The Frogs (2004 Broadway Cast)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
For a long time, Stephen Sondheim's 1974 compact offering The Frogs was known for two things. It was originally staged in Yale's swimming pool with a chorus that included Sigourney Weaver and Meryl Street; and its song "Invocation and Instructions to the Audience" has become a perennial in Sondheim tributes and cabaret shows. The show was given a belated studio recording in 2001 with Nathan Lane in the lead role of Dionysus. Lane then went back for more--literally, since he adapted and expanded Burt Shevelove's book--and Sondheim wrote several new songs. Finally, The Frogs was a full-length musical, staged in 2004. New tracks "I Love to Travel" and "Ariadne" are on par with Sondheim's best--the first a bouncy song, the latter a wrenching love song that could become a new recital favorite. While this recording is more enjoyable than the actual show, which could be a bit of a slog, it's hard to shake the feeling that maybe The Frogs should have remained a curio. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Les Claypool's premature midlife crisis has resulted in the second of two grandiose albums in under four months. But Live Frogs--Set 2, recorded at the same two-night stint in San Francisco as the first set, is a much different beast than the inventive jam-band noodlings of its predecessor. And beast is the operative term. The bass master decided to take on the darkest of Pink Floyd's albums, doing an almost note-perfect rendition of Animals. Claypool and company have subsumed Roger Waters's nihilistic lyrics and rendered them even spookier by giving them a more ominous comic-book feel--imbuing the words with much more irony and adenoidal bite than Waters and David Gilmour's original sterile, android-like vocals. Although Frog Brigade's made-for-TV version of the bleak anthropomorphic classic lacks the subtle orchestration of the original, they do make up for it in sheer zealousness and invention. --Jaan Uhelszki

    5 out of 5 stars Floyd's Animals done justice.......2007-02-01

If you are a Floyd Fan ~ this is truly an experience you will want to hear. It's the full album ~ as it should be. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars best Les Claypool offering .......2007-01-29

Not only is this the best Les Claypool offering, it's only the second CD I have kept of him. Oysterhead is another, but I rate that second to this one. Pigs on a wing songs start and end this cd is, well not much, it's all the meat of the 3 songs in the middle. I have this on ipod and we sat on the north shore of Lake Tahoe and watched the sun set with this baby going. its a long 3 songs, Talk about trippin.

Sorry to slam all the rest of his work, I just don't like it. Primus sounds to much like a bunch of guys running into each other. I have given Primus cd's and tried 2 concerts, all because I love bass and Les is well, you know, the man on bass. Frogs live 1 didnt work for me either, now the SHOW was cool, loved that, but does not transfer over to cd that well. why I have no idea. I WANT it to work out. I wished I were into ALL Of the mans music.

I saw Frogs in concert in what, 2001?

Todd Huth on geetars. He was bringing out all kinds of dif ones.

And Tree Frog, that's his name, on percussion, he wore this all green doctor outfit, and just went ape on the drums, standing the whole time. That was a show!! One of the best I ever seen of any show of any band, and I have been to hundreds of concerts. I am only a couple months older than Les.

    Sherik on sax, monster player.

And the man that drove the whole show, not Jay Lane, some black guy on drums, who IS this guy I have not been able to find out. Was a sit in? I have seen the primus DVD with the frogs and the black guy that was in the show I saw is not on the DVD, and several shows are on the DVD, dude was killer! Looks like Isaac Hayes or close! Drove the whole show! Why isn't he on the DVD??!!!??? WHO IS HE! Can anyone tell me? Please post a reply if you know.

So if you or someone you know like PF AND bass, but not Primus type metal, then this is the deal. Heck I dont even like most of PF the WALL album, but Roger Waters In The Flesh CD/DVD is one of the best all time albums ever. That can spin on my ipod just about anytime and never get tired of it after all these years.

what the hey, I guess I am as weird as Les.

maybe this is due to the Flesh cd and Frogs live 2 put out so much power out of the recording? All the reg PF cd's dont put out any power, I have sold them all. why is all this, I dont get it. Is it the people who mix it? the producers? the equipment used to record it? I can take these same cd's and play them in everything I own, home, car, ipod, all several thousand dollars worth of media, rattle windows if want, or use friends and families, its all the same. And everyone reacts the same way as I do. So go figure.

At home I also have Sennheiser 595 headphones, stunning. worth the money.

Sorry Les, I hear another version of the Frogs is out again, I missed them last year, and a new album is due out, but some delay for whatever reasons. I hope its good. Waited for how long for PF Pulse to come out and all this chatter about it that led up to it, turned out to be more lame junk.

Yea I am picky, so what, whatever, its my money, I deserve better, we all do. I know whats good after 25 years of listening.

If Les would go on tour and play a reg set and then this music off this cd for second set. At all shows not just the SF show one time only deal that turned out this great cd, now that would be stunning and floor everyone that goes and send them out the doors happy as can be.

I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan for the last 20 years and Animals was always the "Dark" albumn you'd listen to when in certain moods...
I've always liked Primus, but was never a HUGE fan.. until thier DVD came out and it seemed every other weekend I'd be jonesin to watch it.. I looked through the catolog of Les Claypool and found this.. 1 week later it came to my house and was put in without a second...
This CD has such a rock solid foundation of the original it is amazing! It actually seems more busy than the original meaning the bass just jumps out at you.. I guess I was expecting Les Claypool to adlib parts of bass, but he never does..It is a serious duplicate of the original.. Its got it all.. Voice Box guitars, keyboards, sounds like Gilmour himself is playing.. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a Pink Floyd fan.. This beats the crap outta Roger Waters solo "Live Wall" disaster... which is nuts cause that was 1/4 Floyd..

Fans grieved when Les Claypool put his funk-metal band Primus on ice, after he declared that he had reached an aesthetic dead end. It seems the bass-wrangling frontman has worked himself out of his creative despondency. Claypool's band of collaborators, including original Primus guitarist Todd Huth, Critters Buggin' saxophonist Skerik, Rat Dog's Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti, Pearl Jam/Chili Pepper's skinbeater Jack Irons, and newcomer Eenor, turn out 70 minutes of live alchemy with the sum so much greater than its seemingly disparate parts. The rag-tag band take obscure diamonds in the rough and transform them into extended, edgy soundscapes that tickle the ears and intrigue the mind. They breathe new spectral light into King Crimson's "Thela Hun Ginjeet" and Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" while striking such a heady funk groove in "Girls for Single Men" and "Riddles Are Abound Tonight," that you'd swear Bootsy Collins was on board. Just when you think you're beginning to understand where this eccentric outfit is headed, they switch gears and you find yourself on an island paradise swaying with the palm trees on the surf-o-delic "Hendershot." Live Frogs is jam rock of the first order. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Amazing live set from Primus frontman.......2006-10-04

Absorbing concert jam, far from comfortable due to acquired taste Claypool, but undeniably proficient in the art of the warped live jam. Playing a majority of original solo material, the decade old stuff has positively taken on a new shine. Claypool's unabashed enthusiasm for incorporating a broad range of musicians into his maniacally comical live sessions, including this time the heavy incorporation of surf sax, will have fans basking in the new interpretations. The two cover songs as well are handled with eccentric, talented care. With most things Claypool, the performances can get a little over-indulgent, loosing track of melodic structure in favor of pure unbridled rhythmic jam- despite there being an abundance of outstanding solos and synergies throughout the musical show off. Still, anyone interested in the art of the jam, granted one will accept the perverted spin Les puts on the genre through his nasal vocals and aggressive, quirky instrumentation, will be heavily rewarded with this great live experience.

this live set of les claypool's fearless flying frog brigade is extraordinary, an explosive first set right off the bat with Thela Hun Ginjeet and just doesnt quit the entire show, everyone playing at this show are in the peak of their playing, it just sounds amazing, not one single note is off, or wrongly played, absolutley one of my favorite cds i own, if i ever lost it, i would need a replacement, if youre a les claypool fan or just love straight up solid funky jams, get this cd, you wont be sorry

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best live album I have ever heard........2005-09-16

The title says it all folks. I will do a song by song review, and note: this album gets a five, but i am grading the songs based on the others in the album; they all get 5/5 otherwise, but in the context, some are better than others:

Thela Hun Ginjeet- A King Crimson tune, the frogs do a great job of interpreting it on the stage. However, even though this song would be the highpoint of any other record, here its just one of many greats. 4/5

Riddles Are Abound Tonight- This song kicks. It just does. Les plays bass like a madman on this, and just doesn't stop. Eenor and Todd Huth battle it out on guitar, while Jay Lane and Jeff Chimeti hold the groove, and Skerik busts out a fantastic sax solo. 5/5, and well deserved.

Hendershot- Surf's up! Hendershot gives Eenor and Skerik time to stretch out, with extended solos and nice groove development. A fun listen indeed. 5/5

Shattering Song- This song is very iffy with me, as at times I am bored by it, and at other times I am completely blown away. Today is this song's lucky day, as I can't help but love it. 5/5

Running The Gauntlet- The solos in this song save what is quite a simple-structured piece of music. Jeff, Eenor, Todd, Skerik, and finally Les get to stretch out some solos, and although amusing, this song is actually a lower point. Still a very strong piece though. 4/5

Girls For Single Men- The only song that outclasses the bass playing on Riddles is this ripping version of Girls. Les and Skerik own this show, each having a ball on their respective instruments and plain old rocking. Eenor and Todd provide great guitar lines, while Jeff and Jay and Les do what they do best- groove reinforcement. This song is a slap in the face, as good as it gets. 5/5, 10/5 if I could.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond- The Fancy Band pulls this one off excellently, but to find its origins in a Les cover band, this is the place to look. Les has always been a Floydian fan, and couldn't help himself with covering a few Floyd tunes (see Set Two). Shine On is a great example of this band's flexibility, and ends the show on a perfect note. 5/5

Buy this if you don't have it, play it constanly, never tire of it, and keep on rocking.

    5 out of 5 stars better live.......2005-05-15

There is an age-old saying that goes with music: "They're better live." And, for some bands, this is entirely true. Dave Matthews and the Grateful Dead both come to mind when I think of that age-old line, so why not Claypool? Most Primus fans will tell you that the energy from live Primus is simply overwhelming, and I will attest to that. Studio Claypool is amazing in itself, but hearing Claypool live brings forth-another dimension of sound that cannot transpire through the speakers of any home audio setup.

With those things said, I also need to point out that this is not Primus. This is Claypool's later project, The Frog Brigade, and they sound much more jammy then Primus. Encompassing a sexy saxophone, the Frog Brigade has a jazzier jam-vibe that layers nicely with the funk-vibe already established by Claypool's bass-work. It's difficult to describe this album, because this album is much more broad and expansive then the Frog Brigade's studio album, Purple Onion. Purple Onion is fine, but it isn't very jammy nor does it give much room for the songs to expand. Live Frogs, Set 1 is a tremendous jam album, giving equal amounts of time to every musician to screw around and just play whatever the hell they want for a few minutes.

The CD opens up with King Crimson's Thela Hun Ginjeet - the lyrics are removed, and the song is extended, giving plenty of time for Claypool to get into a nice bass groove while the band works around him. Riddles Are Abound Tonight has a fantastic Saxaphone solo, and the bass-work is incredible. It's not quite as intricate as some of the stuff that was outputted by Primus, but then this is a jam album and not a bass album. The drum work is also incredible on this song, and is actually fantastic throughout most of the CD, but it will probably go unnoticed by most listeners as the bass and sax steal the show. The live version of Hendershot is fantastic, and much more interesting then the studio version. There is a tight guitar solo in the song, and the keyboards also give the song a lot more personality. The Shattering Song is an amazing live jam, and the guitar - I'm not sure what you would call it, maybe "slide-middle-eastern-guitar" - is absolutely incredible. In front of the guitar is the bass, of course, and the keyboard, which sounds really damn good. The Shattering Song, one of the more lengthy songs has an amazing saxaphone solo, with a lot of little intricate guitar work going on in the background, all while Claypool is keeping the music flowing with the exuberant, flashy bass-line. Also, is an incredible little diddy, "The Jim Bush," which goes back to that "slide-middle-easter-guitar" thing. I guess you could call it sitar on guitar, and wow, does it sound fun to play: top notch. The live version for Running The Guantlet is also superior to the studio version (anyone seeing a trend here?), featuring a lot of cool soloing from everyone, and fantastic drum work which will probably go unnoticed by the majority. Girls For Single Men is kind of a heavy song, that would bring back Primus memories, except for the saxophone that dominates the introduction, and the fantastic underlying keyboard work. The live album closes with another cover: this time Pink Floyd's Shine On You Crazy Diamond. The cover is absolutely haunting, with just as much haunting synth-effect as on Wish You Were Here, giving more emphasis to the bass, and bringing everything out a bit. The live cover also foreshadows Live Frogs, Set 2, aka the cover of Animals (the album). All in all, this is probably one of the best live albums I have ever heard and easily would be on my top 5.

This is quite the live album to have, and is easily one of the best. The massive layering of instruments into an intricate, tight, unified whole is amazing. Everything fits together nicely, and everything jams. The production is TOP NOTCH. You can hear the crowd, but they don't overtake the music. The CD doesn't feel over-produced either, you get a sense that all the musicians on stage know what they are doing, because, guess what, THEY DO. The selection of musicians here is incredible - divine musicians. The Frog Brigade is SUPERIOR live, and has so much energy that you can't pass this one up. If you were let down by Purple Onion, pick this one up, and I guarantee you will get some closure. And, if given the opportunity, see these guys live.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing album by a collection of virtuosos.......2005-01-04

This frog brigade lve album breaks new ground in rythym and sound, and is a technical masterpiece.

Thela Hun Gingeet- An unusual song but extremely well done. Don't try to figure out the lyrics, but do figure out the amazing synthesizer solo and the sax solo (yes, that is a sax going through distortion) 5/5

Riddles are Abound Tonight- An awesome bass line, and a dark song with an amazing beat and sax solo. 5/5

Hendershot- A tropical song that by far exceeds the Holy Mackeral version. Weak lyrics but fantastic sax (again) and Eenor is the man. 4.5/5

Shattering Song- A great rythym but a bit too floaty and plodding, though Eenor's little Jim Bush piece is not to be missed. 4.75/5

Running the Gauntlet- Probably was a single on the Holy Mackeral album, sounds like you've heard it before, but the songs' derivative nature is outshined by the amazing introductions and then the solos that come after them. 5/5

Girls For Single Men- Les is ridiculous with this one, his playing is impeccable. The guitar part is hounting, and the use of ambience is awesome. Todd Huth kills in his short, but sweet solo. 5/5

Shine on You Crazy Diamond- Never heard Pink Floyd or Jack Irons version, but I'm sure this one is better. Impeccable. Amazing. Perfect conclusion (semi-, at least) 5/5

In conclusion, this is one of the best albums i've heard in years, and is actually longer than most 12-track studio albums. pick this one up if you like music.

    5 out of 5 stars Pure Aristophanes.......2006-09-13

    Folks,

There would be no Broadway musicals without Aristophanes. He was the granddaddy who gave birth to Gilbert and Sullivan who fostered all we know and love on the Great White Way. This imaginative reconstruction is brilliant, the greatest recreation of an Aristophanes original ever done. The production was brilliant but the critics had no idea who Aristophanes was or what he did; fortunately, Sondheim and Lane, true men of the theater, did, and they delivered the goods. 5 out of 5 stars Where are the Aristophanes fans?.......2006-09-08

I'm astounded to see most people's reactions to this curiosity, which I stumbled across entirely by accident and immediately fell in love with -- until, reading the other reviews, I realized that the other reviewers are all Sondheim fans. Well, I am, too, and I recognize that this a remarkably atypical piece for him -- *and that's not a bad thing*.

Most people's criticisms seem to revolve around the fact that this is a failure as a Broadway musical -- and they're right. It's not hard to see why it folded early: for the simple reason that this piece was being marketed to entirely the wrong audience. As a purely musical, Sondheim piece, it's mediocre.

As an adaptation of Aristophanes, it's *inspired*.

Yeah, it's preachy. Yeah, it's juvenile. You know what? So was Aristophanes. People complain that the final confrontation -- a verbose battle between two poets -- bogs the play down. Sure, if you're hoping for a laugh-a-minute slapstick farce in the spirit of "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." But Aristophanes isn't Plautus, and that more thoughtful, intellectual comic twist is exactly what he would have approved of -- this is the kind of comedy that you don't laugh at, but rather the kind of comedy that makes you step back and go "Wow. That's really *masterful*."

In other words, not the kind of comedy that's going to be a hit on Broadway. But also not something that deserves to dismissed.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this musical.......2005-09-25

I am a HUGE fan of musicals. I listen to all of them I can. This is, without a doubt, one of the worst musicals I've ever listened to. I had to force my way through the cd, hoping the songs would get better, and they just didn't. I was relieved when #19 finally came up.

The only decent song is track 2, "Instructions to the Audience." The rest were bland and forced. I had a difficult time following the story, and the songs didn't have much of a beat.

Save your money and skip this cd.

5 out of 5 stars preservation from stage to cd.......2005-07-30

I saw this show on broadway a year ago, and I found it amazing...except for the 2nd act. The 2nd act had a lot of problems, but the first act made up for it. The songs are beautiful, and are beautifully executed, especially Nathan Lane's songs including my favorite; "Ariadne".

If you are a Sondheim or Lane fan, this CD is definitely worth a listen.

2 out of 5 stars Just so everyone knows, there IS a better recording............2005-07-15

I happen to love stephen sondheim. that does not mean that every production of sondheim is going to be golden. to prove that, he gave us Bounce. but seriously. The Frogs has some really intelligent music, which is quite apparent. But when you buy this soundtrack that I am reviewing, you are buying the final stop in a devolution of a good piece. It was mentioned that The Frogs was first performed in a swimming pool at Yale, and now it became this Broadway spectacle but now you can buy that original version that starred not only Nathan Lane, but also Brian Stokes Mitchell and Davis Gaines, who, as many of you know, are phenomenal. This talented trio brings the show home, something that Lanes later on with a weaker cast and plodding additions can not do. By buying the earlier version (also sold on amazon), you will acquire a soundtrack that just sounds a whole lot better.

But wait. There's more. When they released the original Frogs, they slapped Evening Primrose on as well, another obscure Sondheim. Luckily for us, it is one of the better ones. Some of Neil Patrick Harris' songs are really incredible, and ones' only regret about Primrose is that it only lasts for four songs. Yet these four songs stand out so much, that they have established Primrose as one of the stronger Sondheim works.

Here is what it comes down to. When you buy this version of The Frogs, the 2004 recording, you get a show that closed early, its ticket sales were so poor, with additional mediocre music. BUT. If you purchase The Frogs/Evening Primrose, you get a better cast, better songs, and an additional amazing Sondheim.

4 out of 5 stars Don't read into it too much... just prepare to laugh.......2005-11-04

It's not anti-gay... it's not cleverly disguised subversive wit... it just is what it is - spontaneous acoustic made up on the spot tunes with extremely hilarious tongue-in-cheek improvised lyrics delivered first-take that loosely revolve around a homosexual theme. If that bothers you then don't listen. If you're looking for something deeply intellectual then look elsewhere. If you want to laugh yourself senseless then buy this album. It sags a bit in places, but tunes like "I've Got Drugs (Out of the Mist)", "Hot C@*ck Annie", "Queen Boys", and "Baby Greaser George" never lose their novelty.

    5 out of 5 stars review.......2005-10-16

i gave this album 5 stars because it fulfilled my every fantasy and filled every hole of my desire with creamy sound splurgement.

4 out of 5 stars Utterly Hilarious (for the most part).......2003-01-13

Let me put it this way: If you are at all amused by Wesley Willis, Ween, The Moldy Peaches, or any other disturbed "outsider" act, you'll love this album. It's about a half hour's worth of surprisingly catchy "anti-folk" with (apparently ad-libbed) lyrics about sodomy and child molestation that sounds like it was recorded on a boom box. What more could you ask for? Find it used if you can.

5 out of 5 stars Artful lo-fi style, grace and humor.......2002-01-10

Far from being "designed to instill homophobia" this is probably one of the most irreverently gay albums ever made, certainly the only specifically "gay" music I've ever been able to stomach listening to. (And that's because it's totally sarcastic and satirical. Personally, politics and music don't mix in my ears very well. For example: horrible bands like Kitchens of Distinction and the Murmurs.)
But that's all totally beside the point; the naughty Flemion boys are also musical geniuses. You might have the disposition and opinions of Ralph Reed and still find yourself tapping your foot and singing along to "Baby Greaser George"; the Frogs are that infectious. (Like a wonderful disease, and they mean to be.)
This isn't music for slow-witted listeners. They won't know what to make of it and will come away with odd conclusions like "designed to instill homophobia." Right, that's why the cover of the album features a picture of a little boy wearing a gay-pride pin!
Don't be dissuaded by the gay stuff (if you're the type who usually is,) this is an album for everyone and anyone who appreciates intelligent, fun, and challenging music. The gay angle (aside from being personally interesting to at least one of the brothers) is really just a ruse to create the funny, shocking humor that will make you laugh every time you find yourself humming one of their contageous melodies. And if it bothers you that much...buy one of their other albums.

1 out of 5 stars words too distracting.......2001-09-25

The music is somewhat clever, perhaps a little better than the average amateur rock band (they know more than 3 chords), but nothing like TMBG or the Beatles. There is some clever mixing and a few extra instruments brought in for effect on a few tracks. But what mostly makes this CD unique is the words, which seem designed to instill homophobia. Every track (except the first, which is about being stoned) is a song about "what that gay guy did to me on the beach" and "this is a faggy town we live in". This theme is overused and distracting.

    Amazon.com's Best of 2001

After unearthing Stephen Sondheim's youthful effort, Saturday Night, a couple of years ago, producers desperate to bank on the name of one of Broadway's last living titans continue chasing after obscure offerings. The Frogs was a 1974 adaptation of a play by Aristophanes and was staged by the Yale Repertory Theater for a week. This recording, the first complete one, boasts the presence of Nathan Lane, Davis Gaines, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. In Broadway star power, that's like having Jim Carrey, Brad Pitt, and Tom Cruise in the same movie. Evening Primrose was a 1966 ABC special, which spawned a couple of songs ("I Remember" and "Take Me to the World") that made it into the cabaret and solo recital repertories. Granted, these two pieces are for Sondheim completists, but they do provide an interesting glimpse into the mind of one of the musical theater's most brilliant auteurs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Primrose Shines, Frogs Leaps!.......2005-08-27

This recording is arguably one of Sondheims greatest! The Frogs, which appears here with a brilliant cast (Nathan Lane, Brian Stokes Mitchell among others) is one of Mr. Sondheims oddest pieces of theater. Although it was recently revived on Broadway with a new book by Mr. Lane and that recording is probably better, the entire first half of this recording (which is The Frogs) is brilliant for nostalgias sake and for the amazing expierence of the music itself. Mr. Sondheim has created such music for The Frogs! Very grandiose and stunning!

But it is really the final four tracks on the album (The Evening Primrose) that shines. The Evening Primrose is also an interesting Sondheim show but this one is quite possibly worth the price of the album itself. This recording (the only LEGAL one i know of) of the show is... well... perfect. The music is Sondheim at his best, the singers (Neil Patrick Harris plays the lead) are terrific and it just sounds glorious!

The Frogs might be an interesting and entertaining reason to purchase this album but it will The Evening Primrose that will make you scream with joy!

2 out of 5 stars Can I sell it On Ebay!!!!.......2005-06-01

Contrary to other reviwes posted I will tell you that the Evening Primrose on the Mandy Patinkin Cd "Dress Casual" IS the "Primrose" to own. This one was in my opinion under acted and undersung. While Mandy Patinkin is always over the tip, Ms Peters is one of the best Interpreters of Sondheim's works and the orchestration on this is much darker and deep, like the subject matter of the piece. I found this whole CD lacking, given that just like the "Dress Casual" I bought it only for the "Evening Primrose" selections. Thank the GODS for CD Burners so I can compile my own best of Sondheim CD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Evening Primrose.......2004-04-15

I find the Evening Primrose here much better than that on "Dress Casual." Firstly, because the two performers--Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy--are both amazing singers. Also, because both of these performers are younger and thus, their voices are more "youthful". For this musical, in particular, "youthfulness" is important; Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin are simply to mature to effectively do these parts. I find Neil Patrick Harris, in particular, absolutely superb, and his version of "Not While I'm Around" (on the NYP Sweeney Todd recording) is far and away the best I have ever heard (except for LuPone's dismal British accent). This Evening Primrose alone is worth the price of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing........2004-02-17

    >The Patinkin-Peters version of "Evening Primrose" is in Patinkin's "Dress Casual" CD, the studio recording that became the basis of his Broadway concert. I believe this was the first time all four songs were recorded.

Possibly, but on THIS disc we have the first time all four songs were recorded UNDER SONDHEIM'S SUPERVISION, and that makes all the difference in the world. Mandy Patimkin greatly distorts "If You Can Find Me"'s melody; Bernadette Peters's voice is under the accompaniment on "I Remember", and the arrangements on "Dress Casual" are over-elaborate, gooey, and unrestrained. Neither singer effectively plays his character. No, the "Evening Primrose" you want is right here.

    5 out of 5 stars Addendum.......2004-01-31

If you're looking for the Mandy Patinkin "Dress Casual" CD (as an alternative or supplemental "Evening Primrose" recording), note that Amazon has it listed, for some reason, under "classical music".

    4 out of 5 stars Typical excellence.......2006-03-22

If you are looking for a disc with first-rate interpretations of some of the standards in brass band literature, this recording (and its somewhat more refined Volume 1) begs your attention. All of the performances are extremely clean and precise, and the technical requirements of these works are often extensive. There are the moments of overly sentimental playing and wobbly vibrato that was so off-putting to Vaughan Williams in his Henry V, but nothing outside of the standard practice in most British Brass Bands.

5 out of 5 stars who are these guys??.......2000-09-05

Mining may be tough on the lungs, but it does wonders for the embouchure. Wonderful sound, musicianship and conducting. The only flaw, and it is present in their soundtrack recording of "Brassed Off" as well, is the engineer's stubborn refusal to crank up the volume on the gorgeous fleugel solos --when accompanied by the entire band, these lovely riffs (In "Brassed Off, "En Aranjuez Con Tu Amor" is a classic musical paradox-- at once stunning in both it's economy and lavishness) struggle to be heard and sound like they were phoned in from a pub across the street. Still, the band plays on, flawlessly.

There was a time, back in the era just before stereophonic records documenting the sounds of trains began to take control of our hi-fis, that Folkways Records was the king of the field recording. Its catalog boasted seminal recordings like Sounds of Insects, Sounds of the Annual International Sports Car Grand Prix of Watkins Glen, N.Y., and the essential Sounds of the Junk Yard. This classic reissue, originally recorded in 1958, is a prime example of just how offbeat Moses Asch's legendary imprint could get. Here we get the Sonoran desert toad doing his best in mid-warning croak to sound like a CB radio squelching, the childlike scream of the Southern leopard frog, or a full chorus of barking tree frogs. It's 92 tracks of frog sounds with narration by herpetologist Charles M. Bogert--nearly an hour long. Imagine the possibilities... --Jason Verlinde

      Album Description

The amphibian song revival begins here! This classic of both biological fieldwork and natural sound recordings, originally released by Folkways in 1958, presents 57 species of frogs and toads on 92 tracks, digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Compiled and narrated by renowned herpetologist Charles M. Bogert, these sounds were recorded in swamps, lakes, woods, creeks, and road-side ditches all over North America. Sit back and let the bewitching tones of the Pig Frog, Dwarf Mexican Treefrog, Little Green Toad, Southwestern Woodhouse's Toad, Great Basin Spadefoot, and other famed vocalists entrance and amaze you. In a time when frog and toad populations are in rapid decline, this recording reminds us of the remarkable diversity and beautiful music we are in danger of losing. Extensive notes with a new introduction by Richard G. Zweifel, bibliography, discography, and photographs are included. 92 tracks, 55 minutes. Reissue of Folkways 6166.

      5 out of 5 stars Frog Songs.......2007-06-12

If you are interested in the significance of frog songs or in identifying the songs of frogs and toads in North America, you will get your money's worth from this CD. If, however, you are looking for a peaceful surround-sound tape of frogs singing away the night, something, say, to aid a guided meditation, this is NOT the CD for you.

Though recorded more than 50 years ago (and thus providing an unintended historical reference point as well), the recordings are crystal clear, and Mr. Bogert (not Bogart) explains each of the 90-plus short cuts in great detail. The full title refers to the biological significance of voice in frogs--this is really a fairly rigorous, somewhat academic audio study of various calls of North American frogs.

The emphasis is on behavioral science as much as song, but some of the pond-side performances are outstanding in their own right.

      4 out of 5 stars Good work.......2007-05-15

This CD is well put together and fun to listen to. As a naturalist I apreciate the hard work which was put into this tape. I was hoping that this would have more western species. Overall, this is one of my favorite nature CDs.

5 out of 5 stars All the frogs that fit . . ........2007-01-10

I was so excited to get this I took it to work, but had to listen to the rest at home (twice already) to spare my coworker who was strangely unpiqued by the unfolding revelation of the amazing variety of species and calls of frogs. The narrator's voice fondly transported me back to my childhood with his Marlon Perkins-esque (Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom) intonations . . .It was great to recognize some calls that I heard all my life that I might've previously thought were crickets or birds . . . Not only are the frog calls aesthetically pleasing, the narration and booklet with current updates are very educational . . . it was amusing to learn that some male frogs have a special warning chirp used when another male has mistakenly mounted them instead of a female. . . like "uh, hey buddy, you got the wrong frog . . ."

      5 out of 5 stars Terrific--ribit!.......2004-11-28

Rare is the item of which one can say, it croaks, and mean: it's a vibrant living wonderful thing. That's this CD. Yes, the narrator is as wonderful as the frogs singing.

But for those who don't like narration, one can rip a new copy, sans human voices.

This CD is one of the best nature recordings ever made.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite cd's.......2003-10-01

I used to have this when it was an lp set. Oh how I loved it! And it's just as good on cd.

As for the complaint about the narrator mentioned by one fellow, no no no! The narrator is the best part, with his chirping enthusiasm for the different frog croaks.

Truly, this is one for the ages. Indispensible.
