4 out of 5 stars An Historical Treasure!!.......2004-03-12

I was SO glad to have purchased this CD.It's definitely an historical treasure and contains music that may be from the 50s but is as fresh today as it was back then.
The wonderful Hi-Lo's,which I have recently "rediscovered" on "The Rosemary Clooney Show" which is currently running(yes the original 56-57 show!!) on "Cool-TV" on Canadian Cable,do not fail to disappoint.Though they aren't quite as musically outgoing as on Rosemarys' show, they still turn in a great job on their solo numbers and back Rosemary with great taste on their joint ventures.
I can't say enough about these boys as their musical harmonies were quite advanced even for their time and have continued to impress this reviewer even after all these years. As with the other artists on this album they were simply...."originals".
Rosemary Clooney, well what can one say about Rosie? She delivers her vocal "chores" with great ease throughout her mellifluous musical travels on this CD.This is Rosie in her prime and it is a joy to hear her straight and up front delivery as only she could do it.Her backing in the form of the Hi-Lo's and later on in the disc,Harry James,is as seamless as it gets.
Harry James one of the greatest trumpeters of all times and also in his prime, does not fail to disappoint either. He works his magical horn into his numbers with great beauty and integrates Rosie's vocals magically into the arrangements. It's an absolute marvel to hear and a testament to all involved in these recordings.
Should you buy this CD? Whether your a James fan,a Clooney fan ,a Hi-Los fan or a just plain GREAT music fan....I highly recommend this to you.Enjoy!!
As an aside,I'd like to say what a shame it is,but at the same time how baffling it is that it takes "Collectables" records and all of the other myriad of small independant record/cd companies out there in the marketplace,to be the ones to release this CD and the thousands of others available in every genre of music imaginable.Without those companies we would ALL be ALOT poorer off musically. What is it with the "major" labels???? I find it simply appalling. If it's rare it's usually available through an independent or if a major label DOES put it out,it more than likely comes from a foreign source(an import).Does this make sense to anyone?? To all the major labels out there.........SHAME....and WAKE UP!!!

3 out of 5 stars ring around rosie.......2002-09-07

Someone with an obvious love for safe and static harmonies called the participation of the Hi-Lo's on this recording "sickening". What rubbish!! The Hi-Lo's have been the most influential vocal group since the mid-1950's. Ask the Manhattan Transfer,Take 6,or, read Rosie's take on the group in her biography. Their performance on half of this offering adds some needed technicolor to what is ultimately a nice middle of the road recording.

5 out of 5 stars Ring Around Rosie/Hollywood's Best.......2002-07-01

The pairing of Rosemary Clooney with the Hi-Los was inspired. The Hi-Los are regarded by most musicians as one of the best vocal groups ever. If you're not a fan then buy another album. If you are a Hi-Los fan then this is the album to have. Rosie handles her duets with the Hi-Los with her smooth as velvet voice and her solos are beyond compare.

4 out of 5 stars VERY FINE ROSEMARY CLOONEY...!.......2001-08-01

I thought this was a good album to own. I'm not a great fan of the Hi Lo's on this album and my favorite songs for the most part were not on these tracks. But other then that,it was very good and I think worth buying. I did.

4 out of 5 stars Rosemary Clooney:Among Her Best.......2000-08-11

It's hard to believe that Rosemary Clooney is over 70 years old now. This new CD, issued on the Collectibles label, contains two of her classic albums on one CD. One LP is her recordings with the sickening Hi-Los, and the other is her LP with Harry James. Rosemary sings eight songs with the Hi-Los, and then they sing four songs on their own. I've never been a fan of them, so that is why this CD loses one star. You can't go wrong hearing Clooney croon "I'm In The Mood For Love"(one of the best versions of that song) or sing the tneder Matt Dennis ballad "Everything Happens To Me".

The album she did with Harry James is the crowning jewel of this cassette. The best recordings Clooney does with Harry James are "You'll Never Know" and "It Might As Well Be Spring". You'll catch yourself closing your eyes and getting lost in listening to the velvet voice of Clooney and the lush trumpet of James. I would heartly recommend this music to all lovers of great music and great standards...

4 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-04-07

I hesitated buying this CD because I had Rosemary singing some of these songs on another recording (Rosie Sings Bing, I think). But they are most definitely NOT the same. On this CD, Rosie sings with a Jazz trio--with an organ as a major instrument. On other recordings, the backgrounds are more lush and "produced." On THIS recording, I swear, you can almost visualize them all playing in a smoky nightclub. I too, wish they had identified musicians, and the liner notes were really not worth reproducing. Mostly, though, you need to realize that this might be the best set of standards that Rosemary Clooney recorded. The original recording was done in 1958, and I am thrilled that I was able to enjoy it today. If you are hesitant, don't be afraid to buy from one of the vendors selling used copies. Mine cost me $2.50. It would have been worth full price.

4 out of 5 stars Rosemary C. in her element!.......2003-10-26

This lovely reissue brings back one of Rosemary Clooney's most sought-after albums of the 60's - 'Swing Around Rosie'. Accompanied by the Buddy Cole Trio, this album is pure FUN!

Rosemary Clooney swings through numbers like "Goody Goody", "This Can't Be Love" (from THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE), "Deed I Do", "You Took Advantage of Me" and "Moonlight Mississippi (A Whistle-Stop Town)".

Jauntily-orchestrated by the Buddy Cole Trio, Rosemary is in her element, singing these superb numbers. This limited edition reissue reproduces the album complete with the Coral logo and the original liner notes. It's being discontinued in 2005 but I hear that copies will get harder and harder to get as early as next year, so I advise you to snap up this superb CD while you can!

Highly-recommended for Rosemary Clooney and show music fans.

3 out of 5 stars To Buddy Cole for Comfort.......2003-06-04

I started to listen to Rosemary after hearing her sing on an album of Gershwins songs recorded by Michael Feinstein in 1987: "Pure Gershwin". I have to admit that up until then I'd looked on Rosemary Clooney as something of a lightweight singer. Little did I know! So the first 10 albums I listened to were from her Concord periode. What I liked the most was the timbre of her voice. Some of it came from age, some from experience, but as it turned out, for the most part it had been there all the time.

This album looks like a sure winner, the horrible picture on the cover aside. How could you loose with an album crammed full of great songs? For a starter you could get together with the Buddy Cole Trio. OK, I don't like Hammond-Organ Jazz, but worse than that: The arrangements are almost embarrassing to listen to. That great song "To Close for Comfort" made famous by Sammy Davis Jr, here really makes my skin crawl. I know a lot of you out there will disagree with me, but if you want the young Rosemary: Go for another album. THAT aside: She sings great!!! That's where the 3 stars are earned. The last two sits on my CD-shelf with this album that I hardly ever play.

4 out of 5 stars Finally!!!.......2002-04-17

As a die-hard Rosemary Clooney fan, I've been looking for this LP for years! I'm thrilled that it is finally available in the US on CD. It was definitely worth the wait. I wish Verve had seen fit to give us the musician info and new liner notes I've come to expect from them, but just having this is wonderful. I love to hear 50's-60's era Clooney recordings, and this is a welcome addition to my collection

4 out of 5 stars A great performance, but why so expensive?.......2002-04-13

Rosemary Clooney has been one of the most underrated singers of our time. Her senses of rhythm and pitch rank up there with the best of them. This album is a terrific example of her abilities.

My only complaint with Verve is the price. The ... CD is only 28 minutes long! It's supposedly a limited edition package, and the sound is great, but the price is absurd.

If you want to understand what good American music was like in the late 1950s and early 1960s, you need this album. I also recommend Ms. Clooney's "Rosie Solves the Swinging Riddle," in my opinion the best album she ever did.

As for this record, it will feel good on the ears.

3 out of 5 stars Rosemary Clooney's 1950s radio transcriptions.......2005-04-14

According to an old Gary Giddins article in the Village Voice, the date of which I can't find, these recordings were originally transcriptions that were sent out to radio stations in the 1950s, with Rosemary's voice and Buddy Cole's organ. Rosemary has a great voice and Buddy Cole was a great organist. (Cole played piano with Bing Crosby and Doris Day, among other artists from that time.) However, the problem with collecting so many singles together is that the format becomes repetitive. The same thing can be said about Barbra Streisand's "Simply Streisand" album from the late sixties. (Most of the arrangements end with a crescendo on SS.) My favorite songs are "Goody, Goody" and "Too Close For Comfort". But listening to the cd, you might feel like you're in an ice skating rink and Lily Tomlin is behind the organ keyboard.

5 out of 5 stars Rosemary Clooney with Buddy Cole's jazz trio..........2000-05-23

Rosemary Clooney with a jazz trio led by organist/pianist Buddy Cole, Clooney gets hot on numbers like "Sing You Sinners" and "This Can't Be Love." One of her more enjoyable non-Mitch Miller(Thank God...)sets. This is Rosie swingin' with a trio, a represntitive set of Clooney the jazz singer. Also try "Blue Rose" Rosemary Clooney With Duke Ellington & His Orchestra, another Clooney gem.
