Movin' Out (Based on the Songs and Music of Billy Joel) (2002 Original Broadway Cast) [Live] [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A criticism that has long dogged Billy Joel's career involves his songs' direct, heart-on-the-sleeve emotional sentiments and a musical approach that often revels in pop music's past glories instead of reacting against them. Ironically, those are the very strengths of Twyla Tharp's dialog-free pop ballet based on Joel's infectious canon of music, including his recent forays into the classical realm. This live cast recording is fueled by the piano and vocals of Michael Cavanaugh, who, backed by an ensemble handpicked by the songwriter, gooses every last drop of drama from Joel's already theatrical songs with a verve worthy of the legend himself. But divorced from Tharp's always kinetic choreography, and despite angular reworkings of "We Didn't Start the Fire" and other Joel standards, it's a collection that sometimes sounds akin to Joelmania: not really Billy, but an incredible simulation. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

SO glad I bought it =].......2007-06-08
I never got the chance to see this musical on Broadway, so I bought the the CD - I absolutely love Billy Joel, and really like the musical! The CD came in brand new condition. Very happy with my purchase =]
Still Billy Joel to Me.......2007-03-29
I still have to warm up to the guys voice a bit, but the music is awesome. It's amazing how well this music transitions and blends together. There was also a couple of things that got me by surprise. We Didn't Start the Fire is really different, and shows just what his music can do. I'm a little disappointed that Only The Good Die Young didn't get more appreciation, but none the less it still rocks.
Awesome collection of music.......2007-03-09
I saw the show and it was one of the greatest show ever, highly entertaining, great collection of music, as you listen to each song, you can actually imagine the show being played over and over, 5 stars!
Saw the show - what a memory.......2006-08-25
I love Broadway and grew up on the Piano Man (no I am a Chicagoan and haven't yet seen anything on New York's Broadway). This show did justice to both an now I listen to the CD to re-live the event!
Interesting Concept, But Originals Outshine.......2006-07-12
In anticipation of seeing this show, I picked up a copy of the cast cd. The orchestrations were crisp and Michael Cavanaugh's voice was quite good as the "piano man". Best Tracks include:
Scenes From An Italian Restaurant
Movin' Out
We Didn't Start The Fire
Goodnight Saigon
But after attending the show in Chicago last weekend, it was clear that the focal point is (and should be) Twyla Tharp's amazing choreography and the music merely forms a quaint storyline as background. And now? I'd just rather hear Mr. Joel's original versions instead.

Someone should get the word out- she's good. I have this one and her debut from the 60's and all her songs are well done. She does a bluesy type of jazz and she's been doing it for some time now without ever becoming a big star. Aiming at Nothing is the major cut here. Try this or one of herr other cd's and you'll discover a real talent.

This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

What do I need with This?.......2003-07-06
If you are a broadway passer-by, someone who looks to getting to know just what's on broadway and not what's it like, someone who says he's seen all of the broadway shows after reading the "what's on listings" in the papers this is a CD for you. I don't own the CD but own all of the Cds from which songs were taken to make this CD. every musical has it's own style and kind of music, and this CD doesn't even take all the highlights. If you are into really experiencing something when listening to a cd, if you are a real broadway-lover and you are interested in modern musical-writing, every one of the original cast recordings (from which songs were taken to this CD-hairpsray, producers, millie, aida, b&b, boheme, moving out) will be a much bigger enjoyment for you than this one. and most preferabely- all of them! :)

Album Description
on 'Lovechild' Riser has assembled a revolving super group of performers, who have dropped a collection of hit music as funky and soulful as anything from D'Angelo thus far. Incredibly funky grooves through the entire effort. A lot of the songs are reflective of living life and trying to maintain in the new millenium. In fact, this is a set of true millenial R&B done like it'spose ta be!
Not just the music, but how it's delivered with a post-afrocentric, spiritual earthiness that pushes the parameters of anything found on the radio today. bob mitchell

Here, there are a curious experiment !!!.......2005-10-16
There are a curious and simpathy cover versions with a kind of a modern styles of over all songs of Mr.Joel. Don't disturb me anything. I think that is good for people didn't know him, like the new generations of kids doesn't heard this type of music. Movin' out (Anthony's Song) is very good and original cover version. Perfect for dancing in the discos, dance to the music! They did that with another themes song an other artist, why not the great Billy Joel??.
Great Take On Old Tunes - Awesome Remakes!.......2005-08-06
I have had this album for a while and I must say that this artist does Billy Joel justice. I have heard remakes before, but these remakes are the best I have heard. I especially love, "Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)"...
They all sound great and you can tell that this artist is a true Billy Joel fan, when listening to his remakes. He didn't just do this for a profit, you can tell he did it out of love for the music.
garbage.......2005-08-02
it is so refreshing to know that a person with genuine talent and a rare gift for writing great music and lyrics can spend a decade fighting for success, finally achieve deserved recognition, only for some idiot to come along 30 years later and try to make some kind of living off their talent. mind you, how this guy is hoping to get any kind of respect i dont know.he was obviously bored one afternoon and started pressing buttons in some random order on his casio keyboard. The bright idea to try and emulate someone who can actually sing should have have been left in the shower, where it sounds like it was recorded. To make matters worse, the track listing leads you to believe that this man could well be a fan of billy joel. included are cuts like "brenda and eddie" - from scenes from an italian restaurant, "she's got a way" - from 1971's cold spring harbour, and the instrumental "prelude" - from turnstiles, originally recorded in '76.If there are any claims that these awful arrangements put an original spin on the piano mans music, then the re-hashed club arrangements of 10 years ago that have transformed these songs have absolutely nothing original to offer themselves.
I only hope that no other artist has had to endure what this person has done to make a cheap dollar. god forbid that it ever makes it onto the air-waves. Surely even the music business has more sense??
Lets hope so.
