Avenue Q will only fuel the frustration of those who think that Broadway has given up on sophisticated entertainment geared to adults. "Whatever happened to Cole Porter's witty rhymes and mature subject matter?" they'll say. Well, it's hard to deny that Avenue Q's main frame of reference is Sesame Street and that its humor can be very broad--yes, there's profanity and puppet sex. But the show also displays heart ("The More You Ruv Someone" typically begins with "Why can't people get along?") and a pretty satisfying zany streak. Musically, the score is rooted in 1970s pop, with nods to the aforementioned Sesame Street. The excellent cast, dominated by John Tartaglia and Stephanie D'Abruzzo, does it justice, milking the humorous numbers for all they're worth and finding pathos in the more straightforward ones. I knew what I was walking into when I ordered my tickets for Avenue Q in April 07, since I read several reviews. And it is truly one of the funniest musicals I've ever seen. The harmless and classical tunes belie the racy and politically incurrent, but honest lyrics. I can't remember the last time I sat in a theater with almost everyone rolling in the seats. The only people not rolling apparently were not aware of the content and were shocked.
That's why I bought the soundtrack. Listening to it makes me laugh all over again.
Don't see/hear this Production..........2007-05-31
If this CD is anything like the production we saw in Las Vegas, forget it! Unless you want to be preached to, that is, and by muppet-like characters to boot. You wouldn't expect anything but the best performance in Vegas; the tip off should have been that we were able to buy tickets within the hour--not a good sign. We left at intermission. /sl

Don't make the mistake that I did and send this CD to a high-school grad. However this CD would be great for anyone after the first year of college.
Don't send it to a relative though. Embarrassing.

Saw Avenue Q in New York in a few months ago. Having the CD lets you relive the experience.

Those intimately familiar with this wonderful show will no doubt enjoy this disc. Unfortunately, with no rehearsal tracks, it can be difficult to get the "timing" of the spoken dialogue down, even with the guiding text. Nice unofficial souvenir of the show.
Great Musical Great Karaoke.......2006-06-20
This CD rocks! I love Avenue Q and the karaoke is lots of fun. All of the accompaniment sounds really good, almost exactly like the cast recording, you can tell its synthisized, but just barely. I would highly recomend this to anyone who loves Avenue Q

Sesame Street meets "The Graduate" meets Jon Stewart. Avenue Q deserves the awards it has won--it is a brilliant, hilarious,sophisticated, insightful romp that is wise yet cunningly self-deprecating. It is, however, not for those who can't get past the spot on use of XXX language in service of one of the best--and most timely-- comedic masterpieces to hit Broadway in years.

avenue q is so wrong in every way that you can't help but sing along with it, and now that there's a karaoke version, i'm the star! :-P the tracks are obviously synthesized but the quality rocks and sounds very much like the original cast recording. they've even recorded the sound effects and underscoring for the script in betweeen verses so you can perform the entire song without having to skip over dialogue. the only problem is that amazon doesn't carry this for some reason, so i went to another site to find it but i guarentee it is the same item. Fun and Refreshing.......2006-03-05
I purchased this CD on a whim, and I was absolutely shocked when I got to track #4- "Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel," by the cast of "Hairspray." I loved the upbeat humor, and as the song progressed, I realized I'd heard this version before- it was on South Park! I could not BELIEVE what I was hearing, but I completely adored it. As I listened through the rest of the 2-CD set, I concluded it would undoubtedly be one of my favorite holiday albums. It was a wonderful combination of traditional renditions, such as a beautiful "O Holy Night" performed by the cast of "Rent" and new, humorous songs, including "Too Fat to Fit" by the cast of "The Producers" which was had a personality reminiscent of "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," "Angelo Rosenbaum," sung by Thom Christopher Warren of "Lion King," and "Sing Out" by the cast of "Gypsy."
Overall, the CD set was a wonderful surprise; I had expected a 2 CD set filled with well-sung music, but I was rewarded with a compilation as diverse as peoples' view of the holidays, ranging from the somber expression of religious value to the whimsical, with a jab at the commercial attitude in the middle!
