Hairspray (2002 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters's 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It's wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that's in keeping with the story's setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa Jaret Winokur's (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in "Good Morning Baltimore" to the stunningly upbeat finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." The music is by Marc Shaiman, whose recent projects include South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, as well as a number of film soundtracks, and his compositions are simultaneously solid and exuberant. Shaiman and Scott Wittman's lyrics brim over with the unreserved passions and primary-color emotions that made the film so successful. Regardless of one's familiarity with the story or the stage production, it's hard to avoid the appeal of this recording; even the less cheerful songs are awash in bright colors, without disrespect for their subjects. --Genevieve Williams

What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). The show's authors, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, have written three new numbers for the movie: the rollicking (and first single) "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl in Town" and "Come So Far." In addition, the CD also includes two tracks that aren't in the film but were in the show: "Cooties," sung by Aimee Allen, and "Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now," sung by all three Tracy Turnblads: Blonsky, Ricki Lake (from the source movie) and Marissa Jaret Winokur (from the original Broadway cast). --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

The Hairspray soundtrack will feature 17 songs from the film, including three original numbers that were created specifically for the film version of the hit Broadway musical - "Ladies' Choice," "New Girl In Town," and "Come So Far." Also featured on the soundtrack are the songs "Good Morning Baltimore," "Welcome to the `60s," "Nicest Kids In Town," and "You Can't Stop The Beat." The songs are performed by cast members John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Amanda Bynes, Brittany Snow and Elijah Kelley among others.

The Hairspray soundtrack is produced by Marc Shaiman and features music by Shaiman and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman. It features tracks mixed by Ed Cherney (Rolling Stones, Bette Midler) and Peter Mokran (Pussycat Dolls, Christina Aguilera).

Sixteen years after the release of the original film, New Line Cinema is bringing a feature film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning Broadway production of Hairspray to life. Featuring new and original material based on John Waters' 1988 cult classic about star-struck teenagers on a local Baltimore dance show, the comedy features a remarkable collection of talent including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago), and director Adam Shankman (Bringing Down The House). The new screenplay for Hairspray was written by Leslie Dixon (Freaky Friday, Outrageous Fortune).

4 out of 5 stars Fantabulous!.......2007-07-17

Another exceptional soundtrack comes yet again. DREAMGIRLS has honestly been my favorite of 2007, but HAIRSPRAY gives it a semi-run for its money. Sure, there is no powerhouse performance quite like Jennifer Hudson's Academy Award winning clinching performance of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" or a soul-wrencher like Beyonce's lovely "Listen", but there are a slew of enjoyable, credible vocal performance.

In this instance, I feel there is no need to scan the entire track list. There are tracks that are much more enjoyable than others. Along with that, there are vocal performances that are bland and those that are killer. Not to degrade anybody, but performances by Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeifer, and Travolta aren't nearly as invigorating as electrifiying performances by Queen Latifah (who sound's extraordinary), the ever maturing Zac Efron (the boy's got some pipes) and even newcomer Nikki Blonsky. James Mardsen isn't bad, but he doesn't have the same vocal power as Queen or the shockingly good Efron. I'll admit it, the kid has talent, even if I'm sick of seeing him on the cover of every tween, teen, and kiddy-pop magazine (not that I read them!!!)

"Good Morning Baltimore" is a strong opener by Blonsky while Efron's "It Takes Two" is simply beautiful, particularly with his lovely, in tune falsetto C# at the end. "Ladies' Choice" is energized while Queen Latifah sounds even sassier than she did in CHICAGO with the great "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful". She lends her vocals to my personal favorite of the soundtrack, the gospel-jazz tinged "I Know Where I've Been", perhaps the best vocal of the entire album. "Without Love" is another track featuring strong vocals by Efron (the show-stealer clearly on this track), while Marsden lends some sensational vocals on "It's Hairspray". Perhaps the unchallenged theme of HAIRSPRAY is the ambitious, ensemble performance "You Can't Stop The Beat", which is indeed excellent. "Mama, I'm A Big Girl" isn't my favorite of favorites, but it is fun as well, particularly with the added plug for Ricki ("go Ricki, go Ricki"). Tracks such as "The Legend of Ms. Baltimore Crabs" or "You're Timeless To Me" fall flat, which I couldn't really say about DREAMGIRLS soundtrack. All in all though, I think this is a fantastic listen and I am definitely a softy for musicals. Go Zac & Queen!!! 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Love the Broadway Cast recording? Give this a second chance..........2007-07-14

When I first put in this CD and heard "Good Morning Baltimore", I was utterly disappointed. In fact, by the end of the first run-through I was almost prepared to write-off the movie. Almost.

If, like me, you're a fan of the stage production and the Broadway Cast recording, then you have to remember -- like I came to -- that this is the soundtrack to a movie (re-)adaptation.

You might, initially, be annoyed by the changes in the lyrics of certain songs, the addition of certain songs, the removal of "The Big Dollhouse", and the change in the order of songs. I still trying to get the putting of "Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now" at the end (since it was early on in the stage production)!

I think the movie is going to be great. But you can't compare the stage production and the movie directly -- it's really not fair, because they're entirely different mediums, and perhaps, more or less, aimed at different audiences (i.e., the movie is more for the masses).

You might need to listen to the CD a couple of times before you get into it. I'm on my third go-round now, and it's growing on me with every go (except for the song "Cooties"!).

5 out of 5 stars Two Tons of Fun!.......2007-07-14

I thought "You Can't Stop the Beat" in the movie trailer sounded a bit lifeless but WOW! The soundtrack's ensemble sounds fantastic!
They POP! Tons of energy!
The chorus of "Beat" positively explodes at the end.

The new and augmented arrangements are dazzling also! Overall the soundtrack has much fuller sound over the original cast recording."Good Morning Baltimore" opens the cd, sounding much like "Be My Baby" with a big Phil Spector Wall of Sound...it just jumps out at'cha

Nicki Blonsky is a little less vocally demonstrative than the Broadway's Tracy, Marisa Winokur, but has a bright, appealing voice minus Winokur's more nasal quality.Michelle Pfeiffer's vocals doesn't match original cast member Linda Hart's growly belt but she has an interesting vibrato filled punch on her more sustained notes. Queen Latifah is not as dynamic or as powerful as Mary Bond Davis on the original but she sounds sassy on "Big, Blonde and Beautiful" and gives a understated performance on "I know Where I've Been". Travolta's renditions are lacking personality but he redeems himself on "Timeless to Me"

I don't know that this recording replaces the OBC (it doesn't feel quite as coherent or like a total experience) but it is very upbeat. The new songs are okay and totally fit in the style of the show. The score is reminiscent of 60s pop with lots of musical and vocal references to 60s hits (everything from "Wipe Out" to "Shout"),including an instrumental nod to "La Vie En Rose" during the charming Travolta/Walken "Timeless" duet.

My first listen gave me the same exultation and high I felt walking out of the theater after first seeing the show on Broadway!

2 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED.......2007-07-13

Having just purchasesd and listened to the Hairspray soundtrack, I was very disappointed about how flat it all sounds? While the broadway show and the movie should be judged as two separate entities (due to casting), I enjoyed the broadway soundtrack because there was a sense of joy, enthusiasm and fun in the voices of the cast. This cast, however, only seems to be "singing" the songs, but the feeling just isnt there. While everyone is praising Queen Latifah, I found her renditions just lacking any emotion. Dont get me started on John Travolta...and Amanda Bynes? Michelle Pfeifers version is just too droll....but Zac Efron does a very good job of bringing his songs to life. If this is any indication of the movie, I might be avoiding it.

2 out of 5 stars WEAK!.......2007-07-13

This is weak compared to the original broadway sdtk! I'm a huge Hairspray fan...There is a definate lack of energy on the movie sdtk...I hope the movie doesn't turn the same fate.

5 out of 5 stars My New Obsession.......2007-02-07

I've been lingering over this CD for the past few weeks and finally decided to buy it and so happy I did so. This is all I've been listening to for the past few days.

From the great opener 'Good Morning Baltimore' to the best closing song I've ever heard, 'You Can't Stop the Beat', this recording is a gem.

One of my favorite songs on this soundtrack is 'The Nicest Kids in Town'. It has that kind of beat that's hard to not dance to. Another favorite is 'Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now'. It reminds me of the songs of Leslie Gore. My favorite line comes from Amber von Tussle "Once upon a time I used to dress up Ken/but now that I'm a woman I like bigger men/And I don't need a Barbie doll to show me how".

'(The Legend of)Miss Baltimore Crabs' is a glorious song for the villain. With wonderful drumming and violins in the background, Velma von Tussel has a great solo song.

'It Takes Two' is such a great slow song. I can just imagine a 1960's prom. Everyone slow dancing and the lights low. A band set up on the stage. I can't help sing along.

'Welcome to the 60's' is another wonderful song. It seems to be everyone's favorite. It's one of mine too. Harvey Fierstein is great as Edna.

'Big, Blonde, & Beautiful' is another good song. A good message to all big girls to be proud of yourself. Ignore what everyone says about you and strut. "Bring on that pecan pie/pour some sugar on it/Sugar don't be shy"

'(You're) Timeless to Me' is such a cute song between Wilbur and Edna.

'Without Love' is my number one favorite on this recording. Link proclaiming his love to Tracy who's locked up in solitary confinement and Seaweed proclaiming his love to Penny who's tied up on her bed. "Darling I'll be yours forever/'cause I never wanna be/Without love/so darling throw away the key"

'I Know Where I've Been' is a glorious gospel song. Sung by Motormouth Maybelle about her experiences and having learned from them.

'Cooties' is such a childish sounding song but it's the kind of song that should have it's own dance. It's too much fun.

The little song that follows 'You Can't Stop the Beat' is so funny and dark. I don't know the name, I just refer to as 'Blood on the Pavement'. "Don't drink and drive/please keep your head/Or come graduation day/you'll be dead".

I recommend this soundtrack to everyone. It's the kind of soundtrack that doesn't sound like a musical soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Hairspray CD.......2007-01-14

If you loved the Broadway, you'll love this cd. A friend heard me playing the cd and asked what radio station I was listening to so he could tune in.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Stop the Beat!.......2006-11-30

I could try to come up with a more clever title for this review, but the title of the last track says it all about the soundtrack from the Broadway show Hairspray. I went reluctantly ($110 per ticket) on my last trip to NYC, and found to my surprise that I enjoyed the show and then adored the soundtrack--every number is performed with great gusto and excitement. "Good Morning Baltimore", sung by Marissa Winokur as Tracy Turnblad, the portly dance-crazed teen from 1963 Baltimore, gets the show off to a great start. "The Nicest Kids in Town" takes you back to the days of American Bandstand and its local knockoffs. "The Bells" was one I knew before seeing the show as my daughter and her friends sang (or at least lip synched) it at a drama camp talent show. "It Takes Two", a teen idol number sung by the character Link, sounds much better to me that the real Frankie Avalon/Ricky Nelson tunes of the early '60s that are its models. Other great songs, many with a civil rights theme following from the story of the film, follow, topped off by "Cooties"--an insult song sung by Tracy's rival Amber Von Tussle, and the showstopping (literally) finale "You Can't Stop the Beat", which sounds more urgent with every listen. Along the way the songwriters include some clever and slightly subversive lyrics--Tracy sings about the "rats on the street" who "all dance round my feet"; Linc croons that "Liz, she has her Dick"; and Penny Pingleton is ready to "call the NAACP" if anyone challenges her love for her African-American boyfriend Seaweed. Some have said that Hairspray is the Grease of the 21st century, but to me it's much better-more human; and also significantly better than the '80s comedy film on which the musical was based. We await with excitement and trepidation the film musical, which could hardly improve on the stage show, but in any event we'll get to hear those great songs again.

5 out of 5 stars At last, oldies but goodies you're not sick of the second time around..........2007-01-26

The movie Hairspray by John Waters boasts a score so good it's almost criminal! This CD contains twelve great songs that deserve much more attention than they ever received; and just one listen proves it.

The great songs on this CD include Toussaint McCall's heartrending ballad "Nothing Takes The Place Of You." Toussaint McCall sings this beautifully and the musical arrangement enhances the beauty of this number. Jan Bradley performs "Mama Didn't Lie" which is another excellent song. Jan sings about protecting her heart from boys who don't want to give her true love. "Foot Stompin'" boasts an infectious beat by The Flares as they sing about dancing to what was once known as "race" music. Excellent!

"You'll Lose A Good Thing" is a very romantic ballad by Barbara Lynn. In this song Barbara reminds her man to treat her well.

One of very favorite numbers on this album is Gene Pitney's "Town Without Pity." Gene delivers this song very well; his voice is strong and energetic. The musical arrangement will stun you, too. Another excellent song is "The Madison Time" by The Ray Bryant Combo. "The Madison Time" is essentially a great instrumental number with a man telling dancers on the dance floor which steps to take. The arrangement is slick, $exy and very catchy, too.

Despite the fact that this CD boasts a fine collection of obscure oldies, the song "Hairspray" was written for the 1988 movie. "Hairspray" represents camp at its best and you will enjoy this number even if it isn't an oldie.

Other great songs on this CD include "I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song);" "Shake A Tail Feather" and "The Roach (Dance)."

Some reviewers write that they wish that this CD included more music from the motion picture soundtrack. They are right. I considered making this a four star review for that reason but I concluded that the strength of this CD as it stands merits a five star review. The songs here are just so good I said "Aw, heck" to myself and so I gave it five stars anyway.

The liner notes give the songs credits and John Waters adds a brief essay about the songs on this CD. The graphics are excellent.

Overall, this CD offers a rare opportunity to hear many obscure but wonderful oldies that deserve more play time than they ever will receive. The quality of the sound is excellent even on my portable CD player. Fans of the oldies or movie soundtracks will love this album. May you enjoy this album as much as I have!

4 out of 5 stars Best Song Missing.......2006-10-12

The reason this only gets 4*'s is because it's without the Bunker Hill tune, "Hide And Go Seek (Part 1)".

When the LP was first released, I picked up a copy and was also disappointed not to find the remaining songs from the movie.
For years I had been collecting the songs that brought my best memories
of my youth. Here was a chance to add a few of the rarer ones.

Since then, I've been able to complete my own collection of the tunes of Hairspray. And yes, "Hide And Go Seek" was my number one priority.

I found it on 2 different CD's. "The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll Vol. 6" on Ace and the ultra-rare, "Do You Remember? 30 Original Golden Oldies" on Mr. Maestro.

Luckily, though, "The Roach", "Footstompin'", "Mama Didn't Lie" and "Nothing Takes The Place Of You" are included in the Hairspray LP/CD, which are very much repsonsible for its 4* rating.

The only so-called weak tunes on this recording are the title track, "Hairspray" and "I Wish I Were A Princess".

4 out of 5 stars where you can find the other 8 songs missing from cd.......2006-05-31

You can find the other 8 songs not on the cd at "Nina's discount records in New Jersey. I did.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the rest?.......2006-04-27

I'd buy this CD in a second if it included all of the songs from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH WATERS MARK.......2005-12-23

HAIRSPRAY-ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK: From outrageous cult director John Waters' most accessible comedy (starring none other than Ricki Lake, Divine, Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry, and Jerry Stiller!), the audio companion to HAIRSPRAY is every bit as much grand, giddy fun as the fabulous flick, thanks to tastefully obscure song selections from the pre-Fab Four era of 60s pop and RNB. Gene Pitney's dramatic TOWN WITHOUT PITY and Barbara Lynn's YOU'LL LOSE A GOOD THING aside, near-forgotten classics such as Ray Bryant's swinging dance instruction tune THE MADISON TIME, the Five Du-Tones' funky frenzy SHAKE A TAIL FEATHER, and Little Peggy March's bubblegum lipsmacker I WISH I WERE A PRINCESS are crafty, blessedly abstract choices. Throw in the Ikettes' (Ike and Tina's backup singers) soul-saturated I'M BLUE (THE GONG GONG SONG), Brenda Lee-wannabe Rachel Sweet's kitschy title number, and not one, but TWO insect ditties (THE ROACH and THE BUG), and you've got a soundtrack that's pure dance nirvana. So tease yourself with HAIRSPRAY today! RATING: FIVE RAT TAIL COMBS

A companion to the fabulous PBS series, the 21-song, 77-minute The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" provides about as good a single-disc compilation as anyone could hope for. (There's also a five-CD version.) What sets it apart from so many other "best of Broadway" collections is its breadth--because it had access to a variety of record-label vaults it doesn't have to try to disguise gaps by using revivals or solo recordings. Here you get all the authentic stuff, including: Paul Robeson singing "Ol' Man River" from the first modern American musical, Show Boat; Ethel Merman singing "You're the Top"; the title song from Oklahoma!; Julie Andrews singing "I Could Have Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady; West Side Story's "America"; Betty Buckley singing "Memory" from Cats; Hairspray's "Good Morning Baltimore"; and "Defying Gravity" from Wicked, the newest show discussed in the PBS series. And it's hard to argue with the songwriters represented: Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Frank Loesser, Lerner and Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Bock and Harnick, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among others. Obviously, no single-disc compilation could ever please everyone (did we really need two ALW songs?), but as a sampler intended for people who watched the series and want to hear more of the Great White Way, The Best of "Broadway: The American Musical" can't be topped. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting choices, indeed.......2006-03-02

This is a pretty good compilation, but I have to wonder at some of the choices that went into it.
"Good Morning Baltimore" is almost the least impressive song from Hairspray. "You Can't Stop the Beat" was a much more anthemic song from that show.
I agree that it's too bad Les Mis didn't make it in. I would have traded that for anything Sondheim, although that's a personal preference :) .
Still, the opportunity to hear the original performers and orchestras perform these works, all in one place, is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-11-01

This one plays in the car, on the ipod and in the house. When the kids were little they would ask if we could take them to "The Street". That is what they called Broadway (little did they know at that time how famous that street is). They still love it and we can not get enough of it. This CD covers the best and makes you want to go and see a live performance. You can not beat that.

4 out of 5 stars Great selections, but bad transfers.......2005-07-27

This is a great taste of broadway. If you enjoyed the B'Way series at all, then you will probably enjoy this CD. My problem with it is that some of the songs sound like they were not remastered at all- the transfer to CD is terrible. The orchestrations in "You're the top" by Ethel Merman are muffled, and the song sounds like it was taken straight from an old record and slapped onto the CD without fixing it up. It doesn't sound very clear, which is a bit upsetting and annoying. Maybe this is just because that particular recording is older than some of the songs chosen to be on this CD. The more modern songs sound crisp and new and beautiful. "Swanee" is also very low quality as if it were just taken off of a record and put on the CD without any restoration. I just feel that these songs deserved better treatment and that we as customers deserve better treatment. Decca could have restored these songs and made them sound really good, but they decided just to slap them on the CD without touching them up.

I am surprised that nothing was chosen to be on this recording from Les Miserables since it had been on Broadway for 16 years and its tour is running until 2006. There were selections from Cats, Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, so I am not sure why nothing was chosen from Les Miserables.

Other than these few nit pickings, I think that this is a great introduction to musicals. It gives a little taste across the spectrum. Try getting the cast recordings of the songs that you really like on this collection. It's worth buying if you're a huge broadway fan.

5 out of 5 stars Yes this is Some of the Best of Broadway!.......2005-04-08

This CD from Decca Broadway is a wonderful selection of some of

the "Greatest Hits" of the Broadway stage. Decca and Sony have

done an excellent job of remastering the various recordings, some

of which still show some of their age, but come across quite

well. Are there a lot of songs that I would have put on this

disc? Yes, but the ones on here are good choices. I may have to

get a copy of the Five disc set and the DVD's just to see if any

more of my favorites made it on the list. What this disc seems to

try to do is show the evolution of the Broadway song from it's

early days to the present. It succeeds quite well I think.

If you enjoy Broadway theater this CD is a must!

5 out of 5 stars The music of Broadway comes alive.......2004-10-07

I loved listening to this CD. The music from Broadway's best loved musicals are on this album. I recogized most of these songs, even though I've only seen a few of them on the local stage. I have so many favorites on this CD. It is hard to pick one. I'm a big fan of Barbara Streisand. I loved her performance of People from Funny Girl. Memory is the hit song from the musical Cats. Betty Buckley's performance of this song is so emotional and sincere.

I loved the song Annie. It is a wonderfully optimistic song performed by the original Annie Andrea McArdle. Another highlight for me is the song One performed by the cast of a Chorus Line. Luck Be A Lady Tonight is another of my favorite broadway songs on this CD from Guys and Dolls. The music of the night is a beautiful song by Michael Crawford from Phantom of the Opera. Richard Kiley has such a strong and powerful voice. He sounds so inspirational singing The Impossible Dream from Man from La Mancha. My dream is to see some musicals on Broadway someday and listen to these songs performed live.

I'm surprised that there isn't any music from Miss Saigon or Jesus Christ Superstar included here. I think they are classic musicals with great songs Maybe they will appear on a future compilation from PBS.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great for Singing Along!.......2007-02-19

My kids take voice lessons. They enjoy being able to sing with the singer and then doing it on their own. Good selection of songs.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not stellar........2005-08-03

I bought this CD to use as a backup for a pageant performance and I'm pretty pleased with it. The songs are in the correct keys and sound pretty darn close to the originals. There aren't any guide vocals which I found to be a blessing; no more listening to some half-rate singer faintly chortling along in the background! There are a few parts (mainly the big orchestra solos) where you can tell that a synthesizer was used versus a real band, but these parts are pretty sparse. The only draw-back to this CD is that there are absolutely no backup vocals so the big finales and chorus sections don't pack the oomph that they do in the live performances. Overall, however, I would recommend this CD for local performances, pageantry, or just for some good karaoke time.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-01-03

I love it, and what I especially LIKE is that there is NO background-chorus. If the Dutch version of the show starts next season we can sing along with the Dutch lyrics, without a English chorus.
Great!!

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love The Cheesey-Ness.......2004-10-05

This CD is great! The background tracks are quite close to the actual orchestrations and are fun to dance around to (in regards to Hairspray) and great to sing along with (in regards to both musicals). Both musicals are a little cheesey and fun by themselves, but this CD makes me appreciate them even more. I love Hairspray especially, but all songs in both musicals on this CD are at the right tempos and in the right keys. Great to perform to if you're a serious performer or just a fun-loving karaoke singer. The ONLY fault with the cd is there are NO back-up vocals on ANY of the tracks, so the ensemble numbers are a bit...quiet. Not as dynamic for a solo voice, but all-in-all a wonderful cd and a must for any musical theatre performer. 4 Stars!

This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

If you are a broadway passer-by, someone who looks to getting to know just what's on broadway and not what's it like, someone who says he's seen all of the broadway shows after reading the "what's on listings" in the papers this is a CD for you. I don't own the CD but own all of the Cds from which songs were taken to make this CD. every musical has it's own style and kind of music, and this CD doesn't even take all the highlights. If you are into really experiencing something when listening to a cd, if you are a real broadway-lover and you are interested in modern musical-writing, every one of the original cast recordings (from which songs were taken to this CD-hairpsray, producers, millie, aida, b&b, boheme, moving out) will be a much bigger enjoyment for you than this one. and most preferabely- all of them! :)
