark At The Top of The Stairs" and "I Will Follow Him" , all tracks that will suddenly sound familiar again after first listen.

Therein lies the BEST part of this collection. When you put this on your player, you will be treated to a nostalgic feast,
a time when the magic of Orchestral music still ruled the charts, and existed in all our homes. And you'll certainly remember most of these once you hear them, which is the fun part!!

There arent enough great things I can say about this collection AND its sister CD "Hard To Find pop Instrumentals- Part 2" I personally liked this volume better, but if you dont have either yet, give yourself a musical treat, and some REAL listening enjoyment and pick these up...

Its listening the way it used to be.

Delibes's opera Lakmé is full of gorgeous melodies, even if you don't count the coloratura sensation, the famous "Bell Song." That aria virtually demands a soprano of Sutherland's agility and ease, and it gets it here (this is the highlights version of Sutherland's complete recording). Even the few singers who can match her in the upper altitudes can't do it with a voice so rich and full. Sutherland's is a Lakmé beyond comparison with twittering, thin-voiced, coloratura specialists. She did make this recording at a time when her diction was mushy and her vocal lines sometimes drooped, so she's not beyond criticism. But revel in the voice; after all, Lakmé is a cardboard character, and the opera, for all its considerable charms, isn't another Ring cycle. Sutherland's colleagues are excellent too. Vanzo was one of the finest lyric tenors of his generation, and he's by far the best Gérald on disc. Jane Berbié and Gabriel Bacquier are also unmatched, and Bonynge's conducting is idiomatic and flowing. Add engineering from Decca/London's golden age of recording, and here's a Lakmé to treasure. --Dan Davis

    5 out of 5 stars Delibes: Lakme - Sutherland.......2007-05-14

A brilliant rendition of Delibes: Lakme - runs about 13 minutes and every minute is a delight. Sutherland captures the full essence of the opera.

    4 out of 5 stars Incomparable voice.......2006-11-06

For those both familiar and unfamiliar with Sutherland's beautiful voice, this CD won't disappoint. It's a nice compilation. Sutherland's performance singing the "Flower Song" has got to be among the most beautiful musical experiences I know of. I bought myself one recently and one for a friend. I plan to buy more for Christmas presents!

5 out of 5 stars the perfect vehicle for Sutherland.......2001-06-28

I'm a fan of those great operas that for whatever reason aren't immediately thought of by the general public when asked to name an opera. So Lakme is no Carmen- it doesn't need to be. So the plot is paper-thin: that's what Verdi and Wagner are for. I was glad to hear Joan paired with another great soprano for the flower duet. Jane Berbie comes dangerously close to overshadowing Joan Sutherland, with her sultry, rich style.

I have one other recording of Joan Sutherland singing the Bell Song. It is on her Art of the Prima Donna CD. That rendition is slower, more technically precise, with less flourishes. On this recording of Lakme, she speeds it up considerably, with a few more flourishes.

A third highlight is her duet with Alain Vanzo, "Lakme! Lakme! C'est toi..." What a wonderful, wonderful pairing and performance. Curiously enough, this gorgeous duet isn't even mentioned on the back of the CD jewel case as one of the high points of this highlights package!

Not every "highlight" here will take your breath away, but if nothing else, you can push the repeat button, and listen to the meltingly beautiful flower song again and again.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Music.......2000-10-24

This incredible music moved me to tears and lifted my spirits to the heights. I heartily recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars "top film scores of the 1960's ~ Percy Faith".......2004-02-18

If you are a collector of Percy Faith, you must run out to your local music store and pick this one up ~ "Plays The Academy Award Winner Born Free and Other Great Movie Themes" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9450 in 1967) and "Windmills of Your Mind" (originally released on Columbia Records CS 9835 in 1969) ~ following the formula of previous Columbia Records releases featuring Faith's classic style of sweeping strings and haunting arrangements, they've come up with two more winners.

Master of arranging, Faith's formula is so natural in keeping the arrangements fresh and new with his distinctive style ~ his tasteful treatment always highlights the quality of the composition ~ ultimately making them a hit all over again. Remember the days when you could turn on the radio and hear Percy Faith with many familiar pop standards ~ when you put this compact disc on your player, get ready for the "Percy Faith Touch" sprinkled with pure magic over the orchestration and leaves you simply in that unforgettable mood.

Top performances inclusive for the twenty two tracks of film score themes ~ "A MAN AND A WOMAN" (Barouh/Lai), "A TIME FOR LOVE" (Webster/Mandel), "ALFIE"(David/Bacharach), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart), "BORN FREE"(John Barry), "CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG" (Richard M. Sherman/Robert B. Sherman), "ELVIRA'S THEME" (Percy Faith), "FOR LOVE OF IVY" (Russell/Quincy Jones), "THEME FROM "THE FOX" (Lalo Schlfrin), "FUNNY GIRL" (Merrill/Styne), "GEORGY GIRL"(Dale/Springfield), "THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER" (Peggy Lee/David Grusin), "HOW ARE THINGS IN GLOCCA MORRA?"(Harburg/Lane), "THE LION IN THE WINTER"(John Barry), "SONG FROM "THE OSCAR" (Evans/Livingston/Percy Faith), "THEME FROM "THE SAND PEPPLES" (Bricusse/Goldsmith), "SOMEWHERE MY LOVE(Lara's Theme from "Dr. Zhivago")"(Webster/Jarre), "STAR" (Cahn/Van Heusen), "THIS IS MY SONG" (Charles Chaplin), "THIS HOTEL" (Keating/Quine), "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" and "THE WISHING DOLL" (David/Bernstein) ~ notice two of the selections were composed by the man himself Percy Faith! Impressive line up of top movie songs that will surely satisfy the appetite of all "film-score-buffs" and Percy Faith fans...gotta love it!
