No One Cares
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Essentially the sequel to 1957's Where Are You?, this 1959 release finds Sinatra once again singing tales of woe to the lush accompaniment of Gordon Jenkins' classically influenced arrangements. Torch songs this time around include "Just Friends," "None But the Lonely Heart," "Stormy Weather," and "When No One Cares," all delivered with minimal vocal acrobatics and maximum ache by Ol' Blue Eyes. Some fans may prefer the sparer arrangements of such Nelson Riddle collaborations as In the Wee Small Hours, but this still makes for superior late-night listening. --Dan Epstein --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The Ultimate in Lyrical Intepretation.......2007-06-28
Superior to "Where Are You" (better songs overall) & more depressing than "Only The Lonely". One of Frank's great masterworks when "The Voice" was unmatched in this solar system. To Frank the lyric was EVERYTHING, the melody just supported it. This CD is NOT recommended for anyoune on the emotional edge. You will jump! This CD is the BEST of its kind!!!
We Love Sinatra.......2007-01-09
This CD presents some of his best recordings, when his voice was at its peak, singing some wonderful old songs with feeling. Most of them are not on other CD's or tapes that we own.
One of the best torch albums recorded.......2006-08-15
With its amazing song selection (a great combination of lesser and well known standards), its Billie Holiday-drag tempo and with Sinatra's genius intrepretation you have one of the best down and out "suicide" records ever made. On this record Sinatra really plumbs the depths of despair. It's actually hard to listen to for me. But if you've ever been heartbroken or are going through some kind of emotional turmoil put this record on and you will find a great friend - someone to cry with. Sinatra really understands the lows of existence - the emotional nihilism that haunts us all. Listen to this record it is a total masterpiece!!
Ponderous stuff.......2006-03-24
I am writing this to add a dissenting voice to these high praise proceedings. "No One Cares" is my least favorite of the classic 50s Capitol lps Sinatra recorded. Blame the ponderously slow pace, the pretentious Jenkins arrangements and Sinatra's quavery, somewhat strained delivery of these tunes. There is a lack of humor and bounce here, two qualities Sinatra normally had plenty of ("Can't Get Started" in particular comes off stilted) and compared to another torchy record -- "Wee Small Hours" -- "No One Cares" feels dreary. Nelson Riddle managed to bring swingier, more bouyant elements to "Wee Smalls" set of love songs, while keeping the tempo slow. It is still Sinatra, and still worth hearing, but in my opinion this collection sounds dated, something that cannot be said for most of the other Capitol albums.
NO ONE CARES...........2006-02-12
They should sell this cd with a box of klennex because its that emotional. Excellent. Words fail on how great this cd is. Sinatra....he was the man. Bar none

Customer Reviews:
Where Do You Go?.......2005-10-17
I've owned this album for some time, and many times it seems appropriate to get out the good scotch and a strong cigar and become immersed in this album. There's something stark but spacious in the arrangements. You can picture someone in a crowded but lonely bar, staying until last call, getting one for the road. But then it's time to leave. Lighting up the last cigarette, heading out the door into the chill of the evening in anytown U.S.A. It begins to rain, but you can't go home. Too many memories there. So now what? Where do you go? Well maybe there's another bottle of scotch at home, and a fresh pack of smokes. And there's "No One Cares" already sitting next to the CD player. This is the soundtrack for this type of evening and early morning. Guess you'll be OK. Frank can do that. It's almost as if he understands and takes the load off your shoulders. This is one of the few albums that does this and does it perfectly. Now if you'll excuse me, it's last call. Care to join me?
More Sinatra torch songs recorded with Gordon Jenkins,.......2005-08-27
In 1957 Frank Sinatra worked with a different arranger at Columbia Records other than Nelson Riddle when he recorded a collection of torch songs for "Where Are You?" with arranger Gordon Jenkins. He had started off playing lots of different instruments on the radio, but then Jenkins got into arranging, beginning a prolific career that saw him working with the likes of Benny Goodman and Lennie Hayton. He dabbled on Broadway ("The Show Is On"), the movies, and NBC (arranging for Dick Haymes). Jenkins even gets credit for discovering the Weavers as well as for working with Judy Garland and Nat King Cole. It seems strange that he only one a single Grammy award, in 1967 for the Sinatra album "September of My Years." "No One Cares" came out in 1959, two years after Sinatra and Jenkins worked together for the first time, and while it is not as great as "Where Are You?" but is in the same neighborhood in Lonely Town.
All things considered I think I like Sinatra as a saloon singer best of all, in which case you would want to pick up both of these albums and "Only the Lonely," which Sinatra recorded in 1958 (with Riddle when Jenkins ended up being unavailable). The common denominator here is that these are dark, brooding songs of loneliness. The most recognizable songs on "No One Cares" would be "Stormy Weather" and "I'll Never Smile Again," which was certainly never this depressing when Doris Day sang it. Standout tracks include "A Cottage for Sale," "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You," and "Here's That Rainy Day," although with torch songs it is always a matter of individual taste when it comes down to what sort of sad, melancholy little song can send you spiraling all the way down into the depths of despair.
The title song is a Sammy Cahn tune, and you have to tip your hat to an album of saloon songs that features music by both Cy Coleman, that being "Why Try to Change Me Now"?, and also Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, namely "None but the Lonely Heart" (with lyrics by Bill Westbrook). This reissue of the 1959 album would probably grade out at 4.5 stars if such things were allowed, but I have no problem rounding up given the album's overall quality and the four bonus tracks tacked on at the end of which "This Was My Love" is the best. But given my love of comments parenthetical I should also note there are two such efforts in the bonus quartet, "The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else)" and "You Forgot All the Words (While I Still Remember the Tune)" (where would I be without parenthetical asides?).
one does.......2001-07-08
Great singers can have their indulgences. One can view Sinatra's fondness for the diabetic romanticism of orchestra conductor Gordon Jenkins as a direct opposite to the manic Billy May swing. This is not to say that Nelson Riddle can't do romantic or swing arrangements, but he uses restraint and subtlety. Perhaps the listener of this album takes the cue from the hilarious cover, with Sinatra spotlit, in his uniform raincoat and hat, drinking at a bar looking glum, while ignoring a glamouress woman sitting next to him. If you can believe that conceit, knowing of Sinatra's Rat Pack and Italian attitude to women, then you can probably appreciate the irony of Sinatra's melancholia (though perhaps going from his suicidal reaction to the failure of his marriage to Ava Gardner, it is the men who mistreat women that seem to take their loss the worst). At times the voice sounds strained, there is the occasional bum note, and often Jenkins' seems to be fighting Sinatra for attention, but at their collaborative best on the seminal I'll Never Cry Again and I Don't Stand A Ghost of a Chance With You, the results are sublime. For me Stormy Weather is a mistake, and None But The Lonely Heart a failed experiment. I prefer the religious sounding notes that open Ghost of a Chance and particurlarly Where Do You Go?. My favourite track is Here's That Rainy Day, where Jenkins pulls back a little, apart from a gush towards the end. Also noteworthy is the musical descent for the end of the title cut reminiscent of Riddle's Goodbye from Only The Lonely, and the witty lyrics of Why Try To Change Me Now, refreshing in the otherwise depressive context.
The darkest Sinatra album of all......and it's WONDERFUL.......1999-09-06
No One Cares is often erroneously left out of Sinatra's greatest albums list. I am extremely disappointed that it has not been remastered, it deserves to be. Listening to this album, it's as if Frank had a button on his throat to push to get different vocal qualities from his voice. Just listen to the overall dark quality of his voice in this gem. It is a different voice, a bleak and hurt voice; it's a sound not heard on any other album. It's amazing. I'm a singer and can respect true genious when I hear it; Sinatra is a vocal musical genious. No one...I repeat ...NO ONE can sing a song like Frank. These songs surpass your ears, attack your heart, and rest in your soul. His voice sounds as if he's at the point of breaking from sadness, the vulnerability he demonstrates musically is staggering. There are singers...and then there is Sinatra. He's singer, actor, friend, lover,fighter,winner,loser,hard-man, vunerable-boy, all rolled into one voice. It's here...on every song, in every note. And it's beautiful. This album is a MUST.

His choice of selections, coupled with the innovative and lush arrangements of Gorden Jenkins, make this one of the less well-known but absolutely essential albums to have in your Sinatra collection. Listen to "A Cottage for Sale," for example. It is clearly the most stirring rendition recorded--you won't be disappointed!

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-10-20
Equity Digital is rereleasing pianist Michael Dulin's two earlier classical recordings at the same time as his newest release, "Timeless: Classics for a New Age" (October 19, 2004). Originally released in 1999, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is comprised of "The Gershwin Songbook," Six Preludes, and eight Improvisations that were never written down by Gershwin himself, but were transcribed from live radio broadcasts from 1926 and 1928 by Artis Wodehouse. Dulin's mastery of the piano makes all thirty-two tracks seem effortless and showcase his brilliant virtuosity as well as his amazing versatility. A world-class pianist with a long career in classical music, Dulin makes all of these pieces his own, giving them a sparkling freshness and a feeling of spontaneity. He added some of his own embellishments to the improvisations, but otherwise, remains faithful to Gershwin's original scores.
The extensive liner notes, also written by Dulin, give insight into Gershwin's personality with quotations from other artists and people who knew Gershwin, and then gives a history of many of the selections. "The Gershwin Songbook" was originally published in 1932, and is made up of eighteen variations and arrangements of songs that Gershwin used to entertain his friends in the intimacy of living room settings. Many of Gershwin's most famous and popular songs are included such as "The Man I Love," "Swanee," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Lady Be Good," "'S Wonderful," and "I Got Rhythm." The variety of styles is amazing - from bluesy ballads to full-tilt finger-flying jazz. Dulin's emotional range and tonal colorations are remarkable. The Six Preludes are quite short, and Dulin calls the firs three "his most perfect compositions." Of the six, I especially like "Blue Lullaby," a dark, slinky little piece. Some of the eight Improvisations are variations or arrangements of pieces from the songbook, so it is fascinating to see what Gershwin (and Dulin!) did to flesh them out. Again, Dulin's playing is fresh and flawless. Some of the titles in this section of the recording are "Clap Yo' Hands," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sweet and Low Down," and "'S Wonderful/Funny Face."
If you are new to Gershwin's music, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is an absolute must-have. If you know all of Gershwin's music, this is also a must-have to hear the music as it was composed and interpreted by the composer himself. So much of Gershwin's music has been performed and recorded over the years, and most of it is improvised and arranged by the various musicians who play it, so it's refreshing as well as informative to hear the "real deal" - or, at the very least, how the music began and evolved during Gershwin's life. I give "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" my highest recommendation. Great stuff!
Highly Recommended!.......2000-05-01
This is a fabulous performance of Gershwin's piano music. The CD includes some great music and new arrangements that I was unfamiliar with. Dulin plays the fire out of the piano on this CD. I heard him play live in New York, and he is a great player. I have a lot of Gershwin's music, and this CD is one of my favorites!
