Hesperion XX and others.......2007-03-28

This is a truly inspirational disc that features several different artists. I came across this disc years ago because of my interest in time period music performed by Jordi Savall and the lovely voice of Monteserrat Figueras in the group Hesperion XX. Both are featured on this disc extensively. Listening to this music is almost like a religious experience, it elevates your senses beyond the mundane for a richly rewarding experience; it is an auditory time warp. Essentially this is a compilation of time period music with compositions mostly from the 1500's. Besides the fabulous work by Hesperion XX the disc also includes some interesting work by Hopkinson Smith on Vihuela while Figueras sings in her lovely soprano voice. There are also some nice orchestra pieces most notably by Issac Ibeniz on "Iberia, El Puerto" which is a lush theme that would sit well in a movie about Spain's Golden Age, Manuel de Falla's beautiful compostion of "El Sombrero De Tres Picos" as performed by Joven Orchestra Nacional de Espana and Roberto Gerhard's "Don Quijote Albada Danza" as performed by the Orchestra Sinfonica de Tenerife. Also of note is the work of Francisco Guerau and the magical baroque guitar of Hopkinson Smith as performed on "Treze diferencias de Canario." Listening to this music reminds one of the grandeur of Spains's past in the Age of Discovery. This is classical album for people like me, who really don't know that much about classical music but realizes good music when he hears it. Recommended for people who like to listen to time period music and the interpretations of Hesperion XX.

I did'nt really like classical music till i bought España - Anthology of Spanish Music CD. I really, really love this CD. If your an artist and sometimes lack inspiration, I recommend this CD! It will get you in the mood to paint!

Great collection.......2000-11-04

Two complaints: no liner notes so any potential educational value is lost (I have a number of reference books around the house and some of these composers don't show up anywhere in them) and there is at least one extremely jarring organ work that blasts out of nowhere. A more listener friendly compilation would've sequenced the disc differently or left it out alltogether. That said, this is a wonderful collection of music that I have (mostly) never heard before. I'm glad Naive Astree saw fit to put a lot of obscure and out-of-print recordings together to form this audio introduction to an underappreciated canon.

Highlights include:

Track 8 - Jordi Savall (gamba), Ton Koopman (harpsichord), and Rolf Lislevand (lute) turn in a brief but jaunty chamber performance of Ortiz. Left me wanting more.

Track 11 - Hesperion XX give a haunting vocal performance of Morales' Pie Jesu Domine. I'm not one to ususally appreciate this sort of music (so consider me uninformed) but I found this truly beautiful.

Track 15 - features Hopkinson Smith on the baroque guitar performing a fascinating Guerau work. Descending arpeggios like gentle, trickling waterfalls. Smith is a stunning performer. I wish he was better known in the U.S.

Track 22 - from Haydn's original orchestral version of "The Seven Last Words Of Christ On The Cross," this is the one tempestuous movement from a work of mostly subdued music. Deep, powerful string sound from Savall's Le Concert Des Nations. Very well recorded.

While I'd like to know more about the works and the composers behind them there is so much here to be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level that I can't whine too much. If you have any interest, by all means pick up this bargain. You will be introduced to a number of great performers and works.

The CD I want to lend to everyone . . ........2004-04-27

. . . except that it's the CD I don't want to lend to anyone. As masterful and elegant as anything you'll ever hear, but also highly accessible (in fact I caught my 18-year-old definitely-not-a-baroque-fan brother whistling the first Zelenka aria -- rather spiritedly, too -- after just one incidental hearing). Tafelmusik's playing is a pleasure throughout, for its trademark freshness and immediacy -- I especially enjoy Vivaldi's "String Concerto in C Major" on this disk -- and the arias practically seem to be made for Matthew White. From the lively brilliance of Zelenka, to the gentle "Noli o cara te adorantis" from Vivaldi's "Juditha triumphans" (the words are actually kind of sinister, but could you really cut off the head of anyone who sang to you like this?), to the whole varied set from A. Scarlatti's "Cain" (for pure beauty, just listen to "Miei genitori, addio"), you can only increasingly admire White's unerring musical sense and command -- and of course that stunning, lovely voice.

Chamber Music from the Academy.......2001-02-17

During the 50's through the mid-80's contemporary art music became more and more estranged from its audience, especially in the United States. Were it not for the universities, where composers managed to earn their livings not through composing, but through teaching, this music might have died altogether. Curiously, though, the almost absolute removal from the mainstream made contemporary art music even more rarified. It became a sort of aesthetic Giant Panda, unable to survive except in the most protected of environments. Fortunately the times have changed and many, if not most, academic composers have for a time at least left their refuge for a stroll around the wider world. But this disc, originally released in 1987, is an artifact from that unhappy time (with the exception of the Ives, which harks back even earlier).

Six pieces are featured, and of them two pieces epitomize the rather hard-to-love uncompromising aesthetic stance of the times: the first work on the disc by Joseph Schwantner, Consortium I (an early work, written when he was 20) and the last work, Ludus II by Donald Harris. Both pieces are scored for a quintet of mixed instruments and are unrelenting in their approach. Characterized by flurries of activity alternating with moments of relative stillness, the angular polyphony yields little for the average listener in the way of melodic line and nothing of traditional harmonic motion. Mario Davidovsky's Synchronisms #3 for Cello and Tape, in an amazing performance by cellist Jay Humeston, is similarly difficult, but the timbral variety and interaction between the cello and the electronic sounds and the astonishing virtuosity of Humeston provide a richer aesthetic reward.

Schwantner's In Aeternum (Consortium IV) was composed three years after his Consortium I, and demonstrates a greater maturity and accessibility. Although much of the work is still angular, polyphonic and difficult, some contrasting passages are stunning in their beauty. This effect is achieved though unusual tone colors (especially crystal glasses and water gongs) and slower, simpler harmonic structures. Schwantner's success owes much to George Crumb, but interestingly this work predates by three years Crumb's more well-known Dream Sequence (Images II), which shares similarly remarkable timbral and harmonic ideas.

Rounding out the disc are two short pieces which allow some relief from the works mentioned above. Berio's O, King, a piece which is more well known in its orchestrated and expanded version as the third movement of his remarkable Sinfonia, is here given a rather passionless performance. Although the work includes a singer, to call it a song would be incorrect. The text of the piece is made up solely of the phonemes of Martin Luther King's name, and the singer is simply an equal to the other instrumentalists in the slow accumulation of activity and texture the piece presents. Having heard it in live performance, and having conducted it before, I know that it can be a very powerfully moving work. It seems that the Boston Musica Viva let down their guard because of its relative simplicity, and the piece suffers as a result. Charles Ives' Largo for clarinet, violin and piano is the most accessible piece on the disc, and curiously the least rewarding. Like much of Ives' music, this is more an idea of structural juxtaposition than a finely wrought work with refined details. As such it has some historical interest, and does make a significant contrast (too much so, in my opinion) with the other works on this recording; but doesn't call for repeated listening.
