The Producers was the vehicle that first proclaimed Mel Brooks's decidedly singular comic vision as a film director in 1968. At the time, the world may not have been entirely ready for the depth charges of hilarity he unleashed; but more than three decades later, it seemed almost foreordained that the film's retooling as a full-fledged musical--directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman--would become the smash hit of the 2000-2001 Broadway season (even before opening at the St. James Theatre in April). Brooks is, of course, no stranger to the Broadway musical genre or to songwriting, but skeptics might find themselves taken by surprise at just how outrageously well all the threads come together for the new show.

The film's absurd core vignette--the infamous "Springtime for Hitler"--if anything gains a few notches in hilarity when framed by a character-rich musical that comes off as both parody and valentine in its mimicry of Broadway's "golden age." Brooks (with the help of idiomatically expert arrangements by Glen Kelly) has cooked up a variety of numbers constituting a virtual primer of old-fashioned American musical comedy styles (there's even a toying with Cabaret-style decadence), but they're always coated with an extra layer of zaniness. In fact, the whole show becomes a Chinese box of parodies within parodies. But what really gets the whole mix working is a surefire cast headed by Nathan Lane playing Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick doing a delightfully nebbish turn with delusions of misplaced glory as his sidekick, Leo Bloom.

From his first big number (musically winking at Fiddler on the Roof), Lane hungrily lays claim to the role, undaunted by his formidable predecessor, Zero Mostel. Even on disc, you can visualize his over-the-top mugging as a dethroned "king of Broadway" who was "the first producer ever to do summer stock in the winter." Comedy, as they say, is all about timing, and that's exactly what Lane gets right. His interactions with Bloom, Franz Liebkind (Brad Oscar), and Roger de Bris (Gary Beach) are priceless, even when only in sound. As for the tunes, Brooks crafts a number of truly memorable ones--don't be surprised to find yourself horrified as you hum along with "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop" and, of course, "Springtime for Hitler." --Thomas May

As Mel Brooks's The Producers returns to the big screen where it began, this soundtrack completes a trilogy of sorts that also includes the original 1968 movie soundtrack and the 2001 original cast recording. Broadway director Susan Stroman is still at the helm, and budgets being larger in Hollywood than on the Great White Way, Douglas Besterman polishes his own orchestrations to a luscious sheen. The Broadway principals also make the trip, including leads Nathan Lane as Max Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom; both could probably play these parts in their sleep by now, but they still go at it with ferocious energy. Castwise, the two big changes are Uma Thurman as Swedish bombshell Ulla and Will Ferrell as Nazi writer Franz Liebkind. Thurman does well enough on "When You Got It, Flaunt It," but she flounders a bit on her contribution to "That Face," Brooks's excellent tribute to 1950s MGM musicals. Ferrell displays natural musical chops, as evidenced by his "Der Guten Tag Clog-Hop," which pops up again as the horrifyingly cheesy "The Hop-Clop Goes On." (All these years playing inept music teacher Marty Culp on Saturday Night Live must have helped.) Other changes from the show include the addition of a new song, "There's Nothing Like a Show on Broadway" (performed by Lane and Broderick); the Bialystock track "The King of Broadway," which appears at the very beginning of the show, was cut from the film but pops up as a bonus track. If you loved the movie version of the Producers, you will love the soundtrack. The music of Mel Brooks as sung by Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Will Ferrell, Uma Thurman is outstanding. This is a wonderful soundtrack, I can listen to it over and over again!

The Producers Movie Soundtrack.......2007-01-12

This was impossible to find the the UK (where I live) so I was delighted to find it at Amazon.com. It was a present for my teenage son. We had seen the movie and the theatre production in London and THOROUGHLY enjoyed it. It was the funniest show we have seen in years and I thought it would be great to have a permanent momento of our trip by buying the soundtrack.

It is hilarious, even if you haven't seen the movie or the musical BUY IT it is hilarious, non-stop comedy all the way through.

We give it 10/10. Enjoy

Okay, so I got The Producers on DVD for my birthday and I was like...amazed. Then, I went out and bought the soundtrack so that I could listen to "Haben Sei Gehurt Das Deutsche Band?" over and over again. This whole CD is fantastic. The lyrics are hilarious, and some of them are actually sincere, like "Til Him" and "That Face". Matthew Broderick's voice is as great as ever and Nathan Lane's energy emenates from this disc. Highlights for this CD are "We Can Do It", "Der Guten Tag Hop-Clop", "Keep it Gay", "Along Came Bialy", "That Face", "Haben Sei Gehurt Das Deutsche Band?", all the "Hitler" songs, and...well...all of them, really. Just...buy it and listen to it...and be happy. The end.

Funny Musical Soundtrack.......2006-03-11

If you thought movie musicals had died, you were probably mostly right. However, every once in a while someone tries another one. Some succeed, most fail. However, the quality of the music from these movies is often quite different from the movie itself. Such is the case with this soundtrack. Mel Brooks, the man who brought you the classics "Young Frankenstein," "Blazing Saddles," and "High Anxiety," gives us the music from the movie "The Producers."

The music is classic Hollywood, with a style that dates back to the 50s and 60s. I was also fascinated that Hollywood actors could pull off these songs with such class and style. There are a few hiccups along the way, such as Uma Thurman's weak vocals on "That Face," but so much of this music is original and fresh with its classic inspiration.

Many of the songs deliberately provoke smiles. "Haben Sie Gehort Das Deutsche Band?" sung by Will Ferrell makes you smile, though much of it is in German. Ignore other comments about "Springtime for Hitler." The song is funny and John Barrowman, Uma Thurman and the ensemble pull off a song that owes much inspiration to movie musicals of the 30s. Yes, the war has been over for more than half a century, but if we can still poke fun at Custer, the Pilgrims and the Inquisition, why not poke more fun at Hitler? Admittedly, he is an easy target, but so was Custer. How about "Heil Myself," with the line "...there is no greater dictator in the land..."? This stuff is a riot. Note for Naziphobes: This music pokes fun at Nazis rather than elevating them, so watch this movie with tongue-in-cheek.

Musically there are some awesome moments. "You'll Find Your Happiness in Rio" is musically inspired, even if the lyrics are cheesy.

There are a few moments where Nathan Lane pulls off a song that should have been impossible. "Betrayed" is a riot, and yet Lane manages to sing so dramatically that you believe that he is actually hurt, until he sings lyrics that make you crack up.

Perhaps the best thing about this album is its bombast. The production is explosive and hyper-dramatic, with sound alternately quiet and blasting, the instruments jumping into your face. I am always enthused about a producer who likes to make you jump into the music, particularly if the music is worth jumping into.

I rarely purchase or listen to soundtracks because they are too filled the kind of music that is interesting if you have had three or four drinks, but otherwise it is barely elevator music. This CD has music that may be short of great, but it is enjoyable and frequently funny. If you liked the movie, I suspect you'll love the CD. If you like musicals, most especially funny musicals, then I suspect you will love this CD. Good luck!

I saw the making of the CD on TV. The cast does a great job. I have the CD in my car stereo and listen to it often.

This recording is great! I saw the play in november and loved the music. I bought the CD a little later and i am still listing to it. The cast are all great singers and did a great job. The songs are witty and catchy and never get old. You should listin to this.(Warning:See the movie or the play before you listin to this, you might hate it if you've have not.)

Spring Time for "The Producers".......2005-12-13

While I'll abmit that Nazi regemes and Hitler are probably some of the least funny thing in the world...i have to admit that the words to Springtime for Hitler are hilarious, just like the rest of the songs on this cast recording.

While "The Producers" Is not as musically complex or mature as other "Best Musical" scores of recent years (Spamalot, Avenue Q, Hairspray,) It is funnier than all of those put together. Nathan lane And Matthew Broderick Are perfectly cast in their roles and Caddy Hoffman is great, and when Ulla belt, she Belts!
the rest of the cast is amazing.

As for the song I can't think of one that I don't like, They are all great!

I would hope that the fact that the show makes light of Hitler doesn't turn you off, because you would be missing somthing great.

Mel Brooks = Brilliant.......2005-12-12

My theatre group went to New York two years ago, adn we did a marathon 4 shows in 3 days. Each show got progressively better, finally culminating in seeing Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick's final performance of "The Producers." I have been a fan of Brooks' since I saw "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" 5 years ago. Naturally, I was beyond excited to see the show he made of his most brilliant film.

I was not disappointed. It was funny, racy, and downright fabulous. I bought the soundtrack at intermission and have been listening to it ever since. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves musicals. Lane and Broderick play off each other perfectly, Cady Huffman has one of the best belting voices I've heard in ages, and the songs are actually FUNNY.

Aside from raving about one of my favorite shows, I would like to address the comments made about the show downplaying Hitler and being racist towards Germans. In no way does this show downplay Hitler's terrible deeds. Bialystock and Bloom make several comments about how disgusted they are about the play- the fact that it is so insulting to our sensibilities is the reason why it was chosen in the first place. I am Jewish and have studied the Holocaust and WWII for years. I was not offended in the least, nor did I feel the Brooks was promoting or trivializing Hitler's war crimes. Brooks himself is Jewish for god's sake.

Second, I see nothing in the show that is racist towards Germans. Yes there is a Nazi in it who is German. How is that racist? The Nazis went all over the world after WWII- it is possible that several ended up in New York City. And no one will argue that some Nazi's were German. You might as well say that the show is discriminatory towards Swedes, or gay directors, or producers, or the countless number of things made fun of in the show.

This is by far the funniest thing I have ever seen. I got the chance to see it on broadway with Lane (unfortunatly not Broderick) and most of the original cast. For some reason, certain people seem to think this play is racist. First off, the whole thing is pure 100% SATIRE. I'm 15 and I can realize that. Also, are you aware that Mel Brooks is jewish? Yeah, so lighten up. I realize what Hitler did, and it will never be forgotten. But my God, get a sense of humor. In case you never saw the play, the Bavarian guy breaks his leg (making "It's bad luck to say good luck on opening night funny) and is replaced by the gay director for the song "Springtime for Hitler". ITS HILARIOUS! BROOKS MADE HITLER A GAY GUY! And why do you think he did that? Geeze... just lighten up!

So about the CD...awesome. I love these songs, and I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie version of the musical coming out in late December! GO SEE IT!

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

Moderate Quality.......2003-06-20

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra
McDonald, Bebe Neuwirth, Jerry Orbach and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Including a live recording of Barbara Cook warbling "Losing My Mind" from her "Mostly Sondheim" CD isn't exactly kosher. But then again, neither is this gimmick-riddled release. Curtain up?
Half-way, maybe. Light the lights? Dim them, please.

Coelecanth.......2005-07-08

For Producers fans, Coelacanth was one of those mysterious albums. We all heard the tunes. Just no album. There is a lot of controversy where Coelecanth is concerned. However, for most Producers fans, The Producers just wasn't the same after the departure of Kyle Henderson. Tim Smith is credited with giving the group another direction. This certainly changed the formula that made the Producers such a awesome group. The new direction changed the sound of the group. Coelacanth is frustrating to listen to. You hear the familiar hooks, but then it goes into completely somewhere else. The album is not good nor bad, but at least interesting. Wayne Famous's various keyboard styles are extensive, maybe overly done to cover very weak musical material. Let us be glad the album was not released in 1987. Certainly, it would be disappointing to say the least. Thankfully, the original group got back together, maybe a little too late to save.

It Only Took 12 Years..........2005-05-24

... but The Producers' great "lost" album, "Coelacanth", has finally been released, & on CD, no less!!

For those of you who aren't familiar with this Atlanta-based quartet, The Producers were early-MTV era darlings until they had a falling out with a viciously petty A&R rep at Portrait Records, who basically tore up their contract & effectively blackballed them from getting a deal with any other label(s). Dauntless, The Producers (minus original bassist / vocalist Kyle Henderson) recorded their indie release, "Run For Your Life" (which, unfortunately, has yet to see an official CD pressing -- one can always hope!) with a new bassist, Tim Smith, later to play with Jellyfish & Uma Jets.

Having no big label release -- & subsequently no big budget for touring -- didn't deter them from playing out as much as possible, & this had the fortunate effect of sparking interest at MCA records, the label that was supposed to release "Coelacanth" (more about this name later).

Unfortunately, the A&R rep who fired them from Portrait took control of MCA Records & promptly fired them again, effectively ending their "professional" career as a band. "Coelacanth" languished in the MCA vaults for over a decade, never to be heard outside a few "hot" (read: "distorted") bootlegs.

12 years later, the "fish" everyone thought extinct (yes, the "coelacanth") finally re-emerge to have their day, to an extent.

Remixed, remastered, reorganised, & a joy for the ears, "Coelacanth", The Producers' great "lost" album, has finally been officially released & I couldn't be happier about it (well... there are a few things I could be happier about, such as their being signed again to a major label & getting their dues, as well as revenge on Al Teller, but I digress). The songs are crisper, punchier, & just as good as -- if not better than -- all their previous releases.

Lead singer / guitarist Van Temple's voice is in ultra-fine shape, having undergone surgery to remove polyps from his vocal cords in early 1987. Drummer Bryan Holmes' signature beats are bombastic, ever-present & tight as ever, keyboardist Wayne Famous is as frenetic & tasteful as always, & then-bassist Tim Smith plays soldily in the pocket (no mean feat when playing alongside Holmes), & he especially shines on the fretless basslines of "Right Man for the Job" & "Who's Crying Now?".

While The Producers don't have a recording contract, they are still together & touring, albeit mostly just regionally around the Georgia area. Bassist Kyle Henderson has returned to the fold, & while Tim Smith did a wonderful job during his tenure, nothing & no one can touch the original line-up.

In this age of internet-based record companies, there's hope that The Producers will one day release another album of new material (the liner notes of "Coelacanth" allude to this very possibility), but for now, just knowing that (most of) their previously recorded material is finally available on CD is enough.

For now.

Just OK- Not as good as the first three albums........2004-12-11

I am a musician and long-time Producers fan. The Producers are one of the most underated and unoticed pop bands of the eighties. The first record is as perfect as it gets. I also enjoyed the follow-ups "You Make the Heat" and "Run For Your Life". I was excited to find out that this unreleased album was now available. I gave this CD many spins. If you are big Producers fan, this is worth it just to wet your appetite for new material. But in my opinion, there are only three strong tunes on this CD, they are Primitive Man, One Good Reason, and Slow Dancing (which is a re-recorded song from the "Run For Your Life" LP). All the other songs are average, because they just do not have the strong hooks that are typical of a Producers song. For newcomers, get the dual album cd Producers/ You Make The Heat, if you can find it. A true gem. I was suprised how well others have rated this CD. It does not stand up to the first three records. Call me the black sheep, but this one is for fans only (that includes me).

another gem by The Producers!.......2004-02-08

why this album was never released in 1988 is a mystery to me! this group is one of the best bands to come out of the early 1980's - hands down! I always dubbed them as "The greatest pop band that never was!" this album is another fine piece of work! the first 4 songs could have been hits! I was a musician for years & I know a great band when I hear one! these guys should have had a few top 10 records. "What's he Got?", "Certain Kinda Girl", "She Sheila", "What She does to Me" are bonafide top 10 hits! why they weren't, I'll never understand! these guys were robbed of deserved stardom by a poor management team & Portrait records!

Another Great CD From The Producers.......2003-04-12

Why this CD sat on the shelf for years at the band's former label is a mystery. There were definitely surefire hits on the album ("Renaissance" and "Out of My Head") that had potential. Too bad. But here it is -- Coelacanth -- for your listening pleasure many years after the fact.

I guess the only downside to the album is the dull brown cover art. Not bad, but not all that attractive. That's kind of petty considering the good music contained within (don't judge a book by its cover!), but I like cover art.

If you're a fan of the band's previous albums, get this album while you can before it goes out of print and becomes impossible to find.
