Drunken, tacky, and undoubtedly a piece of history, The Summit: In Concert captures a 1962 Chicago supper-club show by the three biggest names in the Rat Pack. The apparently unedited tape clocks in at more than 78 minutes, with plenty of the trio's banter preserved--for better or worse. (Sinatra: "Shut up, Sam, and sit in the back of the bus!" Davis: "Jewish people don't sit in the back of the bus!" Sinatra: "Jewish people own the bus!") There's some fine singing, of course; though Sinatra seems to be going through the motions during most of his solo miniset, his "When Your Lover Has Gone" is a highlight, as is Davis's "Out of this World." More an intriguing document than an entertaining repeat listen--thanks in part to the anarchic interruptions of many of the second half's songs--Summit is for those who already own the guys' truly worthy recordings. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Debut release on the Sinatra Family's Artanis label (th rough DCC), a stunning stereo live recording featuring Frank Sinatra alongside his singing Rat Pack buddies Dean Marti n and Sammy Davis Jr. performing at the Villa Venice in Chicago in November 1962. Digitally remastered from the origina l tapes and pressed on a 24 karat gold disc, it features 20 tracks clocking in at an amazing 79 minutes. Each copy is individually numbered. Comes packaged in a standard jewel case within a colorful die-cut slipcase cover with the CD booklet hidden inside. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Phenomenal Trombonist!.......2007-05-18

Joseph Alessi is one of the most gifted trombonists and musicians of our time. His technical and musical mastery are wonderful. This is an outstanding collection and should be required listening for all aspiring trombonists.

I bought this CD for my boss as a christmas present and he plays it in the office all the time. I didn't know what it would be like and ended up loving it. Even though there is an age difference of more than 25 years between us, my boss and I loved this CD. The music is enchantingly beautiful, uplifting and relaxing. I guess a great piece realy crosses over all generations and musical tastes. Alessi is a master with the trombone. A great buy!

The Carmen piece is soo crazy...Alessi is the most amazing player i've ever heard. Seemless tone quality, perfect intonation even in fast passages, flawless accuracy in every song...if you haven't heard Joe Alessi I suggest you get this CD first!!

If you have never heard Joe Alessi you need to get this CD. If you have heard him you need to get it, too. I own most of Joe Alessi's CDs and this one is definately my favorite. He shows us why he is one of the world's best trombonists, if not the BEST! The Carmen Fantasy will knock your socks off! If that isn't enough, listen to Doolallynastics, or Three Gershwin Melodies, or the Debussy tunes.... It's also great hearing Sulek's Sonata, a standard piece from the trombone repertoire. The two pieces with the Juilliard Alumni Trombone Choir are really good, too. There isn't a single dud in this collection, but, of course, there never is on any of Alessi's recordings. Buy this CD and play for it for anyone you know who doesn't think the trombone can be beautiful solo instrument.

A must for any rat pack fan. Just wish I was there to see it live. It seems like a time we'll never see again. Too Bad. Worth a purchase.

An incredible collection........2001-12-05

Firstly unless I'm mistaken (which of course has
never happened before ;) ) this title is also
the live at the villa in chicago 1962 two disc
collection.

This collection made me a fan of Sammy Davis Jr.
I have been a longtime Sinatra fan and knew Sammy
could dance and sing but until hearing this I
never realized just how talented the man was.
Sammy really is the star of the show on these discs.
Frank, of course, is Frank and Dean was his usual suave
self..but Sammy was the star with his wonderful singing
voice and impressions. By all means stop everything and
get this set, it's more than worth it.

This is a must have for any die hard fans of the Rat Pack--particularly those of us who weren't fortunate enough to be around during their glory years. As Dino said "if you want singing by an album", but if you want to experience the swagger and charisma that was the rat pack at the height of their powers buy The Summit:In Concert.There's some quality vocalizing from all three--but what predominates is the silly, self-amused shtick for which these guys were known.Turn the lights down, mix a martini, and go back to a time when men were men, and these guys ruled!

Invite your friends over, drink some martinis, and push play. The best party album I have ever heard. Play it over and over again - no one ever gets tired of listening to it. Now, how'd all these people getin-t-my room *hic*

Fun was had by all.......2001-03-21

This is about the most fun you can have listening to a CD. This is not just a collection of songs. The entire show is captured, clowning around and all, to give you the feeling that you are sitting in the wings at this 1962 concert. Some of the reviews suggest that the second half of the CD, with the songs interrupted by jokes and often left unfinished, detracts from the album as a whole...don't listen to them! It adds to the feeling of being part of the fun happening on stage. This is one to listen to again and again.

Orchestral Trumpet Player's Bible:.......2003-05-08

I carry this recording around with me in my case, and listen to it before auditions, concerts, rehearsals, etc. It's simply how the excerpts (along with trumpet playing in general) should sound. Smith's virtuostic playing, coupled with his vast orchestral experience, really teach the parts. All trumpet players, top to bottom, have something to learn from this CD--and while the entire work (with orchestra) and part should be studied (Smith actually recommends this), it is still very useful to hear one of the finest players on earth performing just the trumpet part.

Essential Recording for Any Trumpet Player.......2001-05-24

If any principal orchestral trumpet player has succeeded Adolph Herseth as the "state of the art," the probable consensus among his peers would be Philip Smith of the New York Philharmonic. His virtually flawless technique, gourgeous sound, rarified musicianship and exceptional leadership make him virtually unique in his field, and his more than 20 years with the Philharmonic (plus his early years with the Chicago Symphony) have firmly established him as one of the greats in the history of orchestral brass performance.

Measured simply as a documentation of his skills, this recording would be an extraordinary document - the playing throughout is stupendous. But this is much more than that; Mr. Smith proves to be as articulate (mild "New Yoahk" accent and all) as he is talented, and his performance suggestions are truly helpful, even for those of us without his superhuman abilities. The recorded sound is superb, and overall this is a joy to listen to at every level. I recommend it without reservation for any trumpet player aspiring to a higher level of musicianship and performance - and if you play it at full volume shortly after your warmup, your neighbors will be very impressed.

As a trumpet player, I must say that Phil Smith's comments during each track are immensely beneficial. His thoughts have produced profound understanding in my trumpet playing, and despite the fact that this CD is intended as a grouping of Phil Smith's insights into common Orchestral Excerpts and his following demonstration, I have countless times listened out of pure enjoyment than to gain expert insight. His tone is the most beautiful I have ever heard, and it shows on this CD. I recommend this particularly for any aspiring trumpet student.

The previous reviewer of this CD missed the point of the CD. Lets say your working on the Carmern Prelude or Stravinsky Pétrouchka you buy this CD, and learn how Philip Smith (one of the greatest symphonic trumpet players in the world) would interpret and play it. Thats why its entitled Orchestra Trumpet Excerpts.
