Sixties bubblegum at it's best.......2002-09-15
Perhaps the best of the bubblegum groups was the 1910 fruitgum co, who's biggest hit was Simon says - it was #4 in America and #2 in Britain. I remember being a little boy in the fifties playing the game Simon says, and I remember being a teenager hearing the song Simon says played at teenage parties and everybody dancing to it.
There were several other hits in America, but not in Britain where they remain a one-hit wonder. All their American hits are here, the two biggest apart from Simon says being 1 2 3 red light and Indian giver, both of which peaked at #5. Two others (Goody goody gumdrops and Special delivery) just made the top forty, and they had two other minor hits, these being May I take a giant step into your heart and The train. The rest of this collection is made up of the best album tracks and B-sides.
Music like this is not meant to be taken seriously, but it's very catchy and great fun.

Amazon.com essential recording
For raw, pagan splendor and over-the-top excitement, it's impossible to beat Gergiev's account of the complete 1910 Firebird. His Kirov charges attack the piece as if the notes were still fresh on the page, yet play it with smashing virtuosity-- clearly, the score's exorbitant demands pose absolutely no challenge to these musicians. This is not an unrefined reading of the piece, but it is not overly refined either. It is, in short, a Russian Firebird rather than a French one. The Philips recording, made in 1995 in the Great Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, is sumptuous and amazingly potent. The coupling with Scriabin's megalomaniacal tone poem is inspired, and makes this disc impossible to resist. --Ted LibbeyAmazon.com
One seldom hears Stravinsky's original, complete, 1910 score to Diaghilev's ballet, The Firebird. Here Valery Gergiev leads the Kirov Orchestra in a muscular, well-defined rendering of the work in full. His is a decidedly controlled interpretation. Stretched out in spots to bring out clarity and significance of line, it's pushed along in others to convey urgency and melodic direction. The microphones sound very close, which only heightens the vitality of the overall texture of this interpretation. Though the group is not always precisely together and a few spots are marred by faulty intonation, the spirit and strength of conviction behind this gripping performance more than carry it off. --Gwendolyn FreedCustomer Reviews:
Maybe a bit too fussily detailed.......2005-09-19
An excellent choice.......2002-07-18
In fact, the engineering on this CD is excellent, and the complete Firebird ballet is played expertly throughout. The famous Danse Infernale is driving, and the Finale is soaring and triumphant.
However, this disc does not receive a full five stars because in my mind it lacks a certain "je ne sais quoi." I really enjoy it, but I sense Gergiev and Kirov hold back a little; I sense that they could have taken it to the next level of excitement but didn't. Don't get me wrong; this CD is great, but I just expected more. And one more thing; in the microsecond of silence just before the crescendo of the last note of Firebird, there is a small scratch on the recording. I can't determine if it came on the tape they used to record the performance or from a rustle of paper or a percussionist picking up something in the concert hall, but it just barely mars the most essential moment of the entire piece. I try to overlook it, but it's something small that stands out in a big way, sort of like a splinter or a tiny pebble stuck in your shoe.
Otherwise, this is a great disc which deserves nearly all of the kudos it receives, and I don't know of a better performance to recommend instead.
Electrifying.......2002-04-17
In terms of sheer, visceral excitement, this is hard to beat, and it is coupled with an equally breathless performance of the Scriabin "Prometheus." The final few measures, and the final chord, make as thrilling an ending as I have heard in classical music.
Incandescent!.......2001-06-26

Really great!.......2006-11-29
Actually, ALL of the discs put out by Archeophone are fantastic. They manage to find very good-sounding discs and clean them up just enough to sound good but not ruin the music. (In other words, yes, there's crackle here and there, but at least the music sounds clean and crisp instead of muffled, as can often happen with noise reduction.) Naturally the older the discs, the less clean they'll sound, but they're all quite listenable. If you're interested in more of their CD's, look them up on Amazon or go to their web site (which is the name of the company, [...]). They've got samples of every track on every one of their discs.
I have almost all of their discs, so I have this basic review up on all of them.
A must own!.......2005-05-23
Bert was a comedian of the first order. He starred in several self produced musicals and developed a distictive and natural style all his own.Rarely was there a show he was in that he could get away with not doing encore after encore whether it be a trademark song and/or routine.
He has been proclaimed one the greatest entertainers ever to grace a stage on one hand and has been vilified on the other. The former is definitely true but the latter does a great disservice to this enormously talented man.His vilification usually stems from his donning of burnt cork to "black up".These comments for the most part come from post-modern day critics both black and white who would wish to reform history in a different manner and most of which never saw their subject in the flesh.
It's easy to stand here in the 21st century and pontificate on all the "wrongs" of centuries gone by and how much more informed and advanced we are now.
The times of Bert Williams were exactly just that....... HIS times. As there are still many injustices and wrongs to be righted
in THIS century so it was in Berts' times(what will those in the 22nd century think of us?).Here was a celebrated performer of the stage but open to and indeed experienced racial predjudice that then existed amongst some of his peers and in the "real" world. It wasn't pretty and it definitely was not right but nonetheless that was a small part of the world in those years.
Also blackface as it came to be called was a norm in the Minstrel and Medicine shows of the mid to late 1800s,applied by both blacks and whites. This tradition carried over onto the Vaudeville and theartical stages of later years. In some cases it was caricatures but in others just a theatrical facade. As an aside for years critics have also ravaged Berts' contemporary Al Jolsons' trademark black face as a poster boy for caricaturizing blacks, when in reality his was for the most part just a theatricalization. This shows their ignorance in their subject matter and going for the "easy target".
What certainly can be agreed on however is that the inconsistancy in being celebrated on the one hand and being treated as a second class citizen(or worse)the next was certainly a factor in the "wearing" down of this fine and talented man.Bert spoke both publicly and privately of this dichotomy and constantly hoped against hope that somehow in America it might change. But it never did in his lifetime.
Being the consummate performer he was he was more than willing to give the people what they wanted. And his audiences both black and white wanted him in cork and would have him no other way.So ironically what made him famous also limited his artistic freedom.
To those critics who still fall into the trap of castigating whites for creating and perpetuating blackface and this Uncle Tom-ish type of characterization all I can say is that this is historical revisionism pure and simple,i.e.they don't treat their subject(s) within the constraints of their time period and they conveniently forget that blacks themselves were at times just as complicitous as whites were in stereotyping their race. There was a time when blackface was acceptable if not de rigeur but over time tastes changed and we moved past it.I only wish many would do the same now.
That is why we all should be so grateful to have these historic Archeophone recordings at our finger tips now. These songs give a new, fresh and long over due look into the career and person that was Bert Williams. For far too long many have relied on just old songsheets, posters, pictures and the very few extant recordings that surfaced periodically amongst mainly hard core collectors that gave a very myopic view of his career. Now the world can reassess and see him through much clearer glasses than ever before and we all can revel in the burdgeoning talent and man that was indeed one of the major talents ever to grace a stage anywhere at any time.
More Great Stuff from the Grandfather of Black Comedy.......2003-04-05
Of course, some of this stuff is just plain timeless fun. "You Can't Get Away From It" is a delightfully catchy ragtime tune that you will often find singing to yourself from time to time. "Woodman Spare that Tree" is a comic tale of a man who escapes from his nagging wife in a tree in the front yard. Some really interesting sides include two 1913 monologues from Bert's stage act, "When Martin Comes" and "How? Fried?" (Bert's manic laugh at the end of the latter is worth the price of admission alone). Both of these bear interesting similarities to Bill Cosby's comic tales of a half-century later.
Aside form the surface noise that may annoy audiophiles, this is a happy case of historically important material that still posesses strong entertainment value. Buy this, and be thanful that Bert lived long enough to have some of his great material preserved for all time.

In telling the story of Gustav Mahler's socially tempestuous wife and fellow composer-songwriter Alma, director Bruce Beresford faced great challenges. But they would seem to pale in comparison to the task of composer Stephen Endelman, who was variously asked to highlight Alma's largely unfamiliar songs, economically echo Mahler's most sweeping works, and compose an original score that meshed seamlessly with the Mahlers' music. Though purists may grumble somewhat, Endelman has largely succeeded here, capturing the rich drama and emotion at the heart of both Mahlers' disparate music while compacting it to fit the medium's constraints. Soprano Renée Fleming voices Alma's "Bei Ist Es Traut" and "Laau Sommernacht" in new recordings with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as well as Gustav's "Ruckert Lied No. 5" backed by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Edited catalog Vienna Symphony performances of Gustav's Symphony no. 3 conducted by Claudio Abbado and Symphonies nos. 5 and 6 by Pierre Boulez are also featured, along with the feverish violin music of Gypsy musical savant Janos Bihari, performed here by Roby Lakatos and Ensemble. Endelman's underscore is used sparingly, forging measured emotional links betwixt the Mahlers' own stormy compositions. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

* ABSOLUTELY KILLER TROPICAL GROOVES *.......2006-07-08
Included here we have some skanky, funky uptempo stuff coupled with some preternaturally mellow island vibes. All of it is tied together by the soul/funk/jazz mixture which these musicians infused with the skanky rhythms dominant in Jamaica at the time. It is remarkable how permanently hip this stuff has managed to sound. Vin Gordon, Lester Sterling, Cedric Brooks, Bobby Ellis, Rico Rodruigez, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, and a ton of others make glowing contributions to the proceedings, superb even by their own high stardards. Lodged in with these instrumental tracks is a great vocal tune, Johnny Osbourne's "The Warrior," the funky beat and soulful horn lines of which make it fit right in. A good vocal soul tune and two R&B/soul instrumentals round out the set, but they are not especially of a piece with the heart of this CD, and are best enjoyed separately, as are the surprisingly sophisticated bop sides which begin the disc. As is to be expected with Trojan, some pretty rare tunes mingle with some not so rare ones; more seasoned collectors will have to make their own determinations in this regard. Note, however, that there is sure sound improvement from previous releases. For instance, the tune "James Ray" is massively improved over the version on "Trojan Instrumentals Box Set." The liner notes are very good, and the artwork is quite beautiful. Best of all, Trojan has actually included the DATES OF RECORDINGS, something basic which, sadly, is missing from even premium-priced releases of this sort.
Jazzy, breezy, and at times near-psychedelic, I've found that this disc is something that I can listen to over and over without ever tiring of, and I find it especially bliss-inducing as a summer soundtrack. Listen to tracks five thru twenty as one album, and you will have a glorious, cohesive, and really invigorating aural experience. For fans of instrumental Jamaican music, this is a phenominal set to file right next to Heartbeat's "Downbeat The Ruler," Soul Jazz's "Studio One Scorcher" (volumes 1 & 2), Universal Sounds' "Jackie Mittoo:Keyboard King At Studio One, and the "Trojan Instrumentals" box set.

Great performances of not-so-great music.......2005-07-01
The prime interest in Alma Mahler is her fascinating life, entwined as it was with Gustav Mahler; Zemlinsky; Kokoschka; Walter Gropius et al. Some mystery is created by the story of Gustav's conditioning their marriage on her ceasing to compose. But was it really any great loss?
These sixteen songs (all that survive of her compositions) are full of stock late-romantic gestures showing Zemlinksy's influence but none of his insight. Her understanding of many of the poems is questionable, as she sails past key moments with little inspiration and lingers in unimportant byways.
Full credit to Panula, who provided the orchestral arrangements and sensitively conducted the Tampere Philharmonic; and Paasikivi, a delightful mezzo; who present these curiosities in the best possible light. Such ideal performances are better than the music deserves. Three stars: an average of five for the performance and one for the music.

The performers have a deep understanding of what the music means and they do a fine job carrying it out to the listeners. The alto saxophone has a very rich smooth sound which is in contrast to the harp. I've played "In Trutina" from Carmina Burana and this is one of the best recordings of it that I've heard so far.
I hope the artists continue to collaborate in the future! What a fine ensemble, and beautiful music to listen to!
