Mary Poppins [Enhanced] [Soundtrack] [Special Edition]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Winner of five Oscars (including two for Richard and Robert Sherman's memorable slate of songs), Disney's 1964 adaptation of British author P.L. Travers' beloved children's tales melded live action, animation and music more successfully than any film before or since. Containing the most complete version of the Sherman Brothers' score and a wealth of previously unavailable behind-the-scenes treasures, this double-disc, 40th anniversary soundtrack edition becomes the ultimate musical tribute to the beloved family masterpiece. The Sherman's memorable songs are showcased here in a more comprehensive musical context than ever before; indeed, a number of the expanded or previously unreleased pieces of the Irwin Kostal-arranged underscore now included were truncated in editing the film itself. The generous bonus disc contains the set's greatest historical treasure: a 40+ minute pre-production story meeting between the Shermans, gag writer Don DaGradi and author Travers herself. Also included is a lengthy 1964 audio documentary featuring the Shermans and stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, an audio montage of the songwriting team reminiscing and playing their original demos for the project and an illustrated 40-page companion booklet containing a history of the project as well as complete song lyrics. -- Jerry McCulley

Mary Poppins may be one of the most beloved film musicals of all time, but it took 30 long years for it to transfer to the stage. This recording of the original London cast shows the wait was worthwhile though. The new version mixes in elements from both the original books by P.L. Travers (which she started publishing in 1934) and the Disney movie starring Julie Andrews, from 1964. (Mary seems to take 30 years to do anything.) Most of the original songs by brothers Richard and Robert Sherman (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) are present--Mary Poppins is so associated with "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "A Spoonful of Sugar," and "Chim Chim Cher-ee," her Oscar-winning duet with Bert, that starting from scratch would have been unthinkable. But then George Stiles and Anthony Drewe came in and dusted off some of these songs, and wrote entirely new numbers as well. Miraculous, these are wonderful and blend in seamlessly with the 1960s tunes, thanks in no small to William David Brohn's lovely orchestrations. As the titular super-nanny, Laura Michelle Kelly is so warm and scrumptious that she might as well be referring to herself when she sings "I'm practically perfect in every way." The rest of the cast is equally adept, making this Mary Poppins sweet but not treacly, and the rare show to upstage its source. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Great Memories.......2007-07-13
Good music ... great memories of when I was younger. Julie Andrew is missed.
Horrible show!.......2007-06-17
I saw it in London, and there are literally only 2 good things about it: Burt walking upside down, and a few new (darker) additions from the original book.
Nearly all the original charm and SONGS from the Walt Disney film are missing. The new additional songs are DREADFUL and were not written by the Sherman Brothers (They weren't allowed to write new songs for this due to the miserable old broad author hating the film and having on her deathbed the proviso that Shermans were not to have anything to do with a stage version)
What a waste.
The return of Mary Poppins.......2007-04-12
Different from the movie, this version develops the characters somewhat more deeply. I especially like the depth of personality shown in Mrs. Banks.
Loved it, loved it........2007-03-09
Like just about every other little girl who was alive in the sixties, Mary Poppins was a favorite. I had heard about the new play from a friend in New York who had just seen it and loved it, and so I got this sound track. I have it on my Ipod and listen to it all the time. My grown daughters love it also. It is a great addition to my CD collection.
Great Music!.......2007-02-14
The Broadway version is even better than the movie version! Definitely buy this CD.

Customer Reviews:
Practically Perfect..........2007-06-20
A really wonderful re-issue of this classic score, made even richer by the inclusion of much of the orchestral score. My only quibble, rather small, is that the expanded overture heard on the original lp has not been included. That overture goes on a little longer than the film version and is quite beautiful. Has this version been on any cd issue of the soundtrack? As I said, small point, and this cd belongs in every soundtrack collection - it's just great - and far better than the current stage version.
A Classic.......2007-05-13
This CD is not of the caliber of a Sound of Music and West Side Story as far sheer volume of great songs go; most songs are good and classics.
This CD is one to have in your collection of musicals.
Loved by young and old...I mean older :) .......2007-03-15
My son and mother-in-law love to sing to the music, so we bought this for her birthday to replace the record (album) that she has been using. Yes, I did say record! It really is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!
What a soundtrack!.......2006-11-10
I wish I would have gotten this a long time ago. I never knew soundtracks could be so much fun! My whole family enjoys singing along with these songs and visioning the movie while we sing. Even my husband enjoys singing Chim Chim Cher-ee! The price is amazing to boot.
Perfectly pleased.
Mary Poppins Soundtrack is supercalifriglisticexpialidocious.......2006-11-10
The CD expansion of the score from the original vinyl is delightful and a must for any soundtrack collection.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07
Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Great Fun.......2007-01-19
I got this for my girls for Christmas and we have had such a good time singing all the songs. We have even brought it in the car so they can sing along there too. The one negative thing is that my girls wished it had the nanny song sung by the kids in the movie. It still has been worth every penny spent.
Original background score after all these years!.......2004-10-16
Mary Poppins has been my favorite movie since I first saw it in 1973. The wonderful music of Disney inspired me to enter a music career. I've greatly enjoyed the restoration of these great movies and their music over the past ten years or so. I throughly enjoy the complete score-only feature of "The Sound of Music" dvd and this is the Disney equivalent. There's no end to the thrill of hearing this wonderful original score, arranded and conducted by Irwin Costal, in it's digitally restored brilliance. This makes me anxiously await the two disc soundtrack to be released for the film's 40th anniversary. Three cheers to the producers and to Disney for giving this original music the attention it deserves.

If not for all the other highlights of Walt Disney's incomparable pop cultural legacy, it would be tempting to call Mary Poppins his crowning achievement. Released just two years before his death, the innovative live-action/animation/musical hybrid became an instant classic. It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and a winner of 5 (including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Musical Score and Best Song Oscars for the brother team of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman). It's no stretch to call the Mary Poppins score the Shermans' most memorable of their 40-plus-year association with Disney. Boasting at least three bona fide classics ("A Spoonful of Sugar"; the Gilbert and Sullivan-esque romp, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"; and Oscar winner, "Chim Chim Cher-ee") and at least as many other contenders, the Shermans' score held the technical tour de force together while giving it a sense of ageless wonder to match the powers of its titular magical nanny. This edition restores the previously abridged "Step in Time" sequence to its original length and offers a terrific 16-minute bonus track for collectors: the Sherman brothers' reminiscences about their work on the landmark film interspersed with four of their original song demos. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Mary Poppins - the anarchist mentor :) .......2006-04-03
From the internet enclycopedia Wikipedia:
"Several film scholars have written interpretations of the film, including several attempts by structuralist semiologists suggesting that the film has a subliminal and symbolic subtext, intended to prepare America's youth for the political radicalism of the 1960s. Such analysis generally points to politically progressive or radical themes touched on in the film, including women's suffrage, the plight of the homeless, and animal rights, as well its mockery of British Naval militarism, and the anti-Capitalist implications of the Banks' children fomenting a panic at their father's bank. The scholars' analyses also suggest that the children's list of requirements for a new nanny can be viewed as a sort of seminal political document (similar to the Magna Carta or Declaration of Independence) and Mary Poppins "pops in" as a sort of anarchist mentor, who consorts with chimney sweep Bert and his friends, iconoclastic representatives of a blighted urban proletariat, in an Edwardian London fattened by imperialism in its final days before World War I."
Do we need further reason to love and adore the seemingly oh-so-sugary innocent supernanny? The musical and it's soundtrack is highly recommended for all children, and for adults who refuse to "grow up" too! It's preferable to the watered down stage version, which seems to avoid and/or ignore social politics alltogether.
This is not the Original LP album released in 1964.......2004-12-05
Just a word to everyone out there. I saw "Mary Poppins" in 1964, and bought its Original Soundtrack Album on Vista Records (a subsidiary of Disney). That album's score was not taken directly from the movie soundtrack (as this "restored" CD release is). Instead, bits of music and dialogue were included in the LP to make for better segues; the "Overture" ends in an entirely different fashion; the biggest damage was done to "Supercali..." where the musical intro has been omitted as well as the comical dialogue in the middle of the song. The sound engineers have stripped out all the charm and warmth of the original Soundtrack version, and yet they call it a "Restored" or "Remastered" version. This is why I continue to play the vinyl version (transferred to CD). And frankly, there is no reason to include all 8 minutes of "Step In Time." If you want all 8 minutes, just watch the DVD -- like every other song, that's where they lifted the music for this CD.
Master Piece!.......2004-07-12
I love this CD! It is a collection of master pieces by the Sherman brothers. The music is fun to dance to and is a great way to brighten up your day. I love turning on my CD player and listening to Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke sing thier hearts out. This is my favorite album in my collection. It is fun for the whole family wheather you are a baby or a teen or an adult or a senior. I am a teen and I LOVE it.
My Favorite Soudtrack.......2004-04-04
This is such a great CD. It has all my absolute favorite songs on it. I think I've watched and listened to the movie and the soundtrack so much now thatI think I know Mary Poppins all by heart! The sound on this CD is just(how else can I express it?)"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!!!!"Julie Andrews's(Mary Poppins) voice is wonderful, and Dick Van Dyke(Bert)makes you remember "Chim-Chim-Cheree".I even use "Stay Awake" and the beautiful lullaby "Feed the Birds" sometimes when I can't get to sleep. This CD is absolutely a must have for Julie Andrews fans, Disney fans,or just anyone who needs a lift.Cheerio!

I saw Mary Poppins in the movies around nineteen sixty eight, It was a re-release and from that day on I fell in love with the song Spoonful Of Sugar, it is one of my favorite songs! At age forty-two I still love this song!

Just amazing.......2001-08-08
This album I got at Disneyland Paris. I saw it and just knew that I had to have it. It's classic disney tunes in the style of the great composers. And it really do remind of them. As a lover of classic music and disney music, this couldn't be a better album.
A Disney Classic!.......2000-03-09
This cd is a great introduction for little ones into the world of classical music. My children ages 6 and 4 have "worn out" their first copy of this lively cd. If you enjoy disney music, this is a must for your children's music library.

Delightful Disney Music.......2007-03-28
These Disney tunes done in the style of classic composers are so much fun. Children and adults alike will enjoy these songs over and over.
Uncle Walt would be quite honored!.......2006-12-20
For many a baby boomer, Walt Disney meant animation. But, besides that, music played an important part in the telling of the story. So interested in music was the animator that he fashioned one of his greatest triumphs ("Fantasia") on the works of the great masters.
Well, Donald Frasier and a bevy of musicians have compiled a wonderful collection of interpretations of familiar Disney tunes, many from Walt's time, along with a few latter day compositions.
Every selection is a winner, destined to make the listener reflect and recall the films from which they came. And if one is familiar with composer whose musical style is "copied" here, the album is a treasure.
Fabulous CD.......2006-10-04
Being a classical music connoisseur, I often listen to my local public classical radio station to hear the works of the great composers of old and of today. One day the station played "Colors of the Wind" and announced it was from this CD. I fell in love with it. I am a huge Disney fan who has over 350 Disney songs on my iPod. Pretty much the only music I listen to is either classical or Disney. And having them combined makes this CD euphoria for the ears.
Each song is in the style of a different classical composer, and usually in the style of one of their more specific songs. One with a trained ear will hear chords and melodies in almost perfect similitude of the original.
I can listen to this CD over and over and never get bored. How could you be bored when you're hearing all of your favorite old Disney songs in a new exciting way?
sleeping to Disney.......2006-07-30
I am really pleased that there is a classical music cd that has only Disney classics so that I can play them for my infant daughter while she sleeps. We are big Disney fans and it's fun to play these instead of the regular classical music. They sound just like the original songs. I would have given 5 stars but I wish they would have had all instrumental music, one of the songs has a choir singing, but it still sound good.
this is a treasure.......2003-05-11
Disney music is always uplifting. Classical music is beautiful. Combine the two - and you get THIS! "Colors of the Wind" is glorious, followed by the enchanting title track. "Beauty and the Beast" is true to the romance of the original. "The Second Star to the Right" is magical. Everything is awesome - and flawless. I initially bought this because I love The Main Street Electrical Parade music, and that is definiely a highlight here - but so are ALL the other songs! This is GOOD STUFF! It is so excellent that it can be a very beneficial introduction to classical music - for kids AND adults.
