Brooklyn The Musical (2004 Original Broadway Cast) [Cast Recording]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
When Brookyn the Musical landed on Broadway, many reviewers said that the American Idol sound had come along with it. It¹s hard to disagree, especially when Eden Espinosa, playing the title character, opens her mouth. Espinosa, who learned the performing ropes in California theme parks, is an unfocused belter who mistakes grandstanding melisma for emotion. And overemoting is the last thing you want to do when you have to deliver lines such as "This weight in my heart/This ache in my soul/This yearning in my heart just keeps on going on/There's a voice deep inside/And it cries and it cries." Unfortunately, the tunes (mixing rock, gospel and R&B, and recorded in front of a live studio audience) don't make much of an impact. Newcomers Mark Shoenfeld and Barri McPherson have come up with a well-meaning show that brims with enthusiastic naïveté but ultimately fails to convince. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

not RENT, but give it a try.......2007-03-26
STOP SPREADING THE WORD THAT THIS IS LIKE RENT.
awesome. that's it. it's not comparable to Rent because, with the exception of character types and the set, it is not at all like Rent. It's worth $25 just to hear Eden belt out "Once Upon A Time." However, i don't reccomend just buying that song on iTunes or something because there are deffinately other really good songs (heart behind these hands, raven, etc.) don't be afrai to buy this because it's not like Rent. in case you didn't notice a lot of other really good musicals are also not like Rent... if you are at a loss of thinking of some, let me help you- Wicked, The Light in the Piazza, Spamalot, Sound of Music, Gypsy, Pajama Game, Millie, Avenue Q. oh, PS most of thoses musicals were nominated for BEST MUSICAL at the TONYS and they arn't like Rent either.
Not the next Rent...just as good.......2006-10-26
I think the biggest problem most people have with new musical theatre is that they want to compare it with past big hits. Personally, when everyone said this would be the next RENT I was disappointed...I didn't want another Rent...I wanted something new. Then I listened to it...it's not Rent...but it's just as good and in some places, better. The voices are overall better and best of all, it isn't a big hype like Rent. I love Rent and always will, but it's not THAT great...there's more theatre out there and Brooklyn is great...
Now go broaden your broadway collection and stop listening to Rent, Wicked, Les Mis and Phantom....there's so much more!
Why I lyk it.......2006-03-26
I really like this album- especially "Heart behind these hands" because i recently took part in a young americans workshop, and i discovered the real meaning to this song, and now it really means alot to me.
Not worth it..........2006-02-26
I only purchased this album after hearing "Once Upon A Time" on a website. I figured I would buy the album for that and discover what other good songs were on the album. So far, I have listened to "Once Upon A Time" around 100 times and everyother song only once...once is a enough. These songs, with the exception of "Once Upon A Time," failed to thrill me and I was disappointed with a lot of the melodies. I searched and searched for "Once Upon A Time," as a single to download, but its no where to be found. A glorious song on an otherwise horrible album.
Not worth it..........2005-11-03
I saw this show on Broadway with several friends, and none of us enjoyed it at all. I found it to be extremely flat and disinteresting; the music was rather annoying and non-inspirational. After a weekend of great shows, I found myself looking at my watch to see when this one would be over. None of the singers are more than mediocre, and the storyline is not intriguing in the least. The one good factor of this show was the ending, which was rather surprising considering the rest of the show.
It's really not worth your money, either on Broadway or in a recording.

A piece of history.......2006-06-03
Many of the songs on this recording are not available in sheet music, and although the sound quality isn't "leading edge" it makes me feel as though I am listening to actual performers back in the 30's & 40's, with young and gifted singers like Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, and Mel Torme, as well as others who are nameless or unknown to me on this album, and a delight to listen to. Manhattan Tower is why I bought this CD, and I got so much more from it than I bargained for. The illusion I have when I play it is that I am a young jazz artist in New York, feeling the pulse of the city and filling up with everything about being a part of New York.
A BIG disappointment!.......2004-08-19
I bought this CD for the Slaughter on Tenth Avenue soundtrack ballet by Richard Rodgers and Lennie Hayton. But none of the tracks on this CD can be appreciated. It is a mono recording, and that immediately leaves you with a very incomplete sound. No amount of treble and bass adjustment can eliminate the awful tinny sound throughout the disc.

Kelly Hops Again!.......2001-04-01
Compared to the "original" cast album, which was the two writers and a piano, this album is a dream. Still, it would have been great to hear the original orchestrations instead of a studio band. The performances on this CD give the show some credibility, unlike the first album. One wants to see more of this type of thing done. But put in the original orchestrations. How about Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Yearling, La Strada? If you are a serious collector nab this while you can.
A FITTING TRIBUTE TO MOOSE CHARLAP.......2001-03-22
HAVING BEEN ONE OF THE VERY FEW WHO SAW "KELLY" in 1965,I WAS VERY PLEASED TO FIND THIS STUDIO RECORDING OF THE ORIGINAL MUSIC. I DO MEAN ORIGINAL. SOME OF THE SONGS THAT WERE WRITTEN WERE LATER REMOVED BY A GROUP OF PANIKY PRODUCERS PRIOR TO THE NEW YORK OPENING. THEIR ACTIONS RESULTED IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT SHOW THAN HAD BEEN ENVISIONED BY THE COMPOSERS. IT ALSO MADE "KELLY" A MONUMENTAL FLOP SO MUCH SO THAT ITS DEMISE WAS THE SUBJECT OF A COVER STORY IN "SATURDAY EVENING POST". IF YOU READ THE CD NOTES..IT IS ALL EXPLAINED THERE. THE CD IS DEDICATED TO MOOSE CHARLAP. THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, INCLUDING BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES (TITANIC) AND RIGHT OUT OF THE 60'S, SANDY STEWART. IT MAY HAVE SOME SHORTCOMINGS, BUT OVERALL..EDDIE LAWRENCE SCORED WITH THIS CD!
WHERE ARE THE ORIGINAL SONGS?.......2000-02-10
TO START OFF WITH. THIS DOES NOT SOUND LIKE A BROADWAY CAST ALBUM. IT SOUNDS LIKE AN OFF BROADWAY ALBUM BY LISTENING TO THE ORCHESTRA. IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE A BAND THAN AN ORCHESTRA. SECOND,I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE SCORE FROM THE ORIGINAL SHOW. WELL, READINNG MY BEST PLAYS OF 1964-1965, THEY LIST THE SONGS ON OPENING NIGHT AND A BUNCH OF SONGS ARE NOT ON THE ALBUM AND SONGS ON THE ALBUM ARE NOT LISTED IN THE BOOK. I AM CONFUSED. ANWAY, WHATEVER IS ON THE CD IS FAIR. ALL THE PERFORMERS ARE FIRST RATE, BUT LISTENING TO THE CD, IT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH. PRETTY AVERAGE MUSIC. TAKE A LESSON FROM THE DRAT!THE CAT! RECORDING ON VARESE SARABANDE. NOW THATS A GREAT STUDIO CAST ALBUM. I DON'T KNOW WHY THEY PICKED KELLY OVER MANY OTHER SHOWS THAT HAVE A MUCH BETTER SCORE THAT WERE NEVER RECORDED LIKE THE BODY BEAUTIFUL OR SHERRY OR LOVELY LADIES, KIND GENTLEMAN TO NAME A FEW. IF YOU ARE A BROADWAY SHOW COLLECTOR THAN THIS SHOULD BE IN YOUR COLLECTION, OTHERWISE, I WOULD PASS.

Customer Reviews:
from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-10-20
Equity Digital is rereleasing pianist Michael Dulin's two earlier classical recordings at the same time as his newest release, "Timeless: Classics for a New Age" (October 19, 2004). Originally released in 1999, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is comprised of "The Gershwin Songbook," Six Preludes, and eight Improvisations that were never written down by Gershwin himself, but were transcribed from live radio broadcasts from 1926 and 1928 by Artis Wodehouse. Dulin's mastery of the piano makes all thirty-two tracks seem effortless and showcase his brilliant virtuosity as well as his amazing versatility. A world-class pianist with a long career in classical music, Dulin makes all of these pieces his own, giving them a sparkling freshness and a feeling of spontaneity. He added some of his own embellishments to the improvisations, but otherwise, remains faithful to Gershwin's original scores.
The extensive liner notes, also written by Dulin, give insight into Gershwin's personality with quotations from other artists and people who knew Gershwin, and then gives a history of many of the selections. "The Gershwin Songbook" was originally published in 1932, and is made up of eighteen variations and arrangements of songs that Gershwin used to entertain his friends in the intimacy of living room settings. Many of Gershwin's most famous and popular songs are included such as "The Man I Love," "Swanee," "Fascinating Rhythm," "Lady Be Good," "'S Wonderful," and "I Got Rhythm." The variety of styles is amazing - from bluesy ballads to full-tilt finger-flying jazz. Dulin's emotional range and tonal colorations are remarkable. The Six Preludes are quite short, and Dulin calls the firs three "his most perfect compositions." Of the six, I especially like "Blue Lullaby," a dark, slinky little piece. Some of the eight Improvisations are variations or arrangements of pieces from the songbook, so it is fascinating to see what Gershwin (and Dulin!) did to flesh them out. Again, Dulin's playing is fresh and flawless. Some of the titles in this section of the recording are "Clap Yo' Hands," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sweet and Low Down," and "'S Wonderful/Funny Face."
If you are new to Gershwin's music, "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" is an absolute must-have. If you know all of Gershwin's music, this is also a must-have to hear the music as it was composed and interpreted by the composer himself. So much of Gershwin's music has been performed and recorded over the years, and most of it is improvised and arranged by the various musicians who play it, so it's refreshing as well as informative to hear the "real deal" - or, at the very least, how the music began and evolved during Gershwin's life. I give "A Nice Boy From Brooklyn" my highest recommendation. Great stuff!
Highly Recommended!.......2000-05-01
This is a fabulous performance of Gershwin's piano music. The CD includes some great music and new arrangements that I was unfamiliar with. Dulin plays the fire out of the piano on this CD. I heard him play live in New York, and he is a great player. I have a lot of Gershwin's music, and this CD is one of my favorites!

Truly Anointed.......2004-11-30
To date this is undoubtedly the most beautiful, complete and anointed Christmas CD's I have ever had the privilege of listening to. I find myself having to just stop what I am doing and listen as it draws me into worship like very few albums have the power to do. It ends with Jesus is Coming Again and is in my opinion a wonderful gift to give to anyone who you want to share the wonderful message of the saving grace of our Lord. This CD is indeed one of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's finest!!!
A superb Christmas cantata!.......2001-07-11
This is one of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's finest moments, with plenty of their trademark polished vocals, dramatic string arrangements -- and of course, the powerful message of the Gospel as only they can deliver it.
It's too bad there are no song samples available from this hard to find album; but whether or not you're a BTC fan, you will NOT be disappointed. Buy it and be reminded once again of how truly effective spiritual Christmas music can be at reviving the soul.
